Under the Radar

The Yanks signed a centerfielder today: Bernie Williams. (Johnny’s deal is still pending). Bernie returns for one more go-around and $1.5 million. This signing will keep the fans happy (including this one), though many a sabermetrician is less than pleased to see old 51 eating up a roster spot. Anoither take: the Yankees keep their hero, and steal Boston’s too. Call it an early Christmas. And the trains are going back on line to boot. Hurrah.

  • Bern, Baby, Bern.
Remember when Womack, Stanton, Brown and Quantrill were all important Yankees? Last year was quite a season, and I was pleased to see the final home game and pleased to know it was not Bernie’s last home game.

  • As a backup CF/part-time DH, I think Bernie fits the task well. What Bernie brings vs. Bubba: lower average, higher OPS, switch, and can actually hit a double. The transition for Damon may be easier with Bernie around to acclimate him to the task of being the everyday CF. And it just feels like the right thing to do.

  • I hardly think Damon needs Bernie to “acclimate him to the task of being the everyday CF.” Damon’s been playing centerfield for a baseball team for a while now. They’re called the Boston Red Sox, maybe you’ve heard of them.

  • Nothing bad about retaining Bernie’s service for this year, possibly his last. Sentimentality finally plays a role, and in a good way. Even as a Sox fan I think it feels right. As for Damon’s “acclimation”, I think MC was probably referring to Bernie’s ability to help Damon deal with Yankee Stadium’s expansive centerfield, Mattymatty, and nothing else. That’s legit.
And if anything, Bernie sticking around means I get to rag on his cloyingly safe music for another year!

Oh how I will rue the day Bronson is traded!
