Top of the 4th, the Rick Ankiel show has continued. Singled in a run in the 1st. Royals up 1-0.
Ok, Rick Ankiel is starting to pester me…hits a double in the 4th.
Between last night and the 4th inning of tonight…
Ankiel is 6-6 with 4 RBIs and a HR.
Tek hit a HR off Greinke?
Tek and Hermidia with back to back jacks to right!!
Scutaro follows the HRs with a single, steals 2nd. Advances to 3rd on Ellsbury’s ground out to 2d.
Pedroia hit by a pitch.
1st and 3rd, 1 out.
V-mart ends the inning GIDP
Lowell’s third at bat, singles to center off Greinke.
Pretty good outing from Beckett thus far. Starting the bottom of the 6th and he has thrown 61 pitches.
Podsednik doubles to left to lead the inning off.
Rick Ankiel is up again….
not sure I can even stomach this.
Finally!
Ankiel pops out to Beckett. First time the guys has been retired in the series.
Greinke comes back out to start the 7th, 93 pitches so far.
Tek flies out to left. Scutaro is hit by a pitch.
Ellsbury doubles to deep right center, Scutaro scores, Ellsbury advances to 3rd.
3-1
Pedroia with a sac fly to center, Ellsbury scores.
4-1
Hughes in to replace Greinke
Guillen leads off the 7th with a double, Kendall singles.
1st and 3rd
Betancourt grounds into a double play, Guillen scores.
4-2
On the 10th pitch, Getz singles to center.
Dejesus singles to center, Getz scores.
4-3
Dejesus with a 7 pitch AB, that is 17 pitches between the last two batters. Beckett appears done.
Tito leaves him in to pitch to Posednik.
Podsednik grounds out to end the inning.
Sox need to score runs.
Youk with a homer to center to pad the lead.
5-3
Cameron pinch hitting for Hermida.
Okajima relives Beckett
Okajima with a clean inning
Tek homers again to lead off the 9th!!
Pedroia with a two run shot to left.
8-3
Sox with 12 hits tonight, 5 HRs (Tek 2, Youk 1, Pedroia 1 and Hermida 1).
V-Mart 0-5 tonight. The only starter without a hit. Cameron 0-1 in a PH.
Beltre in to play 3rd.
Ramirez in to pitch the 9th.
Game….8-3
Should be interesting tomorrow for the local writers. 5 HRs and Papi sitting the night out, with three bench players getting the start. Youk, Lowell and Hermida were a combined 4-10 with 3 HR, 3 RBI and 4 Runs scored.
Uh, I’m watching Sunday’s game. It’s 4-0 Sox after the top of the 1st! Anyone out there?
I am popping between the game and cleaning the deck
Seems like Hermida is continuing to play well.
I see Bill Hall is playing short today.
Papi with bases loaded, 1 out.
Papi strikes out after a 8 pitch AB. had fallen behind 0-2 and kept fighting. Perhaps what he needed?
Guillen takes Buchholz for ride to center.
5-2
I think Papi needed a hit. But I am of the give-him-time-party regardless.
Would be nice if Victor could throw out a base stealer on occasion.
Callaspo with a Sac Fly…
5-3
I wish Papi would have had a hit there also, i do think it is insane to judge a guy’s worth 1 week into the season.
Butler with a single. Buch seems to be nibbling the edges
Buchholz gets out of a jam. Callaspo was on third, Butler 2d. Get Guillen to ground out to the pitcher to end the threat.
Buch is not enjoyable to watch with runners on base.
And of course it’s way too early to judge Papi after one week.
I agree PBE, Buchholz tries to nibble the edges and finesse his way out of jams instead of just attacking the strike zone.
I am sure Papi is going to come out of his funk, I wonder how much of his success at times was hitting ahead of Manny. I know he can hit, but it has to help that there was a power hitter behind him.
Pedey with another dong!!
Pedroia cranks out a homerun to left field!
Third HR of the year.
V-Mart with a grd down the right field line.
Tejada replaces Meche
V-Mart to third on WP, Youk walks
Papi time
To come back to Papi: having hit Manny behind him sure helped. But he did not hit at the beginning of last season when he had pretty good hitters hit behind him. He did better eventually after they dropped him to the 5 spot. I wonder if he dug himself kind of a mental hole when he repeatedly complained that the Red Sox need another power hitter.
It would probably make sense to switch him with Drew in the batting order, but there are matters of pride and confidence involved, so I guess they cannot do that with a guy who used to be a franchise player.
Papi starts the AB out going 3-0..end up striking out as Youk moves to 2d on the K.
Talking about aging players: Posada has hit another homer for the Yankees. Does that guy not get older? He’s a catcher for god’s sake, he’s supposed to wear down.
And Papi strikes out again …
And Beltre drives in two!
I think he did possibly psyche himself out. It just seems that he cannot catch up to fastballs or hit off speed stuff.
Beltre doubles bringing in V-Mart and Youk.
8-3
Posada stays in that lineup because he can hit. Possibly not the best defensive catcher, but he seems to always get the job done.
With a five-run lead Buchholz digs himself a 3-0 hole and Kendall promptly hits a double.
Clay needs way too many pitches. Aitcheson warming up while we’re still in the fourth and have five-run lead!
Lead-of single. Clay is no fun to watch today regardless of the situation.
DP helps him out.
And then he walks the next guy. What is he so afraid of?
Guillen flies out. Now Clay qualifies for the win if the bullpen can get the job done.
Quick 1-2-3 inning for MDC with help from Jacoby who made a great catch.
With the help of the DP MDC faces the minimum for a second inning.
been working in the yard, came by to check the game. Papi with 3Ks.
Ramon Ramirez gives up a three-run homer to Guillen. What a lousy season he’s having so far. Two-run game now!
Guillen with his second dinger of the day.
Four Ks now for Papi. Pathetic. But I’ll force myself to be patient.
Papi may run himself out of town. He really needs to see witch doctor or team psych to work out his issues.
We have not scored since the fourth against the terrifying KC bullpen!
Strange catch from Cameron, one down.
Ugly collision between Ellsbury and Beltre. Ellsbury might well have hurt his shoulder.
He leaves the game, holding his ribcage.
Maier flies out to Drew who’s come in for Ellsbury. Two down in the 9th.
Bill Hall now has moved from shortstop to right field to left field.
Game over. This was not pleasant and should never have come down to us having to use Bard and Papelbon.
Let’s hope Jacoby will be ok or only miss a couple.
2 Wins in a row. Relief pitchers need to learn that the defense can’t help you if you allow it to be cranked out of the park.
