  • As I said in the other thread, I’d put good money on nothing being resolved tonight. Wakefield had a nice first inning, though.

  • I bet Bay’s AB will have been the Sox best chance to score until the 6th inning or so.

  • Listening to Chris Russo’s new XM show this afternoon on the way home from work. He went through all of the AL MVP candidates and concluded that he could vote for no one but Pedroia. Maybe Youkilis.

    I'mBillMcNeal September 23, 2008, 7:22 pm
  • It is a funny MVP race this year, isn’t it? If Quentin hadn’t broken his own hand, he’d have it in the bag.
Un/related: anyone have any thoughts on where Milton Bradley is likely to end up? That guy is goooood.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 7:27 pm
  • Wow, 4 Ks in 2 IP so far for Lee. The AL Cy Young race is pretty clear.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 7:35 pm
  • Oh, and the Yankees are already up 1-0. Sweet.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 7:36 pm
  • Yeah, it’s a good thing Lee isn’t on a playoff team. That’d be a pretty fearsome playoff game.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • I was hoping Marte would fly out to Coco.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 7:39 pm
  • Grady K’s. Foot comes off the bag, Sizemore on. Replay shows Casey got his foot back on the bag. Lame.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 7:41 pm
  • injury delay? who is hurt?

    rootbeerfloat September 23, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Nice to see Good Tim for the first few innings. Not that that’s any solid predictor of what’s to come, of course.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 7:48 pm
  • And even if Coco had grounded to 3rd, Marte’s not there anymore. What a missed opportunity!

  • youk!

    rootbeerfloat September 23, 2008, 8:01 pm
  • And Wake seems determined to give it right back.

    rootbeerfloat September 23, 2008, 8:11 pm
  • jeez, not realizing it i’m a half inning behind real time on tivo. i jump on yfsf to comment on how drunk johnny bench was during his half inning nesn interview, and see youk homers…..fast forward button pushed.

  • sweet.

    sf rod September 23, 2008, 8:16 pm
  • even sweeter.
is wake trying to get left off the post season roster again?

    sf rod September 23, 2008, 8:18 pm
  • the only thing that is official is my absolute inability to watch Wakefield pitch.
It sounds awfully disrespectful, but I am eager for his era to fade away.

    SF September 23, 2008, 8:23 pm
  • Laser Show!

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 8:41 pm
  • Speaking of the post-season roster… it’s obvious that the top 3 are Beckett, Lester and Daisuke (not necessarily in that order), but what about the #4 spot? Wake or Byrd? On paper Wake has better numbers right now.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 8:45 pm
  • Sorry for the spam, but GOD BLESS COCO!

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 8:45 pm
  • Where was this offense yesterday?
And why do pitchers throw Jason Bay strikes with the dreck (Sean Casey excepted) the Red Sox keep throwing up there for the final four spots in the lineup?
J.D. and Mike, come back soon!

    Paul SF September 23, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • SF – I couldn’t agree more with you on that one. Please, just go.

    brad September 23, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • Is it bad that I’m more excited about eliminating the Yankees than I am about clinching a playoff spot?

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 8:49 pm
  • If Lee doesn’t come out for the 7th, Wake had a better performance, numbers wise, than the potential AL Cy Winner.

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 8:50 pm
  • Ath – since a win covers both, I’d say it’s pretty good.

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • So Billsburg, what do you do for a living in this boring area? I work as a lab technician for a company on Jefferson Avenue, right next to the airport.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 8:52 pm
  • I’m a program manager for a major defense contractor supporting the USAF at Langley. That must be a tough drive from VA Beach, the tunnel must be hell.

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • Also, 38 married with 3 kids so I don’t get out much wouldn’t know if it was boring or not. Lived 1st 30 years in Southern New Hampshire, now that’s boring!

  • Any one watching, did Cora have a chance at Peralta?

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • Nice, nice. Yeah the HRBT is lame, but thankfully the traffic isn’t too bad for me. It’s worse for people who live on the peninsula and commute to the Naval Base.
By the way, if anyone is interested I just discovered the greatest thing in the world: Lez Zeppelin. Hot women singing Led Zeppelin? Glorious.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 9:02 pm
  • Cora didn’t have a chance, he made a FANTASTIC dive up the middle to stop it and keep the run from scoring. He instantly popped up and threw to 3rd, and almost got the runner trying to come back to the bag.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 9:03 pm
  • OKI!!

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 9:07 pm

    (I gotta get out more!)

If he gets 20 wins this season, is he a lock in?

    *snicker*

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • I think Lee’s a Cy lock.

    I'mBillMcNeal September 23, 2008, 9:17 pm
  • I know there are a lot of people pushed Pedro for MVP, but I’m leaning more toward Youkilis.
    Arguments, please?

  • Masterson relieving Oki? Whaaa?

  • Oh, oh. Trouble in reform land?
    This from the NY Times:
One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager from the end of 2005 through last month, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. The disclosure contradicts a statement Sunday night by Mr. McCain that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had no involvement with the company for the last several years.

  • IBM – I’d vote for Youk over Pedro, not sure the voting members will see it that way (probably won’t vote either above 3rd). But if Youk can get to 30HR and 120 RBI, maybe they will see things differently.

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 10:00 pm
  • At least we can sit back and enjoy the Yankee series this weekend instead of on the edge of our seats rocking back and forth like Tito during a bad Wakefield post season outing!

    BillsBurgSF September 23, 2008, 10:02 pm
  • Beating the AL’s best pitcher in a game to clinch something? Suddenly, the playoffs don’t look so scary.

    FenSheaParkway September 23, 2008, 10:04 pm
  • Bill, i’m inclined to vote for Yooks, too.

    I'mBillMcNeal September 23, 2008, 10:06 pm

    Bring on October.

  • pretty cool to see a guy like jason bay celebrating. after years of pirattude to champagne.

    sf rod September 23, 2008, 10:14 pm
  • Even though I was expecting this to happen — and I’m a little disappointed the Sox won’t win the division — this is really, really awesome.

  • paplebon is stealing things. i’m sure there will be a bill attached.

    sf rod September 23, 2008, 10:22 pm
  • OK, I am a bad person, and I went over to LoHud to see what they were saying. Here is one of the first comments I read: “you can be guaranteed that any celebration in craptown will resemble animals in a zoo. But then you kind of can’t blame them because ‘being there’ is something they really aren’t used to. They’re like the Beverly Hillbillies in that respect.”
Naturally, there are some SFs over there acting like jerks, so I don’t post this to make a point about all YFs or anything like that. But reading comments like that make me extra, extra excited about the Sox eliminating the Yankees from post-season contention.

    stuck working September 23, 2008, 10:26 pm
  • Anyone know where I can see video of the celebration? I’ve got MLB.tv but they don’t show post-game stuff.

    Atheose September 23, 2008, 10:39 pm
  • That said, stuck, I came back to offer my sincere congratulations to the NYY fans on a great run. While it’s nice to see a new face, it sucks to be golfing on Oct. 1.
You guys set the last standard. It’s ours now and we’ll treat it with respect. I promise we won’t give it away easily.
We all know you’ll be back so we can start hating each other in earnest again.

    I'mBillMcNeal September 23, 2008, 10:54 pm
  • Agreed, IBM.
And even though the division’s not a done deal yet, it’s not too early to also recognize the Rays’ amazing season. Especially because they just came back to take an 8th inning lead in their 2nd game at Baltimore. Damn.
Anyway, congrats to RFs, if they’re here for some reason.

  • I hope we will see many photos of the Red Sox celebratory festivities on this website tommorrow.
Drunken revelry will be much appreciated.

    SoxFan September 24, 2008, 3:47 am
  • If the Rays clinch the division today or tomorrow, it’s going to feel very strange to end the regular season with a totally meaningless Sox-Yankees series.

    Ron Newman September 24, 2008, 7:15 am
  • The pictures of Papelbon stealing bases and handing them to fans are great.

    Atheose September 24, 2008, 8:48 am
  • well, 24 hours earlier i commented that pap would have to keep his pants on 24 hours longer…now?…”off with your pants, and dance, strange boy”
congrats sox fans…tough season, but you did it…any thoughts about whether the team will make one more push for the division, or gear up for the playoffs by resting guys, and getting the rotation lined up?…
i like pedroia, and i’ve said i’d vote for him for mvp, but i wonder if his lack of power will turn away some voters…i remember that was the knock on jeter the couple of years that he was considered…i realize the competition has something to say about the ability to do a valid comparison of one player’s mvp year with another, so maybe jeter had stronger competition, but he also had some seasons that were simply better than what pedroia has accomplished this year, yet he was snubbed, because somebody had better power numbers…1999 for example…successful team?…yanks swept the braves and jeter hit .353 in the series…yeah, i know post-season doesn’t count, but it just tells you what kind of year he had…the ’99 mvp was none other than ivan-rod…rangers finished first in their division that year…while i-rod out-homered and rbi’d jeter, their SLG’s were about the same…jeter’s OBP was 82 points better…[ironically the yanks dispatched the rangers with a sweep in the div. series…jeter batted .455, while irod batted .250…yeah, i know, i know, post season doesn’t matter]…as for their respective regular season performances, i guess it just depends on one’s definition of “value”, but like chicks, it seems voters dig the long ball…sorry ped, if i had a vote, you’d get it…

    dc September 24, 2008, 10:54 am
  • left out the best part…jeter finished 6th [one 1st place vote] in the voting behind 3 power guys, roberto alomar, and pedro martinez…order of finish:
    irod texas
    pedro sox
    alomar cleveland
    manny cleveland
    palmeiro texas
    jeter yanks
    nomar sox

    dc September 24, 2008, 11:04 am
  • I agree, DC, that I-Rod should not have been the MVP and that Jeter should have finished far higher. But the rightful MVP that year was Pedro, without a doubt. And Manny had a good case, as well. That was just a phenomenal year for individual performance from a series of future HOFers in the primes of their respective careers.

    Paul SF September 24, 2008, 11:53 am
  • yeah, i certainly don’t disagree paul…pedro had a great year…i probably wasn’t clear, but i wasn’t so much making a case for jeter, but rather to point out that the only thing that distinguished irod’s performance from jeter’s was the power numbers…unfortunately that gets disproportionate consideration from voters…i didn’t intentially ignore the other candidates, all of whom had fine years, especially alomar…pedro probably didn’t get it for that debateable argument that pitchers have their own award, to which i say, so what?…this is one reason why i advocate 3 awards:
    mvp
    mos [most outstanding player]
    cy young
then you manke everybody happy…could a pitcher win all 3?…i don’t see why not, but you have a better chance of spreading around the hardware…
