The Melky Way: M’s-Yanks Gamer III

Last night, before the rains came, the Yanks may have found their 5th starter, Sidney Ponson, who settled down after a difficult first inning. After falling behind, the Yanks staged an ump-aided rally in the ninth off J.J. Putz (who insists it’s pronounced “puts,”—as in “he puts on his pants one leg at a time”—though we know better) before Leche came through with the laser-like walk-off to right. Hoorah. With the win, the Yanks are 9-1 over their last 10, and remain tied in the loss column with the Sox. Meanwhile, the recently swept ChiSox, are busily taking down Detroit. Will the Tigers burn out like Floyd Landis on the Alpe de Huez? We’re not convinced they’re a playoff team, and even if they are, we’d rather see them on the schedule than, say, either of the Sox or the Angels (watch out for those Halos!) or the Twinkies with their tandem aces. Anyway, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. This afternoon the Yanks look for the sweep of Ichiro and his Mariners. Gil Meche on the hill for the visitors. The Big Unit goes for the Yanks. Roll on. Comment here.

  • Melky > Slappy?
The boo birds sure were cawing last night…

    Mayday Malone July 19, 2006, 12:30 pm
  • Gil “Ga” Meche. What a name!

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 12:33 pm
  • Well this sure isn’t off on the right foot. Ichiro scores on the Beltre double.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:11 pm
  • And the Yanks get a bit of help on the strike ’em out, throw ’em out.
That’s Stinnett behind the plate, in place of Jorge, who got dinged on the thumb in the 10th last night.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:14 pm
  • Is that why Jorge’s resting?

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 1:16 pm
  • Yup.
Damon Ks. Leche gets a nice hand for last night’s theatrics.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:17 pm
  • Melky down 1, 2, 3. Here’s Jetes. Big hand for the Captain.
    He goes down 6-3.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:19 pm
  • I’m not too confident in the offense given how tired these guys must be. Also, Meche has been very good of late.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 1:22 pm
  • Slip of the tounge! Michael Kay just referred to the Yankee’s new starter, Cindy Ponson.
I think we have a nickname!
    Sexson Ks.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:22 pm
  • Yankee/Unit killer Eduardo Perez grounds easily to Alex, 5-3.
On comes the euphonious Yunieski Betancourt. Best name in baseball?
He pops to Nick Green at 2nd.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:24 pm
  • Meche is tough Nick. And Putz is good behind him. Gonna have to steal a few runs here, cause it ain’t likely to get any easier tomorrow in Toronto against Hallladay.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:25 pm
  • Best name in baseball. Actually, the M’s have a lot of good names.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 1:26 pm
  • Giambi Ks after a solid ab. Meche really dealing.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:30 pm
  • Alex lines out to center. Looked like he just missed putting that very, very deep. Look out next ab.
Philips first pitch swinging. Out 5-3.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:31 pm
  • Rivera Ks.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:35 pm
  • Jones Ks.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:37 pm
  • Randy looks to be settling down.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 1:37 pm
  • Ichiro yanks one right up the middle for a single.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:39 pm
  • Ichiro steals 2nd. Not even a throw. Coulda walked in there. Ichiro now 30 of 32 on the pads. So a single = a double.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:41 pm
  • No double for Beltre this time. Ks on a pitch at eye level, and outside. Ichiro stranded. Randy Ks the side.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:42 pm
  • Guiel flies deep to center.
Green loops one to right. Ichiro gets to it.
Seattle outfielders can cover some serious ground.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:46 pm
  • Stinnett Ks on the check swing. Meche perfect through 3, but don’t be expecting a perfecto.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:48 pm
  • Sexson dinger. 2-0.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:54 pm
  • Wheels comin’ off here. Betancourt singles. Two on.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:55 pm
  • Alright. Out of it with minimal damage. But time to start putting some crooked numbers on the board. Enough of this no-hit crap.

    YF July 19, 2006, 1:57 pm
  • Cripes! Web gem from Betancourt robs Johnny D. Fantastic running play in the outfield. No-no alive, but for how long?!

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:03 pm
  • Leche pops to Betancourt on the 3-2 change high and over the strike zone.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:04 pm
  • Jetes overmatched. Way out in front twice. Throws his bat to the M’s dugout.
    Not good!
    Meche pefect thru 4.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:06 pm
  • And the Unit answers with his own perfect inning. Back to offense. A hit please? Would it kill someone to get a hit? Jason? Alex?? Pllllllleeeeeeeaaaaaaasssssse.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • Giambi with an easy grounder down the first base line, out 3-1.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:15 pm
  • sooth: A-Rod breaks the no-hitter.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:16 pm
  • Blooper! Cheep double into the stands along the right field line. Ichiro can’t make it over.
    Man on 2nd!

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:17 pm
  • I’m not taken credit for that, though. I thought Alex might clobber one. That was a safety swing, and a lucky hit if ever there was one.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:18 pm
  • Brilliant 3-2 looping slider freezes Phillips. Stands there and watches strike 3.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:21 pm
  • Meche has them off-balance today. Doesn’t he? Another k. This time Andy goes down.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:22 pm
  • Guiel lofts one to center. Alex breaks up the perfect with a cheap-o blooper. Let’s hope we get a few more hits so Mr. Meche, who’s been nothing short of brilliant, doesn’t go to bed with the worst case of regrets/frustration since Mike Mussina faced that guy who doesn’t believe in dinosaurs (and shall otherwise remain nameless).

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • Lopez lead off single through the hole on the left side. Dribbler found the space between Derek and Alex. Grrr

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:28 pm
  • Lopez toasted on the base paths by Stinnett, who just misses the Unit on the throw.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:32 pm
  • The bottom of the line-up starts a potential rally off. Who woulda thunk it?!

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:41 pm
  • Ugh. After 34 pitches Damon flies to shallow left. Come on Leche!

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:46 pm
  • ACK! Melky first-pitch swinging, flies to even shallower left, caught by Bettancourt.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:47 pm
  • Jeter looking lost against Meche.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:49 pm
  • Jeter does it again! After looking all but lost against the off speed stuff, Jetes hammers an inside fastball to right. Bad pitch selection, perhaps for the first time today for Meche.

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:52 pm
  • Captain Clutch! The single scores Nick.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:52 pm
  • anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? Kelly Stinnett should try to steal home.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:53 pm
  • And the Captain steals 2nd. MVP!

    YF July 19, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • You know, the Jeter MVP talk isn’t too crazy. This is his best year since his MVP-deserving 1999 campaign.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:56 pm
  • Full count. Giambi scrubs it up.

    walein July 19, 2006, 2:56 pm
  • the good news is that was likely Meche’s last inning. Over 100 pitches through 6.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 2:59 pm
  • The bad news is that Rafael Soriano should be coming in.

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • Derek’s throwing error ends the chance at a 1-2-3 inning.

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:05 pm
  • Well that wasn’t very MVPish. Muffs an easy throw for error 9. But no damage; he makes up for it with a 6-4fc.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • a well-pitched game by the Unit. Can’t complain.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:07 pm
  • 105 pitches for Randy…he pitched well, doubt we’ll see him in the 8th.
Let’s get some hitting together here Yanks!

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:08 pm
  • Scoreboard watching: Sox up 1-0 on KC in Beantown.
Low scoring day. Need to put an end to that here.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:08 pm
  • Somebody watching the game said RJ was limping/walking gingerly, can anyone watching confirm/deny?

    Bozo July 19, 2006, 3:10 pm
  • Single for Alex to lead off the 7th, with an assist to Meche, who’s stayin’ in for the long haul. (Hargrove?! Hello!)

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Didn’t look like anything serious.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:13 pm
  • Hardgrove has to be one of the 3 worst managers in baseball.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:13 pm
  • But that is serious. Alex scores on the double by Philips, who advances to third wle Rivera argues at home. Phillips sent back to 2nd, but why is not clear. No reason the play was dead.
Alex definitely looked safe. No beef.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:15 pm
  • So they leave Meche in, after pitching voer 100 and throwing a bad 6th inning. Andy Phillips make them pay!

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:17 pm
  • Bowa went crazy when he saw the third base ump had, for unknown reasons, called the play dead before the home plate ump. Bad decision by the ump.
Bowa’s tantrum is at least amusing. Stamps his feet like my 5 month old daughter. Phillips, incensed, puts his hands on his helmet and then raises them to the sky—what are you doing!
Meanwhile, Meche leaves with the game tied after a brilliant outing. Hargrove a day late and a dollar short.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:18 pm
  • a-rod looked out to me….but i didn’t see the play.

    sf rod July 19, 2006, 3:19 pm
  • Why Cairo instead of Bernie as the PH?

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:20 pm
  • sf rod, very good, LMAO :)

    Bozo July 19, 2006, 3:20 pm
  • Cairo pefect sac bunt puts AP on 3rd w/ 1 out. Here comes Mike Lowe.
Alex’s leg appeared to be in. He beat the throw. Ump was in perfect position on the call.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:21 pm
  • oh I see. Never mind.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:22 pm
  • Why waist Bernie if it’s just to bunt, which is not a Bernie skill…..

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:22 pm
  • Williams in now. Jorge on deck!

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:23 pm
  • I was confused about how many outs there were. Thought there was 1 already.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:23 pm
  • Crowd chants “Let’s Go Bernie” as the count runs to 0-2.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:24 pm
  • Bernie Ks on inside heat.
Jorge goes back to the bench. It was a fake! Made Lowe pitch to Bernie instead of walking him to reach Stinnett, who flies out to Ichiro. Inning over. Grr.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:25 pm
  • He strikes out.

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • Stinnett flies out. No win for Randy.

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • Randy’s back in for the 8th. Joe tries to squeeze 1 more batter (inning?) out of him.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:29 pm
  • Randy must have said “I’m gonna pitch 8” to Gator.
Gator: Randy’s ok to pitch 8.
    Joe: Ok.

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:30 pm
  • Oy. Ichiro legs out a nubber to lead off the 8th. Watch out for the stolen base….

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:30 pm
  • How does ichiro “single to catcher”?

    walein July 19, 2006, 3:30 pm
  • don’t have a good feeling about this

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:30 pm
  • Beltre swings at a ball way up and out of the zone. Man is he a chaser.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:34 pm
  • Unit really going deep here. This may come back to haunt next start out. Hope not.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:35 pm
  • Ack. Ichiro steals second, and Stinnett throws one right in the dirt that skips past Cairo at 2nd. Ichiro to 3rd. Lopez HBP.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:38 pm
  • Looks like the Yankee bullpen phone is broken. Someone call Carrot Top!
Hope that’s not why RJ is still in.
Sac fly scores Ichiro, who manufactured this run by himself.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • with the help of Kelly Stinnett

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • RJ still in after 123 pitches. ACK!!!!

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:43 pm
  • Does Joe think Randy’s Scott Proctor?

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:43 pm
  • Sexson Ks! Great outing for the Unit. 11 ks.
Hard to complain too much about that last run. Ichiro scores on a nubber to the catcher, a stolen base/error, and a sac fly.
    Get it back!

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:46 pm
  • Good job by Randy.
The top of the order comes up. Let’s do it again!

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:48 pm
  • One of the best relievers comes in. Rafael Soriano is good.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:49 pm
  • Damon pops out to short. 1 away.

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 3:51 pm
  • Melky on after Betancourt boots the grounder up the middle!

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:53 pm
  • Mariners are trying really hard to screw this one up…

    Paul SF July 19, 2006, 3:53 pm
  • Um…what’s a nubber?

    Sam July 19, 2006, 3:55 pm
  • Sam, never heard of a nubber? Little tapper off the end of the bat, usually dies halfway through the infield?
    Syn: squibbler, tapper, swinging bunt.

    Paul SF July 19, 2006, 3:56 pm
  • Jeter grounds to short, Melky breaks up any chance of a DP, this after Soriano was treating Melky like Rickey Henderson out there. Blame Hargrove. He always finds a way to slow things down for no reason.

    YF July 19, 2006, 3:58 pm
  • Ah. Thanks, Paul. Some words are still new to my Limey ears, even after all these years…

    Sam July 19, 2006, 4:00 pm
  • Giambi whiffs on the fastball outside. Jeter stranded.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:01 pm
  • Oh, that’s right, Sam. Forgot you weren’t from ’round these parts ;-) Happy to help…

    Paul SF July 19, 2006, 4:01 pm
  • Giambi’s really cooled off — down to .256. Ouch.

    Paul SF July 19, 2006, 4:03 pm
  • Farns in.Alex with the nice play to kick things off. Then Betancourt slaps one past Jeter up the middle.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:06 pm
  • And now the easy 6-4-2 DP.
Giambi has “cooled off” a bit with the ba, but he’s still getting on base and putting the ball out of the park with regularity.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:07 pm
  • Right then. Time for A-Rod to work his way back into the boo-boys “affections”.

    Sam July 19, 2006, 4:08 pm
  • Last licks. Here we go. Alex to the plate. Clutch time!

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:08 pm
  • Had a pitch to hit at 0-2. Fouled back. Damn.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:10 pm
  • Grounds out.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • Ouch.

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • gameday just showed “automatic ball”. WTF?

    sf rod July 19, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • AP flies out.
Down to Cairo. Cairo? Cairo. Oy.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:14 pm
  • Oooo. Miggy had a pitch on 1-2. Pulled foul.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • Down to Cairo!

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • I guess Jorge’s hand is doing badly

    Nick-YF July 19, 2006, 4:16 pm
  • Would have been better off with Posada rolling the ball to second.

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:17 pm
  • Miggy beats out the dribbler to third. Nice play by Beltre, but the throw not in time!

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:17 pm
  • Cairo puts the single down on Putz!

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:17 pm
  • Can we get a little Bernie magic?

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:18 pm
  • Cue the sad classical guitar soundtrack.

    walein July 19, 2006, 4:19 pm
  • NOOOO! Bernie drills a liner to straightaway center to end it. Fifteen feet either way and it’s a tie game with a man on 2nd. Oh well. Can’t win ’em all. (Though it’d be nice.) Credit to Meche and Johnson, for a pair of fine outings, and to Ichiro, for winning the game by sheer force of his own will.

    YF July 19, 2006, 4:20 pm

    SF July 19, 2006, 4:21 pm
  • Bad SF! Gloating is so uncool, especially after two 1-0 wins against the worst team in the AL.
Unit was kept in too long today.

    Sam July 19, 2006, 4:25 pm
  • Hey SFs, if only you could play the Royals every day ;-) Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Good game all around today. Yeah, you can’t win ’em all, but I’d rather lose like this….Randy was awesome, and I don’t think he was left in too long. Ichiro’s just a freak of nature, that’s all. Sucks that Johnson had to take the loss, but give an assist to Stinnett for throwing that pickoff into CF for an error. On the plus side: RJ’s been pitching very well the last 4-5 starts, Farnsinator was solid, and the ‘pen will be fresh for Toronto. Even A-Rod should be pretty happy after this game: a couple of hits, a few nice fielding plays hopefully takes that monkey off his back.
Moose vs. Halladay tomorrow, should be a dandy!

    yankeemonkey July 19, 2006, 4:43 pm
  • (And shouldn’t the Sox be worried they could only muster 2 runs in 2 games against the frickin’ Royals? Just saying….)

    yankeemonkey July 19, 2006, 4:44 pm
  • Already worried about that, YM. Right now, though, just basking in 18 innings of five-hit, shutout baseball — complete with 9.2 consecutive no-hittings.

    Paul SF July 19, 2006, 5:03 pm
