  • I can’t remember ever seeing that. Ever. The Yankees have gifted the Sox too many outs the past two games.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:41 pm
  • Well done Nova. That could have led to a chain of s%*t runs like yesterday’s E-fest. Still, that hurts.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:42 pm
  • Leadoff double by Nix. Wasn’t expecting that. Can Stewart at least get him over…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:46 pm
  • :) Sox cross-up their signals and Stewart no longer needs to bunt…just bloop one chris.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:47 pm
  • Sac fly. 3-1. Nava almost gunned him down.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:47 pm
  • Jeter 2-for-2.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:48 pm
  • Fancona and Orel fawning all over Jeter. I love it. Yanks haters must despise it.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:49 pm
  • Granderson plunked. Lester looking ragged. Make him pay Teix…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:49 pm
  • 3-1 damage pitch to Teix…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:52 pm
  • Teix looks like a statue watching pitch after pitch off the plate get called for strikes. As long as Nova gets that call too I don’t care.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:53 pm
  • A-Rod up. Boston fans can relax.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:53 pm
  • A-Rod is just not a clean-up hitter anymore. Please bump him down to 6th soon Joe..

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:55 pm
  • Jeter acting like his right shoulder is really bothering him. What’s that about…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:55 pm
  • Another harmless pop-up by Alex. So, so, so predictable.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 8:56 pm
  • ARod is utterly and completely worthless.

A decent defensive, single-hitting veteran player.

That makes $30 million a year.

    For 7 more years?

    Vomit.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 8:57 pm
  • Fuckin’ Red Sox.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:02 pm
  • Lester’s been so shitty compared to what he should be. Injury? Just bad luck? Annoying.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:03 pm
  • Not exactly 7 krueg, thank God. But 5 after this year, which is 5 too many.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:04 pm
  • That actually made me feel better IH. Thanks!

    ONLY 5 more years…

    krueg July 8, 2012, 9:05 pm
  • Ciriaco, eh? Did someone take Punto out back and shoot him yet?

Nope, he’s on deck now. What a waste of space.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:19 pm
  • Thank goodness for Papi since that’s all we’re getting this inning. Within one. Hold tight, Lester.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:22 pm
  • Had to step out – come back to an Ortiz RBI double. Lovely. We’re back to 2003 when I will say it again and again: make that guy move his damn feet. I’m not advocating head-hunting. But he hangs all over the god-d*$ned plate. Knock him back once in a while.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:23 pm
  • A headfirst slide into first and Punto is actually safe. 1st and 2nd with one out. Cody Ross up.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:25 pm
  • 2-1 to Ross. Trouble.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:26 pm
  • 3-1. Not good.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:27 pm
  • Here comes the implosion.

This win is huge for Boston. Fought back and showed some heart…

    krueg July 8, 2012, 9:28 pm
  • Bases loaded. Perhaps I should just step out again.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:28 pm
  • Salty down on 3 pitches.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:30 pm
  • I dun toldja.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:30 pm
  • And then a weak grounder to 1st. Way to bear down Nova.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:30 pm
  • Stewart Ks, but made him work at least. jeter up.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:36 pm
  • Something is clearly wrong with Jeter’s right shoulder.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:38 pm
  • Jeter Ks. Lester going to full counts on everyone but getting them out.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:39 pm
  • Lester has always thrown too many pitches (that is, he takes a lot of pitches to get through innings), but this year has been the worst in my memory. Seems likely to be borne out by facts given his high ERA and such.

14 pitches to get two outs (both K’s).

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:40 pm
  • Lester Ks the side. Can Nova come back strong???

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:40 pm
  • Basically if it is between the batter’s boxes for Lester, it’s a strike.

    Got it.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 9:40 pm
  • 19 to get three (all K’s).

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:40 pm
  • Got tickets to join my brother at the Yanks-Angels game on Friday. Will be my first visit to the stadium this year. Can’t wait. I need a stadium burger…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:45 pm
  • Three quick outs for Nova. And that was a horrible swing by Nava. Nice.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:47 pm
  • Ridiculous single for Teix off the wall.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:50 pm
  • Alex. Do something. Please. Something good I mean.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:51 pm
  • Decline-Rod.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:52 pm
  • A-Rod does something!! YES!!!! Just as Orel is dumping all over him. hey Orel, let Yankee fans dump on him. You lay off. And Sweeney is down after a valiant yet frankly very awkward attempt at it.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:54 pm
  • That was awesome.

    ARod finally comes through.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 9:55 pm
  • These games almost mean no more to me than the other 143/144 games.

    Almost.

Fuckin’ run-scoring triple with no outs. Off to pick up the wife and kid from the airport (we were flying standby and for various reasons I went first on the last seat on a plane).

    Devine July 8, 2012, 9:55 pm
  • Gotta give Sweeney props for that. Ouch.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:55 pm
  • Cano. We need the A-Rod run too. No lead is safe.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:56 pm
  • Lester makes Cano look horrible. All we need was a pop fly. Damn.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:58 pm
  • Come on Swisher. Knock Lester out of this one.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 9:58 pm
  • Swish walks. Up comes Jones.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:01 pm
  • Single brings in A-Rod. Lester on the ropes.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:02 pm
  • What a series for Andruw.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:02 pm
  • That’s right krueg. Racked up the RBIs in the past 48 hours.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:02 pm
  • Sweeney saves at least one run with a nice diving play. He must have been relieved there was no concrete wall to crash into on that one.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:08 pm
  • SCREAMING for that one to fall…great play.

    Damn it.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:09 pm
  • Pedro Ciriaco is destroying the Yankees this series. He annoys me.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:11 pm
  • Knock Ortiz on his a#% please. Just once.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:12 pm
  • OK – I’ll take the GIDP instead.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:14 pm
  • Teix can’t handle it.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:16 pm
  • Nova Ks Ross. He has overcome some shaky defense. Take notes Hughes.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:18 pm
  • Switching back and forth to Caddyshack. Chevy Chase just recounted the story of his roommate from college, Mitch Cumstein. This movie still ranks supreme among all slapsticks. Just brilliant.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:21 pm
  • I love watching Jeter’s ABs.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:23 pm
  • Jeter.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:24 pm
  • And another single :)

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:24 pm
  • Who’s the supermodel sitting right next to the Yanks dugout…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:25 pm
  • Granderson barely beats out the DP. I thought he was going to be toast. He really is slumping.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:26 pm
  • And Teixeira then beats out the DP. Now that I REALLY didn’t think would happen. Francona rightly points out that Ciriaco screwed that one up. Up comes A-Rod.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:28 pm
  • A-Rod just missed that one. ends up a pop fly. Can Nova pitch out the inning?

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:30 pm
  • I hope so.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:31 pm
  • Nova Ks Salty. I don’t know the stats, but it feels like Salty has K’d a ton of times in this series. Nova pushing 105 pitches…

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:35 pm
  • “Caddyshack”
right on IH…absolutely loved rodney dangerfield and ted knight in that movie…

    dc July 8, 2012, 10:36 pm
  • “Nova pushing 105 pitches…”
joe said earlier that the whole bullpen is available, except logan

    dc July 8, 2012, 10:37 pm
  • 10 K’s.

    Outstanding outing from CSN.

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:37 pm
  • Nova logs his 10th K. He has grinded his way to a very good game.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:37 pm
  • yep…earlier in the game i woulda bet that it could have gone either way for nova…he came around nicely

    dc July 8, 2012, 10:39 pm
  • “It’s easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you’ve got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat”

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:41 pm
  • Hey dc…
Yankees making Atchison look good. They need to pound him.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:42 pm
  • A double for Swisher that would have been a pop fly anywhere else. Up comes Jones.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:44 pm
  • ANDRUW JONES!

    krueg July 8, 2012, 10:46 pm
  • I love the way he hits HRs. Like Sheffield, he just sits on fastballs and takes the most vicious hacks ever. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen him hit a cheap one.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:46 pm
  • The only thing louder than the crack of that bat was Atchison immediately screaming F%#K!

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:47 pm
  • That looked about a foot high. Andruw, way to kill them. Nice weekend.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 10:48 pm
  • Finally fixed that broken Suntori link, not that it matters. Punters should be punnished.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 10:50 pm
  • Wouldn’t be surprised if Joe sends Nova back out. He was v strong in that last inning and has the ASB for extra rest.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:50 pm
  • So this is how the more-or-less halfway mark ends. All-but-swept by our fiercest rival at home to be sent back to .500 and into the cellar…again.

Yet reinforcements await beyond and we are 2.5 from the second wild card (BAL) and 5.0 from the first (LAA).

You know, to play one game to see if you get in.

This season is primed to be a severe kick in the balls. That’s pretty much what the experience has been like on a more low-grade level thus far.

    Devine July 8, 2012, 10:53 pm
  • Danny Noonin about to walk into Judge Smails’ office for the classic “do you stand for good, or do you stand for evil?” speech. Priceless. My niece has a certain…..zest for living…..

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:55 pm
  • “I’ve sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn’t want to do it. Felt I…owed it to them.” :)

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:56 pm
  • 4-pitch walk Take that man out back and shoot him. What the hell.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:57 pm
  • 5 straight balls. You have a 5-run lead. Loft the God-d%$ned ball over the plate if you have to! This idiot’s going to load the bases for Ortiz, just watch.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 10:58 pm
  • Yank him right away. I’m serious. Get him the hell out of this game. 7 balls on 8 pitches???? Then barely misses giving up a double.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:00 pm
  • He ain’t quite done yet.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:00 pm
  • PULL HIM JOE. No. Not Larry Rotchild. I want Girardi. Do not let these guys back in on the arm of Eppley.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:01 pm
  • Ciriaco, the sudden all-star. Great. And Eppley is nowhere NEAR the plate.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:02 pm
  • THROW STRIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:03 pm
  • Hey, an out!

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:05 pm
  • One out. Goodbye Eppley.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:06 pm
  • If Rapada keeps tempting fate by throwing to first I’ll put a fist through the screen.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:10 pm
  • Awesome. Makes Ortiz look bad. SWEET!

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:10 pm
  • Beeeeeaaaauutiful.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:11 pm
  • Crisis averted. Robertson did more work jogging out than on the bump.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:15 pm
  • Damn. Now I am hungry for lobster.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:17 pm
  • There must be nothing wrong with Jeter. Otherwise, there is no way he would be out there right now.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:18 pm
  • Wow… Awesome diving catch by Ciriaco to rob ARod of a single.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:25 pm
  • Hope you’re right about Jeter AG. Robertson deals the 4-pitch walk to Saltalamacchia.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:29 pm
  • Robertson throwing lots of balls. Evens the count on Sweeney.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:31 pm
  • Orel hangs the game around Gomez’s neck for not converting the DP in the 1st. A bit harsh considering the Yanks scored 7.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:33 pm
  • Robertson not sharp. What is it with these games that no pitcher for either team can shut either line-up down? It’s not like they don’t occasionally get shut down by other pitchers. Just grueling. This game suddenly ground to a halt.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:35 pm
  • I thought that was a 3-run dinger off the bat. Phew. 2nd and 3rd now with Nava up.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:38 pm
  • Now Robertson can’t throw strikes.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:38 pm
  • Wow.. Just missed being over the monster.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:39 pm
  • Me to, ih.. I was sure that was gone.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:39 pm
  • Great wood on it and gave it a ride but Nava just doesn’t have the pop. Robertson can breath.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:40 pm
  • Whew.. Should have been a much better situation for Boston.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:41 pm
  • It being a Sunday night with a late start, they HAD to make this a 4-hour game. What else is new.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:43 pm
  • Cano leadoff double.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:43 pm
  • Sweetest swing, Robi. Crushed that. Home run anywhere else.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:45 pm
  • Oh my God. Andruw Jones is killing balls. That was close.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:48 pm
  • Maybe you don’t pitch to dru right now.. I so wish that could have Pudged that.

    attackgerbil July 8, 2012, 11:50 pm
  • My 4-year old just awoke with 102-degree fever. Going to go take care of her. See ya AG. Go Yanks.

    IronHorse - YF July 8, 2012, 11:51 pm
  • I hope she comes around quickly and feels better soon.

    attackgerbil July 9, 2012, 12:12 am
  • Good luck IH.

Best record in MLB. The Universe has righted itself.

I still cannot believe Jeter dropped that pop up.

    krueg July 9, 2012, 12:34 am
  • Love the new digs! Too bad the SFs don’t show up any more. Funny how even the “diehards” turn out to be fair weather fans. Then the question becomes where all the YFs went?

Crazy how good this Yankees team is looking. I have no faith in them in October after Sabathia, but this sure is fun. An old team simply playing winning baseball (except for the slopfest Saturday night – I had to sit through it)

    James YF July 9, 2012, 6:46 am
  • we’ve already had the conversation a few times james…i stayed away for awhile because the content of the site had become way too sox-heavy dispite the fact that yankee mods outnumber sox mods…the sox regulars that you don’t see participating regularly have commented that they are too busy right now…i’ll buy that, because i know i’ve been very busy too…i admitted that it is easier to find time when my team is doing well…does that make me a “fair weather fan”?…so be it…i’m probably one of the few fans here old enough to have been through the very lean yankee seasons…the ones where last place was more likely than first place, and the playoffs were a distant memory of bygone seasons…since ’96 i’ve been spoiled rotten, and as my sox friends like to jab, somewhat entitled…it would be hard for me to muster any interest if the yanks were doing poorly…as it is, i’m not satisified with 1st place, a 7 game lead, or the best record in baseball…i still stress over missed opportunities and jeter dropping an easy pop up and mis-playing a couple of ground balls last night…it is unlikely that you can find even one sox fan that would admit that they too have become spoiled and entitled by their team’s recent success because it would be admitting they’ve become yankee-fan-like, but it’s true, some of them are like me…the sting of last september’s embarrassing record collapse is still fresh, and the disappointment that this season is so far, has to be very frustrating for proud fans, so i’m not at all surprised that their interest is lukewarm at best, and other priorities have taken over their lives…that said, i hear that the sox are only 2.5 games out of the wild card race going into the 2nd half, so maybe things will heat up here as the sox get back some of their injured and start their inevitable push…i do share your doubt that this yankee team is built for anything but a strong regular season…playoffs?…not so much…too many playoff chokers, pitching is thinner than it looks, and no mo…that, and the “rangeless one” can’t even catch a routine pop up anymore…

    dc July 9, 2012, 9:24 am
  • I will take CC, a healthy Pettitte, Kuroda, and Nova – yes Nova – in the playoffs with Hughes, Joba, Robertson, Logan, and Soriano in the pen. If health holds up enough to enable those arms to be in play, and Gardner is back bringing at least some speed and disruption on the basepads and his solid outfield defense, then I think this team has a good shot in the post-season. But A-Rod sitting in that 4-hole is an anchor. No two ways about that. And I don’t think this team is better than Texas and probably not better than Los Angeles with their solid D plus Trumbo, Trout, and Pujols. Given all that, I think getting past the ALCS will be very tough for them. I don’t think the Yankees are as good as their record, reflective as it is of them having absolutely annihilated inter-league competition which they won’t see in the second half. But I think they are at least in the top 3 in the American League. I’m curious to see who makes big runs in the AL in the second half — Chicago with Youkilis, Detroit, Cleveland, a healthier Boston…I think the new wildcard framework will make for great drama down the stretch.

I don’t really care why most SFs are not here – would be a better place if they were. Meanwhile, I am most grateful to ag for keeping things going.

    IronHorse - YF July 9, 2012, 9:37 am
  • I was there in the 80′s too dc…the Yankees had no success until I was in college! But I was in the middle of Braves territory in ’96 so that was fantastic.

I think the SF’s are certainly busy, but being in last place and really struggling the last few years probably makes it no fun to be around the site, reading all of us YF’s celebrate most of the time.

I’m starting to believe in this team. They have been finding ways to win and once Gardner, CC, Pettitte, Aarsdma and Joba get back? Assuming there are no more major injuries??

    We have a shot.

And yes, thanks ag for holding it down.

    krueg July 9, 2012, 9:52 am

Quick poll: do you have a preference that comments paginate after 50/100/200 or no pagination at all? What about comment folding? What about comment threading? The page loads are far snappier now so I am leaning towards no pagination, folding or threading.

    attackgerbil July 9, 2012, 12:40 pm
  • nice job on the new interface ag…yeah, i agree with no pagination if there’s no load time issue…just curious…my last comment didn’t post right away….can’t remember the wording of the message that displayed, but it implied that my comment needed some sort of moderator “approval” before posting…censorship?…my comment was fairly benign, unless there’s an objection to using the acronym “stfu”…hahaha

  • Hi dc, your comment got held for moderation because it had two hyperlinks in it. Any comment with more than one hyperlink gets held for approval. Comments do get run through an IP checker and a language filter that updates against real-time databases to protect against spam; bots send TONS of crap at sites all the time, mostly xanax and penis pill stuff. There is no parsing for profanity.

  • I say no more pages…this is WAY easier.

This new site is great. Everything is faster and far more smoooooooooooooth.

Like ag himself. A smooooooooooooth mother.

  • The Padilla/Tex thing is a joke.

Vinny obviously throws at Tex. They obviously hate each other.

But the racist accusation? That is serious and if un-true? Padilla should be lit up by the fans and media for it. To me, accusing someone of being racist is a very serious charge and not something that should be taken/thrown around lightly.

  • I’m not surprised that Reggie is shooting his mouth off, though that could be costly at this stage of his career. I am really not surprised that he is on the side of the so-called “dilution” of the HOF precisely because he is a self-serving jackass for saying it.

  • No threads, pagination, or other whistles please. This is great just the way it is. It looks great too.

As for our SF brethren, I just remember all too well the shit Paul liked to talk. Remember when Crawford and Lackey were going to be amazing additions? The least he he could do is own up to his Fox News version of fair and balanced. Instead he just disappeared last year when the going got tough. I remember a bunch of YFs sticking through 2003 and 2007, but then we aren’t utter homers.

    James YF July 9, 2012, 1:54 pm
  • I vote for no pagination too AG. And, while we’re at it, no Red Sox Nation too ;)

Biggest surrprise to me re: Sox is how bad Lester and Beckett have been. Lots of otherr things may be explained by injuries, but not that…unlesss they’re hurt of course. And the Yanks’ bench has been huge for them (Chavez, Ibanez, Jones), not to mention Soriano.

  • > shit Paul liked to talk

That is one way to phrase it. But, that is not how I remember it at all. I remember that he was more often than anyone the best author for statistical analysis, direct prose, and historic context. I miss his writing greatly.

  • Your voices are clear. It will stay like this. Thank you dc, James, krueg, ih, Devine, IBM, and anyone I forgot for your feedback.

  • The Yankees fired Reggie.

Not sure what he was thinking saying all that stuff. Oh yeah, he wasn’t.

    krueg July 9, 2012, 2:59 pm
  • Seems more like he has been told, “shut up”, even though they pay him to talk.

    attackgerbil July 9, 2012, 3:42 pm
  • from the article, a source: > “A-Rod doesn’t need the aggravation.”

Wait source, what? YES, he DOES. Aggravate him!

    attackgerbil July 9, 2012, 4:22 pm
  • ARod used to hit pitches designed for him to try and chase low away, put the end of the bat on it, and knock it 400+feet with his leading hand. Some more of that, if all it takes is aggravating.

    attackgerbil July 9, 2012, 4:28 pm
  • To be fair (to the Yanks, not Reggie, I guess), they pay him to talk to, i.e. advise them, not the press. I found what Reggie said to be not really very controversial in content (though must you really spit on Gary Carter’s grave so soon after he passed?), but at the same time almost unbelievable in terms of timing and wisdom…you describe yourself as this guy’s friend, you are employed by the Yankees, and you decide to talk to the press about how his numbers are questionable, etc? Of course his numbers are questionable. If it’s important to you to discuss that fact, there are PLENTY of jobs and places in the sports media world that would welcome. Indeed, one of the few places where it would be dumb to do so is while in the employ of the team for this A-Rod is playing. And you also expect A-Rod to confide in you if/when he struggles? Why, so you can scribble it away for the expose book you’re going to right one day? I’m glad the Yanks slapped him. His connection to them seems the most important thing to him in the world – maybe he’ll think before he spouts off about one of their players. Sorry to sound like a corporate stooge, but taking their money with one hand while throwing dirt on their players with the other is not much more honorable than taking ‘roids to improve performance.

  • “I remember that he was more often than anyone the best author for statistical analysis, direct prose, and historic context. ”

Ah, I wish it were that simple. I remember highly biased gems, like the season previews where the numbers were twisted to support his fandom. Any observations to the contrary (like how much is Crawford’s “defense” really going to matter in Fenway) were scoffed at.

It’s fine. But I think it’s funny that for all the snuff SF and Paul pushed around they don’t show up when times are tough. YF, to his credit, disappeared long before 2009 and never came back.

    James YF July 9, 2012, 6:01 pm
  • Paul’s stats anallysis pushed me to improve my own. And his posts motivatted me to post more on the Yanks. Mind you I never reached close to his mastering of stats nor ever posted as prolifically as some, but I miss his presence for the same reasons you do AG. Having said that, I’m not one to feel that things are somehow better when the Sox anndd Yanks are both doing great. I am more than happy for the Yanks to pound on them and to ebter the ASB with NY in 1st and Boston in last.

    IronHorse - YF July 9, 2012, 6:14 pm
  • Wow – that previous comment was laced with typos. Did I really spell “write” as “right’? Sorry about that…

    IronHorse - YF July 9, 2012, 6:18 pm
  • I’m late getting back into this discussion, but here goes anyway…i don’t ever remember sf, paul, or brad backing away from their pro-sox bias james…it’s difficult to be completely objective when you are so emotionally invested…i understand that and i appreciate that…there’s nothing wrong with it…bias gives energy to the discussions, as long as it’s not blind to the facts…i do miss those guys even though we might have had a few spats here and there, it was generally good-natured and never personal…they have real baseball knowledge and added value to these discussions…i learned a few things from them…even you james, at times, added value to the discussions when you weren’t simply trying to provoke…it’s easy to kick them when their team is not only doing badly, but is performing well below expectations 2 years in a row…i’m wishy-washy on this part, but like IH, i enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing the sox struggle while the yankees are flying high, but i also know how quickly that can turn…i’ve said here that the value in having both teams doing well, fighting for 1st place, at the top of their games, is that the discussion has been much livelier…i don’t blame paul and sf for taking some time away from it…they have lives and other priorities…for me, i choose to spend leisure time on things that make me feel good…yankees winning makes me feel good…hitting myself on the head with a hammer, literally or figuratively, does not feel good…in paul’s case, his posts were very time consuming, and while i often didn’t agree with his presentation, analysis, or conclusions, so what?…it provided rich fodder for discussion, and he never backed away from it…

one more housekeeping issue…ag, we’re not allowed to preview our comments before posting?…i see only a “submit” button…that might help guys who can’t spell, like IH ;)

    dc July 10, 2012, 9:15 am
  • dc, yes, there is no preview function by default. There are plugins that provide that functionality. It’s probably a good idea to test one or two, but we are likely going to nix anything that doesn’t play super nice with mobile browsers.
