The Reverse Jinx Works!!!

On June 28th of this year, I wrote the following:

Dear fellow Yanks fans,

It is over.

All the best,
Nick

This, my friends, is how you execute a perfect reverse jinx. Make it succinct (anyone else think this letter has a Hemingwayesque quality. Think about all the words left unsaid. The letter’s true meaning can be found in the gaps of silence behind the stated words) so it has that quality of fate that cannot be reversed.

From that moment on the Yanks have gone something like 82-15 (thanks, Baseball Reference!). There”s no need to thank me. I was just in the right place at the right time.

  • the yankees won’t win the world series this year.

  • A-Rod won’t win the mvp.
There won’t be a mixup in the mailing of my playoff tickets to me that results in me getting seats directly behind home plate.
There won’t be peace in the Middle East.

  • The Red Sox won’t get beat by an A-Rod homer in the bottom on the 14th inning in Game 7 of the ALDS in Boston after the Red Sox lead 7 to nothing.
What can I say, I have a wild imagination.

  • Joe Torre will not be back next year to defend his 5th ring…

  • there will be no need for a desperate move after all eligible first basemen don’t succumb to season ending, DL inducing hamstring pulls, and the yankees will not activate fan favorite donald arthur mattingly, who will not hit a walk off grand slam in game 7 of the world series.

  • There won’t be another B moment as Josh Beckett, after 8 2/3 innings, won’t give up a walk-off home run to Bobby Abreau to complete Andy Pettite’s first perfect game, a 1-0 Yankees win, and a 4-0 sweep of the Red Sox in the ALCS. That definitely won’t happen. Never. No way.

  • Jimintokyo: Speaking of B moments, how is it possible that Bubba Crosby got out of NY without some knife-to-the-heart moment against Boston? Babe/Bucky/Boone…BUBBA

  • As a HUGE Sox fan I’ve just got to say – if the Yankees win the Division they certainly deserve it. I will admit a bit of smugness while the lead was double digits, but once again RSN was reminded to never, ever count out the Yanks.

Perhaps because all of that is Bullcrap? (with a B!) :) In 2004 I thought we’d end up facing the Astros and all their “Killer B’s” (Bagwell, Biggio etc)… made me very nervous.

A startling lack of talent, I imagine.

  • All the reverse jinxes by YFs above will work like a magical charm, granting them their greatest hopes and dreams.

  • SoxFan’s prediction will come true, and he or she will win the lottery at some point in the future.

  • No no, Nick, just saying that you’re entering a world of pain.

  • Not 82-15, just 55-29 …. still quite impressive.
