The Battle For October: Yanks-Sox Gamer I

Kuroda held the Sox down well on Sunday. Lackey not so much with the Yankees on Saturday, though the offense bailed him out. One team fights for survival, still a game back from reaching a date with a 1-game playoff on 10/2, the other team fights to seal their seemingly inevitable place starting a little later in October. Oh damn, the Rays are facing the Twins this weekend (but at least they have subsequent 4-game series with the Rangers and O’s to follow, even if those series are at the Trop). Gonna have to beat the Yanks to get the magic number lower in the next few days (still at 8 this morning, as Farrell correctly held postseason bullpen tryouts the last 3 innings yesterday and gave the real bullpen a rest, ending up down a run thereby).

People will be happy, angry, sad. Someone will win and someone will lose. It’s the last regular season series for the century-old rivals, both of whom are doing much better than anyone expected at season’s beginning. Comment away.

  • Brett Gardner has a strained something or other and will certainly miss this series, sounds like. I don’t celebrate injuries, but I am not unglad to hear he won’t be killing the Sox again.

  • Much has I hate to see it, Cano did exactly what one should do against the shift. Bunt double.

  • 4-0 after 1, nice. Hope Lackey pitches better with the lead than he did last weekend in New York.

  • Lackey answers with a seven pitch 1-2-3 inning. Not too bad.

  • Squander, letting Kuroda off the hook again.

  • Lackey atones with a great defensive play to get the second out.

  • Lackey at 60 pitches after 5. He’s doing his job, but the Red Sox should have a bigger lead.

  • Ryan Stewart and Granderson go down 1-2-3, making Lackey’s life easier.

  • Amazing catch by Victorino, especially as his hip is clearly bothering him.

  • Wow, Lackey out of the game before Kuroda. Unbelievable.

  • Fans voting on NESN want to see the Sox play the Rays in the postseason. Yeah, we might be able to beat them, but I just don’t want to see them in October. I’m perfectly alright with wildcards from other divisions this year. Still rooting for Tito’s Spiders.

  • Why Koji?

pale blue eyes September 13, 2013, 10:06 pm
  • Koji indeed. So Farrell does not trust Morales or Britton to hold on to a four run lead?

  • Nine pitches get the job done. Koji now well into his second perfect game. Night everybody.

  • I’m debating whether to watch the wake I mean game today or just send flowers to the bereaved.
