When I was a kid, the Red Sox-BC spring training game was the calling card of spring.
It was a night game, it was on WSBK (in the days when NESN was not widely available), and even though the starters were all gone by the third inning, it was baseball, dammit, and we were happy for the opportunity to watch it — particularly because it was usually still too cold and snowy to toss the ball around outside just yet.
Nowadays, things have changed. The game’s during the day, it’s probably on NESN, which I don’t get, and even if I did, it would probably be blacked out because MLB apparently hates when fans get the opportunity to actually watch baseball.
One thing hasn’t changed, though. The Red Sox still know how to crush college kids. Unfair? Yes. Fun? Heck, yes. Like they say, it’s only hazing if someone gets hurt. Ok, they don’t say that, and a BC player has in fact gotten hurt, so never mind. The Sox lead 8-0 in the third.
If the game is viewable, comment on it here. If it’s not, comment here anyway.
why is it that espn will show the game as in progress, nd show the score, but omit the boxscore?
It’s not on the TV, radio, MLB.tv, MLB Audio, nothing, even the MLB boxscore is taking forever to update.
The only thing we have is Boston Globe Extra Bases Blog.
What a bummer, but it is baseball.
Remember me? Well despite the craziness of plannign a big move LIVE baseball action has brought me back to the intrawebz!
Anyway, Ric, You can get a supposedly Live box score off redsox.com. Other than that there isnt nay coverage till the SECOND game which will be broadcast on Gameday Audio (but not MLBtv).
Speaking of MLBtv.. I’m gettign a subscription this year as I can actually AFFORD it. Anyone know how much of a difference there *really* is between regular and Premium?
And in conclusion, may I note that no punk ass college kid is going to homer off of Beckett and get all kinds of sex for it. Oh HELL no. Beckett will be sleeping with ALL your girlfriends tonight boys.
“Anyway, Ric, You can get a supposedly Live box score off redsox.com.”
right you are, thank you sir
Wow. Nothigns updating Im gonna go walk the puppy.
welcome home dio.
Hey Dio, long time.
If by premium you mean their super player that they launched last season, I wouldn’t bother. I have the regular MLB.tv and it works fine for my Red Sox needs.
So there really isnt a difference in visual quality then?
Holy schnikies! 22-0 now!
Playing the college kids may be unfair, but this Boston U alum is always a little amused by BC getting crushed by the Red Sox every spring. Of course, BU scrapped their Baseball team before I started there, so maybe I’m still bitter.
They have Game Day for it, but it’s way behind.
“the scheduled third hitter for BC in the top of the sixth is sophomore Sam Shaughnessy, the Newton North grad and son of a certain Boston Globe scribe. He’ll be facing Manny Delcarmen.”
I’m not going to say it, but you know we all thought for a second, just a second.
my puppy thinks my right hnd is a chew toy.
Hit him in the nads, Lockland?
Now now, the son is not responsible for the actions of his father.
Sam doesn’t write for the The Heights sports section, does he?
maybe dustin should start looking over his shoulder after tony grandillo launched a granny.
There, now that’s the kind of beatdown we all like to see.
I remember a couple years ago, BC actually played the Sox pretty close. It led me to wonder if the Red Sox have ever actually lost any of these college exhibitions.
How does Tony Granadillo have the only Boston home run today?
Magic, paul.
Its not really the hits, thoguh the Sox have 14… its all the walks the BC guys are giving up (and the three errors). It makes me wonder if there is a difference between a college strike zone and a major league one (I presume this game is using MLB umps)
It’s probably the difference between college plate discipline and Major-League plate discipline.
moss is making his case. 3-3 thus far.
Another Question: So far the Sox have given up only one hit and that wasgiven up by Javier Lopez. Was the hit to a lefty? :-) I bet it was
Game over. 24-0, Sox.
Hooray for audio on the second game!
FSP, usually the son of a d-bag is off limits, but not for CHB, he’s a whole other level of d-bag, the build a new wing in hell for him, even his gardener is fair game.
My fail english? That’s unpossible!
the loan hit came from a kid named campbell. he’s the short stop, so best guess is he’s a righty, unless he’s a switch hitter.
Just finished checkign and Campbell is, sadly, a righty. No Lopez is useless jokes yet
Man I missed these gamers!
also, my puppy is INSANE. Fullblown attack mode! first the chewing of my hair then the removal of the leftovers of my peanut butter and bannan sammich formmy face, then a nother ttack on my hand. wait,.. what does she have NOW?
Paper towel oh man.. pieces everywhere
Yeah, showed those punks who was boss.
Good to start the season with a hard-fought win. ;-)
Also, byr-bye Mirabelli: George Kottaras goes 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI on two doubles.
i’m pretty excited to hear mastersons start tonite. sure it’s gonna be all of two innings, but the kid was electric in the games i saw him throw last year in lancaster.
“Also, byr-bye Mirabelli: George Kottaras goes 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI on two doubles.”
seriously- is it that hard to catch the knuckleball? are there actual baseball rules against using the joke big gloves?
http://www.markpatrick.com/images/MARK-GLOVE.jpg
Yeah Im pumped about Masterson too.. I just gotta pick which Mlb.tv package I want first. I wish there was alike.. a way I could buy a one day trial of each so I could view the different visual quality.
I wish the game was on XM. Gotta wait for tomorrow’s game against Minnesota instead.
“seriously- is it that hard to catch the knuckleball?”
To quote Bob Uecker: “I always thought the knuckleball was the easiest pitch to catch. Wait’ll it stops rolling, then go to the backstop and pick it up.”
omg, George Kotteras- be still my heart. If we get Jacoby and Kotteras playing everyday, I may faint. The hotness of the baby Jailbait Sox…. *swoon*
Oh yeah, and hooray for actual games.
Its on Gameday Audio, Paul. Only 15 bucks for the season
If Kotteras becomes a MLB-quality catcher this year, I will be more excited than for almost any other single player storyline this season. The Sox really need this to happen.
I wouldnt get too excited about Kotteras yet. These were collge pitchers after all.. everyone teed off. Now if he goes 2-3 with two doubles against soem MLB pitchers during Spring Training.. then, then I might start to hope
Agreed. Regardless of his georgeousness, we have two aging catchers and are in major need of a qualified catcher. I don’t know if Kottaras is it but it would be great if he quit having those borderline games and really served up some elite level consistency to be a legit back-up.
You know who we NEED?
Salty.
I’d be willing to trade Jacoby for Salty. Now thats trading to fill a need
I would love me some Saltalamacchia but I don’t know if losing Jacoby is the way to go. Definitely Moss for Salty but they’d never go down that easy. (then again, they are the Rangers)
Moss and Masterson for Salty? Moss and Bowden? Lowrie and Masterson?
I wouldnt get too excited about Kotteras yet
*cough* joke *cough*
koterras is a definite upgrade over varitek…might want to rethink that extension they’ve been mulling over…
pfft Kotteras = garunteed HOFer. Hell he’s probably a better pitcher than Pedro too!
he’d make a good president too if he wasn’t busy trying to make the sox…maybe he can just do president-type stuff in the off season, then have the veep fill in during the season….
Pedroia after the game, telling the press he had never played an exhibition against an MLB team when he was at Arizona State:
But, if he did, “we might have put a whupping on somebody,” he said with a smile as he left the clubhouse. “That’s how I’d have handled it.”
Awesome.
You know, sometimes I think Dustin Pedroia is a figment of our collective imaginations. I mean every joke we come up with he actually TOPS! If he’s not sayign how he would’ve whupped an MLB team when he was in college he’s texting Terry Francona during the offseason to say “Hide the women and children. I started hitting today”
So. Awesome. I LOVE MY TEAM
Ok. I went with the Premium Why the hell not? Teh So xare worth it.
ahhh Boston commercials…. been awhile.
Coco doubles to lead it off. Passed ball gets him to third. Cora grounds out, plating Crisp
Drew gets a ground rule double. ManRam gets a loud cheer. Joe and co talka lot about how in shape he looks. I hope its true.
Interesting this is the Huskies first game outside. Full count on Manny, hunh. Manny walks!
The Mayor (yay) takes what SHOULD be ball 3, but the ump feels bad for the Huskies already. NOW its ball 3. Casey flies out.
Dougie gets a long AB going and pops out, ending the inning. Oh Dougie.. Kotteras is coming for you
Lets see if Justin can have another fine inning
Ouch. HARD signle off of Masterson. come on kid.. get a DP here
I get my wish! Masterson gets the double play, erasing the runner. and a flyout ends the inning. Nice job kid.
WOW. Lowrie gets a double ROBBED from him. Amazing.
Only 12-0? Terrible performance from the B team tonight.
Looks like Masterson and Hansen were both strong — but then it’s really only significant if they DON’T do well in games like this, and even then, not so much.
you know you love baseball when you get excited about a stinkin’ scrimmage against a bunch of students…kidding…glad you guys had fun…gets the juices flowin’ don’t it?…
“MLB apparently hates when fans get the opportunity to actually watch baseball.” You’re absolutely right. MLB.TV or whatever its called is utterly useless, in my opinion. I’m a Jays fan living on the East Coast of Canada and according to Google Maps, live 1,798 km away from the Rogers Center. Guess what? I live in the Blue Jays blackout zone! I don’t have a sports package for my TV, and would love to subscribe to MLB.TV as it would allow me to watch games wherever I am (work, home, etc) but all of the games are blacked out. I hope they change this policy this year as they currently consider all of Canada to be in the blackout zone. Anyway, here’s to the start of baseball, and to the hope that is the start of a fresh season.
