The Power of Depth: Sox-Rangers Gamer

If you wake up and David Ortiz needs a day off (I knew that one-day All-Star break would come back on him), and Mike Lowell is vomiting, you’re prepared for a sorry, sorry lineup in support of Curt Schilling in today’s makeup game vs. the Rangers.

You’d be wrong:

1. Coco Crisp, CF
2. Mark Loretta, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Jason Varitek, C
6. Wily Mo Pena, DH
7. Gabe Kapler, RF
8. Alex Gonzalez, SS
9. Alex Cora, 3B

P — Curt Schilling.

Pretty remarkable to have the depth to lose two of your best hitters, and replace them with guys hitting .300. The prospect of a Pena/Kapler/Gonzo/Cora bottom half is not nearly as scary as it would have been in August. Gonzo has the lowest BA of any of them — and he’s at about .280! Meanwhile, Curt looks to tie Josh Beckett (and Roy Halladay) for the AL lead in wins.

With our lineup today, we’re going to need about 8 more innings like this…

  • From the putting-on-your-cleats-can-be-hazardous-to-your-back department: Tim Wakefield has a broken rib:

“Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has a broken rib and is expected to spend at least three weeks on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona said Thursday.
Francona said Wakefield doesn’t remember how he injured himself. It might have been from sleeping on it wrong.”

  • Cap’n sacrifice RBI, Manny to 3rd

Ok- I’m going to get fired if I keep this up. You’re on your own (once you wake up, that is)

    Mayday Malone July 20, 2006, 2:29 pm
  • Schilling coughed up that lead fast:
Groundout, single, groundout, single, RBI double, 2-run single, 3-2 Texas.
    Yuck.

  • I think we’re learning why bloggers don’t make for good baseball players. Perhaps, Schill should have been preparing for the game instead of shooting the shit with us.

    Nick-YF July 20, 2006, 2:41 pm
  • lol, Nick. I think the two days of silence on the Internet (yesterday and today) provides more than enough time to prepare, especially when you look at the times of his posts…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 2:44 pm
  • Gonzo with the infield single. Seems he’s on base every game. It’s a great presence to have in the bottom of the lineup…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 2:48 pm
  • Coco grounds out to end the inning. Big bats coming up… I’d like to get a big lead early, so my workplace productivity will return to normal levels…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 2:51 pm
  • Kinsler singles. Curt better get his stuff together — fast…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 2:52 pm
  • Gah! A single from Young… Not good…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • Schilling gives up 2 hits, gets 3 consecutive outs. M-Lor up…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:01 pm
  • Curt is getting ahead of all the hitters. They are just hitting his 0-1, 0-2 pitches.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:02 pm
  • Schill was almost decapitated by a hotshot by DeRosa, Schill put his glove up and saved his own ass

    bloodyank78 July 20, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • Youk walks!

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:04 pm
  • M-Lor thrown out at home on Manny’s single. Would love to be watching TV right now and see how that happened. No outs and the bases loaded? Seems you play that conservatively…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • Loretta just gunned down

    bloodyank78 July 20, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • Manny singles, Loretta thrown out at home.. what happened I’m gamecasting

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • Why is Varitek swinging at 3-0s.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:07 pm
  • 3B coach waived Loretta home but DeRosa’s throw was real accurate; right to Barajas to tag in time

    bloodyank78 July 20, 2006, 3:07 pm
  • Loretta didn’t slide…again, this time it can’t be Manny’s fault. Maybe people should stop blaming him for everything and look at the guy getting thrown out.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:09 pm
  • YES Wily Mo!!!!

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:10 pm
  • I’m getting Gamecasted, I think…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:11 pm
  • wily mo with the double, 4-3

    T-sf July 20, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Wily Mo double, brings in Youk & Manny, sox lead 4-3.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Wily Mo’s triumphant return! Double makes it 4-3 Sawx!
    Now, hold the lead, Curt…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:13 pm
  • Alright Schill, when you get ahead, throw pitches to get them to swing and miss, not slap singles around.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:13 pm
  • 2 quick outs.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:15 pm
  • 1-2-3. Just what we needed…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • 1-2-3 inning, lets keep the offense rolling, with the deadly AGon, Cora, Crisp coming up.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • I think we are going to start realizing how important Wily Mo is to this team down the stretch. Even though it would be nice to have Arroyo right now…who just pitched against the Mets 8IP 6 H 2ER 0BB 8K….

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:18 pm
  • Cora doubles…to third on a passed ball.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:22 pm
  • Rheinecker out after 3.2 IP Not bad for the team that scored 2 runs in 2 games against KC.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • The Texas pitcher looks like Henry Fool. Anyone? Anyone?

    Nick-YF July 20, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • 3 ground outs end the inning

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:27 pm
  • Gotta score the runner from third with one out. Just got to…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:27 pm
  • Two very quick outs for Schilling…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:30 pm
  • Infield single and a walk. Stop it. Just stop it…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:33 pm
  • And Schilling says: “OK.” And strikes out Blalock on three pitches…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:36 pm
  • Lets see if the Youk, Manny, Pena trio can connect for some more runs

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:37 pm
  • Back to the old Youk: 1 for 1 with two walks so far…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:39 pm
  • Youk ‘The Greek God of Walks’…walks

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:39 pm
  • Manny on pace for 140 Ks. Second most of his career.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:43 pm
  • Just want to point out, in Wily Mo’s picture for his player profile, his neck is actually bigger than his head. That just isn’t right.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:45 pm
  • Wily Mo and his mammoth neck walk to first

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 3:46 pm
  • I, of course, walked in right in time to see Schill blow the lead. It was nice to see them rally a bit though. And nice to know that we are capable of scoring more than one run in a game.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 3:53 pm
  • Unfortunately, he and Youk are stranded… Now Curt’s going to have do some stranding of his own, as Kevin Mench delivers a one-out single, Texas’ ninth hit thus far…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:54 pm
  • Full count to Wilkerson.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 3:56 pm
  • Yay! Wilerson k’s. 2 down.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 3:57 pm
  • Shit.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 3:58 pm
  • Barajas with the double. Mench scores all the way from first.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 3:59 pm
  • One strike away from ending the inning, Curt gives up the RBI double. Crap.

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 3:59 pm
  • Schilling ahead yet again gives up an RBI base hit. Come on Schill.

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:01 pm
  • It’s frustrating for us; I’m sure it’s frustrating for Schilling. Time to rally yet again…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:04 pm
  • Schill is at 94 pitches through 6. We could really use another full inning from him.
Oh, and they better win today, if only for the fact that it’s my birthday. :)

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:04 pm
  • OBP machine Alex Gonzalez draws the walk…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:05 pm
  • Happy bday, Laura! How old, if you don’t mind my asking?

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:07 pm
  • 16, Paul. My big present was to go to Fenway last week (first time!), but my parents got me this really fat, cool book on the history of uniforms. My mom picked it out all by herself. I don’t need a lot. All I need is baseball. :)
Yay! Lo with the hit to score AGon!

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:10 pm
  • M-Lor! RBI single. Clutch! And 3 for 4 today… The Rangers are proving a soothing balm for the Sox offense…
Aww, sweet 16. Well happy birthday again.

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:12 pm
  • Well, actually I need books too, in particular epic fantasy, but hey, that wouldn’t have looked so good in the comment.
    Lo picked off second. Ugh.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:12 pm
  • Ahhhhhh, dude! Loretta, WTF? Thanks for the RBI and all, but off 2nd by the CATCHER?

    Devine July 20, 2006, 4:12 pm
  • Wow, how did that happen? By the catcher?? Sheesh… Did he breakn his leg rounding the bag?

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:13 pm
  • Lo was just WAY off the bag.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:15 pm
  • Yeah, strikes out Kinsler!

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:16 pm
  • Hey Laura,
It’s my dad’s birthday too. He’s not a Sox fan, though. (He doesn’t follow sports at all, really.)
    Happy birthday!

    Devine July 20, 2006, 4:18 pm
  • Texiera k’s. Nice 1-2-3 inning from Schill.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:20 pm
  • Not that I’m acknowledging the potential necessity of this, but Detroit beat the White Sox again, putting the Red Sox just a half-game behind them in the wild card race…
Schilling Ks Teixiera to end the seventh! I think we’ll be seeing Timlinbon or possibly Timcarmen — or maybe Hanlin.

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:21 pm
  • I like the name combo machine there, Paul.

    Devine July 20, 2006, 4:26 pm
  • Manny draws the leadoff walk. Let’s get some insurance!

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:27 pm
  • Yay, Tek!

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:29 pm
  • lol, Thanks. Timlin is a great name to work combos with…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:30 pm
  • Oh, and thanks for the Happy B-days guys. And my Dad isn’t a Sox fan either. I’m the only one in my family who likes sports. In fact, I’m not even that sure how I became a sports fan. it just kind of happened. I’m glad it did though. :)

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:30 pm
  • Yay, Wily Mo! Now we remember why we traded for him :-D

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:31 pm
  • Pena with the bloop single. 1st and 3rd for Trot.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:31 pm
  • Seriously people…Pena. 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a walk. Way to come back, Wily Mo!

    Devine July 20, 2006, 4:34 pm
  • Eek, they’re doing some kind of psycho emergency test, meaning my TV screen just went green.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:34 pm
  • Okay, back now. Momentary thing. That’s better.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:35 pm
  • Up to Gonzo now…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:36 pm
  • Delcarmen in.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:39 pm
  • Delcarmen’s up first, so perhaps it’ll be Deltimlin…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:39 pm
  • I think Paps gets the day off

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:42 pm
  • Pap needs a day off, that’s for sure.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:42 pm
  • Timlin warming

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:43 pm
  • Delcarmen’s curveball is disgusting

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:45 pm
  • Yeah, he’s really figured out how to locate it, and that makes him nigh unhittable…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:49 pm
  • Cora nice bloop base hit

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:49 pm
  • Cora with the bloop single.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:49 pm
  • Crisp has been really struggling, can’t even get a sac bunt down

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:50 pm
  • Ugh, Coco…

    Laura July 20, 2006, 4:51 pm
  • 3 straight foul bunts for the out…

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 4:51 pm
  • So it’ll have to be a 2-run lead.

    Devine July 20, 2006, 4:59 pm
  • Timlin it is! Let’s go Mikey!

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 4:59 pm
  • 1 down!

    Devine July 20, 2006, 5:03 pm
  • One down.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 5:03 pm
  • Thank goodness it’s two runs. Makes me feel a little better… Not as scary…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 5:04 pm
  • 2 down.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 5:05 pm
  • Excellent perfect 9th for Timlin, 4 in a row for the Sox…lets hope Halladay shuts down the Yanks

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 5:07 pm
  • Yay! They won!

    Laura July 20, 2006, 5:07 pm
  • Heck yeah, the offense kicks in just in time, and Wily Mo leads the charge! 4 in a row for the Sox.

    Devine July 20, 2006, 5:08 pm
  • yep, it’s Let’s Go Blue Jays tonight.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 5:08 pm
  • Great game. Schilling a little subpar, offense is there to pick him up.
Let’s go Blue Jays! (Did I just say that?)

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 5:11 pm
  • Just on ESPN XM Radio: Tom Gordon, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu, David Bell for Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera, and PTBNL pending MLB approval

    LocklandSF July 20, 2006, 5:12 pm

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 5:15 pm

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 5:18 pm
  • As am I. Not on ESPN.com and not on the AP wire…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 5:20 pm
  • whoa. i won’t believe that one until i see it in writing. but hey, it could be plausible.

    Laura July 20, 2006, 5:20 pm
  • I’ll post a thread to redirect comments. One sec…

    Paul SF July 20, 2006, 5:20 pm
  • seems like it is still a rumor, haven’t found anything backing it up

    NeffSox July 20, 2006, 5:21 pm
  • that sounds looney, and if true my first take is that it is awful for the Yanks. Hate it.
