Weakest Roster: Sox-Jays Gamer III

It’s a two days old now, but:

“Are you kidding? This is the weakest roster we’ve ever had in September in the history of baseball. We could use help everywhere. I think we have four outfielders—in September. I think we have four infielders—in September. If there are people who could be brought up, we should bring them up. But I don’t know that there are a lot of guys left. I think we have four outfielders. We might have three. No, we have four. Five, counting (Ryan) Kalish, but he’s not playing.” – Bobby Valentine

Uhh, okay.

Jon Lester is on the mound as the Red Sox look to sweep the Jays before heading to Tampa for a four-game set. Brandon Morrow gets the start for Toronto. Comment away.

  • This man is a boob. Seriously. Even A-Rod eventually learned to self-censor so as not to embarrass himself every time he opens his mouth. It’s not even worth picking apart his comments.

  • all i can say about the guy at this point is…oy

For what it’s worth, BV has “clarified” his remark. But for someone who’s said to be highly intelligent and who should be somewhat media-savvy after such a long career, he has to do that an awful lot.

So yeah, the man’s a boob.

Pitcher’s duel in Toronto. I don’t believe this team is capable of a sweep.

  • Morrow has 95 pitches after four, so he might not last that much longer. Lester at a much more economical 47.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 2:30 pm
  • Lester throwing it into center in the 5th was so painful. He’s got two strikeouts after that with men on 1st and 2nd, but the inning should be over. 2-1 count on the batter now. Aaaand the pitching battery have a chat.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 2:43 pm
  • Whew, Iglesias grabs the quick grounder and gets the force at 2nd.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 2:43 pm
  • I thought signing Valentine was pretty much a terrible idea when it happened, tried to warm to the idea, and then found him to be pretty blah in the on-field department and plain awkward in the media-dealing. Doesn’t seem like the player relationship part is going awesome either. He can go after this season please, thanks. (I won’t be surprised if management try to stick with him for one more year, though, yick.)

    Devine September 16, 2012, 2:47 pm
  • Solid running catch by BJ LF to end the top of the 6th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 2:49 pm
  • Somehow Morrow’s pitch count after 5 stands at 101!

Why would management want to stick with BV? Just to prove that the signing was not a mistake? No, he has to go.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 2:51 pm
  • Lester with one hit (Vizquel’s double), one walk, and one horrific throwing error through 6, no runs for either team.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 2:58 pm
  • That deserves a win. Morrow out of the game now.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 2:59 pm
  • Pinch-hitting in mid-count?! WTF?! I have never seen this before.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:09 pm
  • Pretty sure I’ve seen a dude get hurt and have to be PH for, but never just because…and it’s a tapper to the mound.

    I’m sure Iglesias loved that.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:10 pm
  • Might have been a good idea to replace our can’t-hit-a-lick shortstop of the future before the at-bat.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:10 pm
  • I’m sure BV just gained another friend on the team.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:11 pm
  • Two-out rallye by the Blue Jays brings in a run. BS.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:18 pm
  • And another two. I knew a sweep was too much to ask for.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:19 pm
  • That came apart fast, 3-0 Jays.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:19 pm
  • At least streaming MLB.TV I can watch other good, playoff-relevant games. Gonna go wth CIN-MIA for now, though LAA-KC looks promising too.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:26 pm
  • This just about sums it up: back-to-back singles by Pedroia and Ellsbury, Ross grounds into double-play, inning over just like that.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:29 pm
  • Todd Frazier leads off with a double for the Reds in the top of the 7th with the score 4-2 in Cincinnati’s favor. Navarro flies to left.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:31 pm
  • Ball squirts away a bit, but Frazier stays put.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:32 pm
  • Grounder to 2nd, routine as all get out, moves runner to 3rd with 2 out.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:33 pm
  • Daniel Bard comes in to pitch the bottom of the 8th. Two pitches, two hits (a ground-rule double and a single), one run. That’s economical in the worst way.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:33 pm
  • And now a four-pitch walk to Arencibia.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:34 pm
  • Why waste pitches when you’re going to walk him anyway …

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:34 pm
  • Pitcher pops out in foul territory forcing the right fielder to run quite a ways. And “God Bless America” yet again drives me to another game, where Philly tries to continue their drive up to the wild card, 2.5 back today.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:35 pm
  • Miller time. What a disastrous outing for Bard!

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:36 pm
  • Doc “AL East Beast” Halladay has given up 2 through 5 to the Lastros (I call them that fondly from my childhood memories from Texas), while Philly has 4 runs of their own.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:37 pm
  • Doth Gameday deceive me? Is Atchison, our pitching MVP, on the mound in Toronto? That’s rad.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:40 pm
  • Of course more runs score. LOL, Red Sox.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:41 pm
  • Miller gets an out but is replaced by Aitcheson who promptly gives up a single which scores another run.

pale blue eyes September 16, 2012, 3:43 pm
  • Atchison limits the damage to one more run for Bard’s disastrous record. 5-0, all done but the crying. To me, it’s just cosmically funny when they lose now, though.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:45 pm
  • Cincinnati’s lead has shrunk to just one in Miami, 4-3 in the top of the 8th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:47 pm
  • OMG, that Astro just SLAMMED Halladay’s pitch to right field, whoa. Philly down to a one-run lead in the 6th. Just BLASTED off the facing of the second deck.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:52 pm
  • Halladay up over 100 pitches with 2 outs in the 6th, gives up the double for his second XBH in a row. I think they’ll try one more batter. Yeah, pitching coach coming to the mound, not Manuel.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:54 pm
  • Milwaukee, also striving for a wild card slot, is up 3-0, batting in the bottom half of the 7th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:56 pm
  • Full count for Halladay…

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:57 pm
  • AMAZING curveball strikes the dude out. Ohhh, he’s arguing like a bitch, but he is soooo out. Great pitch.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 3:57 pm
  • Michael Martinez doubles for the Phillies thanks to a brutal play near the wall by the Astros LF. Very poorly tracked, turned body around awkwardly.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:01 pm
  • Miami bunts the tying run to second with one out in the bottom of the 8th as Cincinnati closes in on their inevitable divisional title. Now two down, the runner does not advance.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:04 pm
  • Jose Reyes batting for the Marlins with two down. Strike one looking on the breaking ball.

OH, a double off the very top of the wall! Tied! Baseball is a fun game when you have no real horse.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:05 pm
  • A bad play by the Houston RF this time leads to an incredible leap-and-grab near the wall for the 3rd out. It was like he flung himself up and snatched it out of the air, twisting as he did it. Circus play, indeed. Still 4-3.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:15 pm
  • Yanks win.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:16 pm
  • White Sox (leading Central by 1) are crushing the Twins 9-2 in the 6th. Detroit (1 GB division, 3.5 for the wild card) is ahead of Cleveland 3-0 in the 4th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:19 pm
  • MIA and CIN in the bottom of the 9th tied, with the Marlins looking to walk off. Always enjoy watching potential walk-off sitcheeations.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:20 pm
  • I will say this: the extra wild card leads to a lot more games being relevant in the last couple weeks of the season. But I hate the “it all comes down to game 163 (or 164 if division ties or whatever)” format, even though I like how it puts a premium on winning the division. I think a lot more sub-par teams will make it into the “tournament” this way over the years.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:24 pm
  • All the AL division races are tight, two-team races. The 2nd place team with the greatest deficit as of this moment is Oakland, two games behind the Rangers. Orioles could be that far back tonight, as could Detroit.

    Extras in Miami!

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:28 pm
  • Indians have closed the gap, 3-2 Detroit in the 5th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:30 pm
  • Houston loads the bases with one out BOT 7, still trailing by one.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:36 pm
  • Brewers win 3-0, keep hope alive.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:37 pm
  • Crazy! Two-run bloop double just fair, rolling to the wall for Houston, who lead 5-4 over Philly now, with runners 2nd/3rd, one out.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:38 pm
  • Houston gets another clutch knock and it’s 7-4, bad news for the Phightin’ (to stay alive) Phils.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:44 pm
  • Bottom 10th, Marlins have runners at 1st and 2nd, two out, after Reyes finds a way to hit a pitch shoulder high and way outside into right field. Score is still tied and a pitching change comes.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:48 pm
  • Cleveland have taken lead 4-3 over Tigers. CIN-MIA game goes into the 11th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:52 pm
  • Angels keep pace in West and WC races, 4-3 Final over KC.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:56 pm
  • Two on, none out for Reds, Top 11. Carlos Zambrano on mound facing Ryan Ludwick.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 4:59 pm
  • Cincinnati goes ahead, still 1st and 2nd, none out, 5-4 lead, as Zambrano is wildly outside the strike zone on most of his pitches.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 5:02 pm
  • Phillies attempting a comeback, are now down 7-6 with a runner on 2nd and one out in the top of the 8th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 5:06 pm
  • White Sox make victory official. Cincinnati gets just the one run going to the bottom of the 11th and Philly still trails by one going to the bottom of the 8th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 5:10 pm
  • Astros win 7-6, and the Phillies’ odds get worse as they leave the tying run at 2nd in the 9th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 5:25 pm
  • Cubs have come back from trailing 9-5 to leading 10-9 over the Pirates who themselves hope to stay alive in the WC chase. Detroit new leads Cleveland 6-5 in the 7th.

    Devine September 16, 2012, 5:27 pm
  • That is some impressive multi-game-play-by-playing Devine…

  • Heh, the kid was asleep and I had some time to kill. And I’m on percocet thanks to a wisdom tooth extraction (the last one, thank goodness) on Thursday…might have made me babbly…

    Devine September 16, 2012, 6:54 pm
  • Also Cleveland won that game 7-6 in the 9th. Detroit falls to 2 back in the division.

I…I think tonight when Baltimore wins the Red Sox are officially (haha) eliminated from postseason contention. Or maybe it’s the A’s who have to win. Well, probably today or tomorrow anyway.
