The Makings of Disaster: Sox-Angels Gamer II

We interrupt your MVP discussions — and my post was really just meant to be funny; I wasn’t trying to start anything, I swear! — to bring you the Sox and Angels in progress, Beckett v. Weaver in a battle of pitchers who could dominate their respective divisions each for the next 10 years.

It’s 2-1 Angels as neither pitcher has been especially great in the first inning. Comments!

  • Not so disastrous after the Sox scored to make it 2-1, but still… Beckett breezes through the second…

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 1:56 pm
  • Do SFs get the priviledge of having their ears assaulted by Buck and McCarver today?

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 2:01 pm
  • Jerry Remy’s on FOX? What sweet bliss have I turned on my television?

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 2:02 pm
  • Heh.
I have trouble taking seriously anyone who shares his genes with Jeff Weaver. Thus, do not despair, Sox fans!

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 2:04 pm
  • The one thing to watch out for with Jer. Weaver is that he seems to be as good as his brother was the first two years he was in MLB. That’s not good for any team that faces him. The question will be as hitters adjust will he be able to was well, unlike his brother.

    walein July 29, 2006, 2:17 pm
  • Paul – I think what you say about Beckett is a stretch. He’s good, yes, but he’s never dominated over the full course of a season, let alone 10. If i had to pick one candidate to dominate the AL East for the next decade, I’d go with the Doc. And Erik Bedard’s pretty good, too…
YM – in NYC Fox is showing Mets/Braves. I really wish they wouldn’t do this regionalization nonsense. Any Mets in NY fan can watch the Mets whenever he wants. Surely the network TV game should feature teams we don’t see so often.

  • FOX thinks I would rather see Inspector Gadget rather than baseball.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 2:35 pm
  • Walein: the real test of how good Weaver Jr. really is is today. He’s 7-0, but it was against the likes of KC and Tampa…if he can beat a team like Boston, then they’ve really got something.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 2:40 pm
  • I”ve got a fantasy rooting interest in Weaver right now. ;) That being said, he did beat Cleveland and Baltimore and the mighty Mariners!

    walein July 29, 2006, 2:51 pm
  • Let’s go Angels!

    walein July 29, 2006, 2:53 pm
  • Yes!! Speedy-Chone-zales

    bloodyank78 July 29, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • All this without a hit.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 2:56 pm
  • What happened to Vlad?

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • Well, it looks like The dodgers are getting Betemit.

    walein July 29, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • I”m not sure….there seems to have been a pinch hitter…which is not good since he too is on my fantasy team.

    walein July 29, 2006, 2:59 pm
  • Poll: Who makes you want to stick sharp things in your ears more: Tim McCarver or Lou Piniella?

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 3:05 pm
  • Tie game.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:11 pm
  • You haven’t suffered until you’ve endured Chip Caray.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Bill; I emailed you my father-in-law’s recommendations. I hope they help.

    bloodyank78 July 29, 2006, 3:14 pm
  • Got ‘em, BY. thanks a bunch.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:17 pm
  • FOX announcers = crazy. “Jose Reyes is an MVP candidate.”

    Anonymous July 29, 2006, 3:18 pm
  • Big test for the Sox bullpen, Tito is pulling Beckett it seems, probably does not want his pitch count going any higher than the 100 + it already is.

    bloodyank78 July 29, 2006, 3:31 pm
  • Figgins has to be one of the scrappiest players in the Majors. He annoys the living hell out of me when the Halos play the Yanks.

    bloodyank78 July 29, 2006, 3:35 pm
  • This from Joe C.: Pride’s last homer was in 2003 with the Yanks.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:41 pm
  • His only hit for the Yankees (1-12), against … the Red Sox.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • From a town known as Oyster Bay Long Island,
Rode a boy with the game in his hand,
And his daring pitch to Pride,
in the stands it finally died
on flowed tears in Red Sock land.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • Apologies to Billy Joel

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 3:43 pm
  • Hansen looked like someone just pissed in his gatorade after that shot.

    bloodyank78 July 29, 2006, 3:45 pm
  • Since the Red Sox winning streak ended at 12 on June 30, they are 13-13. In case you were wondering.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 3:47 pm
  • I was thinking the Sox had played suspiciously like a .500 team since the return to AL play…
    And don’t forget that includes a five-game winning streak…

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:03 pm
  • Ortiz doing his part to keep the Sox alive with a shot to deep center.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • Followed up by a single from Manny. Trot’s the tying run, and he is at the plate.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:14 pm
  • If Hansen and Timlin could have held it together, this would be a much better game. Second game in a row our bullpen has let us down… That bodes ill.

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • And another single by Boston as Nixon pushes Manny over to second. Still no outs.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • Tek is now the go-ahead run as Trot singles… No outs in the inning.

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:16 pm
  • Tek trying to bunt??? I know he’s hitting poorly, but he’s got a double today and still has decent power…

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:17 pm
  • Now the runners advance on a wild pitch…

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:20 pm
  • I guess with no outs they figured the best bet was the sacrifice.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:20 pm
  • Now would be a great time for a Mike Lowell trademark double.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:22 pm
  • C’mon MikeMike, tie it with one of your patented down-the-line swings!

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:22 pm
  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 4:26 pm
  • We need you here Gonzo!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 4:27 pm
  • I call sooth on the Lowell double, although that’s the dinkiest double you’ll ever see… Still, a double is a double, and a tie game is a tie game :-D

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:31 pm
  • Papelbon for the ninth, as it should be… Clearly our pen has not been so hot the last few games… We need him for at least two innings… Maybe three, if we can’t score in a bottom half somewhere…

    Paul SF July 29, 2006, 4:32 pm
  • Just got here and it looks like we are trying to overcome bullpen let downs.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:36 pm
  • the rays look like they cam to play today. They are up 3-2 on the Yanks.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:37 pm

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:45 pm

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:46 pm

  • 1st Pitch by Trot. WHY IS EVRYONE SWINGING AT THE FIRST DAMN PITCH!!!

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:58 pm
  • Oh, boy. Three outs recorded on the last two pitches. What happened to working the count?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 4:59 pm
  • Troup went into the home run call on Trot’s flyout.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 4:59 pm
  • Tek goes down on three pitches.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:00 pm

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:00 pm

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 5:00 pm

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 5:01 pm
  • I don’t think so.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:02 pm
  • Tavares. Shit.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 5:03 pm
  • This is getting frustrating.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:03 pm

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:08 pm
  • Yes he is YM.
The only double spy in the rivalry…..
    Ramiro Mendoza

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:09 pm
  • What is happening…there is a long delay on Gamecast and Gameday.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:10 pm
  • Rob. Close the radio then start it again. It will catch up a bit.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 5:12 pm
  • If Julian Tavarez turned out to be a serial killer that would be such a cliche. What a mug on that guy!

    Nick-YF July 29, 2006, 5:12 pm
  • Manny’s D and Tavares kill the rally!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 29, 2006, 5:13 pm

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:27 pm
  • Papi with a single to left in the bottom of the 11th scores AGon from 2nd base.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:28 pm
  • Seems like those MVP debates over the past couple of days seem kind of pointless to Ortiz himself, who just keeps going out and winning games for Boston. Props, Papi.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:04 pm
  • Responding to comments earlier in the game… There is no play-by-play announcer in MLB more irritating and pompous than Tim McCarver.

    Hudson July 29, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • Hudson: seconded.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:20 pm
  • Paul: earlier in the thread, you called sooth on the double from Lowell. I call broken reverse sooth – beat you to the post by a nose. ;)

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Bah, curse you, AG!
