Defeat from the Jaws of Victory, twice. Hughes is scratched as the Yankees must think they are getting a bigger boat with David Huff, bailing Hughes out of his start. But is it the Yankee starters that are the worry? Pettitte left the game with Bombers up 8-3 heading into the last three innings, but that wasn’t enough, was it? Nope. And let’s not even bring up Thursday. John Lackey merely needs to keep the Sox within, oh seven runs or so, until the Yankees unleash their fully depleted bullpen. Comment away.

I guess this means Hughes is theoretically available as a reliever. Yay. A jack-o-lantern left on the porch until Thanksgiving has more teeth than the Yankees pitching staff right now.
Lackey through the 1st on 8 pitches, slightly beating Huff’s 12.
Oh, Huff’s a lefty? Low-scoring affair probable.
Napoli gives the Sox a 2-0 lead. I guess that about averages Lackey’s usual run support.
With Napoli we’re really missing the big picture by concentrating on his K’s. After last night’s game his OBP was practically identical to Victorino’s.
Gomes three-run jack. That gives Lackey something to work with.
Gameday tells me Huff’s effectiveness may be slipping since he’s passed the 45-pitch mark. So five runs in 2 2/3 innings these days counts as effective?
8-2 Sox now. Be kinda nice to give Koji a day off today.
Never mind that low-scoring prediction…gotta be surreal for Lackey.
Pedey double. Now everybody has a hit.
Nunez double. Lackey has allowed quite a few guys to reach today on an 0-2 count.
Another double. Not quite the Lackey we’re used to this season.
Make of it what you want, Yankee fans, but the White Sox have taken the lead against the Orioles.
Xander’s first major league home! Makes it 12-3.
uncle. can we just skip to next year right now?
I’ll give odds that the Yankees will send a position player, probably someone like Mark Reynolds, to the mound in eighth and/or ninth.
> Make of it what you want, Yankee fans, but the White Sox have taken the lead against the Orioles.
I can make a hat, or a brooch..
Damn it, baseball has me pissed off.
A nine-run lead and Lackey has trouble throwing strikes?
12-5. Now officially not a quality start for Lackey. But he picked a good day for his not so good day.
12-6. So Lackey does not make even make it out of the 6th. I just called it a not so good day. Now I’d say he sucked.
I remember Thornton having a good inning recently, but mostly he has not been very good. So there …
And of course he immediately gives up a single to Cano.
And now a another base hit. 12-7. So Thornton sucks big time.
Inning over. Mercy.
Wow, Johnny. That was elegant.
8-pitch 1-2-3 inning from Drake Britton. Attaboy.
And now Britton loses it. Base hit, walk … They should be cruising through the final innings and instead we get this.
Tazawa coming in with a runner on base. That usually does not work too well.
Never easy.
Thornton has no place on a theoretical postseason roster.
Tazawa gets the two outs. Who’s to close? Breslow? A bit of insurance would be highly welcome.
Tazawa preserve us (and the lead)…wonder if Koji works again today. He’s been ridden awful hard.
Or Koji, of course. But I’m assuming he’s not available today.
Brett Marshall might be today’s best pitcher. And as I type, Napoli hits another home run to make it 13-9.
Napoli going off like a bomb in this series. Like the ones he’s hitting.
Tazawa stays in the game.
One away.
2 more outs would officially eliminate the BJs from the division.
Four-pitch walk to Overbay. Tazawa out, Breslow in, Ichiro up.
Farrell not fucking around, grabs Breslow for Suzuki after 4-pitch BB to Overbay.
Two gone.
Vernon Wells to pinch hit.
Uno…mas…
Splitting would have been okay…winning is better. Yanks have scored 8, 8, 9 and lost every game, ouch.
One pitch, game over. That was much closer in the end than it needed to be.
Not sure I’m ready to celebrate Blue Jays elimination day … let’s hope Ellsbury’s injury is not to serious, but I fear he might be out for the season.
Gah.
No mas, por favor.
I get to call sooth, in as much as a cock picks a sunrise at 15 minutes to daybreak. Fuck. Fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck. What is next?
At least we aren’t getting swept by the Mariners. It seems impossible at this point but the Yankees are still very much in the playoff hunt. It seems cruel and unusual to wish this aging band of brothers into October, where there all but certain to be slaughtered, but I can’t help myself. Go Yanks.
