Who’s Buyin’?

Wires report the Yanks and D-Backs have come to terms—Vazquez, Navarro, Halsey, and cash for the Unit—but that the deal will not be done until 2005, leaving open this question: who wins The Great Pastrami Wager, in which SF guaranteed a deal complete by the new year? Those leaning toward SF would do well to keep in mind what happened the last time this swap seemed “in the bag.”

  • Tough one. It seems that if the deal is agreed to, and both teams submit the paperwork to MLB for approval by tomorrow, then all it requires is the rubber stamp of Bud Selig (and what is Selig if not a rubber stamp!?) and that seems to indicate that the deal is consummated. Though the technical approval and physicals wouldn’t be complete until 2005 seemingly tipping the bet in favor of YF, the spirit of the deal, the terms of the deal, the deal itself would be complete (no third party of the Dodgers to muss up the swap in this case), in my favor. How about a compromise, since I don’t think YF wants to question my aptitude in calling this deal essentially a foregone conclusion (and within a day at that!), and I feel like the technical deadline of Dec. 31st is definitely worth something: YF ponies up the pastrami in question, but I’ll kick back a big fat knish (on the menu at Katz’s as the “David Wells”) and a can of Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda.

  • If it is a done deal, then I vote Sox Fan wins the bet. Mmmm, pastrami.

  • We agree to SF’s terms. As we’ve maintained from the outset, this seems to be a win-win )for us. Pass the mustard.
