The Right Call?

  • Julian Tavarez, career vs. New York: 3-1, 5.35 ERA, 38.2 IP
  • Tim Wakefield, career vs. New York: 9-16, 5.03 ERA, 202 IP

Of 28 career regular-season starts against the Yankees, Wakefield has quality starts (game scores of 50 or better) in just 13. Last night was his worst start ever — both in terms of earned runs allowed (eight) and lowest game score (15) — against New York.

In four career regular-season starts against New York, Tavarez is 2-1, having given up 16 ER in 18.1 IP (7.86 ERA). With the Red Sox, he’s 2-0, with 9 ER in 15.2 IP (5.17).

Just some thoughts.
