Any existentialist worth his salt will tell you that life is waiting. And nausea. Mostly nausea. But also a lot of waiting. And David Ortiz has won an award for waiting…to bat.
The Edgar Martinez Award, awarded to the most outstanding DH in either the AL or the NL, has been been given out each year since 1973. Ortiz has won the award four straight years. That’s an impressive feat if I understood why there was an award for designated hitters. Are there awards for offensive performances at every position? Maybe. And if so, then this award makes sense.
