Sheff Goes Down: Melky Comes Up

Just in time for the big series tonight, the Yanks have placed Gary Sheffield on the 15-day DL retroactive to Saturday, and have called up Melky Cabrera from Columbus to take his roster spot. Expect Cabrera to ride the pine, with Bernie remaining in Sheff’s righfield slot. Melky’s been raking down in AAA, but Yankee fans are sure to remember the fiasco that was his brief stint in center last year, when he was called up from AA and seemed overwhelmed. As Cliff Corcoran notes on Bronx Banter, the Yanks might have been better served by bringing up the more mature (or at least older) Kevin Thompson, while leaving Melky down on the farm for a little more development. Anyway, he goes right into the fire this week, assuming he gets any time at all.

  • Good. That means his reaction time will be down. Keep your head up, David – I can throw hard.
