The Alex Chronicles, Cont.: Yanks-Jays Gamer IIII

The Yanks go for the series split this afternoon against the Jays, and provide enough storylines to keep a Russian novelist busy. Will Alex Rodriguez, who DH’ed yesterday so he’d have a break from his fielding woes, and responded with four strikeout, return to MVP form in the field and at the plate today? Will Sidney Ponson find his own redemption? Will the bottom of the Yankee order (Bernie, Leche, Green, Crosby) produce against newbie Jays starter Shaun Marcum (who?). Will the Yanks put the Jays behind them for good, or will they allow the East to become a 3-team race? Who invented liquid soap and why? So many questions. Put your answers, and any comments, right here.

  • Gameday sez: “Vernon Wells homers (25) on a fly ball to center field. Reed Johnson scores.”
In my head, this is completed by: “Vernon Wells adds 7 points to Devine’s fantasy team…as he has done against the Sox several times this year.”

    Devine July 23, 2006, 1:22 pm
  • That is not funny…really. Vernon addresses Sox pitching this year as “Bit**”

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:25 pm
  • At least A-Rod grounded out in his first AB. Somehow the NY papers will find a way to bitch about it.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:26 pm
  • Can the Sox and Yanks work out some kind of agreement with Selig whereby we don’t have to face Wells?

    YF July 23, 2006, 1:30 pm
  • I hope so. Maybe we should pull something out of the movie “Celtic Pride” and snatch him up.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:34 pm
  • Is Alex still a “true Yankee”? Or has he regressed back to “sort-of legit Yankee”? Can a Yankee fan please enlighten me?

    SF July 23, 2006, 1:40 pm
  • Well after yesterdays 4K performance I think he falls into the bad Yankee from the 80s category.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:41 pm
  • Here comes A-Rod!!

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:53 pm
  • Giambi up before A-Rod. I got excited to early.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 1:54 pm
  • A-Rod K’s!!!!

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:00 pm
  • Alex, Alex, Alex…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 2:01 pm
  • He would have walked had he not swung at a bad pitch.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:01 pm
  • Posada with a 3 run jack to right. Yanks leads 3-2.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:03 pm
  • JORGE!
    Who needs A-Rod?

    YF July 23, 2006, 2:04 pm
  • Let’s see how Wells vs. Ponson works out this time…I’ll predict a groundout.

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:10 pm
  • Ponson’s O-ring quivered on Well’s shot to the wall.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:11 pm
  • Oooof…Gameday shows Wells giving it a ride for the flyout.

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:11 pm
  • Close pitch inside to Melky there. Nice eye.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:11 pm
  • Ohhhh…did Glaus do the honors this time?

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:12 pm
  • Yes Glaus did.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • Wow. Nice arm by Melky though.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • Sorry about that late post on Melky. hit submit on an old window.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • AG…How’s the weather today?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • He killed it.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:14 pm
  • Overbay singles. Is Ponson losing it?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:14 pm
  • Glaus. Easy come, easy go. Looks like we still need ya Alex…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 2:15 pm
  • 106 Friday, 100 yesterday, and headed for 98 today. Coast was much cooler yesterday.. about 71 or so.
Crosby got a horrible read on that single.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:15 pm
  • I was about 70 miles south of Astoria yesterday at the coast to beat the heat.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:16 pm
  • “Is Ponson losing it?”
That assumes he had it to begin with. Torre yanks him after the walk.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:18 pm
  • Ponson is starting to fall apart. He desperately needs a DP ball.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:18 pm
  • Who’s this Wilson fella that’s pitching now?

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:19 pm
  • Maybe he and A-Rod are sharing the same water bottle.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:19 pm
  • First a ball, then a three run home run by Hinske. 7-3 Jays.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:21 pm
  • Christ…this is getting ugly.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:21 pm
  • All I asked of the Yanks this week was to put an a** whoopin on the Jays so we could get back to our normal two team tirades.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:22 pm
  • Wilson was brought up from Columbus. NY got him from KC/Omaha I think.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:22 pm
  • Wilson gives up a base hit on a 2-2 hanging curve.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:23 pm
  • Hill singles to Wilson’s next batter.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:23 pm
  • I think Wilson was found during the search for SF’s Nachos the other night.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:24 pm
  • Michael Kay: “One of these three will be the Yankee’s fifth starter, Ponson, Wilson, Chacon, and out of the three, Chacon’s the best.”
    Shudder.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:25 pm
  • LOL….that is the same feeling I have when I come home and my mother in law is here.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • First and third after another single. Keerap. Chacon gets up in the pen.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • Kris Wilson: rent don’t buy. And don’t even rent.

    YF July 23, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • Wilson is money…three hitters, three hits.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • I get really tired of this verify your comment crap I have to type every so often.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:27 pm
  • And as I typed that last comment it got me again.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:27 pm
  • Reed Johnson hits a 3 run shot over the left field wall.
    This is absolutely sickening.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:27 pm
  • Wow.

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:28 pm
  • Yeah, the verify thing stinks. Especially when you post very quickly.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:28 pm
  • owwwww….owwwww….owwwww

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:28 pm
  • Wilson finally fields a comebacker to record the second out.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:29 pm
  • Torre is drinking in the dugout.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:29 pm
  • As this is happneing, the Yanks still feel that primary need is a bat and not pitching?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:29 pm
  • Crosby drops a ball on the run as Wells doubles to right center. Recorded as a hit.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:30 pm
  • Wells back up again this inning already.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:30 pm
  • It’s only 11:30am where I’m at, but I think I am just about ready to join Joe in that drink.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:31 pm
  • And he walks Glaus. My gods, please stop this.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:33 pm
  • Walks Glaus.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:33 pm
  • This is exactly how I feel when Tito puts the dynamic duo on the mound (The Orc and Meatnez)

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:34 pm
  • One golden issue with this is that Halladay and Burnett are not pitching. So there is some off chance that the Yanks could stage a combeack.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:35 pm
  • After two balls to Overbay, Lyle fouls off two pitches to make it 2-2. The next pitch is outside but mercifully called a strike. the half inning was almost 30 minutes long. I want to wretch.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:36 pm
  • Two 3 run and one 2 run homer’s given up that inning. Probably the uglies inning of pitching I have seen in a long time.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:36 pm
  • Well, at least I can look forward to the Sox/Ms game today, as this is a joke.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:38 pm
  • Wilson…2/3 IP, 5H, 4ER, 1BB and 1 K…ERA is now 9.82.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:38 pm
  • Lester pitching later today. Is this the game where the wheels finally fall off for the kid?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:39 pm
  • AFLAC TRIVIA: Who was the only Blue Jay manager to win Manager of the Year?

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:39 pm
  • Lester’s a home-town favorite in Seattle. Should get a warm welcome from the crowd.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:41 pm
  • I would guess Gaston.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:41 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning for Marcum.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:42 pm
  • That was not the way for the Yanks to at least start a comeback.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:43 pm
  • That’s a good guess.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:43 pm
  • I wonder if it is starting to creep into some of the Yanks minds that they could miss the playoffs. I don’t think that it will happen, but there will be one hell of a blowup/out over that if it did happen.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:44 pm
  • Wilson is still on the mound for NY.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:45 pm
  • Is there any other word on Matsui and Cano?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:45 pm
  • I don’t think at this point in the season it’s in their head’s yet. They’ve been farther behind than this with this much time left. If it looks like this on September 1…
This ump’s strike zone looked consistent at first but is starting to wander.
    Trivia answer: Bobby Cox 1985.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:47 pm
  • It may be in A-Rod’s head.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:48 pm
  • Matsui is in Tampa and should be swinging a bat this week. The only thing I saw on Cano was earlier this week Torre said we wouldn’t see him before the end of this week. Nothing yet, so maybe next week?

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:49 pm
  • Bases are loaded with one out. Wilson is giving Toronto a great BP session today.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:51 pm
  • Torre is leaving Wilson in. This is getting worse.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:52 pm
  • 643 DP ends the inning. That’s more like it.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:53 pm
  • Johnson grounds into a DP thankfully.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • This is just the Yankees giving themselves a challenge. They decided…okay, 9 runs down against Texas…we’ll just make it 7 down against the division rivals.

    Devine July 23, 2006, 2:55 pm
  • ARod hits one to the track. Good play Catalanatto to Rob Arod of a double.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 2:59 pm
  • I feel especially guilty watching this slaughter when I should be doing more productive things. This is simply masochistic.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:00 pm
  • Hill grabs a hard shot from Jorge to end the NY half of the 5th.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:02 pm
  • The Gas House Gorrilla’s are headed back to the plate.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • This sucks.
Note to all: we’ll see if we can disable the verify “feature.” It is annoying. Its there to prevent double-posting, but it”s a pain for these game threads…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • Chacon comes in for the bottom of the fifth. Gets one out, then Vernon Wells hits a shot to left center. Toronto leads 11 to 3.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:08 pm
  • Vernon acts like he is playing T-Ball.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:09 pm
  • So now Toronto has hit home runs off of three different Yankee pitchers. That’s great.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:09 pm
  • This will end up being one of those games that the Yanks are embarressed by and roll off like 6 wins in a row.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:14 pm
  • Melky gets his second hit of the game on a chopper.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:15 pm
  • Testing around with the system here. Hopefully that verification is disabled. Let’s see now….

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:15 pm
  • Testing the disable verification mode.

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • Maybe the Yanks are going to get something going here.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • Grrrrr. Please stand by on this…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • That’s a pleasing speculation, Rob. Hope it’s true. NY goes to Texas tomorrow and Johnson faces Millwood. Should be a tough game.
Melky scores as Nick Green hits an RBI double to the wall in right center.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:17 pm
  • YF…the only thing now is you cannot remained signed in. You have to put your name and email address and click on remeber personal info.
You probably have noticed this already.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:17 pm
  • Accordo is pitching. This is the guy they got for Hillecancer.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:18 pm
  • Green scores on a single by Crosby. Marcum is probably getting tired. It’s now 11-5. Normally, I would be highly please with this much offense through six innings. Normally.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:18 pm
  • Oops. Thanks for the correction. I am running upstairs at the commercial breaks fixing my bathroom plumbing.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:19 pm
  • Crosby singles in Green

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:22 pm
  • Jeter and Crosby both safe on an infield single.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:23 pm
  • Giambi flies out to end the inning.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • Sign in option is back.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • Should be returning to normal now. Request in to tech support regarding the verification problem. Try to have it set up in the next day…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:27 pm
  • Yanks pulling a Landis here?
    Not likely…..

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:28 pm
  • It is pretty unlikely today with the waay the Jays are hitting.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:34 pm
  • A-Rod with the ground out, And then the DP. Not a good day for the Yanks. Or Alex.

    YF July 23, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • 12-5 Toronto as Reed Johnson gets an rbi double.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:46 pm
  • Reed tags and advances to third on the high pop out to right from Catalanatto.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:48 pm
  • Wells falls behind 0-2 on a couple of breaking pitches, then flies out to center as Johnson scores on the tag. 13-5 Jays.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:49 pm
  • Wells gets another RBI with a sac fly.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:52 pm
  • Came back late…sorry about the double post. Hadn’t hit refresh.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:53 pm
  • Rob, did you check in with your mom in Astoria? It mellowed out quite a bit there yesterday. Should be 100 degrees by three here in Portland, but Astoria, (only 80 miles away for those who don’t know) should be a comfy 71 today.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:57 pm
  • It was bizarre yesterday. Leaving the coast, it was 71. 20 miles away, it was 89. 35 miles away it was 99. Weird stuff.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 3:58 pm
  • She doesn;t live in Astoria anymore. She moved up to Sequim Washington (across from Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula) a few years ago. The weather up there has been unbearable for them. My Sister still lives in Astoria and it has cooled down quite abot.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:58 pm
  • Where on the coast did you go?

    Rob July 23, 2006, 3:59 pm
  • Being here in NC the hot weather does not bother me.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 4:00 pm
  • I was in Ocean City, which is near Tillamook.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • No Sox game thread yet?

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • 13 runs will happen from time to time, especially with the shaky three-headed monster that is Ponson/Wilson/Chacon.
However, I’m a little peeved about only 5 runs on 13 hits. Throw this game in a deep dark hole and bury it.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 4:21 pm
  • Familiar with the area, no, there is no gamethread yet.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 4:21 pm
  • Beltre ripped that one. Surprised they didn’t throw home there.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 4:23 pm
  • Sox getting smacked around a little.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 4:30 pm
  • Must be a trend with the Sox and Yanks today.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 4:32 pm
  • Can we get a sox game thread?

    TJ July 23, 2006, 5:17 pm
  • I guess not today.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 5:23 pm
  • The Red Sox bats are too potent for Seattle to think a 5-4 lead will be sufficient today.

    attackgerbil July 23, 2006, 5:49 pm
  • Agreed, Seattle definately needs to score more runs if they plan on feeling safe. No game thread sucks.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 5:53 pm
  • Mateo blows the lead for Washburn.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 6:05 pm
  • If anyone looking on this thread cares at all about the Sox heres a run down of how the ’06 draftees are doing thus far
    http://travisjliles.com/redsox.aspx

    TJ July 23, 2006, 6:06 pm
  • Ortiz at the plate, 1 down, man on 1st and 2nd.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 6:06 pm
  • Check out Soxprospects.com That is another good web page to look at. The information looked a little old, however it rates the prospects we did have prior to the draft.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 6:07 pm
  • ortiz w/the “run scoring play” !

    z118 July 23, 2006, 6:08 pm
  • good lord, game day is SLOW.

    z118 July 23, 2006, 6:09 pm
  • Sorry about the lack of Sox thread today, guys. Not sure what happened to our SFs. I’ve posted one now, though, better late than never. Feel free to migrate their if you feel so moved….
    Apologies……

    YF July 23, 2006, 6:09 pm
  • No problem…I will send my friend “Vinnie” to see them.

    Rob July 23, 2006, 6:10 pm
