The Lamest Duck

AP reports that the Mets have fired Art Howe, except that he’s not fired until, um, October. So he can finish the season.

How any of the parties involved think this is a good idea is well beyond our comprehension, though we are happy to note that the Mets top prospect beat the Sox the other night—pitching for Tampa. Lets Go Mets!

  • What a joke. That Howe doesn’t quit immediately indicates one of two things: the guy’s a tremendously loyal and good company man, or a peon who wouldn’t recognize emasculation and dishonor if it smacked him in the head with a Louisville Slugger. I’ll wager on the latter – is it any wonder why he was able to manage in the Athletics’ organization?

  • I think the reasonable conclusion is that it’s the Mets management who are the gutless ones here. The implication seems to be that the Mets don’t want to pay his salary through the end of the year, plus the salary of an interim manager, so they’re holding money over his head.

  • No question, the Wilpons ought to be ashamed. The Mets are a total joke, from their activities at the trade deadline to today’s news, they reveal themselves as the amateurs in town (trades for Loaiza notwithstanding). I guess it makes more sense for Howe to stick it out until they axe him, thus drawing the paycheck for the rest of his contract. But still, there is something about self-respect, right?

  • Hey, I’d go with the paycheck. I doubt you’ll see Howe managing another club- then again Garner got another job this year. Might as well make out like a bandit while he can!

  • You’ll see Howe manage again but he’ll have to go down a rung, to the Brewers or Expos of the world.
