Sweet 16: Webb Wins NL Cy

Curious voting for the NL CY Young Award, won by Diamondback starter Brandon Webb today. He beat out out Padre closer Trevor Hoffman for the prize. Chris Carpenter and Roy Oswalt came in third and fourth respectively. The margin between these folks is awfully thin.

Webb: 16-8, 3.10, 178 k, 40 bb, 235 ip, 210 h (103 votes, 15 first place)
Oswalt: 15-8, 2.98, 166 k, 38 bb. 220 ip, 216 h (31 votes, 3 first place)
Carpenter: 15-8, 3.10, 184, 43, 221 ip, 194 h (63 votes, 3 first place)

Hoffman had 46 saves with a 2.14 era in 63 ip (77 votes, 12 first place). Not sure he belongs with the group above, let alone in second place. Or how Webb is so far head in first place voting. Go figure.

  • This reminds me of the “if the tree falls” thingy.

  • Maybe we just don’t follow NL (or don’t get promotional things sent by Diamondbacks). Looking back, very few of us guessed Webb, though obviously he had a fine season… My vote is still for Carpenter though, but I wonder how much of that is so “spread things around”..

  • Hoffman’s in there most likely because he broke Lee Smith’s saves record this year. Just a hunch.
I’m glad to see Webb win it. Oswalt was perhaps the better choice, but that’s arguable. NL pitchers were a pretty mediocre bunch on the whole this year, so it was pretty hard to make an outrageously bad pick.

  • I think Webb got it somewhat on the strength of this being a “breakout” season for him, even though he was a very similar quality pitcher last season. Oswalt and Carpenter? The writers/voters expected more out of those two, and didn’t get it.
Don’t get me wrong, and go back and check the picks I made, Brandon Webb deserved it for all the right reasons. But I think the “landslide” had to do with the above.
