The Topps: Hammerin’ Hank in ’58

58topps030

I came across this wonderful 1958 Topps card of Hank Aaron this afternoon, and just thought it was worth sharing. Who could have predicted that this twiggy, beatific young fellow (just 23 years old, but looking no more than seventeen) would become the game’s all-time home run king, even if he was coming off an MVP season? Big news out of Orlando is that no one seems that interested in signing Barry Bonds for next season. Can’t say I’d be too sad to see Hank retain his title.

  • This guy says Boston’s almost certain to sign Lugo. I need a drink…
Maybe we’ll get lucky and Lugo really did accept a lot less money to play SS for Boston? Eh? Eh? Like maybe it’s 4/$24…hey it could happen…

  • I hope that the next time Steve Phillips brings up that ridiculous Bonds to the Red Sox idea he gets attacked by a pack of rabid mastiffs. On camera.
    That is all.

  • …i saw on espn that lugo wants 4/$40…
…bonds to boston…hee hee…heard that rumor too didn’t we d-1?, but unlikely since bonds does not want to play in boston, despite the money that might be thrown at his feet…

  • The only person reporting the Bonds thing is Steve Phillips, who hasn’t actually backed it up with anything short of the, “Boston’s going to trade Manny and need a LF, and Bonds is a LF” logic. Gammons said in his blog, “Boston has no interest in Bonds.” I trust him a hell of a lot more then an idiot like Phillips.
And about Matsuzaka…so far Yankee bloggers are the only ones saying Boston isn’t going to sign him. If we let him go, I’ll admit I was wrong and call for Epstein’s public flogging. Until then…just give it a rest already.
PS: I know Lugo wanted 4/$40. I read elsewhere, though, that Boston offered less money then Chicago and NY, and that Lugo was only considering it because he wants to play SS. I really, really don’t like him at that price…the $24MM thing was just me dreaming.

  • …i just saw 4/$9m for lugo…still a lot of dough…they may just stick with cora and pedroia…
…i’m just joking about the bonds thing…and you’re right, phillips is a moron…espn needs a new “expert”…if gammons says something is so, you can bank it as far as i’m concerned…
…i’m also convinced you will sign dm…just trying to have some fun with that one too…part of the delay is probably due to a few factors: the inital sox offer was quite a bit lower than boras had been hinting at, so there’s some ground to make up; also, he likes to wait until the last minute to sweat the team a bit; and finally, by waiting until some of the other FA pichers are signed, he gets a better measure of dm’s value…since so much money is being offered to [or talked about] some of the other guys, that puts the sox in a tougher bargaining position…but again, i have no doubt a deal will get done…

  • Yeah, I’d prefer it if Mr. Aaron maintained his hold on the crown.
I tend not to post much about trades, signings, and associated rumors because I prefer to see everything settled in place before I start ruminating. There’s too much hand-wringing and “what if” before that.
That said, they’d better sign Matsuzaka, and if they trade Manny (my favorite player), they’d better get something good in return. How ’bout a closer and a decent bat? The Drew/Lugo stuff: whatever…just so long as they field a team that doesn’t suck.
Not exactly pulse-pounding sportswriting or a new opinion, so it’s just as well I don’t post too often I suppose…
