Sox Gamer, Choose Your Own Adventure Edition: Sox-O’s X

[Ed. Note: Because we’re all out of town this weekend, the SFs offer you this series of gamers.]

Well, that was ___________ (electifying, disappointing, devastating). Despite _____________ (a great game from Daisuke, a great game from Bedard, the evaporation of what could have been a pitchers’ duel), the Red Sox managed to _____________ (blow it yet again, rally and win in thrilling fashion, win the resulting slugfest, lose the resulting slugfest).

This afternoon, Josh Beckett looks to break from the pack and be the first pitcher in baseball to win 15 games. He faces Brian Burres. who managed to win the last time he faced the Sox despite giving up 12 baserunners in five innings (just two runs). Maybe the Sox can put those baserunners to use — ____________ (unlike last night, just like last night).

  • I can’t stop laughing. All I can think of is Mad Libs!!! Great post Paul!

    Triskaidekaphobia August 11, 2007, 3:32 pm
  • Sigh, on Fox Kevin Kennedy is talking about how the Blue Jays were assholes to throw at ARod, but he says Clemens was a good teammate by retaliating. Why does EVERYONE on Fox suck up to the Yankees?
Garrett Olson has pitched two games so far, both against the White Sox and he lasted 4.1 and 5.0 innings. You know what this means? At least 4 innings of the Oriole bullpen!
We had better take advantage of this.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 3:40 pm
  • Oh, and his walk/strikeout ratio is 8/8.
But who knows, the Sox have struggled against LHP’s that suck.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 3:41 pm
  • Let’s go Red Sox!
    *clap, clap, clap clap clap*
    Let’s go Red Sox!
    *clap, clap, clap clap clap*

    Devine August 11, 2007, 3:50 pm
  • Not to mention pitchers they suck against pitchers they’ve never faced, Atheose…

    Devine August 11, 2007, 3:52 pm
  • Remove the first “pitchers”. Ugh, I’m still punch-drunk from last night.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 3:52 pm
  • Whew, Pedroia walks on a close ball 4. Coulda gone either way.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:00 pm
  • I am at work, so unfortunately I can’t see anything but Gameday, but I am liking this dude’s balls to strikes ratio so far…

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:02 pm
  • Two on, none out. Opportunity, for f***’s sake, is knocking!

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:02 pm
  • Hahahaha it’s okay Devine. Last night was wierd for me too: at first I was drinking because the Sox weren’t giving Daisuke any run support, then I was drinking to celebrate the 8th-inning rally, then I was drinking to drown my Gagne-pitching-batting-practice misery, and then drinking to make myself fall asleep as soon as possible so I could forget the horrible, horrible comeback.
Youk walk on 4 pitches, Ortiz up. Let’s hope this Rookie falls apart early.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:02 pm
  • Ortiz what he does best: striking out on a breaking ball by a lefty. If Manny GIDP I’m gunna throw something.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:04 pm
  • D’oh. Tizzle Kizzles.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:04 pm
  • Manny strikes out on the same pitch Ortiz did. Come on Lowell, please help us out.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:07 pm
  • God, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • After last night’s roller coaster, I’m having a hard time getting revved up for this one… Especially when an inning that starts with two baserunners ends with no runs scored.

    Hudson August 11, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • “D’oh. Tizzle Kizzles.”
I don’t know why but this made me laugh really hard.
Sigh, Lowell pops out to the center fielder. Beckett you had better be perfect. Looks like it’ll be one of those days for the offense.
Silver lining: Olsen up to 24 pitches so far. On track for 4IP.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • I hate us, we suck, we stink, we can’t get a clutch hit to save our lives. I’m dying, the world is ending, blah blah blah.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • Glad you liked it, Atheose. At least some good came of that inning…

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:10 pm
  • Beckett blows two by Roberts, K’s him up.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:13 pm
  • I love the sentence “Brian Roberts strikes out swinging.”

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:13 pm
  • Goddamnit, Patterson gets a lucky hit off the end of the bat that Beckett can’t grab quick enough. Such bullshit.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:14 pm
  • Apparently Beckett gives up a hit to Markakis. Beckett needs to focus on executing his pitches, and not on picking people off.
I say we start beaning Markakis.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:17 pm
  • Oops, I meant to say “Apparently Beckett wants to pick Markakis off”

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:18 pm
  • Miggy GIDP. Glad we’re not the only ones with men LOB.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:19 pm
  • Tejada, you are golden. I was just waiting for “In play, run(s)” but a DP works for me!

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:19 pm
  • The announcer just said “Manny Ramirez told me yesterday that homeruns don’t matter, and that this team can be like the 1998 Yankees, who won 125 games (including Post-season) and did not have a 30-homer guy”
Wow, Manny is saying positive things to the media?

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:23 pm
  • Look! Two baserunners to start an inning!
It can only end in heartbreak.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:24 pm
  • Devine, the game isn’t on Fox for you?
‘Tek gets a lead-off single, right after the announcers said he was slumping.
SWEET, JD Drew just hit a strange double that bounced right over the 1st-baseman’s head. ‘Tek to 3rd.
A triple here by Coco and then a homer by Lugo would give us a Natural Cycle.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:24 pm
  • At work, unfortunately…
    Damn you, Coco.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:26 pm
  • I don’t want you to walk, Lugo. Put the damn ball in play…preferably to the right side.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:26 pm
  • Lugo hits a drive to left field! Two runs score!
I LOVE the new Lugo–the one batting .400 since the all-star break, the one batting .343 in August. I think we can officially say that Theo did not make a mistake with this guy.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • YES! Someone actually got a (extra-base!) hit with RISP!

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • If New Lugo is the ALl Of 08 Lugo.. I will be very very happy.

    Anonymous August 11, 2007, 4:27 pm
  • Lugo has one more double than Drew on the year…
I really hope Drew improves this year/really shows up next year.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:29 pm
  • The game is not on FOX for me. I live in a national league town, so I get to see the cardinals play yet again. Uggghhh.
It could be worse though. Last time Yanks and Sox played each other on FOX they showed me a Pirates game instead.

    CincySF August 11, 2007, 4:29 pm
  • Drew is batting .381 in August, and over .300 since the all-star break.
Youk strikes out, but the Red Sox score 2. On one hit Olson’s ERA went from 2.90 to 5.14.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:30 pm
  • Pirates? You poor bastard

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:31 pm
  • Hee hee! That’s awesome, Atheose (the ERA jump).
Yeah, I do realize Drew has been much better (as has Lugo). I just would like to see more power from him, specifically…

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:32 pm
  • The Pirates? That’s like torture. Someone needs to get mlb.tv ;-)
Personally I can’t live without mlb.tv. I live in VA so I don’t get NESN, and watching the Sox play every night is one of the few things I look forward to.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:32 pm
  • Yeah Devine, you’re absolutely right about his power. We got him to hit homers behind Manny, not to hit for average. He only has 6 HR and 42 RBI’s. By comparison, Lugo has 6 HR and 53 RBI’s. Coco has 5 HR and 43 RBI’s.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:34 pm
  • Beckett gets his 3rd K. 1-2-3!

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:37 pm
  • Beckett K’s Huff on a sick curve, and then the same to Mora. He’s looking good today–21 pitches over 2 innings.
I really like this lineup. With Crisp and Lugo batting 8-9, and Pedroia and Youk batting 1-2, we have the potential for a LOT of good, fast baserunners for Papi and Manny.
Also, I love the move of Lowell to 5th in the batting order. Considering his numbers all season it just makes sense, as long as he doesn’t have a 2nd-half slump like last year.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:37 pm
  • I had mlb.tv, but the big draw for me was to be able to watch it at work. They blocked mlb at work so I listen to XM instead now. The only day this is a problem is Saturdays as I get to see the rest of the games on either extra innings or espn.

    CincySF August 11, 2007, 4:40 pm
  • Manny on by way of the BB with one out.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:41 pm
  • Speaking of Lowell, he just crushed a ball but was about 10 feet foul. Oh, and Manny drew a 4-pitch walk.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:42 pm
  • Hmmm, they managed it last inning. 2nd and 3rd after Lowell’s GRD. Anyone for the clutch single? Tek? Drew?

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:44 pm
  • Lowell drives the ball down the 3rd-base line for a double, Manny to 3rd. Great 2-strike hitting.
IBB to Varitek, looks like they wanna pitch to Drew.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:45 pm
  • Wow…they’re walking Varitek (to set up the DP?) to get to Drew.
How ’bout some of that pop I requested, David Jonathan?

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:45 pm
  • Wooooooo!

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:46 pm
  • Yay hittign with Risp!

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:47 pm
  • DREW SLAPS ONE INTO LEFT FIELD! Manny and Lowell score.
For those of you who aren’t watching the game, Lowell almost passed Manny. Manny waited at 3rd to tag-up, whereas Lowell could tell it was gunna drop from his angle. Funny stuff.
Crisp GIDP, but thankfully it’s not a big deal. We’re getting clutch hits today. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than Beckett getting the run support he deserves.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:47 pm
  • 2-RBI Drew single followed by Coco GIDP. After two and a half, 4-0 Sox. Olson at 62 pitches.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:47 pm
  • 4-0 Sox now. But I’m not celebrating (yet), still sulking from yesterday. Maybe if there’s and 8-run lead…

    Hudson August 11, 2007, 4:48 pm
  • Oh, correction, I said GRD for Lowell earlier. Not a ground-rule double, just your average double.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:49 pm
  • K the Fourth for Josh

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:50 pm
  • Hernandez…PWNED. Three straight called strikes.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:50 pm
  • Beckett K’s his 3rd batter in a row. 3 pitches, three strikes.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:50 pm
  • Pedroia makes a great running and half-diving catch to make an out.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:51 pm
  • Nice play for Dustin

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:51 pm
  • So I heard Youkilis has the new record for Red Sox 1st basemen on chances in a row without an error…I hope I didn’t jinx him just then.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:51 pm
  • FIFTH K!

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:53 pm
  • SIT DOWN, ROBERTS!

    Devine August 11, 2007, 4:53 pm
  • Too bad Youk wont get a Gold Glove though he deserves it.
    So does Coco.
If neither of them get it… there will be WRATH

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:53 pm
  • Beckett blows a 96mph fastball past Roberts again. Like Devine said earlier, everyone likes to see the sentence “Brian Roberts strikes out swinging”
5 strikeouts after 3, only 32 pitches over 3 innings.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:54 pm
  • Back to back singles by Lugo and Pedroia

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 4:57 pm
  • Lugo gets yet ANOTHER base hit. In Theo we trust.
Coco DEFINITELY deserves the gold glove. I hope they don’t just give it to Torii Hunter like they do every year. The good news: they give 3 gold gloves out for outfielders in general, not 1 per outfield position. So in other words, both Torii AND Coco can get one.
Pedroia keeps it going with a single past Tejada. I love our 8-9-1-2 batters/

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 4:57 pm
  • Sigh, the announcers are sucking up to the Yankees right now. I was hoping we could go an entire 9 innings without them being mentioned.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:00 pm
  • Whew.. thnak GOD that was foul.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:00 pm
  • God..THE YANKESS ARE NOT PLAYING. TALK ABOUT THE TEAMS THAT ARE PLAYING
    I ****hate**** FOX

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:02 pm
  • Yeah, that was an EASY double play if it was fair. Step on 3rd, throw to first.
Goddamnit, after fouling off 5 pitches he does exactly that, grounds out to 3rd baseman.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:03 pm
  • Loooong AB by Youk ends in a….
Double play. 3rd and first. This time the bal didnt go foul.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:03 pm
  • “The Orioles are the only team that does not play the shift against David Ortiz”
This is a lie. I saw them play back in April in Baltimore and they used the shift. The only reason I remember was because I had to explain to my girlfriend why the shortstop was playing behind 2nd base.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:05 pm
  • Ortiz strikes out. We don’t score this inning, but thanks to 2 previous successful innings it doesn’t matter much.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:05 pm
  • PApi Ks.
We fail to score, dammit. 4-0, Sox. Still.. alot of pitches for the starter. I smell a bullpen soon.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:05 pm
  • Such a shame. They’ve had at least two baserunners each inning. Still, capitalizing two out of four times is pretty good.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:06 pm
  • Real quick otu for Beckett. 2 pitches.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:08 pm
  • Ugh Base hit.
    Get a DP here Josh

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:09 pm
  • 3 quick strikes to make it a Sweet Six

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:11 pm
  • Beckett K’s Tejada on an AMAZING curveball. That was probably the sickest pitch I’ve seen him throw today.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:12 pm
  • HA! Take it, Tejada. Awesome. I love Beckett. (no matter how this inning/outing ends)

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:12 pm
  • Caught Steaqling to end the inning!

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:12 pm
  • Markakis caught stealing 2nd, perfect throw by Varitek. Beckett has thrown 40 pitches over 4 innings, and has faced only 1 batter over the minimum.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:13 pm
  • That’s just awesome.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:13 pm
  • He ws out by a good deal too. Nice.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:14 pm
  • Whats this kids pitch count at?

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:16 pm
  • Four pitch walk to Lowell with one out.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:16 pm
  • For those of you who aren’t watching on TV, the announcers just told an interesting story.
When it looked like the Red Sox were close to getting Gagne, Francona went to Papelbon’s apartment at 1am and knocked on his door while wearing his Red Sox uniform. Papelbon answered the door and Tito said that they needed to talk. Papelbon’s apartment was filled with boxes of memorabilia (he was signing autographs for fans the next day) so they went to the apartment building’s boiler room to talk. Tito told him that they were about to land Gagne and wanted Paps to know that Paps would remain the closer, but that Gagne would fill in some days when Paps was not available. Papelbon said he was fine with it and excited, so they parted and then the Sox got him the next day.
The mental picture of them in the boiler room, with Paps in his pajamas and Tito in his uniform, is hilarious. Reminds me of a spy movie.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:19 pm
  • Tek GIDP. First inning with so few pitches from Olson, so few baserunners from Sox.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:19 pm
  • You know what I’d like? One of those insane win streaks (not that the first two months weren’t pretty insane anyway) where they reel off like eight in a row. (Saw somewhere 5 was the max win streak this year.)
I’d like to start with, you know, one win of course.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:23 pm
  • Nice AB by Millar.. but ends ina groundout thnakfully

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:24 pm
  • Devine, remember the 12-game streak we had last year?
Once that streak ended we had a .380 winning percentage for the rest of the season. After that I’m kinda reluctant to see us win a lot in a row, and would rather see us win 2 out of 3 consistently.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:26 pm
  • FRAK

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:26 pm
  • I agree with Atheose. Im a firm beleiver in foucsing on winnign serieses

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:27 pm
  • Calm down Josh

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:27 pm
  • Last year, the Yankees max win streak was 5 games. They won 97. Win streaks are overrated.

    AndrewYF August 11, 2007, 5:28 pm
  • Heh. I see y’all’s point, but I would like to see clear-cut dominance while the Yankees go .500 or something. Mainly I just wanna breathe at like 10 games ahead. I have never been a proponent of the “exciting season” where the Yankees and Sox are close all year. Gimme an easy coast-to-coast season any day.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:28 pm
  • And he’s out of it!

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:30 pm
  • Shutout preserved. I’m going home. Maybe I’ll catch the last couple innings. Hopefully the essence of the game has not changed…

    Devine August 11, 2007, 5:31 pm
  • The Orioles make Beckett throw 20 pitches that inning, but he still gets out of it unscathed. 60 pitches after 5 innings.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:31 pm
  • Interestingly Devine.. I read an article about how, lately, teams that have ‘coasted’ tend to run into postseason troubles. I dont really buy into their reasonings, but it was an interesting statistcal tidbit

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:32 pm
  • There’s a great article on http://www.sonsofsamhorn.net that talks about winning streaks. Bottom line: there’s no corrolation between having a long winning streak and being a good team. Statistics actually show that teams do WORSE after having a 8-or-more win streak than they did before the streak. Interesting read, head over there and check it out if you get a chance.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:33 pm
  • Im seeign the promise the Orioles see in this kid this inning.
He’s got some stuff.. if only he can regularly harnesse it.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:36 pm
  • UGLY bunt attempt

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:37 pm
  • 1 pitch, 1 out for Beckett.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:40 pm
  • You know what’s funny Dionysus? Lately the teams that do poorly right before the playoffs are the ones who end up winning DURING the playoffs:
2006 Tigers: Slumped at the end of the season and got lost the division to the Tigers, but ended up going to the World Series.
2006 Cardinals: One of the biggest team collapses of all time, the Cards barely made the playoffs before going on to win the World Series.
2006-2007 Colts: Lost 4 of their last 5 games. Won the Superbowl.
2006-2007 Florida Men’s Basketball: Lost 2 of their last 3 regular-season games. Went on to win the SEC tournament and NCAA tournament.
2005 White Sox: Slumped in September and were almost caught by the Indians. Won the World Series.
2005-2006 Steelers: Slumped at the end of the regular season, but went on to win the Super Bowl.
Just a few examples in the last couple of years, but you get the point. Also, 3 of the last 4 World Series winners came from the wild card. So being dominant going into the playoffs is overrated.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:40 pm
  • Whoops, meant to say “slumped at the end of the season and lost to the TWINS”. Stupid typos.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:41 pm
  • Roberts nearly tags Beckett with a comebacker afte rbeign in an 0-2 count.
Double Play, Josh. and QUICKLY, before Roberts can run

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:42 pm
  • Pedroia makes a great play to get the lead runner out at 2nd.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:44 pm
  • Force play gets Roberts a second… but nice job by Pedroia to get the speedy Roberts on a tough hop.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:44 pm
  • The Red sox are 3rd in fielding?? Really? It doesnt feel that way at all! Is this a statistically weird year?
    Flyout to Crisp. Innign over.
Lets get to that bullpen right now

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:46 pm
  • Youk draws a one-out walk.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:51 pm
  • Youk turns a 1-2 count into a walk. Gotta love him.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:52 pm
  • Papi hits! Now everyone has reached base. Runners on first and third wiht one out.
    Orioles go to their pen

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:52 pm
  • Papi sends Youk to 3rd on a single. Shuey (giggle) coming in to relieve Olson. Come on Manny, stop sucking.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:53 pm
  • These Dane Cook PostSeason commercials have been growing on me.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:55 pm
  • Ugh Manny Ks on a hit and run

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 5:57 pm
  • Awwwww.
Ortiz stole 2nd base, but Manny’s bat hit the catcher in the headafter swinging, so they sent Ortiz back to 1st. And for some reason, the Orioles manager is arguing, even though Ortiz was sent back.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 5:58 pm
  • Also, they showed Ortiz going back to 1st, and he said “You should have let me have that one!” jokingly to the umpire at 1st, and put his arm around him. David Ortiz has to be the friendliest player in the world.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:02 pm
  • Nice catch for Drew

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 6:02 pm
  • Ortiz is big giant teddy bear.
So long as he doesnt have a bat in his hand :-)
THATS why even Yank fans love him. The arms around the Umps shoulders. The hugging the guy tagging him out.
So good for the game to have a guy like that.

  • 1-2-3 for Beckett. He is money.

    Dionysus August 11, 2007, 6:06 pm
  • The announcer just said “What Boston needs is for Lugo and Drew to start hitting. If you get those two things, then the Red Sox get into the postseason”
He’s acting like the Red Sox are a team barely on the cusp of the Wild Card, rather than the best team in baseball.

  • 83 pitches after 7. I don’t want to see our bullpen. I want to see Beckett on the mound when out #27 is recorded.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:08 pm
  • Im with you Atheose, but I think they will give Gange the 9th to try an restore his confidence.
    I will then vomit.

  • Beckett gets K #7. Great outing today, something we needed after blowing the save last night.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:31 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning on only 8 pitches, pitch count up to 90. Send him out for the 9th, Tito.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:33 pm
  • Stupid Brian Roberts. What an asshole.
Come on Beckett, close it out. Let’s see some strikeouts.

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:45 pm
  • Beckett sprinted off the mound and into the clubhouse, not talking to anyone in the dugout. Is he really pissed off, or does he just have to go to the bathroom really badly?

    Atheose August 11, 2007, 6:58 pm
  • Paps gets Mora on three pitches. Thank you very much!

pale blue eyes August 11, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Boston’s magic number is 42, with 46 games to play.
(The Yankee # is 53, probably 52 after tonight’s game… Up 7-1 early over Cleveland.)
