The Worst of 2006

So far, it’s been a pretty good baseball year for Yankee fans. Can’t really complain. But the resurgence of the A-Rod flap following Tom Verducci’s SI profile reminds us just how many frustrating storylines there have been this year. Our least favorites:

-Joe Morgan, color commentator
-Ozzie Guillen: homophobe
-Delmon Young’s batt toss
-The Collapse of the Sox (we like competition)
-The A-Rod Contretemps
-Peter Gammons’s aneurysm (welcome back Peter!)
-Jim Kaat’s departure (so long Kitty!)
-Yankee Stadium II
-MLB Advanced Media sues over rights to stats
-Barry Bonds/steroids

That’s 10 off the top of the head. I’m sure there are many more that I’ve thankfully forgotten.

  • I can name one of the best things that this 2006 season brought; LECHE!!

  • For someone who thinks so much about every little thing he says and does, A-Rod sure has a tin ear for public relations.
I mean, what baseball player (or any celebrity) announces that he considers himself “good-looking” — and then uses this high opinion of himself as a reason to play the victim?

  • Michael Kay can not get a pass off this list.

  • Another one for the list: Carl Pavano

  • Liriano’s elbow injury. That’s gotta be high on the list.

  • I have a feeling that the Pavano injury should be on the Best of list.
Re: A-Rod’s foot-in-mouth disease. How do we know that he wasn’t simply being sarcastic with the ‘good-looking’ comments?

  • To add to the Worst list:
    The Erickson/TLong experiment.

  • I think we can all agree the collapse of the Red Sox, while not bad for the Yankees, was not good for the excitement of the pennant race, and therefore for baseball.
    Jon Lester diagnosed with cancer.
David Ortiz benched with heart trouble.
Both bad on a far deeper level than simply the playing field.

  • Oops, missed that YF put the Sox’ collapse on there.

  • brett myers- comeback player of the year for 07.
    jason grimsley- yankee pharmaceutical division.
that damn black crow at second base.

  • Ack, Lester’s cancer is *clearly* worthy of the list. Can’t believe I forgot that one.
Papi too, I suppose, though much less so since it didn’t turn out to be anything serious (though that’s hindsight).

  • “jason grimsley- yankee pharmaceutical division”
And that former Red Sox pitcher who made claims too, and the rumours earlier in the year involving Pujoh’s trainer, and lots of other stuff.
Brett Myers, wifebeater, definitely qualifies for the list. Fugly.

  • rob – not to split hairs but grimsly, i believe, is the first player to have been caught trafficing and distributing HGH. that makes it a little more meaningful than paxton crawford, a bitter guy who made 11 spot starts in two years total and who’s career was over in one calander year, making allegations.

  • Do not forget the Manager in Toronto who thinks he is Mike Tyson and wants to fight all of his players.
I would also nominate an over-hyped trade deadline. Not so much in regards to who did and who did not make moves, but ESPN and blowing up the this guy is headed here and this go is going there.
Lastly ESPN’s love affair with ARod. If ARod did not have some sort of phobia of the media before this season, he definately has it now.

  • Brett Myers, Lester’s cancer, and, Blue Jay Clubhouse Smackdown defintiely go on my list. But I only have room for one ginormous steroid entry. That’s the fugly story of the year/decade.
Best of 2006 comes tomorrow. Feel free to post your nominations here.

  • Giambi’s stache. It has to go on a best or worst list.

    Nick-YF September 20, 2006, 6:01 pm
  • The best is yet to come: WS Championship XXVII.

  • …how about Shilling’s amnesia with congress about what he formerly admitted to knowing about steroids?…that should make the list…or is he just as attention-drunk as arod and made it all up?….by the way, i’m good looking too….

  • what about that crazy manager in a minor league game that went bozo over a call?
who chucks the bases, sprinkles water over homeplate etc,
    good enough?
