The Wright Stuff?

Just as Miguel Cairo turned into Tony Womack, so has, apparently, Jon Lieber morphed into Jaret Wright, signed by the Yankees for 3 years and $21 million—money the team was, it seems, not prepared to lavish on “Liebs.” Joe Girardi is probably upset (the two were friends), and some of the longtime Yankees might not be happy either. According to Buster Olney’s recent book, Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty, Wright is/was one of the few players truly detested by Yankee players (probably the result of a 1999 spring training game in which Wright broke Luis Soho’s hand while brushing him back.) Of course, Clemens was also on their unhappy list. Water under the bridge?

  • More of a problem are Wright’s postseason numbers v. Houston from this year: 2 starts, 9.7IP, 9.31ERA, 14H, 10ER, 5HR allowed. What exactly does this guy offer the team? Terrible pickup.

  • Guy has had 1 good season in his career, which just happened to come under the guidance of miracle-worker/pitching Leo Mazzone. Now he’s going to the Yankees to work with DOA pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre. The results will be predictable. And now the Yankees want to sign Eric Milton too? Be still my heart.
