So Close You Can Taste It

Terry Francona met the press today, making spring feel that much nearer. Highlights:

  • My dark horse candidate, Julian Tavarez, remains in contention for the closer role. Francona also said Tavarez is "fine."
  • Craig Hansen appears to be bound for the minor leagues (rightfully so).
  • Francona "think(s)" Manny’s "OK," based on discussions with the clubhouse attendants. We’ll take what we can get, I guess.
  • "[B]aseball players aren’t the best self-evaluators." Really? Even when they tell you they can go out there at 115 pitches and counting? *cough*curtschilling*cough*
  • "At some point you have to play your young players. I have no problem with that." Coulda fooled us.

All the kvetching aside — and it’s all in good fun right now anyway — we like Terry. He seems like a fun guy. He helped bring us a World Series win. It’s cool to hear him talk about baseball again after months of silence. We even miss seeing him rock back and forth while Rudy Seanez discovers that the strike zone is actually somewhere above the knees. We don’t know why we’re speaking in plural.

This in no way disqualifies us from posting 2,000 words ranting about his lineup choices come Week 2 of the season, however.

  • I like this one:
On placing a call to Mike Lowell amid rumors he was part of a potential trade to the Rockies: “He understands the nature of the business. He answered the phone with ‘Now hitting sixth for the Rockies….'”
I’m with you Paul on pitchers and catchers being a meaningless thing (for me/possibly the fans in general). Just another way to mark time.
(Kinda the way baseball may end up marking time in July for me on the way to the 7th Harry Potter book–all right, that’s completely unrelated to anything, but I wanted to squeeze in a “Final Harry Potter coming out this summer!” somewhere as I’ve been just about singing about it in real life the past week.)
At least with spring training games, I can pay MLB to watch them on my computer.
Oh man, this is getting me thinking about how nervous I was before the first game of the regular season last year. It’s gonna be so awesome come April when I’m watching live baseball that counts again.

  • Always good to hear from Tito. I can’t help but like the guy, even when some of his managerial decisions appear, um…not so good. At least he almost always backs up questionable moves with logical explanations or statistics, rather than “gut feelings.” Ugh.
I totally cannot wait for Spring Training. It isn’t like Opening Day, but ST is better than this baseball purgatory we’re currently stuck in. I’m like a thirsty man crawling in the desert right now.
