Who’s On In First? Yanks-SatanFish Gamer II

With the Sox currently losing to the Angels, our Yankees could be in first place before this thread even gets a serious groove on. Anyhow, the Big Unit looks to build on last night’s work of sheer genius by Chien Ming Wang, and he’ll do it against Mets castoff Jae Seo (who clocks in at 2-9, 5.71). Onward and upward. Comment on all the action here….

  • PS: The Braves passed Wilson Betemit off to the Dodgers, so if you thought acquiring him for Proctor was a bad idea, as was rumored, you no longer have that to worry about.
    Carry on.

  • I won’t rest easy until it’s 4:01pm on Monday and Phil Hughes, Melky, etc. are still with us.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 3:56 pm
  • The Unit’s win-loss record over the last 10 games bears resemblance to a pogo stick.
Wang’s performance last night: best of the year for any Yankee pitcher? Wish I could have watched it live.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:02 pm
  • Wang was absolutely dominating last night. Sometimes it doesn’t seem that way because he doesn’t strike out a lot of people and he doesn’t get as much attention, but DRays looked totally overmatched.

  • Lugo pops out to lead it off. Game on.

  • Nice quick inning for RJ, highlighted by a good play by Andy and a fly out that Bernie made unnecessarily exciting.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:12 pm
  • Baldelli flies out to right. Top half over. Same lineup as last night for NY.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 4:25 pm
  • …is sadly wasted as Bernardino flies out to end it. Still, 2-0 after 1.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:25 pm
  • Meanwhile in Beantown Mike Sciosia decides to gift-wrap the game for the Sox….6-6.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:28 pm
  • Bleh. JD bobbles a deeeeeeep fly ball and ends up with an error for his trouble. 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs.

  • Navarro with an RBI single. 2-1.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:32 pm
  • Make that 3-2 Satan Fish. YES commenting Randy seems uncomfortable. That’s exactly what we need…

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:35 pm
  • Wow, Johnson’s shitting the bed today.
And there’s literally zero chance that the Red Sox are losing a tie game at home.
Don’t you hate when bad things happen back-to-back like that?

    yankeesnj July 29, 2006, 4:35 pm
  • Now Yankees get jobbed on a pickoff throw to 2nd. Runner was soooo out. Great game it’s shaping out to be.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:37 pm
  • Finally out of it. Tampa owns Randy, don’t they…

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 4:40 pm
  • The .5 game lead has happned like so many times already this year. The Yanks get to .5 game back or .5 game lead and the Sox wake up (thank god) and post a few wins to match some Yanks losses and the lead is back.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 4:41 pm
  • Randy is not right. Torre better get someone up soon…

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:12 pm

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:12 pm
  • Thanks Rob. Remember Tavarez is pitching.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:12 pm
  • bad Andy!

    Nick-YF July 29, 2006, 5:13 pm
  • YM…no need for that. We both have our crosses to bear today. You with Randy and us with the swamp thing.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:14 pm
  • Grumble grumble. Oh well, 2 runs is nothing to sneeze at. Provided RJ locks it down from here.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:14 pm
  • Randy needs to be taken out of this game pronto

    Nick-YF July 29, 2006, 5:17 pm
  • Leave Randy in.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:19 pm
  • Shuddup Rob, you’re not helping!

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:20 pm
  • Yes I am. I’m helping us.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:21 pm
  • Damn…Chacon in the game.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:25 pm
  • And Chac pours gas on the fire by hitting Wigginton to load the bases. Bad Rob!

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:26 pm
  • Papi wins it for the Sox!!

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:26 pm
  • Color me shocked.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:27 pm
  • JC Romero served up the single to left.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:28 pm
  • Not good….walks in the run.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:31 pm
  • Walks in a run after like 20 pitch AB.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:31 pm
  • That pitch wasn’t even close to the strike zone.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:31 pm
  • Shawn Chacon is awful

    Nick-YF July 29, 2006, 5:32 pm
  • *groan*

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:32 pm
  • Gomes swung at a bad pitch for strike 2

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:33 pm
  • Hey look, an out!

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:33 pm
  • Swings at even worse pitch for strike 3.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:34 pm
  • Hollins…..Yankee Killer.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:34 pm
  • A single just past ARod. 10-4. I think they’re trying to rival that Texas game where they came back from 9-0. I’d rather they didn’t….

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:35 pm
  • well, I’m finished paying attention to this game. Yanks fans, if there is someone you want to boo, his name is Randy Johnson.

    Nick-YF July 29, 2006, 5:35 pm
  • Tonight I am going to say a little prayer for Randy. It is going to involve some chicken bones and a Voodoo doll.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:36 pm
  • And Torre. He should’ve pulled RJ after 3 innings. It was obvious he had nothing.
Chacon strikes out whoever to end it. 10-4. Stage is set for a glorious comeback….

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:37 pm
  • Chacon ends the pain and damage.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:37 pm
  • 10 runs on 7 hits & 4 walks.

    Rob July 29, 2006, 5:38 pm
  • ChiSox take the lead on O’s 5-3 in the 3rd. Oakland leads BJs 5-4 in the 5th.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:40 pm
  • Phillips needs another kiss from ARod. It’s the only thing that’ll make him hit again…So does the rest of the offense, for that matter.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:45 pm
  • I’m outta here. Perhaps the home team has a miraculous comeback in them.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 5:50 pm
  • Bottom of the 6th….TB 18, Yanks 5

    Rob July 29, 2006, 6:52 pm
  • My god. What the hell is this. I leave to be productive with a good feeling in my heart, and come back to this? Absolutely disgusting.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 6:58 pm
  • Shawn Chacon broke Wigginton’s hand? Bad karma.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:00 pm
  • You were really asking for it by staring this post with that bit about the Yankes may be in 1st place before this gamer even gets underway…

    Hudson July 29, 2006, 7:06 pm
  • Fasano commits an error on a throw to first allowing a run to score. 19-5 TBSF

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:07 pm
  • “You” as in Yankees fans in general, or “You” as in me? YF called down the lightning on that gamer post, not me. :)

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:08 pm
  • Wigginton had a ten game streak going prior to getting hit. That stinks. I truly feel bad for the guy, getting injured by one of our guys in a ridiculous game.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • Ahhhh yes, what delightful game to watch… Why you ask? Well for one I’m a Red Sox fan, Number two because Randy Johnson flat out REFUSED to play for the Red Sox, last place he’d play(thank god). Hey you think the Yanks could coax Flaherty back out of retirement to catch RJ? probably would be worth it. Third, I am so sick of the DRays playing like monsters against the Red Sox and lying down like dogs against the Yanks… BUT NOT TODAY BABY! Hey, you think A Rod will win MVP over Papi this year?

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:13 pm
  • Brian, last year Tampa Bay did a very good job against the Sox.
No, I don’t think ARod will win MVP over Papi, but I think it is quite possible someone else will win it other than Ortiz, though Papi is having a fine season.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • Edit on that first line.. Tampa Bay did a very good job against the Yanks rather.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • For only the second inning in the game TBSF fails to plate a run, the other being the top of the first, which feels like it was a long, long time ago. Heading to the bottom of the ninth needing 3 grand slams and a 3 run homer to take the lead.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • Nice pickup for the Yankees over the winter… Mike Myers… he actually has posted pretty good numbers and got Papi out a couple of times…BUT NO GOOD NUMBERS TODAY! Whoooie lets see 0.0 innings pitched(thats no outs folks), 2 of 2 inherited runners scored, 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned 1 homer SWEET!
Now, that there, is called: ineffective

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • It seems MFP’s doppelganger is a Sox fan. How fitting.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 7:23 pm
  • This is actually a fairly fast game for one that involves 24 runs. We need Jack Bauer to solve this crisis pronto. What would he do? Push Randy up against a wall and tell him in a gravelly voice, “Stop sucking!” Keifer is under 6 foot tall. That would probably be a bad bit of casting.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:24 pm
  • LOL, Gerbil. Actually, it’s all your fault leaving when it was still looking good for the home team.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • Yes, we are in complete agreement, Brian: each NY pitcher was horrid in every way today, except for Villone when it was far beyond mattering. Do you want to go through the box score and itemize each one?

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:26 pm
  • YM: I actually had the same thought. If I hadn’t left the game thread, this wouldn’t have happened. It’s all *my* fault. *sobs* ;)
Looks like Jeter hit well today, at least.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:29 pm
  • I dunno though if Papi keeps it up like today 4 for five hitting to all fields with league leading numbers and huge clutch hits like today, who will beat him out?

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • AG: you missed the best part, too. ARod getting booed when he made an out with the Yankees down 13-5.

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 7:32 pm
  • Yeah, it was a crumby day for the Yanks pitching-wise, but I just thought Myers deserved special attention there

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:32 pm
  • Brian, what do you have against Myers? It’s not like Sox wanted him back, ya know….Don’t be hatin’!

    yankeemonkey July 29, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Some days ago I posted that Myers could be relied upon to be used in more than left-hand specialty one-batter situations. I offer a full retraction and regret the error.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • Hard to believe that, YM. Booing in that situation is beyond the pale.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:39 pm
  • Do you want to go through the box score and itemize each one?
Actually Gerbil after seeing the Sox go down 2-0 in the first then 6-3 late and the Yanks go up 2-0 in the first against the fish, and seeing the final result, oh yeah, I REALLY do want to itemize each of them and savory it. This WAS going to be such a bad day…

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • I think Brian is happily celebrating a phenomenal comeback by Boston, and enjoying piling on the Yanks almost as much as the TBSF did. I should not be so jumpy.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Working on a post about the “significance of a blowout.” back later. Good day, folks.

    attackgerbil July 29, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Yeah, it’s true, I am celebarating maybe a tad too much and I don’t hate Myers
It was a good pick-up he has pitched fairly well, just not today my oh my

    Brian July 29, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • I just can’t help it… I love this thread, perhaps that is because I know the probability is that the Yankees will destroy the Rays today and conversely, the Angels may well beat the Red Sox in the finale… leaving a slim .5 lead, but nontheless, a lead, for the Red Sox, who could well have exited the weekend 1 1/2 games BEHIND the Yankees.
    Savory, is right…
