They Get Paid to Do This? (Spring Training Edition)

George Kottaras, the new catcher in camp who was doing catching drills when the Sox were looking for someone to play catch with Dice-K, had nice things to say about Matsuzaka.

"He seems like he is a great guy, just playing catch with him,” Kottaras said. "He’s smiling at me, we were having fun with it. We just went out there to do a job.”

Most communication, Kottaras said, went through a translator. Matsuzaka spoke once in English, when he said "sorry" after one of his throws nearly got away from Kottaras.

Man, there is nothing to talk about in Fort Myers.  What is this, second grade?  I especially like how George Kottaras can discern that Dice-K is a great guy from a simple game of catch.  I once had a game of catch in elementary school, and four days later the kid I was playing with gave me a massive wedgie and took my pudding cup.  George should watch his back.

explains everything, no? needless to say, the wedgie giver was a yankeefan. (oh, and, yeah, that pudding was GOOOOOOD!)

  • wait, sf: what elementary school did you go to? ahahah. Just kidding, pal.

  • Oh, that DMat. He’s so dreamy.

  • The ball almost got away once from Kottaras?
(It would make a few YFs happy.)

    Devine February 14, 2007, 10:44 am
  • Nah, DMat threw a gyroball, and Kottaras didn’t know how to catch it. DMat, being the gentleman, apologized for being so damn good.

  • i just got an email from the red sox.
i actually “won” the “opportunity” to wait in a virtual waiting room to have the chance to potentially purchase tickets to a yankee game at fenway (if still available if/when i am “selected”).
    i’m a little excited.
after attempting to “win” these lotteries for years, i am actually getting a chance to get fenway yankees tickets at face value…
…i was beginning to think that they only “selected” ticket brokers.
    oh hell yes.

  • Didn’t Matsuzaka look a little hefty around the middle? The guy looked like he was on a steady diet of Dunkin Donuts while “working out” in SoCal?

    Devil Ray's Fan February 14, 2007, 5:10 pm
  • d-ray fan- the nearest dunkin donuts to california is in mesa arizona. please don’t remind me of that fact. theres not one in the entire state.

  • I think the loose-fitting suit Matsuzaka was wearing at his press conference concealed some of his physique. It’s actually kind of interesting to see him in his workout clothes…he looks a lot bigger and stronger than I orginally thought. You know, like a power pitcher.
The slight gut doesn’t bother me. Guy’s got nothing compared to Schilling.

  • Looks like DMat better switch to Asashi Lite.

  • Hmm. Not sure whether to be offended or bemused by those last posts.
I like Kottaras — he had his name bandied about in the press and by fans more the past two days than he probably will the rest of the season. Pretty cool to be him — and not just because he’s in a Major L;eague training camp and is a hot-shot prospect. Which is also pretty cool for him. But you know what I mean. Right? *sigh*

  • Offended?! Oh come on Paul, gimme a break, really.

    Whatever February 14, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Of course, if a Sox fan posted that, Paul would chuckle, but since it’s a Yanks fan, and a Yanks fan who speaks his mind, Paul is trying to decide if he’s offended or not, and puts it in the thread to see if anyone would like to jump my shit about it. Thanks Paul.
FWIW, My wife is from Japan. She’s the one who told me I spelled Asahi wrong. She was standing behind me when I typed in the 2nd post and laughed.

  • Then I guess I’m bemuse. Considering the strength of your (over)reaction, it looks like of the two of us, WE, you’re the one that needs to lighten up.

    Paul SF February 14, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • I am not offended. I screw a lot of White chicks and some of my best friends are White.
They just love it when I do my best cracka-ass-cracka imitations. ;)

fat is cool…check out david wells [formerly of the sox and yanks], manny, ortiz, veratek, shilling…and so on….

  • Well dc, it is what it is.

  • “WE, your the one that needs to lighten up”
The thing is Paul, your subtle little comment about being possibly offended about my innocuous Asahi post put me in an awkward position, suggesting I might possibly be some sort of a racial bigot. That was horse shit Paul, whether you want to admit it or not.

    Whatever February 14, 2007, 10:35 pm
  • manny, ortiz, veratek
dc – Dude. have you ever taken a look through the red sox WS celebration publications? Manny and Varitek are absolutely jacked. There’s nothing fat about them in any way shape or form. You crack me up sometimes with your snide “it’s only funny…” and hopping on WE racist joke train. You’d be better off to distance yourself from that cancer as much as possible.

    Brad February 15, 2007, 8:49 am
  • be some sort of a racial bigot..
What does WE and a racial biggot have in common? They both poke fun at other peoples heritage and cultures.
If you don’t want to be seen as a biggot, don’t act like one.

    Brad February 15, 2007, 8:51 am
  • Here’s Brad, once again trying to make an issue out of nothing simply because he doesn’t like WE.
Brad’s 3rd grade mentality is on display here way too much.

    Frank February 15, 2007, 10:57 am
  • Here’s Frank, posting here only when he wants to incite a fight, never actually adding anything of substance to the discussions we have here, unlike both Brad and WE.
Frank’s third-grade mentality is on display every time he posts, which — though not very often — is way too much.

    Paul SF February 15, 2007, 11:11 am
  • Look, let’s stop the “bigot” attacks. I think WE’s comment was just a bad joke, with plenty of room to appear insensitive; I am frankly surprised that he doesn’t understand how the “solly” quip might be seen as in poor taste. But let’s stop the accusations, since WE explained himself. That should be good enough, so let it go.

    SF February 15, 2007, 11:25 am
  • I chalk it up to “nothing happening” with the “third joke”. Eh.

    Lar February 15, 2007, 12:17 pm
  • PaulSF,
I read the site quite a bit but don’t post often, usually on rare occasions when I think someone is being quite unfair.
This thread seemed destined to be finished last evening after explanations from all who had different perspectives on the “So solly” remark, until Brad launched a witch hunt this morning, which I would say, went way over the top.
The remark by WE may have been said without forethought, but hardly the way Brad portrayed it (WE’s racist joke train). Clearly an unfair attack on WE, at least from my perspective. Name me, if you can, another instance by WE of a racist comment?
I happen to enjoy WE comments here, even if he sometimes seems to stir things up a bit too much.
As for Brad, you can’t deny his juvenile ramblings and crude slaughtering of any thing his narrow mind tells him he doesn’t like.
I’ll try to post more often in the future PaulSF, just for you.

    Frank February 15, 2007, 2:08 pm
  • Ugh. This thread has turned into a personal embarrassment for me. Never occurred to me that my comment would be considered improper but I guess I was wrong. My apologies.
If any of you knew me personally, you’d know how ludicrous this is, but, that’s the way it goes.
SF, thanks for putting a stop to Brad’s hatchet job in my absense, and Frank, thanks for the support, but it’s no big deal. That’s just Brad being Brad.
    End of story, I hope.

    Whatever February 15, 2007, 7:28 pm
  • Frank rocks. Dude, if you have something to say that makes sense, please email me. I don’t know you well enough to attack you. At least I have some sense of WE’s character, and most days, get along with him. You, I don’t even know!
