The Baltimore Orioles
may have posted the top bid for the right to pick-up American
right-hander Jaret Wright, according to Major League Baseball

This would end a two-week long battle between several ironists.

  • I find this kind of perplexing. The O’s minor league system is pretty much barren; i dont think there are too many (or any) advanced pitching prospects who projet to be more than a 4th or 5th starter, which is basically what Wright is now. So why trade that known commodity for something that’s not likely to be of much use in the near future, and then not particularly useful down the road. Cost is the only factor, but for $3 million Wright’s really not that expensive an insurance policy to have around. If the Yanks are looking at position prospects, especially at first base….I don’t know that the O’s have anything of serious value there either, at least anything that they’d give up for Jaret Wright.
We sure won’t be sorry to see Jaret in the rearview, but you gotta wonder about the return. Of course, at this point, all is speculation. So this gets a big “we’ll see….”
    WE’LL SEE….

  • My guess is that Cashman thinks Wright is a worthless insurance policy. In 2006, yes, he was useful. But he was doing a lot of things that would have been hard to repeat in 2007 (think Chacon from 2005 to 2006). He was allowing tons of baserunners and getting out of a lot of jams. His HR rate seemed anomolous too. I say he was/is a waste of a roster spot, and money saved on him is fine. Meanwhile Britton is typical of the pitchers the Yanks seem to like. Mainly, he’s overweight, has a live arm. Perhaps, their scouts see a bit of Bruney in him.
In terms of the free agent market for starters, I think the Yanks will obviously be aggressive, but I think they’re going to aim for mid-level talent that is more affordable. I believe we’ll be seeing Gil “ga” Meche in pinstripes next year.

  • Something else to think about in this. Wright is reunited with his old Leo the pitching guru who helped him get back on his feet in Atlanta.

  • So the O’s have the resources to go after someone like… say… Daisuke Matsuzaka. Instead, they get Jaret Wright.
All you need to know about why an Angelos-run team will remain near the basement in 2007 and beyond.
