Sweep For The gerbil: Yanks-A’s Gamer

A.J. faces ex-Yank Brett Tomko. I bet my friend Andrew that the Yanks would sweep. 18 holes plus beverages on the line. No, officer, I was not intoxicated at the time.

  • Tomko told Swisher he was getting a fastball in the ribs…said it in fun of course…But Tomko was not happy about his release. I wonder if?

  • Horse, meet front of cart. But he’s a die-hard Athletic supporter, deserved of charity.

    attackgerbil August 17, 2009, 10:27 pm
  • Hello, front of cart. Nice to meet you.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:31 pm
  • It feels like Tomko is barely escaping a pummeling. I don’t think he makes it through the lienup a second time.
The amount of movement on AJ’s pitches is astounding. I hope he can just control where they are going tonight.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:34 pm
  • And AJ gives up a leadoff single to the other Hairston.
Oakland’s field looks terrible. It’s not just the incongruous football-field yardage markers. It’s the worn outfield from the football game.
Posada guns down Hairston trying to steal. And then AJ gives up the walk.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:39 pm
  • Holy shnikies did the Yankees luck out there. Ellis crushes a ball that the aging Damon barely reaches and Sweeney, who was running on the pitch, doesn’t realize it’s caught until he’s at third. Easy DP that was about 2 inches from being an RBI double with one out.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:42 pm
  • Single for Pena. Really like this kid. He and Cervelli are the kind of mid-season easily-forgotten minor league call-ups who have really contributed well when they’ve gotten their chances.
Jeter singles – shortstops on first and second, no outs.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:46 pm
  • Damon with the second tattoed lloooonnnggg oufield-flyout of his night. This place is cavernous. Pena advances to 3rd. Let’s go Teix – Tomko’s luck must be running out.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:48 pm
  • Teix walks and A-Rod, who hits .500 off Tomko, is up with the bases loaded.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:50 pm
  • Hideous first pitch dink GIDP right back to Tomko. Nice A-Rod.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:51 pm
  • You’re lucky Krueg was not here for that A-Rod.
    AJ pitching to Cust.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:53 pm
  • AJ with his 3rd K of the game.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:54 pm
  • Aw, IH, I came in hear just to see what Krueg had written.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 10:54 pm
  • How’s this rbf:

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:57 pm
  • AJ adds a 4th K and pop-out so fast I can’t finish my Krueg impersonation. And Jorge grounds out on the first pitch from Tomko.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 10:59 pm
  • Thanks, IH, I needed that. With the Sox sucking, my only amusement is Krueg’s hysterics.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:00 pm
  • I’ve clearly cursed the Yankee bats by predicting Tomko’s early demise. They are making contact all over the place but no results. Two outs in the 4th.
How’s this: Tomko looks like he’s got shutout stuff tonight.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:01 pm
  • Are you kidding? Tomko is seconds away from giving up the ballgame. AJ already gave up the only hit he’s giving up all night. Jinxes can work both ways you know.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:03 pm
  • Swisher pops out to the second baseball field known as foul territory at Oakland Stadium and the Yanks go quietly. Ummm…this guy couldn’t survive in our bullpen and he is shutting us down through 4. Real nice.
And the Nats have 59 minutes left to sign Strasbourg.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:03 pm
  • AJ is 0-2 on everyone tonight. And he gets Kennedy on a grounder to 1B.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:05 pm
  • I really am cursing them. No sooner do I praise AJ then he gives up a double to the speedy Davis. I swear, if you calculated the ratio of Nick Swisher dives to his glove-side that yielded extra bases vs. outs, it would be somewhere on the order of 10:1.
And Davis steals 3rd with one out…a run here should be all Oakland needs with the DOMINANT Tomko pitching.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:08 pm
  • Clockwork. Suzuki singles in the RBI and a follow-up single puts A’s on first and second with 1 out. This blows.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:10 pm
  • AJ’s just toying with them. You know they’ll need at least 5 runs to give Tomko the margin he needs.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:11 pm
  • Ground out to Teix advances runners to 2nd and 3rd. Ellis, who was robbed of an RBI double earlier…

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:11 pm
  • He balked?

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:12 pm
  • AJ balks in a run. AJ has decided he wants to increase the difficulty tonight. Where is Krueg when I need someone to say the things I am thinking?!?
AJ nearly bites Girardi’s head off when he visits the mound and AJ give up a double now. 3-0. Really nice inning AJ. Thanks. I forgot what it felt like when this team played terribly earlier in the year. Thanks.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:14 pm
  • Yeah IBM. He did the full wind-up and motion all the way through, except never let go of the bal. And on replay it is not at all clear why not.
AJ K’s Cust to end the horror.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:17 pm
  • Sorry – I meant rbf, not IBM. You know – you Sox fans all look the same to us :)

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:18 pm

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:21 pm
  • Is it the single eye int he middle of our foreheads?

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:21 pm
  • Melky and Pena pop up HARMLESSLY. This is getting embarassing and silly. Brett Tomko is simply not this good. The Yanks are being blanked by a re-tread and not even making him work.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:22 pm
  • There he is! There’s our guy!
The A’s announcers (I live in the SF Bay Area) are saying they think AJ caught his cleat on something.
They are also reminding everyone that the yankees have never lost a 7 game lead in the second half.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:23 pm
  • :)

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:24 pm
  • Kreug steps in and Jeter knocks a single. Love it.
Yes rbf…either that or the third nipple you all have.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:24 pm
  • Losing this game would be truly embarrassing and would say a lot about our supposed “awesome team”…

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:25 pm
  • We need you Krueg – this is as pathetic as they’ve looked in a while.
And Damon Ks looking as I type the word “pathetic”.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:25 pm
  • You know Tomko is just loving this after his bitter departure from the Yanks this year. Nice charity Yanks bats.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:27 pm
  • Holy blown call. Did you see the replay of that third called strike to Damon? It was MORE than a foot outside!!
AJ gives up another single though there is at least one out.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:29 pm

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:29 pm
  • Pennington picked off first by AJ but only because Teix got back in the position that Jorge was supposed to be in for the pickle. Wake up Yankees!!

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:30 pm
  • Nice play by Pena to end the inning. He and Mark Teixeira are the only people playing tonight for the Yankees.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:32 pm
  • Don’t you know they are the Mighty Yankees IH? They just have to show up and the other team will kneel in fear…
    Just ask the f-cking Nationals.

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:32 pm
  • We call it a nubbin, IH.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:32 pm
  • Where do you live rbf? I was just out in Pacific Grove for vacation. Beautiful. I love that whole area.
Teix and A-Rod pop out so fast I don’t even have time to throw something at the TV in time to hit one of them. This is sickening baseball. Make the guy throw a pitch or two!

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:35 pm
  • I’m so glad I turned it off. Not wasting my time watching these bunch of losers.
Watching my Fins on NFL Network…much more entertaining.

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:36 pm
  • Palo Alto – so I get to watch the Sox twice a year on TV if they don’t make the playoffs. I can’t pull off mlbTV since I work in cubeland but I can at least listen to mlbRadio most days.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:37 pm
  • Do you guys have medical cards, seeing that you live in Mecca???

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:39 pm
  • AJ gets through 1-2-3 inning. On to the 7th. That was Breslow making the Yanks look foolish in the 6th by the way. Their suckitude moved so seemlessly from Tomko to him that I didn’t even realize a change had been made.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:43 pm
  • I don’t get half of what SF posts, but usually I can follow you Krueg. But that when rigth over my head….

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:43 pm
  • Huh – I had a couple meetings in Palo Alto the day before my vacation officially stayed.
And Cano K’s on a ball that bounced in the dirt. And he doesn’t even look all that disappointed. I seriously think they are mailing this in right now. The worst they’ve looked in a while.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:46 pm
  • What kind of work do you do that had you in PA? Where were your meetings?

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:47 pm
  • Swisher with a dble down the 3rd base line. We need something here. PLEASE!

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:48 pm
  • If you don’t know RBF, than you don’t have one…

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:49 pm
  • You either IH??? Bummer.

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:49 pm
  • Krueg, just got it…. no, no card here. Where do you live that it’s not legal?

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:51 pm
  • Just flipped back to the Yankee game…what a joke. This team has no killer instinct. NEVER WIN IT ALL! NEVER!!!
    Back to football…f-ck them.

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:52 pm
  • I do a lot of work with media for social change (media in conflict zones, etc) and I had mtgs with some new media types – some at the Facebook HQ and others at the homes of potential donors.
Melky crushes one but it’s an out to CF. Then Hairston pinch hits for Pena and flies out. Great job Yanks.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:52 pm
  • Redneck Tennessee…where Sarah Palin is an intellectual populist.
I would be a very happy dude if I lived in the Bay Area. A guy can dream!

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:53 pm
  • If I wasn’t watching the Fins right now, I would be f-cking nuclear over this sh-t effort by the team impersonating the Yankees tonight. I mean, Tomko? The A’s? Seriously? What possible excuse is there for this????

    krueg August 17, 2009, 11:56 pm
  • AJ still in. Two out none on in the 7th. He has only thrown 85 pitches but the only numbers that matter are of course 3 and 0…
I was so looking forward to watching the game tonight after 10 days on the West Coast when I followed on XM Radio and Gameday and this is what I am greeted by.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:56 pm
  • This seems like a haven for peopel who’d be interested in that, IH. Hope you had some success.
Krueg – I admit it’s great – but then I realize I’m raising two boys who think you shouldn’t go outside if it’s below 40 or think they’re melting when it gets humid.

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2009, 11:58 pm
  • Comebacker to AJ and the 7th is done. Top of the order coming up for the Yanks in the 8th. If they are going to wake up at all, now would be a good time instead of – you know – on the way back to the hotel.

    IronHorse August 17, 2009, 11:59 pm
  • Oh man, the weather must be PERFECT there…I am envious.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:01 am
  • Jeter with his 3rd hit of the night to leadoff.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:02 am
  • Damon lines out. He has smashed the ball all night with 0 results.
    Teix now…

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:03 am
  • Teix with a long out to CF. Two outs for A-Rod. The embarassment is almost complete…

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:04 am
  • Why do I flip back to the game??? Watched Damon the Douche line out and then Tex fly out to CF like a little bitch. The RALLY-KILLERS ARE BACK BABY!!! F-ck this team. Complete embarrassment. Shutout by Brett Tomko and the A’s. BUNCH OF F-CKING LOSERS!!!!

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:05 am
  • A-Rod walks. Jorge coming up representing the tying run.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:08 am
  • I predict a 4 pitch K…

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:08 am
  • Jorge goes down with the bat on his shoulder to some side-winding dude named Ziegler. I wish I had not wasted the last couple hours.
Yeah rbf, the trip was good for both work and pleasure. You live in one of the best parts of the country IMHO.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:11 am
  • How can you believe in a team that plays like this? Against this team? At this point of the season?
Answer? You can’t. We are paper champions.
Total embarrassment. No excuse. F-ck you Yankees.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:14 am
  • AJ goes the distance (at least as far as he can if the Yankees don’t miraculously come alive in the 9th) with one horrible inning ruining his – and my – night.
At least our bullpen is rested (yes, I’m reaching).

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:16 am
  • Let the losing streak begin…
    Lose this series.
    Get swept in Boston.
    Lose the Division.
    Miss the playoffs.
Fire Girardi and purge the roster.
    I kill myself.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:18 am
  • I don’t even know how they can look themselves in the mirror. They should all give their paychecks back for the week. You know, feed the poor in NYC for a year with it rather than CHOKE-ROD SPENDING IT ON HOOKERS AND BOLI!!! THEN, maybe the dickhead could not ground into a DP on the first pitch in the f-cking dirt with the bases loaded and 1 out. I hate them all.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:21 am
  • Ball game. And I use that term very loosely.
Last time they were shut out was June 23 – which was literally the day before their season turned around with the Cervelli HR vs. Atlanta. Let’s hope this blanking serves as the same kick in the behind. That was just awful.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:23 am
  • for your consideration:
    paper champions
is all we will ever be
    fucking die you dicks

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:23 am
  • They had better win tomorrow night like 12-1…but they won’t. We’ll get swept.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:25 am
  • Gerbs, please don’t ever bet on the Yanks’ success again. What does your friend get if the Yankees GET swept instead of sweeping??

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:26 am

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:28 am
  • F-ck it…i’m drawing the warm bath. Nice knowing you IH.

    krueg August 18, 2009, 12:28 am
  • I’m gonna watch the post-game for two reasons: 1. I feel I must do some kind of penance; 2. I want to hear Girardi say “we didn’t put in a good enough effort today”. He won’t – mostly because even if he feels that way he isn’t likely to say it publicly, esp. after such strong play for weeks, but I’m looking for a sign from him that he will kick someone’s behind, even if only in private.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:33 am
  • Krueg, there are people who love you. There are people who need you. Stay with us man. Stay…with……..us.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:35 am
  • I also want to know what the percentage of first pitch swings was tonight for the Yankees. They were hacking like crazy and displaying zero patience.
Enough. I’m out. I’ll contavt your next of kin krueg.

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 12:37 am
  • Krueg, I understand you wanting to say goodbye to this cruel world, since you do root for the Yankees. But don’t do it dude. ARod and TexMex aren’t worth it.
    Item two: kittens

    Atheose August 18, 2009, 7:11 am
  • krueg, hang in there…i [think] we’ll be ok…gonna be a speed bump here or there…maybe a couple of big ones with the 2 series we have left with boston…

    dc August 18, 2009, 7:28 am
  • It was my fault, guys. I moved into my new dorm room and wasn’t able to catch any of the game. I’ll try my best to watch tonight’s game.

    AndrewYF August 18, 2009, 10:13 am
  • Where do you go to school, Andrew?

    Atheose August 18, 2009, 10:35 am
  • Apparently AJ did not catch a spike on the balk that brought a run in and sent another runner to 3rd. Posada and AJ were crossed up, which apparently has now happened two games in a row when there has been a runner on second and the signs have been switched up as a result. AJ has gotten discombobulated and made mistakes as a result. It also happened twice in that one inning last night (the 4th) when AJ gave up one of the hits on a missed pitch-call.
AJ was careful not to take any shots at Posada, saying he hadn’t reviewed the video yet but he is sure it was his fault given that Jorge has been calling the Yankee games for years and later reiterating that it was probably his own dumb mistake, etc. But when asked how he was able to settile down for the remainder of the game, AJ said he was pissed after the 4th and just did everything he could to not allow a runner on second again because he didn’t want to get into that sign-switching position again. He also said that last night was the best he felt with the best stuff he has had and the best control he has had all year. It was clearly killing him that one screwed up inning of sign-mix-ups lost the game on a night that he felt so good (the guy did get through all 8 innings he pitched in less than 100 pitches and with only that one bad inning).
This is not the end of the world but it certainly is a little troubling. It’s not like this is the first game they’ve done together. Can they please get this problem ironed out?!?

    IronHorse August 18, 2009, 10:43 am
  • Plenty of time to figure it out. If an awful outing is 3 runs complete game by AJ, the Yanks should win that game most of the time.
That said, hopefully it’ll get figured out by playoffs..

Not sure, but it will probably go something like “I’m sick of taking the strap from you, gerbil. I’m sick a marchin’ down to this goddamn office to kiss your Chinese ass and I’M SICK OF THE HIGH HAT!”
And I will pay for a round of 18 plus cocktails.
