Wake’s Back: Sox-Royals Gamer I

The Red Sox, skidding into late July, send their ailing knuckleballer to the mound tonight after a long rest.  Questions abound.  Will he hold up?  Will Kevin Youkilis snap out of a horrible slump?  Will the Royals do to the Sox this year what they did to the Yanks last?  Will Curt blog mid-game, and let us know what the heck is wrong with our beloved team?  Will tonight end with the Sox in first or second?  Will we begin the quick descent back into madness after having spent the better part of 7 weeks trying to build up our tolerance for the inevitable tough losses?  Answers during and after the game, and we expect your comments here.

  • All I can say is that we better win tonight. I’m in a craptastic mood after spending seven hours in Driver’s Ed (and learning absolutely nothing) today. Bah. So, on that happy note, let’s go Sox!

    Laura July 17, 2006, 6:01 pm
  • We definately need everyone’s A-game tonight. No mental gaffe’s. Definately do not need the Orc or Seanez making guest appearances.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 6:53 pm
  • DeJesus grounds out to start the game for KC

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:08 pm
  • Wake strikes out the next hitter.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • The ball punk is at the plate now.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • ball punk out after 8 pitch AB.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:13 pm
  • Hopefully Youk has got his game going tonight. We definately need him getting on base.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • 1st bonehead mistake of the night. Youk hits a single to left and gets gunned down stretching it out to a double.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:17 pm
  • it would be nice to have wake go 8 or 9 tonite. and get the win of course. welcome back mr. graffanino. tony’s in the mist of a nine game hit streak. hopefully that ends tonite.

    sf rod July 17, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • Loretta follows that up with a 2 pitch AB that he grounds out to 3rd.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • Tony did a good job last year. Loretta has done pretty good, not sure who is really better though. I know stats say Loretta is.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Papi with a single…Manny up.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • Manny strikes out. This is not the way I anticipated the start of the game. Perhaps if Youk is not nailed on that poor choice we have a different inning.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • “Loretta has done pretty good, not sure who is really better though. ”
    ?
I agree that Graff was servicable last year, but he’s no Mark Loretta.

    Mayday Malone July 17, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • I agree, there at times this season that Loretta has not looked at all like a .300 career hitter. Graf has the luck of hitting in a weak lineup with minimal protection. Ball Punk hits 3rd on the team. Loretta is the player I would rather have though.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:23 pm
  • Why do I already have this feeling of dread…2 hits, no runs, an 0-2 knuckler just hits the leadoff Royal in the 2nd. I know the Sox are the superior team, but it just has that feeling of when your team is a skid, and you have no idea when it’s going to end, no matter who the opponent is.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:24 pm
  • oh….if i forgot……eat a dick doug.

    sf rod July 17, 2006, 7:24 pm
  • Doug = ball punk

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • Stairs down on strikes.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:26 pm
  • Graf pops out in foul territory.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:28 pm
  • 2 out jam for Wake here. No early deficits please!!!

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • OK Wake….pull the head out.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • Gathright to the plate….please do not pull any old TB crap here.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • On a positive note….Yanks down 1-0

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • For the love of god…would someone please pitch like you are getting paid.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Buck at the plate… .241 hitter with 8 HRs and 31 RBIs.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:34 pm
  • Wake pitches to a 3-0 count.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:34 pm
  • F***er.

    Devine July 17, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • pathetic stuff here from Wakefield. Really poor. Walking the bottom of the Royals lineup is inexcusable from anyone.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • Now he has walked in a run.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • At least Lester pitches himself out of the trouble he gets in.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:36 pm
  • This is unbelievable. 3-0 Royals on a squibber that Lowell really should have gotten to.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • Long, drawn out sigh.

    Devine July 17, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • But mainly this is all on Wakefied, who is pitching like total garbage.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • I’m sick to my stomach already.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • Seriously, can someone besides Curt step up and pitch 6 decent innings for a change?

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • I can just see us getting man handled by the Royals. This is exactly what I was fearing would happen shortly after the big win streak.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • I think the Sox got a little lucky there – bang bang play on a nice grab by Gonzalez with a relay to second, forcing the runner. It was really close and to the naked eye the guy looked safe. But the umps usually get those right.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • 2 walks, 2 hits and a pegged batter.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Now, getting one-runned by a team like the A’s, however annoying, is still being shut down by an over .500 division leader. Getting shut down by the Royals just cannot be allowed to happen.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:40 pm
  • This game has put me in a foul mood in 37 minutes flat.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • I agree, but if we do not start hitting this could happen. Look at Youk’s running blunder in the 1st.
    Your quote:
but it just has that feeling of when your team is a skid, and you have no idea when it’s going to end, no matter who the opponent is.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • This is the point in the game and the way we have been playing that a Ron Jeremy quote comes flying.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:43 pm
  • Yanks up 2-1

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • No, I know, Rob. I am about 12 seconds from trying to save my psyche and turning this game off. I don’t want that to be misconstrued as giving up on them, but I just don’t think I want to have another angry night when I should be enjoying the company of my wonderful wife. The Sox aren’t worth it. They have about 4 more outs to do something before I pack it in and have a nice quiet night instead of a bitter one.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • I understand. They are causing me to drink more heavily than a mother in law visit.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • You ask…Coco replies.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • Yeah, but if Doug doesn’t reply then who gives a crap?

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:47 pm
  • Lucky Dougie there. He should have been rung up.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • We suck. Very badly. For the moment. Unwatchable shit. I am going to eat dinner and monitor, maybe I will be back, but for the moment I need a little detox. The Sox are killing me.

    SF July 17, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • Gah. Stupid baseball.

    Devine July 17, 2006, 7:49 pm
  • Amazing that we went out and got Mirabelli back. The guy is hitting a whopping 186 on the season.
We continue to make middle of the road starters look like Cy Young this year. It is maddening.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:50 pm
  • Ball punk down again on a deep fly out to center.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:52 pm
  • Emil Brown with a weak sinlge to right.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • Stairs grounds into a FC…Brown out at 2nd.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:55 pm
  • Urgh. I went out for awhile, and come back to find the Sox losing. To the Royals. Grrrr…

    Laura July 17, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Wake walks Graff…runners on 1st and 2nd. Please do not start this 2 out crap again.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Teahan grounds out to 2nd. Sox get out of the inning without giving up any runs.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Maybe we can get a little something going this inning.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • A-gon with a leadoff single to left.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:02 pm
  • Youk comes up and hits into a DP. Way to ruin that nice leadoff hit.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:04 pm
  • Loretta flies out to left. Another inning of nothing.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:06 pm

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:10 pm
  • DeJesus pops up to 3rd….2 down.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Ortiz grounds out to 2nd.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • Manny flies out to right. The misery continues.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:19 pm
  • Nixon lines out to the pitcher.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Yankees lead 3-1….the Jays lead 3-1.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • FCK SHT FCK SHT FCK SHT FCK SHT!!!!!!
    That is all.
    Carry on.

    LocklandSF July 17, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Delcarmen headed to the mound to relive Wakefield. Something tells me that the old back is not holding up. Definately something we did not need with a round table of 5th starters we have been using.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Delcarmen comes in and gives up a lead off single to ball punk.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:25 pm
  • Brown flies out…1 down, man on 1st still.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:26 pm
  • Stairs strikes out….2 down.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • Graffanino flies out to right. Inning over. Maybe some offense this inning. Looks like we may have to start this with the bottom half of the lineup.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:30 pm
  • Hudson has thrown 58 pitches through 4 innings. It appears he has not been worked hard enough each inning.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • Lowell grounds out to short.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • Crisp singles to center. Mirabelli headed to the plate.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • Mirabelli makes it to 2nd after hitting into a FC. Crisp out at 2nd…Mirabelli advances to 2nd on a throwing error….2 down.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Gonzo strikes out to end the inning. The misery continues.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • 5 innings of nothing from the Sox.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:42 pm
  • Teahan reaches on an infield single.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • Wild mushroom risoto, grilled swordfish steak, summer squash and candied carrots, that’s the dinner I’m eating right now and the only think keeping me going.

    LocklandSF July 17, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • Gathright hit by a pitch. Teahan moves to 2nd. Would seem we are pitch or two away from the Orc and Seanez making an appearance.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • This is killing me.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Yanks 4-1 on Giambi HR, Toronto up 10-1. Uh-oh!

    Paco July 17, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Buck sacrifices the runners to 2nd and 3rd.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • The Jays were up 3-1 at 8:22 pm. In 26 minutes they hung up another 7 runs. That is scary.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • KC hangs another run on us. They are now up 4-0.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Top of the lineup leading off for us. This is the third time through the lineup for Hudson, so we should be able to do something about it.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Youk flies out to center.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 8:52 pm

  • Lowell hits a single to left. men on 1st and 2nd, 1 down.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:12 pm
  • Crisp with a single to right, scores Ramirez from 2nd. Lowell advances to 2nd. This should have Peralta in from the Pen to relieve Hudson.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:14 pm
  • PINCH HIT YOU TARD

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Going yard would be nice here, Doug.

    Brad July 17, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • Sorry, lost my composure there. But how does ‘Belli get this at-bat, hitting .182? Bad odds.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • yeah I agree, SF….so stupid.

    Brad July 17, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • belli ahead 3-1

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • maybe they just said “don’t swing, Doug”

    Brad July 17, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • What a brutal call by the ump there.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:19 pm
  • That’s a terrible call from the guy from KC.
    Wow are we stupid.

    Brad July 17, 2006, 9:19 pm
  • Should be bases loaded, instead it’s a bomb by Doug. Thank you ump. And I will crawl back into my hole.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:19 pm
  • Holy Sheep Shit!!!!! Mirabelli ties the game with a 3 run jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Baseball is such a f*cked up, insanely frustrating, but also enthralling game sometimes. What do I know, though. Nice instincts, Tito. I don’t have them.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:21 pm
  • Gonzo follows up with a K. Youk the “greek god of outs” lately is back up.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:23 pm
  • Youk strikes out looking.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • swinging

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • Youk looks confused at the moment. Do you let him work through the slump a little longer up at the top of the order, or do you bump Coco back, just for a few days, to see if it shakes Youk out of it? I was appalled that Youk was hitting so low in the lineup earlier this year, and glad when he was elevated. But he is really struggling now, inescapably. Seems like a reasonable time to move him down for a little while.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • i’m buying beli a virtual beer. cheers.

    sf rod July 17, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • I would move him down in the lineup. Coco is 3-3 tonight and seemes lately to be hitting better.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • Timlin pitching.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • Timlin working quickly….2 down.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • Timlin has thrown 3 pitches and has 2 outs. Finally someone effectively pitching.
    Delcarmen did throw good tonight.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:31 pm
  • Timlin threw 6 pitches to get through the top of the 8th.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • Loretta, Papi and Ramirez headed to the plate. Does Papi have a another late inning big hit up his sleeve? Lopez is in the BP for us warming up.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:34 pm
  • Loretta smacks a ball right up the middle, like Ron Jeremy in…
    aw forget it.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:36 pm
  • Loretta singles to lead off. I feel something big brewing.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:36 pm
  • 2 pitchers warming up in the KC pen. I am sure one of them is a lefty to face Ortiz.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:36 pm
  • Sisco in to face Ortiz. His ERA is 7.51??

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • Yes Papi!!!! Single pushes Loretta to third. What a nice break, a huuuuuge hop over Mientkieaeajgeiagiaieghaiegicz at first.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • They call him Papi.

    LocklandSF July 17, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • papi with the single to right advancing Loretta to 3rd!!!!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:39 pm

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Wellemeyer in to face Ramirez

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Perhaps it is time to warm up Paps

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • Uh-oh. Willie “pick me off” Harris pinch running at third for Loretta.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • Harris running for Loretta at 3rd?
Do not get some stupid idea of steaing home!!!!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • SF…same fears here!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Drive it deep Manny….just like Ron Jeremy!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Manny swung at a garbage pitch.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:45 pm
  • Finally we have a lead.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • Harris scores on the sac fly. Tito with a good move. With Loretta it would have been close, but the speed did it.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • The fielding continues to be abysmal as Betancourt throws it 10 feet short of Sexson. That’s three errors for Seattle, four for NY.
Cabrera singles to right but gets too aggressive as Jones guns him down at second. AP to third on the play. Cairo up

    attackgerbil July 17, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • ARRRGH. Sorry, sorry. Fleeing your thread pronto.

    attackgerbil July 17, 2006, 9:48 pm
  • Papi steals!!!! And the Sox dugout goes nuts. Maybe that’s just the thing to loosen them all up, get this team back on track. On the other hand, a win would be nicer and they don’t appear all that shaken by the slump, to be honest, compared to us fans.

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • Wow, did I just see that?
    Papi, wow Papi.

    LocklandSF July 17, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • Lowell draws a walk.

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Bring on Paps!!!!

    Rob July 17, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Some guy who was named by Big Pharma is warming in the Royals’ pen. Ambiorix?

    SF July 17, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Phew. A win is a win is a win. Glad I stuck this one out. G’night, everyone.
