The Long Rivalry: Yanks-Sox Gamer MMXLV

Tonight, if they get the game in, will be the 2,045th meeting between the teams once known as the Boston Americans and Baltimore Orioles.

Some fun totals to whet your whistle for game time:

  • The Yankees lead the overall series 1,112-932 — a .544 winning percentage
  • Take out the Dark Ages of 1920-32, and the Yanks' lead drops to 914-844 (.520).
  • Take out the Dead Ball era, and the Yanks' lead surges to 932-716 (.566).
  • Since Theo Epstein took over as general manager in 2003, the series stands 62-62 in the regular season, 7-7 in the postseason.

Someone will obviously take the lead tonight… if they play (which looks highly doubtful). If they do, or if they don't, comment away!

We'll provide some more fun individual totals tomorrow.

  • Anyone see the Jim Rice quote regarding Jeter? Classy guy, that Rice.
    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/llws09/news/story?id=4414291

    nettles August 21, 2009, 6:32 pm
  • It wasn’t specifically about Jeter, just about this generation as a whole.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 6:42 pm
  • Yeah nettles – saw it (thanks to rbf) and just commented on it in a different thread. It is laughable, unclassy, unjustified (certainly in Jeter’s case), and – when you consider that he named only guys who are either seen as having snubbed the Sox or who are Yankee stars – pretty much a joke.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 6:44 pm
  • > about Jeter
Too bad Rice can’t afford to patch the holes in his jacket out of which names keep dropping.

    attackgerbil August 21, 2009, 6:46 pm
  • He certainly called out Jeter, though. He named three names: A-Rod, Manny, & Jeter.
The funny thing is, players from the 40’s and 50’s said the same thing about Rice’s generation of players that Rice said about this current generation of players.
    It’s almost comical.
Rice pulled the classic “Kids, what’s the matter with kids today?” routine.

    Guest August 21, 2009, 6:47 pm
  • Actually, yeah it’s pretty stupid to include Jeets in with the other two. Why the hell would he mention him?

  • Billy Wagner shall henceforth be known as Gagne 2.0 until he proves otherwise.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 6:50 pm
  • Billy Wagner will be a curse. You seriously don’t want this guy. And if he starts trotting out in Yanks-Sox games to “Enter Sandman” I will not be responsible for my actions or words.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 6:53 pm
  • Yawn. Can we have a bunch of outraged posts the next time Goose Gossage says something about Jonathan Papelbon and this generation of baseball stars? Retired players think the game was better in their day. They’re romanticizing the past, something we all do to some extent. The best thing to do is ignore and move on.

    Paul SF August 21, 2009, 6:57 pm
  • the rice thing is comical. the players of this era have nothing on the inglouious baterds of the disco and coke era. did you know his hof plaque actually has an illustration of grandpa simpson?

    YF August 21, 2009, 7:01 pm
  • Well Paul, if what Goose says about Papelbon in your hypothetical is true it would be sort of different than if it were not, no? What Rice said about Jeter is simply wrong on every count.
And romanticizing the past in general terms is altogether different from calling otut spcific players – which is itself different from calling out only players who irk the organization and fanbase you played for.
I’m not outraged – I’m commenting that I think Rice acted like an ass and that what he said is patently untrue. Not sentimentally gushy about the past mind you though it is also that. But untrue about the present.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:05 pm
  • IH, you know we would never allow that at Fenway. That song is, and will always be, Mo’s.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:05 pm
  • “It is laughable, unclassy, unjustified (certainly in Jeter’s case)”
“And if he starts trotting out in Yanks-Sox games to “Enter Sandman” I will not be responsible for my actions or words.”
Oh, brother. Get over yourselves. And that’s the same thing I’d say to Jim Rice.
Guess & YF, I think you have the appropriate responses.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:06 pm
  • Wow, this is a horrible NESN opening. What the fuck.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:08 pm
  • More importantly:
    – Bowden activated, and it looks like he’s up for the long haul, out of the pen; Cabrera DFA’d.
    – Baldelli off the DL; Anderson sent down.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:09 pm
  • Bowden and Baldelli? Score!

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:10 pm
  • REMDAWG! YEAH!

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:13 pm
  • IBM, my wagner comment is in jest. As for the Rice thing, when Reggie comes out and lambasts today’s PED users, naming only Ortiz, Manny, and and Clemens, I’m sure I’ll marvel at the high road you take.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:13 pm
  • Pre-game questions:
    – How long will this game last, time-wise?
    – Who gets plunked first?
    – Who dishes out the first plunking?
    – Who is the recipient of the retaliation plunking?
    – After which plunking do both benches get warned?
    – What is Penny’s pitch count after 4 innings?
    – What is Pettitte’s pitch count after 4 innings?
    – Which YFSF poster makes the first snide remark (once the game starts, that is?)

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:13 pm
  • Jeets! kix things off w/ style.

    YF August 21, 2009, 7:14 pm
  • Actually a more accurate comparison would be if Reggie named Manny, Ortiz, and Pedroia.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:14 pm
  • Wtf? Remdawg is in the booth, we hear him make two comments, and then the NESN sound goes out.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:15 pm
  • Oh great, and now they’re using the radio guys along with the video feed, and the radio is 5 seconds ahead of the video.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:16 pm
  • Broken shin.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:17 pm
  • Horse, I’m not real big on Rice’s comment, either. To me, it wasn’t even worthy of a response. But I’m also not so big on the “Oh, my God, how dare he insult Derek Jeter,” stuff, either. There is no one in baseball above reproach. No one. As silly as Rice’s remark was, I have a hard time believing that there isn’t a shred of truth to it.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:17 pm
  • Oh wow, the way Damon went down and was in pain I was sure he broke something. But he’s up and back in the batter’s box now.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:18 pm
  • Penny hitting 98. Wow.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:21 pm
  • Was Jeter’s leadoff double a homer in Yankee Stadium?

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:21 pm
  • Nah, far short of the Pesky Pole.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:23 pm
  • Of course no one is above being critiqued IBM. Jeter gives boring interviews. There. But he wears dreads? Too-baggy a uniform? Cares about his stats more than winning? Used/uses PEDs? You may find it hard to believe that there is no shred of truth in these allegations. I’d suspect you’d be in a tiny minority.
As for the more important thing – the game – I am stuck on Amtrak and can’t watch or even listen for the next hour. Gotta rely on the YSFS commentary and gameday updates on my b-berry…

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:23 pm
  • GREAT stop by Gonz, but he’s unable to get up in time. At least he knocked it down.
Come on Penny, get another GIDP ball like that.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:23 pm
  • 2 big K’s. Both rather far outside to lefties.
    He still needs one more.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:24 pm
  • Joe West’s strikezone is an effing joke. The pitches Damon and Matsui struck out on weren’t even close (confirmed by Pitch FX)
Does Penny usually throw this hard or is it a fast gun?

    Mark - YF August 21, 2009, 7:25 pm
  • No surprise there, Yanks up 2-0.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:25 pm
  • Big strikezone tonight. Let’s see if it’s the same to Pettitte too.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:25 pm
  • Damnit Devine, you’re about 30 seconds ahead of me.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:26 pm
  • My guess is fast gun, though he does have a live (and straight) fastball.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:26 pm
  • Sorry, Ath. Hopefully I’ll bear good news occasionally. How are you watching? I’m on cable’s Extra Innings.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:28 pm
  • Broken-bat grounder to 2nd. You can expect the Yanks to score about 5 or 6 off Penny tonight.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:29 pm
  • Mlb.tv for me. Though I’m leaving to watch Brad Pitt kill gnat-zees. Here’s hoping for an 8 hour game so I can see some when I get back!

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 7:30 pm
  • Only 28 pitches. Whoopeee!

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:31 pm
  • Damon out, Hinske in.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:32 pm
  • Ellsbury works the walk, unlikely he’ll steal the record-tying 54th base with Pettitte on the mound.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:34 pm
  • Horse, I think we’re both howling at the moon.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:34 pm
  • Tyler Kepner on WEEI this morning said that the Yankee brass has been very pleasantly surprised at how good the Yankee defense has been this year. Said Cash told him in the spring that he though the defense would be awful.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:35 pm
  • Oh wow, he did steal it. Cool.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:36 pm
  • Atta boy, Ells.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:36 pm
  • they should have stopped the game and had posada come out to second and take a few pictures with jacoby.

    sf rod August 21, 2009, 7:37 pm
  • Gotta take advantage of the Pettitte wildness early. It’s not likely to last. (2-0, NYY, RS runner on 3rd, 1 out, Horse)

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:41 pm
  • Just read the Rice article…How does he (a marginal HOF’r) not deserve some sh@t for that comment? Manny, Alex and Jeter lumped together? Take PED’s out of the equation, they are nothing alike. Other than having a Penis what do those 3 have in common baseball wise? Nobody is above criticism but on the baseball field in the context of how the game is played and the example he is for kids Jeter does not deserve or warrant comments like that. As for the whole tired thing, Goose is a loudmouth but that doesn’t excuse Rice’s comments. He chose his words and examples poorly, bottom line. It’s not ok because ____ did it first.

    John -YF August 21, 2009, 7:42 pm
  • Cool, a run.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:43 pm
  • Big Vic w/ sac fly, ells scores, 2-1, ,2 out.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:44 pm
  • First inning took more than half an hour, 54 pitches combined.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:46 pm
  • Pettitte w/ a very Dice-K-like first. 0 hits, 1 BB, 1 K 1 run, 26 pitches.
That m,akes a 54-pitch first inning that lasted, what 40 minutes?
We’re in for a long one, boys.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:47 pm
  • I guess I root for Tuberculosis in the TB/Tex match-up?

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:49 pm
  • Thanks for the update IBM. By the way,Cash publicly said during spring training “our defense is bad”. It was startlingly blunt and negative a comment before a single game had been played, though I also thought it was going to prove accurate.
John, I literally laughed out loud at the “Other than having a penis…” remark. And suffice it to say I couldn’t agree more.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:49 pm
  • Devine, I’ll quitely root for the Cowbelles. Other than the Sox, they can’t beat good teams.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:52 pm
  • IH, it would be like _____ saying “Papelbon, K-Rod and Mariano”…Reminds of that song, one of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same…
BTW IH, not going to day game, but I will be at September 8th game I believe, Beer up!

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 7:52 pm
  • Cannot believe some of Joe West’s calls here, way generous outside to lefties. Well, with that run scoring and 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, I’ll switch to videogames for awhile, I think.
    Penny sucks.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:56 pm
  • Bowden, please? Please????

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:56 pm
  • I’ll be there John – meeting at Mohegan Sun??
If there is a YF who has a chance to run Jeter’s hitting stats over this longest road-trip of the year, I’d love to see it. If not, I’ll do it when I get home. I think he’s literally around .500 for the past week.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:58 pm
  • Perhaps I was under-selling the number or fns Penny would give up. At any rate, the videogames sound ever better.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 7:58 pm
  • 5-1. Penny getting bitch-slapped. Where the fuck is Rob?

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 7:58 pm
  • Actually John, given what Manny was caught taking this year I’m not even sure the 3 of them have that in common.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 7:59 pm
  • Most definitely IH, we’ll talk before hand.
The Yankees are smoking the ball. Nice play by Bay.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 8:00 pm
  • Obviously, Penny and Vic are not on the same page (comment made with dripping sarcasm.) Matsui out on a fly ball that would have been an easy home run in NY.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 8:01 pm
  • Matsui pushes Drew all the way to the wall…just missed it.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 8:01 pm

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 8:30 pm
  • They’ve let Pettitte settle in. This game’s over.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 8:44 pm
  • If Varitek plays anytime in the series the Yanks should really use that shift.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 8:51 pm
  • Well this time the old park can’t hold Matsui.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 8:55 pm

    I'mBillMcNeal August 21, 2009, 8:55 pm

  • Bowden starts his windup as if he’s a knuckleballer…that’s an odd look.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 8:55 pm

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 8:56 pm
  • Mass and Texas playing a great one over on ESPN fellas…

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 8:56 pm

  • krueg must be in a bar having a great time with this game right now…,make my weekend,Yankees!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:08 pm
  • 11-1, Jeter hustling down the line to beat out the DP…what a poor example he is. (I know beating a dead horse…)

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 9:09 pm
  • Somehow I am sure Krueg is finding something to be unhappy about…(for the sake of luck of course)

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 9:10 pm
  • Well at least there’s plenty of room for Marte to throw a few innings.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 9:11 pm
  • Agreed,John. Luck a-plenty it is tonight. Not only luck though. A-Rod is hitting!! What a rivalry doesn’t do to a team!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:14 pm
  • You have to start feeling bad for this kid, 40+ pitches in this inning, bases loaded…countless runs in. Yikes. Poor kid.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 9:15 pm
  • Matsui: what a choke.

    YF August 21, 2009, 9:16 pm
  • Oh,Matsui had the chance to break things open here with a grand-slam. But ok,I take the 11-run lead.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:17 pm
  • I am going to capitalize on this lop sided game and go to bed early. Thanks for some interesting conversation this evening fellas.

    John - YF August 21, 2009, 9:18 pm
  • I really like Bowden pitching,I said that already,it’s just that he’s thrown in the fire here and that was too much pressure for young unexperienced players. But Boston has a good arm there.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:19 pm

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:29 pm

    John -YF August 21, 2009, 9:47 pm
  • Sox wish they had Varitek defense skills and V-Mart’s offense-in the same person. No such luck,he might as well play standing(V-Mart) letting balls through the legs…

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 9:47 pm
  • I am increasingly turning my attention to the LAA, who are quietly matching the Yankees’ hot play of the last several weeks. If all continues to go well, it will be a big deal to end the season with a better record than those guys given what a house of horrors LA has been as a venue for the Yanks.

  • He-l, take him out, you got a full bullpen, pick one and throw him in!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:19 pm
  • My point,Andrew. And the couple in the stands, she was looking happy and embarassed at the same time, nice though. He gets to get married and watch the game ;) When they were about to kiss there was that loud out that Swoosh made by the sox bullpen.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:21 pm
  • Good job,Marte, welcome back. Mitre warming.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:25 pm
  • Bruney in so long for W…H…A…T……..R…E…A…S…O…N!?!?!?!

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 10:25 pm
  • I wish they’d let Marte through the 8th,but maybe Mitre is pitching next..

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:28 pm
  • Maybe to get ERA down. Only explanation I came up with.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:32 pm
  • oooo, come on,offense. Joking. No sox fan around anymore. I guess.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:35 pm
  • I say Mitre should be used in bullpen and big leads.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:38 pm
  • Meh. Just get a minor miracle win out of Tazawa tomorrow and we can dream about series victory. Good thing the runs don’t carry over.

    Devine August 21, 2009, 10:45 pm
  • HIT!!Double, yeah!! Would have been a single if Ellsbury didn’t try to do too much.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:47 pm
  • hahaha, matsui!!!Kicking the dead dog over the curb, man!!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:50 pm
  • Yeeeeesh, a “lets go Yankees” chant in Fenway. I guess that’s all who’s left.

    AndrewYF August 21, 2009, 10:50 pm
  • I will consider it a moral victory if we can hold the Yanks to under 20 runs.

    SoxFan August 21, 2009, 10:52 pm
  • only Swisher without a RBI so far, come on man!!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:53 pm
  • 20!

    YF August 21, 2009, 10:55 pm
  • yeah, baby!!! RBI parade full!! Damon guest of honor,he would get at least an RBI for sure if stayed in.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:55 pm
  • oh, Melky, you are gonna pay for this NOT-RBI.Joking,boys, we talked a lot about the Yankees offense,we should ask Boston how it REALLY feels like.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 10:56 pm
  • Varitek homers. That’s definitely NOT the Red Sox night.Wow

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 11:00 pm
  • Mitre, you can make people very nervous with a 12 run lead in the ninth. I say you go seat!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 11:02 pm
  • Pettitte (and Bruney) picked the right game to suck. A-Rod with a monster night. Every Yankee with an RBI – crazy.

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 11:03 pm
  • Sh-t mitre,get the f-cking out!

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 11:05 pm
  • Mitre has the incredible ability to make this game get into a save situation. Holy sh-t,I son’t believe how much he suck

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 11:08 pm
  • Lowell homers.
    20-11 now.
    Do you believe in miracles?

    SoxFan August 21, 2009, 11:08 pm
  • OK, add Mitre to the “picked the right game to suck” list.
On a related note, why do the Red Sox and Yankees not know how to play a “normal game”? You know, 9 innings in under 3.5 hours with a score like 5-3?

    IronHorse August 21, 2009, 11:10 pm
  • That would make them normal teams,IH? When they clash things get out of the ordinary. That’s one of the reasons it’s the biggest rivalry ever. Hope we get a good one tomorrow and a CC-like outing Sunday.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 21, 2009, 11:13 pm
  • Well this is some fucking bullshit. My girlfriend texted me saying “12-4 in the 6th”, which one would assume means my team is winning. But no, she did it backwards. Fucking hell.

    Atheose August 21, 2009, 11:40 pm
  • As I recall, this is not the first time this has happened to you, Ath. Chick really needs to learn to put “Yankees” or “Red Sox” on the end of a score.

    Devine August 22, 2009, 12:21 am
  • That hurts ath. Better to get no update.
So is Ingl Bast’s as good as most of the reviews say it is?

    IronHorse August 22, 2009, 12:49 am
  • Just got home. Hammered. Awesome.

    krueg's ghost August 22, 2009, 12:53 am
  • Penny is having quite the Ponsonian season, isn’t he? And for only $4.5 million more!

    AndrewYF August 22, 2009, 1:49 am
  • I can see why you take joy in it, Andrew. But honestly, who cares about the cash?

    Devine August 22, 2009, 5:42 am
  • Man,and to remember I said earlier last night it was gonna be a 30-run game… Crazy…Godzilla all over Fenway last night.

    MikeFidborg-YF August 22, 2009, 10:56 am
  • Yeah, Inglorious was fantastic. There’s also a hilarious Red Sox/Fenway/Ted Williams reference in the movie too.
Tarantino’s movie are usually hit-or-miss, but this one hits. Tons of suspense, fantastic dialogue, excellent acting, and it’s hilarious. Just a fun movie overall.

    Atheose August 22, 2009, 11:22 am
  • That is awesome to hear Ath…LOVE QT! (hetero love, not that there’s anything wrong with that)
I can’t wait to hear if IH watched “Four Rooms” yet.
P.S. Man, I am struggling this morning. WAY too many beers last night. Met a couple cool SF’s last night. Got to play Sinatra on the jukebox after the big win, shots…craziness. It sucks I can’t watch the f-cking game today. I HATE FOX SATURDAY BLACKOUTS!!!

    krueg's ghost August 22, 2009, 11:27 am
  • Dude, someone told me to watch Four Rooms the other day. I’m downloading it as we speak.

    Atheose August 22, 2009, 2:23 pm
  • It is an awesome movie…we were having a conversation on the Yankee Gamer the other day and IH hadn’t seen it either. You are in for a treat my friend!
