The Start of Something: Yanks-Astros Gamer I

CC Sabathia gets the rock today as the Bombers begin their 2014 campaign on the road against second-place Houston, who by not playing already look better than they looked last season. BP has them projected to allow 807(!) runs, most in the majors, but the Astros do read to be a better team, even if it is because it’s nearly impossible to be worse and because of a deep farm system including future superstar Carlos Correa.

Lineups when I have them, enjoy the game and comment away!

This is scraped from Chad Jennings at LoHud.. still figuring out what will work for getting lineup feeds that I can do active editing and relinking to deeper stats, and as such don’t have a ‘stros lineup to see the head-on against CC/lefties.. Gosh, I’m glad to see real baseball.

Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Derek Jeter SS
Carlos Beltran RF
Brian McCann C
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alfonso Soriano DH
Brett Gardner LF
Brian Roberts 2B
Kelly Johnson 3B

  • 1/2 hour of kick-off festivities.. maybe I get to watch 2 innings? Then I go coach farm ball. When I get back I may catch the very tail of the game but I will likely be reading box scores.

    Let’s GO *clap* *clap* *clap*

  • Farm ball?

    krueg April 1, 2014, 5:37 pm
  • Little League for 6-9 year olds.. kids don’t pitch; machine or coaches do. No hits longer than a double. It’s what comes after Tee ball and before when kids start pitching.

  • That is really funny, krueg.. when I first read it I did a double take. But everything on the “not posi-tive” in that top post was about the Stros, not our zoo. I am in too good of a mood to get too down about them, and write about it. For at least three more hours.

  • NICE! Love it. I am cautiously optimistic and excited. I missed the Bombers!!!!

So what are your pitching stats in Farm Ball? (I know you Dad’s keep them)

    krueg April 1, 2014, 6:22 pm
  • Are you around IH?????

Probably in an undisclosed location saving the world. Maybe I watch too much TV but I think IH is in the CIA.

  • The hardest part about pitching/sending in farm ball is that regardless of who is at bat, I really want each kid to knock the snot out of the ball. They are so eager and anxious, and for the most part really raw. You can see their anticipation and concern in their faces, and it is contagious; you want them to succeed. It’s a picture of joy when they leg out their base hit.

But! There are also some kids, usually just one or two on each team, mostly with elder siblings, that know what they are doing when they are 6(!) with a bat and then I hope I have the reactions so they won’t break my face when they hit a comebacker because the geometry is pretty short.

Greatest game ever. But I’m coming around on soccer.

  • To answer your question, I like to serve dem meatballs.

  • That is the only thing that ever makes me even think I want to be a dad…the cool sports stuff.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 6:51 pm
  • Less than 20 minutes until first pitch…

    krueg April 1, 2014, 6:51 pm
  • So that’s how it’s gonna be. “High and tight!” If this is the last time I see you, remember this, says Scott Feldman.

  • Jeter got hit in the forearm. Not cool.

Otherwise, nothing to report. CC is on for the bottom of the 1st. He is looking pretty fit these days. No more fat jokes.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:20 pm
  • CC looking very pedestrian…some might say ’13-ish so far.

    0-1 Houston.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:25 pm
  • This is a comedy of errors.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:28 pm
  • 0-2.

Even Tex is fucked. This is an atrocious inning. Just get out of it now CC.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:30 pm
  • HR.

    0-4.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:31 pm
  • 0-4 after 1.

    It finally ended.

OK, let’s get the bats going.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:35 pm
  • Leadoff HR.

    0-5.

No hits through 2 for us. Not a great start.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:49 pm
  • 0-6.

This is painful to watch. CC can’t do anything. He has no fastball at all. All his pitches are up and SLOW.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:57 pm
  • The bleeding is ended.

    0-6 after 2. Vomit.

    We could use some offense.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 7:59 pm
  • Feldman isn’t even going to need a shower after this one…

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:04 pm
  • No hitter through 3.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:06 pm
  • 1-2-3 3rd for CC.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:13 pm
  • All of the sudden pitches at the ankles are strikes…when we are up.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:18 pm
  • Carlos breaks up the no-no. 1 out single. 4th inning.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:19 pm
  • Got a hit and a walk. No runs.

    4 innings and no runs.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:29 pm
  • 2 on and no outs to start the 4th…CC needs to sit down and think about this one…

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:33 pm
  • Sweet DP to save CC’s butt. No damage.

I would love to see a run this inning.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:37 pm
  • 5 innings.

    1 HBP, 1 H, 1 BB.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 8:43 pm
  • Bases loaded. 2 outs. Kelly J up.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 9:20 pm
  • Nothing.

    krueg April 1, 2014, 9:22 pm
  • Tough to wake up to that stat-line (nice start CC, bats). But great to see game threads again and krueg back in the house.

I’m living in Cologne, Germany through until August so I won’t be watching most of the games live or commenting with the action as they will mostly start at 1:00am for me. I will of course be checking the smartphone each morning before getting up and, depending on what I see, watching the highlights or the truncated games on mlb.com. Having said that may have to stay up late for the Tanaka debut…

In the meantime, my steadily increasing interest in the NBA over the past 5 years has got me intrigued by the upcoming playoffs.

Jeter just 4 behind A-Rod on the career HBP tally now…

  • Cologne???? I was just there last August! I bought a nice watch there. It’s a cool city but it’s crazy to think it was completely destroyed in WWII.

Missed you too IH! Have fun in the Fatherland! (100% German ancestry)

    krueg April 2, 2014, 10:27 am
  • Also…I can’t wait for the first Yankees game tonight! ;)

    krueg April 2, 2014, 10:27 am
  • I moved here in cologne…aug 14 to be exact. We may have crossed paths without knowing it. Finding it an exceptionally livable and family friendly place. Looking forward to moving though as well…see you on the threads!!

  • I was there on the 13th. Incredible. I was right on the Rhine and downtown. We took a river cruise on Viking. It was awesome but we were the youngest people by far.

    Enjoy IH!
