(un)Just Desserts

The voting is in, and the balloonish Bartolo Colon somehow beats out the inarguably superior Mariano Rivera for the Cy Young.  First Jeter wins back-to-back GGs, then they give a guy the same award who can’t catch something that doesn’t even spin, and now this.  What the heck is the world coming to? Next thing we know Theo Epstein will be walking away from the Red Sox front off-, er, scratch that.  Someone just make sure to tell Bart that the shiny outside doesn’t conceal a soft, chocolate inside.

(as an aside, at least my cynicism in the voters now seems justified, here)

  • Obviously we love Mo, and would love to see him with a Cy, but it’s hard to see this award not going to Johan Santana. Colon is kind of a ridiculous choice.

  • It seems that in some years they try to turn the CY Young into a semi-pitching-mvp award and give it to a for wins and his team’s playoff appearance. Mo will get his Hall of Fame spot and we will all get to tell future generations how great he was. Bartolo…eh…Los Angeles/Anaheim is a bigger market than Minn. I’m not a fan of how they go about picking awards, you’d think in this case that the writers just looked at the top two teams in every division and looked at their starters, and then stopped at “Wins”

  • Can’t argue with that Walein, except for the part about Mo telling future generations about how great he is. He seems like one of the truly humble greats we have seen play in the last 20 years.

  • I think I wrote “we will all”…no way Mo would…but I definitely will crankily tell future generations about how great Mo was and how crap their closers of the future are (i.e. “Once Mariano Rivera came in in the fifth inning and struck out the next fifteen batters…once Mariano Rivera came in a broke fifteen bats in one inning!”); and I imagine his name will come up all of the time in conversations between SF and YF for years to come…with similar conversation quotes as the ones I gave up above.

  • Oh, yes, you did write “we”. My bad.

  • That’s ok. I didn’t mind (it was a messy post).
    However, the Yanks still rule.
