Last night, before the rains came, the Yanks may have found their 5th starter, Sidney Ponson, who settled down after a difficult first inning. After falling behind, the Yanks staged an ump-aided rally in the ninth off J.J. Putz (who insists it’s pronounced “puts,”—as in “he puts on his pants one leg at a time”—though we know better) before Leche came through with the laser-like walk-off to right. Hoorah. With the win, the Yanks are 9-1 over their last 10, and remain tied in the loss column with the Sox. Meanwhile, the recently swept ChiSox, are busily taking down Detroit. Will the Tigers burn out like Floyd Landis on the Alpe de Huez? We’re not convinced they’re a playoff team, and even if they are, we’d rather see them on the schedule than, say, either of the Sox or the Angels (watch out for those Halos!) or the Twinkies with their tandem aces. Anyway, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. This afternoon the Yanks look for the sweep of Ichiro and his Mariners. Gil Meche on the hill for the visitors. The Big Unit goes for the Yanks. Roll on.
