Those Kuh-RAZY Devil Rays Fans!

We received the following email from an organization entitled "", a splinter fan group purportedly interested in ousting current Devil Rays owner Vince Naimoli: – one of the 2 websites calling for DevilRays owner Vince Naimoli to step down as majority owner, is sponsoring a "Shell Schilling" night at Tropicana field, July 25th, 2005.

Curt Schilling made several comments back in April about the integrity of Lou Piniella and it was not appreciated by fans or the players.  We want to show our disapproval, by sponsoring "Shell Schilling" night when the Sox come to town for a 3 game visit.  We’re also asking all DEVILRAY and YANKEE fans to drop differences for one night, and come out to the game and help outnumber the Red Sox fans. Be sure to BOO the Red Sox and CHEER the Rays. As part of the Promotion, is giving away 2 tickets to the game.  [emphasis mine – SF]

So, they want Naimoli out, and the way they want to show their displeasure is by a) booing the Red Sox (?!), b) taking it out on Curt Schilling (??!!), c) encouraging Devil Rays fans to show up, and d) if they don’t show up, buy tickets (thus lining the pocket of one Vince Naimoli) and give them away, thus freeing up valuable cash to spend on overpriced, watered-down beer, thus further lining the pockets of the aforementioned Mr. Naimoli.  I am still trying to work out how this convinces Naimoli to dump the team.  Perhaps an "Official Give Out Vince’s Home Address and Leave Flaming Bags of Dogsh*t on his Front Step Night" promotion might be a better tactic?

  • They should give the tickets to Vince. If he saw what his team was doing…..

  • Fans of the two richest teams in baseball have the gall to belittle those who aren’t as lucky?!? Hel-looooooo hypocrisy!

  • Well, I don’t think that this event is planned as part of removing Naimoli…
I think this is based on the fact that Curt Schilling is an idiot who talks to much…
And I’m using Schilling’s own favorite word to describe him…

  • Sam, it’s more about the method behind the madness, not the allegiance to the team itself. No offense meant to those who tough it out every day watching teams in small markets. Actually, the D-Rays are a hell of a lot more fun to watch than some other teams out there (though the Royals don’t look so bad all of a sudden, at least the last 14 innings or so!)

  • Bizarre strategery there, VMGoers, but I see that you donate all proceeds from the sale of your website t-shirts (why aren’t there YFvSF t-shirts? coffee mugs? baby gear? where’s the schwag, guys?) to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which, kudos. And you’ve also got a *ton* of young talent–not just Baldelli, Crawford, Cantu, Kazmir (nice trade), but also Delmon Young and BJ Upton will likely make a big collective splash when they make the Show for good–so better times might not be long in waiting. It’d be cool, actually, if every team in the AL East suddenly had serious designs on first place (as long as, y’know…the Bombers end up on top… :) ).

  • FYI, yes, VinceMustGo has other projects that are more fitting to their organization’s stated, primary purpose (including a demonstration & walkout at the ballpark last week). No, this little “Shell Schilling” project isn’t exactly germane to that stated, primary purpose. But did anybody say it was?
The “Shell Schilling” night is an attempt at solidarity. And considering that the Devil Rays routinely have to play “home” games with the Yankees & Red Sox in which the “home” crowd is actively routing against the “home” team, I can’t say I see it as a bad thing.
Will it get Cousin Vinny out the door any faster? No, but he’ll go soon enough anyway. The newspapers have turned on him, town hall has turned on him, the local businessmen have turned on him, his players have turned on him, and now the fans are turning on him. The next owner is already in place in the organization, and it’s just a matter of time for Naimoli and his dummy LaMar.

  • I think this is misdirected angst at the fact that they have a shitty baseball team. Like really…do they think Schilling gives a crap if people boo him, or the Red Sox as a whole?
That’s so completely absurd. VinceMustGo might want to try and be a little more creative…this will only make them look like the childish asshats that they apparently already are.

  • Hey everyone. Thanks for all of the comments. We are planning on a fan protest outside the stadium with signage, etc. before the Red Sox game on July 25th. The “Shell Schilling” promotion was a separate issue and we wanted to give out 2 tickets to help spread the word about the event. It’s a dual thing – protest and Schilling thing. We’re starting to promote the protest this week. Any help anyone here can offer with the press and fans would be appreciated. Contact me at if you so choose. Thanks again!
