Shea No More

Pity the team that so brazenly provokes the ghost of Robert Moses. (But shooting in B/W was a nice touch.) Yeah, Shea was a dump. But still. We did spend a few happy hours there. Que sera sera.

  • The more I look at the inside of the new stadium (in photos so far, of course) the more I start thinking that I am going to miss Shea. I haven’t been here that long, but I managed to go to almost 3 dozen games there in 4 years. But this isn’t hitting me as hard as some native New Yorkers I know. Shea wasn’t pretty, I readily volunteer. But it was dumpy like someone’s first car or apartment was dumpy, so it was easy for nostalgia to stick to it.

  • That’s not black and white, actually. Shea just makes everything seem colorless. Good riddance, it was an awful ballpark.

  • Except for the entire damn thing once being covered with vivid New York blue. I think it was just the light of the day doing that. Or the surrounding “neighborhood.”

  • If they could have dropped that fragment directly on a statue of Robert Moses (or, to truly bring his spirit back, his beloved Unisphere), all the better. Bill Shea did some good stuff in bringing National League baseball New York, but he did it largely by being Moses’ crony, so I have no problem with his name vanishing from stadium sight too.
I saw my first major league game at Shea and have a ton of fond memories, like the time I ducked a water bottle full of piss someone was trying to throw at a guy in a Phillies jersey with typically drunken aim.
The Ebbetts Field-esque rotunda, named after Jackie Robinson, is a nice feature in Taxpayer Field, and it looks like a pitchers’ park too. And they’ve brought the ugly homerun Apple over, too. What’s to miss?

  • Is anyone else listening to Mike Francessa (sp) today? What a horrible story!
