Y’All Breed Some Good Pitchers: Angels Sox ALDS Gamer I

Josh Beckett and John Lackey grew up one year apart, separated by about 300 miles and a bright dividing line of culture in Texas known as Interstate 35 — Lackey in the West Texas ag-oil-and-church city of Abilene, Beckett in the megalopolis-swallowed suburb of Spring.

Their moments in the postseason limelight also were separated by one year. Lackey in 2002 became the first rookie in nearly a century to win a Game 7. Beckett in 2003 was named World Series MVP after shutting down the Yankees.

Later this year, we may find their places in the Cy Young Award voting will be just points apart, after both put up dominant numbers in the American League, leading their teams — again — to the postseason.

Tonight, they take the same mound, each tasked with the same goal: Give your team an enormous boost by winning Game 1 of a best-of-five-game series and begin the journey to possibly repeating the glory you captured earlier this decade.

It’s a long way from Texas, but they’ve been here before.

  • As it is, the early start doesn’t help me much either. Two kids to bathe and feed, I’ll be back on the thread around 8pm or so, if I’m lucky!

    SF October 3, 2007, 6:21 pm
  • That Sox lineup looks mighty mighty 1-6.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:22 pm

    j/k!

    GO SOX!

  • I’ll be watching (about) the first half of this game on Gameday, then going home on the subway. Man, that’s gonna be a tense half-hour journey home, most likely…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 6:28 pm
  • Paul, thank you for spelling “y’all” properly. I’m from Texas and anytime someone spells it “ya’ll” (what the hell does that mean?!), I want to scream.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 6:30 pm
  • Anderson looks like he got beat up in a bar fight. I can’t imagine him catching a ball in the outfield, much less hitting one.

  • Where in Texas, Devine?
I’m not a native, but I love living here, and the misspelling of “y’all” is one of my pet peeves.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:35 pm
  • Ya’ll? I’m not even from the South and that makes no sense.

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 6:35 pm
  • That Angels outfield defense was looking pretty bad to start with. Without Anderson at 100 percent, Fenway’s angles could be a lot of fun…

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:37 pm
  • *deep breath* Ok.. Ok.. not gonna vomit.

This should be a fun night.

  • Neither does pronouncing Eldorado El-doh-RAY-doh, but that’s what they do. Christoval: Cr(e)st-OH-vul… Etc. :-P I always give my wife, a native Texan, a hard time.

  • “That Angels outfield defense was looking pretty bad to start with. Without Anderson at 100 percent, Fenway’s angles could be a lot of fun…”
I read a preview earlier that gave the Angels the edge over in Boston in terms of defense. This despite their making 20 more errors and ranking way, way below in DER, according to Dave Pinto.
I really hate that the Angels get so much credit for their D. Figgins is their normal 3B and he sported a nifty .942 FPCT there this season…that alone is just…wow. And I realize there’s more to D then errors, but by every metric they’re just not very good.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:40 pm
  • Ugh. 3-2. Not a good way to start Josh

  • No breaking balls from Beckett. What’s up with that?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:41 pm
  • Pedroia almost stabbed it. Almost.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:41 pm

  • The h-r saves an out on the chopper to 6.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:43 pm

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 6:43 pm
  • Who are these commentators? One sounds like Tony Gwynn, who is fine, but the other guy annoys me.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:44 pm
  • 97mph insie to Vlad. Josh is going right at him.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:44 pm
  • Um, not really. It could be 2-0 right now. THAT would be the worst that could happen. (Knocks on wood).

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:44 pm
  • Calm down, Josh. Calm the frak down. Get your control

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 6:44 pm
  • Figgins isn’t fast. He is FAST.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:45 pm
  • Figgins all the way to third on attempted steals, but two out, so once again, I’ll take the out.
Angels hurting themselves with the hit and run.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:45 pm
  • Well I guess Figgins is planning on doing some running tonight.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:45 pm
  • Jesus. Figgins is a good theif.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • We should have figgins and Elssbury have a footrace during the 7th innign stretch

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • Figgins almost runs into an out at third after Beckett gives him an enormous jump and Vlad smacks a grounder to Lowell.
“Out at first, but runner in scoring position. This is the WORST things that can happen”
C’mon…what? I can think of about 500 worse things that could have happened so far tonight…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • Can the anon please get a name up there?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • Horrible, half-hearted cut by pink-eyed Anderson. Can’t believe he is playing when he can’t even see. Now down 0-2 on the tip.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • Good question. I guess we’ll found out. My guess is he doesn’t.

  • Anon is me. My name wont stick for some reason

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:47 pm
  • Nice, Beckett!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 6:47 pm
  • At least Kirk Gibson could SEE. Why on earth is Popeye Anderson hitting third?

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:47 pm
  • Good to see the old GA showed up tonight. K’d on three pitches.
So after Figgins puts up a nice 6 pitch ab, the next three go down on a combined 8 pitches. Did I mention that I’m glad the Sox don’t play this “scrappy” baseball garbage?

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:48 pm
  • “pink-eyed Anderson”
not to get graphic, but you know what his eye looks sorta like…

    Ric October 3, 2007, 6:48 pm
  • God, my natural instinct as a YF is to root against the Sox, of course, but that means rooting for LAA, and the Yanks, well, we all know the history with them and their stupid monkies and sticks.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:48 pm
  • So, is Garrett Anderson over his pinkeye, or is the bat boy using tongs to pick up his bat?

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 6:49 pm
  • Popeye Anderson…classic.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:49 pm
  • How do the Angels do at throwing otu baserunners? Im thinking we may need to have Lugo and Coco do some running tonight.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:49 pm
  • “pink-eyed Anderson”
Anyone else see Knocked Up? I wonder who pooted on Anderson’s pillow?

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:49 pm
  • Ugh Dustin. Just ugh.

And Youk’s 1-out homer makes me even happier! F*CKING right!

  • YOUK!!!!!!!!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:51 pm

both teams must lose. but that’s not possible, so I’m hoping for a five game series, each extra innings.
Youk says, “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!!”

  • (Just thought I’d add something original there.)

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 6:53 pm
  • Thanks, gerb, I guess a guy can dream. Meanwhile, neither Lackey nor Youk are winning any good-looking contests anytime soon. He peppered that ball, though. I’m afraid the Sox are going to treat Lackey, well, like they did before.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:53 pm
  • Is there a YouTube clip of Lackey’s “F this place” meltdown? I’d love to see that.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:54 pm
  • Im not confident on beatign Lackey yet. He’s too good and so are the Angels. One run wont cut it.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:54 pm
  • Yoooooooook! I admit, I was worried for him to bat 2nd…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 6:54 pm
  • Hahaha, I would, too, actually. I have to imagine Fenway and Yankee Stadium have to be the worst places to play, let alone pitch, as an opposing team.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:55 pm
  • Ortiz with the single!! Loverly.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:55 pm

  • Rob? Are you a Sox fan? if so.. HUSH

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:55 pm
  • Now Papi!
Welcome back to the Fens, John Lackey.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 6:56 pm
  • How Lackey handles this inning will set the tone for the rest of the game. Down 1-0, not bad. If Manny juices one here, though, look out.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:56 pm
  • Manny’s batting line against Lackey is effing sick.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:56 pm
  • yes and ok Dioysus.
    A know…bad mojo.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 6:57 pm
  • Ouch, that must’ve hurt. Lackey is going to melt down early, I can feel it. Unfortunately.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:57 pm
  • Izturis saves a double.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:57 pm
  • MANNY.. another single!
And stupid announcer talkign about makign Cabrera and Manny cleanign their helmets. Jerk,

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:57 pm
  • Manny f*cking rips one down the line but Izturis chips it into the jutting out wall and holds him to a single. Damn did he hit that thing hard.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:57 pm
  • If you’re the Angels, do you start getting a reliever up now, just in case?
    Here comes the Sox’ MVP…

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:58 pm
  • Ouch Mike. Shouldnt have swung at that second strike. Twas a ball

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:58 pm
  • Dammit Lowell.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Up quick 0-2 on Lowell with Papi on second, Manny on first. Then a fly out in foul for 2 away.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Popup. Sucks. We need another run here. None of these LOB-fests…

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Nah, I don’t get anyone up just yet. Lackey’s cofidence has to be on the rocks as it is. Seeing someone getting up might send him over the edge.

    chad October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Now is your time Drew.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Dammit, Mike.
    Now.. Great.. JD.
So who are you? April/Septmeber Drew? Or Rest-Of_the-Year Drew?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Yuck. Ugly, ugly ab by Lowell.
Drew could go a long way towards convincing Boston to forget about the first five months of the season.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 6:59 pm
  • Ach, pop-up, 2 outs with MannyOrtez at 1st and 2nd still.
    C’mon, J.D., a double here erases a season of boos…

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:00 pm
  • Lackey=sloppy.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:00 pm
  • Taking all the way there

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:00 pm
  • How is LA’s middle relief, anyway? If Lackey keeps this up, he won’t last too long. 25-pitch inning, or so. ech.

    chad October 3, 2007, 7:00 pm
  • Drew almost beat it out. Should have taken that pitch though…

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • FRAK!
    Hello Most-Of-The-Year Drew

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • F*cking Drew…that was a closer play then they acted like it was, though…I’d like to see a replay, kinda…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • Lackey goes 3-0 to Drew… He takes a curve for a strike… DAMN, weak groundout.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • Tough play to get Drew at first. Sox get a run, but I can’t believe they didn’t get 3.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • Angles middle releif is their weak spot, chad.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:01 pm
  • As I figured, as it is for most teams.

    chad October 3, 2007, 7:02 pm
  • Considering that he had Lackey 3-1, Drew had a strike to give (and that would have let the runners leave with the pitch). But a lead is a lead, I’ll take it. Lackey definitely rattled.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:02 pm
  • You guys will have him out of there by the 5th, 6th at the absolute latest, and then proceed to violate their pen.

    chad October 3, 2007, 7:03 pm
  • I find myself rooting for the Sox. It’s a very strange and troubling feeling, but I really want to see Angels completely and utterly destroyed. Even if that means a W for Beckett.
So of course they only manage a measly run. Bah, I say!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:03 pm
  • It soooooooooo sucks not being able to watch this live.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:03 pm
  • Devine, you do not get TBS?

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:04 pm
  • “Tough play to get Drew at first. Sox get a run, but I can’t believe they didn’t get 3.”
Funny thing is, most other ballparks, that groundout plates Ortiz. Manny’s liner to 3B would have gone as a double almost anywhere else, and that ball was hit slowly enough that Ortiz would have scored from 3rd.
Fenway giveth, and Fenway taketh away.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:04 pm
  • Oh hell. Beckett has no command.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:04 pm
  • Nice pick, Youk. Gold glove, man.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:05 pm
  • I’m at work, Rob. Not leaving till 8…not home till at least 8:30…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:06 pm
  • Theres a first ptich strike. 98. daaaaamn

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:06 pm
  • Jams Izturis for the first out. Lot of fastballs so far, strike two to Kotchman a (heretofore) rare curve.
If he can get through the order without breaking out many of his secondary pitches, I’d imagine that to be a good thing.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:06 pm
  • Breaking ball now, I predict.
It was, but it was hit foul.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • Dio: deep breaths. There’s still a few games left after this one, you’ve got to pace yourself ;)

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • I wonder how accurate that TBS radar gun is- they have Beckett throwing in the upper 90s. If that’s the case, Beckett could be filthy

    Ayuh - SF October 3, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • Beckett looks awesome right now.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • Out number 2 on another breaker

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:07 pm
  • Dio, where are you getting “no command” from? He’s gotten two strikes on nearly every batter…
No flyball outs so far. Nice.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:08 pm
  • Becketts got speed, sure. But his command hasnt been great.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:08 pm
  • What?! Foul?! MISSED HIS FOOT!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:08 pm
  • Okay, so I decided to make the most of being an irresponsible grad student – headed home at 3:30. Passed a couple sports bars on my way home so I saw Beckett let the first guy on, then saw that he got out of the inning… got home just in time to see the end of the 1st (and a replay of Youk’s HR)… not a bad score to come home to.
(oh, and no worries, I’m going back to lab after the game’s over.)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Foul off the foot? Not really! Where’s REPLAY!!! j/k

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Sox screwed on the “foul” call. Should be out of the inning.
    Replay!!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Boooooooooo umps

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Nice changeup low and away to get Kotchman on a weak grounder to Pedroia.
Really weird play here to Kendrick. Kendrick chops one and Lowell throws him out at first. But Kendrick says it hit his foot…which it clearly did not, and he remains at the plate.
If he gets a hit here I’m going to be fairly upset…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • That definitely missed his foot.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Clean inning for Beckett

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Thank god for GG Coco.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • With the exception of a few pitches, I think Becks looks great so far.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • No harm, no baserunner.

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • I’m not seeing that, Dio. Are you working on the double-reverse jinx?

    Ayuh - SF October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Now a flyout, a weak one, to center. Beckett is looking good, and that last call was definitely bogus.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Neat. Uno, dos, tres.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • 28 pitches through 2 for Beckett. A fine start.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Beckett out of the inning with a catch by Coco, 28 pitches for JB through 2… So far so good.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Beckett’s looked pretty damn good to me. His curves are breaking like mad.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Jackie: what are you studying?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:11 pm
  • Where you go to school, Jackie? I’m sort of starting to look around for graduate programs myself…though if you’re in a lab, odds are our areas of interest are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:11 pm
  • God I hate Dane Cook. The only way this could be worse is if he was partnered with Carlos Mencia.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Josh missed about half a dozen spots so far on the fastball. Watch Teks glove.
Man.. if that blown call had cost us, I was gonna break something.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Agreed, Paul. Josh is pitching incredibly well.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • Tek with a leadoff single.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:13 pm
  • Tek with the hit. Awesome.
AG, I’ll have none of your reverse jinxes here! (Thankfully, Dio will glumly provide the antidote, hehe).

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Dio: watch the Halo’s bats. Beckett may be missing, but so are the Angels.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • I dont mind Dane Cook so much.
    TEK!
Soem of his stand up is amusing. Maybe its jsut sentamentalism. His first CD was a sort of tradition in Americorps and I love my team so much

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Molecular and Cell biology at UC Berkeley. Good times. :)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Paul, I’m trying buddy, I’m trying.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 7:14 pm
  • Bah, Coco.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Oh crap. Stupid DP.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Jackie: awesome, a fellow science geek!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Coco should steal.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • ym – neat! what do you study?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • One of these commentators says Francona told him, “I don’t care if Crisp doesn’t get a hit all series the way he chases down flyballs.”
Really Tito? Do you care if he grounds into 3-pitch doubleplays? Because I kind of do…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Wait.. coc isnt on.. whats wrong with my head?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Lugo keeps the inning alive for Pedroia.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Is Coco really as good in CF as they’re saying? I mean, he’s solid, but as awesome as they make it sound? Really?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Would be even better with Lugo’s hit if Coco hadn’t ground into that DP.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Lugo gets a hit. Now see.. if Coco HADNT hit into that DP we’d have a run now.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Well, the Sox seem to be getting the bat on the ball ok. Too bad about the DP.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Five hits now. One run. *sigh*

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Wow, he looked safe.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Fifth hit off Lackey.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Wait a damn minute…he looked safe

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Nice job by Lugo to shoot a liner into right-center. I’d like to see some running here…
Wow. Wow. Just…holy f*ck. An AWFUL F*CKING call on Lugo at 2nd. Absolute horse sh*t. Complete, total f*cking bullsh*t and it wasn’t even that close.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • There’s your steal attempt. I’m not convinced he was out. FTH.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • There’s the answer to someone asking how Angels do throwing people out.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Completely missed the f*cking tag. Two crappy calls now.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Lugo was NOT out.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • That sucks.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Horrible call on the CS.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • HE WASNT OUT! HE WASNT OUT! KILL THE UMP! DRINK HIS BLOOD!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Wow you guys got robbed on that one.
Otherwise you guys look great! Keep up the good work!!!

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Lugo beat the throw AND the tag. Wow. Completely awful call.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Oh, good, I was wondering if Arte Moreno’s check got to the umpire crew in time. Phew.

    chad October 3, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • I don’t care how fast that tag was…

    walein October 3, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Jackie: Cancer biology at Cornell/Memorial Sloan Kettering.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • “There’s the answer to someone asking how Angels do throwing people out.”
You mean they do an awful job throwing people out but benefit from the second blown call in as many innings?
FWIW, Napoli only threw out %21 of baserunners this season. That’s not good.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • Is Arte paying by the blown call, or does he get a package deal on that one?

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • I’m FURIOUS now. I just broke my vcr remote.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • MLB to umps: “We need your help keeping this series competitive.”
OK, I don’t really believe that. But so far, it’s all Angel calls.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • Thank you, TBS, for cutting to the game with one out already gone in the inning.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • Oh just a fantastic job by the TBS crew. First pitch of the inning is a groundball out to third, which they didn’t bother to show us live because of their commercials.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:21 pm
  • I’ve only done that once this year, Dio. The TB game where they were down in the 9th, got the tying run to 2nd, none out, and didn’t score.
Other games might have made me do the same, but I didn’t have the remote in my hand.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • come on Josh.. get this guy. Please.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • F*ck you TBS.

    LocklandSF October 3, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • “Productive outs” like the two you gave away with Figgins about to steal each time?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • At the risk of beating a dead horse, I will once again whine about the awful cam angles. They didn’t even have a decent shot for that CS!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Manny scared me for a breif second. Im really jumpy.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • “This team goes first to third better then any team in baseball.”
That’s actually true, oddly enough. They are not, however, a good base-stealing team, and just a hair over the break-even success rate.
Reggie Willits is a f*cking pest. He was a thorn in the regular series, too; makes an easy out but still sees seven pitches doing it.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Gentlemen
Step away from your remotes. Get you a nice beer holder to destroy.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Nice eye by Figgins on that high heat.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • BEAUTIFUL strikeout!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Figgins K’s to end the inning. Nice location on that pitch.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • 10 plate appearances, 9 outs. It’s going well so far on the pitching side.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Dinnertime. Ciao!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Nice K. One more blown call against the Sox and Im buying plane tickets and a sledgehammer.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • 9 in a row after a leadoff single. 41 pitches through 3. Some cushion would be fantastic, though…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • K#2.
No runs, 1 hit and just 41 pitches through 3 for Beckett (who generally gets stingier as games go on).

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Beckett looks unhittable. Keep up the good work Josh!!!

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • That was hot. Figgins almost falls over striking out.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • This may have been discussed before, but…. Why the hell are Sox carrying 3 catchers, especially if Wake is off the roster?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • I jsut realized one of the best part of this spread out schedule.
I get to let my stomach settle between games.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:28 pm
  • Hey, let’s all cut TBS a little slack. They’re new at this whole broadcasting-Baseball thing. It’s not like they’ve shown 150+ of a single team’s games every year for the past two decades or anything.

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • TBS back late again from the commercial.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • What the hell Dustin? And what the hell TBS?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Not if the Sox lose, Dio…then you just go to a lower gear of stomach pain for a few days…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • I get to let my stomach settle between games.
It has the opposite effect on me… I end up just having more time to obsess.
Was that actually a first pitch out or did we miss some of the AB again?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • F*cking Pedroia. 3 pitches, two easy outs. God dammit.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • DPed not patient today, apparently.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • YOOOOUUUUUUKKKK!!!
    Leadoff double.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • YOOOOUUUUK!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Not leadoff, Rob. Pedroia popped out on the first pitch. I think he’s nervous. Rookie in the playoffs and all.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Youk’s clearly been resting up well while he was out.

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • I would have punched a hole in my wall if the ump blew THAT one. Youk rips a hanging breaking ball to left for a double.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Youk! I’m not sure he should have tried to stretch that into a double though – thank god for the offline throw.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Youks 2-for-2 with a double. 6 total bases for Kevin in two at bats…

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Youk is ON, it seems. I hope this isn’t like the regular season on fast forward and he just has a super-fast start.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • PAPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got a hold of that. 3-0

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • HOOOOLY FRIG. That was a no-doubter.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • PAPI!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • AAAAAAH F*CKING RIGHTT!! ORTIZ RIPS ONE TO RIGHT!! 3-0!!

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • PAPI!
    3-0 Sox.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • News flash: Red Sox are popular in Boston and New England. Jeez.
John Lackey vs Kevin Youkilis: 2 of the ugliest men in MLB?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Whoa. That 2nd pithc on Manny was a strike? Really?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • that’s putting the lack in lackey

    YF October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • Papi!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • What do the Sox know about Lackey that the rest of the league doesn’t?

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • Lots of material for FJM tonight

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • News flash: Red Sox are popular in Boston and New England. Jeez.
Alas, ym, not everyone can be a PhD. ;)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:33 pm
  • lackey looks to be on the ropes. the sox need to tack on right now.

    sf rod October 3, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • lackey looks like napoleon dynamite. and he’s pitching like him.

    YF October 3, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • Youk and Ortiz are batting 1.000 in the postseason.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:34 pm
  • Manny works a walk.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • And Manny is still as well, with the walk.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • You can tell watching Manny face Lackey that the guy on the mound has absolutely nothing in his repertoire to really fool him. Falls behind 0-2 looking at two decent pitches, fouls off a 3-2, and then works a walk.
Someone needs to tell Lowell and Pedroia to take a pitch…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • Classic Manny at-bat: He goes down 0-2, works it back full, fouls one off, then gets the walk.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:35 pm
  • Yeah… I’m sure this has already been brought up, but is it weird that the Angels started Lackey in Game 1 even though the Sox pwn him?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • you know who’s not popular in new egland?
    …..the french.

    sf rod October 3, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • “Youk and Ortiz are batting 1.000 in the postseason.”
    So’s Julio Lugo. Haha.
Wow. Great baserunning there by Manny to take 2nd on a wild pitch that didn’t really get too far away from the catcher.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • Wow. Manny made it. Count me as surprised.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • You better f*cking call him safe there.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:37 pm
  • Manny with the nice hustle on a wild pitch.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:37 pm
  • 4-0!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Well this has started nicely!!

    SF October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • LOWELL!!!!!
    Manny in!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Lowell strokes a single to score Manny… perhaps could have taken second on the throw home, but doesn’t try.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Just don’t GIDP, okay, Drew?

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • “Yeah… I’m sure this has already been brought up, but is it weird that the Angels started Lackey in Game 1 even though the Sox pwn him?”
I guess teams don’t like to acknowledge when a guy on their staff is consistently dominated by an opponent? I dunno…I wasn’t shocked to see him starting game 1, only because it’d seem a little disrespectful to bench him. Perfectly rational, but the players wouldn’t like it.
Lowell hooks a decent breaking ball that stays a little too far up into CF to drive in Manny. 4-0 Sox.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:38 pm
  • Resign Mike, Theo. Resign him.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • What did you say, Devine?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • This one is over, good night fellas.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • DAMMIT DREW!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • Of course. I like Drew, but man…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • manny’s basepath savy earns a run.

    sf rod October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • C’mon Trisk, we still have a possible Gagne appearance to look forward to!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • J.D.D.P. Bleh. But at 4-0, can’t complain (much).
Lackey at 59 pitches through three (to Beckett’s 41).

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • God dammit Drew…another f*cking DP.
Whatever. Lackey’s at 59 pitches through 3 innings and it’s 4-0 Sox. I’m not gonna sweat the small stuff…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • This one is over, good night fellas.
Quick nix on that jinx, Trisk. Won’t stand for it. This one is hardly over.

    SF October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • Oh, nice one Devine. Look what you did.
Josh – I see your point, but in a five game series the first game is just so extra important… I’m not saying bench him, just maybe have him start game 2.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • Jinx, Josh.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • But Jackie.. if he starts game 2, then you might have him pitch in a tiebreaking Game 5.
I understand why they did what they did. Lackey is thei rbest pitcher. Maybe they were hoping the numbers would even out.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:42 pm
  • Making a mental note of that last inning the next time I hear some “Manny being Manny” nonsense.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:42 pm
  • Man, my stomach is still goign nuts.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:43 pm
  • “Josh – I see your point, but in a five game series the first game is just so extra important… I’m not saying bench him, just maybe have him start game 2.”
Yeah, I agree completely. I just have a feeling that “Traditional Baseball Etiquette” makes that kind of move a non-option, even if it would probably be a good idea.
Technically, the best thing they could have done would have been to start him at home in Game 3. The Sox have handled him pretty well in Cali, too, but not quite at the same level as at Fenway.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:43 pm
  • Just get the next out, Josh. Keep thinking ’bout the next out.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:43 pm
  • Nice, keep going…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • K #3.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • Sorry to see you go, ‘Lando!

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • Ugh. Nasty, nasty 97 mph fastball in to get Cabrera swinging. Looked overpowered.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:44 pm
  • And he handles Vladdy easily on 2 pitches.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Beckett was all inside on Vlad last time (says Gameday), goes outside to start in matchup #2.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Oh yeah, I’ve seen that Game 2/5 point several times over the last week. ;) And it is weird that the Sox legitimately do much better v. Lackey than the rest of the league… by all rights it should even out. Lucky for us it isn’t evening out just yet.
Beckett looking v. good so far too. *knock on wood* I’m happy.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Vlad: Always scary. But he makes an easy out.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Umm…I’m pretty sure Beckett doesn’t throw a slider. His first K looked like it was on a curve, at least to me…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • Still dotn feel safe. Anything can happen. Remember Padres/Rockies?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • Beckett is cruising..

    Rob October 3, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • K!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • K #4.
    1-2-3.
51 pitches and just one baserunner for Beckett through four… Nice.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • 10 pitch inning for beckett. 9 for strikes. dominant stuff early.

    sf rod October 3, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • Buries another changeup down and outside of the zone to K Anderson, again. 6 pitches, two strikeouts for GA. Beckett’s needed just 51 through the first four, he’s got 4 K’s so far, and has now set down 12 in a row since the Figgins single.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Yeah, not to jinx anything (ahem, Trisk) but Beckett’s making these guys look really bad.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Yes, it’s going well so far. Plenty of baseball to play, yadda yadda.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Tek, Crisp, Lugo coming up.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Looong way to go. More runs would be good!

    SF October 3, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • LOL, Devine… well, we have to say something, right?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • Calm down, TBS dude, I wouldn’t call four runs a “pounding”.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • Ahhh so THATS why we have extra catchers.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • PS: Re the 3 catcher thing: Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see a defensive replacement for Tek late in games that are pretty well in hand. It’d help keep him a little more rested and better the odds of his playing every game of the postseason.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • Tek goes down swinging.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • TBS should’ve just let Orsillo call these games, he would probably be less of a homer than these guys.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Sounds like these announcers leave something to be desired…good ol’ postseason, with its nearly-univerally crap announcing. I so wish there were a way to silence all announcers, but still hear the crowd/game noise.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Its aslo so we can picnh run Ellsbury for Tek, Josh.
Ugh. NO SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Crisp: Sox LVP of the game thus far. By a wide margin.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • No, that would be Drew.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • Lackey is hitting the zone a bit more now. He may be settlign down, which could be trouble.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • Tek Ks, Crisp pops out, first-pitch swinging. C’mon, guys, at least take some pitches so the Halos have to burn their pen at the start of the series…

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • “Its aslo so we can picnh run Ellsbury for Tek, Josh.”
    Yeah, I know. That too.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:53 pm
  • No. Crisp. Double play, first pitch pop-up.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:53 pm
  • Ouch. Good curve there.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:53 pm
  • 10 pitch inning against the Sox 7-8-9. Whatever…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:53 pm
  • And Lugo Ks. Lackey finally gets a clean inning.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • Jeez, that was quick.

    SF October 3, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • Pitch counts through four:
    Lackey 70
    Beckett 51

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 7:55 pm
  • I have an idea.
First we surgically alter Ellsbury to look JUST like Crisp. THEN we let Crisp play in the outfield and whens it time to bat we send Ellsbury up in his uniform.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:55 pm
  • Would that make a CrispBerry?

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • First we surgically alter Ellsbury to look JUST like Crisp.
I think female fans would be universally against this.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Angels havent fallen for that high heat out of the zone at all.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Come on Josh…

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Fair enough, Jackie. In that case we alter Crisp to look like Ellsbury

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • …ugh. Can people please stop referring to Hanley Ramirez as a terrific shortstop? He’s a terrific hitter, and an awful fricken shortstop. A future CF if the Fish know what’s good for them.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • Finally. Tough AB.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • Izturis with an 8-pitch popout. Nice battle there.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • Izturis makes Josh throw 8 pitches, but is OUT!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • BEAUTIFUL curve for strike 1.
and one heckuva rip. Foul though.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • Indeed. And what the heck do they mean by teaching prospects the same way at all levels of minors? Doesn’t every organization do this?
FJM truly should have a field day with these bozos.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • Eesh. Kotchman hits a lot of foul balls pretty hard; roped two in his first ab before grounding out to Pedroia and he hit that second one there pretty well down the 1B line.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • aaaand the K.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • Kotchman down on some heat.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • K #5.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • K #5

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • Another niiiiiice inning.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • 15 retired in a row since that lead off hit.

    Max October 3, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Heck yes!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • FJM is gonna be one hell of a read tommorrow indeed, ym.
    first pitch ground out.
Dustin? Can you hear me? I know your leading off the next inning. I know your a rookie…. but please, try to work the count a bit this time

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Thank you, Howie Kendrick, for turning what could have at least been a high pitch-count inning into a normal 13-pitch affair. 15 in a row now, 5 K’s through 5, 64 pitches thrown.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • Kendrick quickly out, 1-2-3.
64 pitches through 5. At this rate, Becks should easily get to the 8th for the handoff to OkiPaps. Or he could go deeper.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:03 pm
  • Note: Nevertheless, the nerves won’t ease even a little until the lead is more than four. Old Sox DNA.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • Top o’ the order. Prime to do more damage.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Ugh…Pedroia having a forgettable postseason debut…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Dusty down quickly, three pitches and a grounder. He’s having trouble tonight.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Dusin down again. Lackey may just have his number.. there wasnt much he coudl do that time.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • DPed ignores Devine, now 0-fer-3.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • Gotta love Beckett sporting an almost Tewksburian ball-strike ratio. 17-47

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • Wait, did I admonish Dustin or something, Hudson?

    Devine October 3, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • TBS guys just mentioned a section of seating put in just for the playoffs – I hadn’t heard anything about that. Where are they?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Good job by Youk to work the count here, whatever the result.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Youks eye.. temporarily missing during the late second half.. appears to have returned.
    Come on Youk.. get on.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Is it just me, or is this game dragging on forever?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Seven-pitch K by Youks.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Ouch. Fair though. It may be a ball normally, but that outside corner has been given to lackey all night.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • That’s bullsh*t. Low strike 3 to Youk, K’s looking. I don’t like it at all.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • No, idiot announcers. It was ALWAYS the knee. ALWAYS

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Seems to be going pretty quickly to me. Through 4.5+ in a little over an hour and a half… that’s pretty average. And isn’t the typical Yankees game four hours long? ;)

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Tizzle BBizzle. Come on, Manny!!!!

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Its been given all night, Josh. It pisses me off every time, but its been consistently called.
    Papi walks.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • anon was me… sorry

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Papi takes his base.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • Jackie, before the season, they put in some “bleacher” style seats on the roof out on the 1st base side, sort of to the right of the Pesky Pole. That may have been what they were referring to, though I didn’t actually hear it.

    Tyrel SF October 3, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • Manny with the homer swing on the first pitch. The pitch went right through the bad, though.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • Manny with a rip. 0-1.
Still not sure abotu Dice-K in Game 2.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • “Its been given all night, Josh. It pisses me off every time, but its been consistently called.”
I’ll take your word, I guess…hadn’t noticed myself.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:11 pm
  • Manny really letting loose, but no contact.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:11 pm
  • Oh yeah, the temporary “Tony C” section. I didn’t think that was a playoffs specific thing though. I feel out of the loop out here on the left coast.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:11 pm
  • okay that was NOT a strike.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Everyone but Dustin is doign well at workign the count.
Manny.. that WAS a strike. You should have swung.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Manny called out on a outside strike.
Too close to not do a defensive swing there.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Pitch counts through five:
    Lackey 91
    Beckett 64
    (Still 4-0 Sox.)

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Or.. not actually.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Manny rung up on a pitch that was called a ball earlier in the at-bat. He’s pissed.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Manny’s pissed. Called out on the low and outside corner, again. That didn’t look low to me, but I didn’t see if it was on the plate or not…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • And home I go. See y’all in a little while…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 8:13 pm
  • Looked outside to me, as well as borderline low. Anyone have Gameday going?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:13 pm
  • Looked like a borderline pitch, and a good pitch at that: very close to take. I imagine Manny was pissed because the 0-1 pitch was identical, if my memory serves, and called a ball.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • I think Reggie Bush should be barred from advertising until his team’s record is closer to .500, at least. And until he actually does something to justify the 2nd or 3rd round pick I spent on him this year…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • Gameday showed it borderline but not low.

    Tom sf October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • SHUT UP announcers! SHUT YOUR FILTHY MOUTHS!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Would be nice if the Halos at least made it somewhat competitive…

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Lackey approaching Giambi levels of sweatiness in the dugout. Or maybe he just poured some water over his head, it’s hard to tell.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Well, TBS has the goods: both Youk and Ramirez called out on technical balls.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • The TBS version of K-Zone says the last pitch to Manny wasn’t really that close to the plate…

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • there you go.. balls.

    Ric October 3, 2007, 8:16 pm
  • Wow. What a pitch.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:16 pm
  • K #6.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • It is impossible to approach Giambi’s level of sweatiness. He’s in a league of his own there.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • WOW! Just.. WOW!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • K #7

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Nasty curve.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • Oh my goodness. What a filthy set of six pitches from Beckett.
I thought Youk had a legit beef last inning, but not Ramirez. I thought Manny was going to get tossed the way he flipped his helmet and bat backward like that.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • K #7.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • Crisp with a sweet snag to end the inning.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • Capped with a sexy catch by Coco. I love this team today. :)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • COCO! WHAT A CATCH!
    GOLD GLOVE!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • Coco!! Another fast inning. This is nice so far.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • Crisp with the nice catch!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • 3 pitches, K number 6. The last one on a slightly mislocated, but still nasty breaking ball.
And Willits is down 0-2, again. Then chases another curve for K number 7. 6 pitches, 2 K’s this inning. Dear God.
Coco with a real nice sliding catch for out number 3. 18 in a row now on 72 pitches. 55 of 72 have been strikes; that’s just over %76. Ridiculous.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Coco with the sliding catch, very quick inning.
You know, if not for that first batter, we’d be watching a no-hitter and going wild. And really, Beckett’s performance is essentially just as exciting. This is a truly stellar outing so far.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Can I say right here how much I hate this mid-game analysis?
Also, why does TBS — a national network with years of experience broadcasting baseball — apparently have fewer cameras than NESN, a regional network?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Frank Thomas really should not give up his day job. He’s terrible in the studio. Vernon Wells was actually quite good last year, I wish they’d bring him back…

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • (Correction: We’d be watching a *perfect game*.)

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:21 pm
  • sox may still get swept…although it looks so far like the angels, not just lackey, are rolling over for them…it’ll make the yankees ultimate ws victory that much sweeter to go through boston… :)

    dc October 3, 2007, 8:21 pm
  • One pitch, one out. Yuck.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Sox trying real hard to keep Lackey in this game as long as possible.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Hehe, Ervin Santana’s up in the pen. Go ahead…bring him in. Please.
Lowell out on 3 pitches. Stop letting him off so damn easy…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Because the Major Networks never seem to broadcast baseball well. I mean.. even ESPN cant compare to Team studios liek NESN

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • drew seeing all curveballs

    Ric October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Santana up for the Halos.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • This game is worth it just for Lackey’s deer-headlights look in the third.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • although it looks so far like the angels, not just lackey, are rolling over for them
yeah, cause teams “roll over” in the playoffs. Come on, dc, this isn’t a Mets game!
    ;-)

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • I’d laugh at Drew’s good fortune, but I think that would have gotten up the middle for a single whether he deflected it or not. Regardless of what the announcers think.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • JD with an infield hit. Everyone’s reached except Coco and Dustin.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Loooong set of signs from Hale there.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Drew on with an infield hit courtesy of Lackey

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Hudson – I agree, I’m only a smidge less excited about Beckett’s performance than I would be if he had a perfect game on the line.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Drew is a massively important player for the Sox this postseason. It would serve us well to send him all the good karma we can. He was a major weightlifter in September, we can’t forget that. Totally played big this last month.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Ouch. 3rd Double Play. Lackey gets another inning of life, makign me furious.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • enough wih the DPs! Sheesh.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Please no close-ups of Lackey…please.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • DPs are killin’ us tonight. Lackey could probably go seven now, and it would have been nice to burn their pen a bit.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Ouch. 3rd Double Play. Lackey gets another inning of life, makign me furious.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Gah. If not for these DPs, this game would be a laugher.
    Pitch count through six:
    Lackey 99
    Beckett 72

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • The DP parade is getting alarmingly long.

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Another f*cking double play. Lackey only at 99 pitches…they’ll probably trot Santana out for the 7th, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Lackey comes back out.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Burning the pen hardly matters Paul. They get a day to rest anyway.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Well, that’s true, but innings are innings, particularly after 162+ games.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • Would someone please drop a hand-grenade on the box where those Dane Cook ads are kept?

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • I haven’t seen this many Sox DPs since the Jim Rice era.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • When’s the last time Beckett got behind a batter? Not that it matters. Cabrera with the groundout.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Beckett falls behind Cabrera 2-1, but gets him on a chopper to short. 19 in a row now.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Vlad looks foolish on the first pitch curve, then again on the 1-1 curve. And then again on the 1-2 curve, but he somehow manages to make contact to stay alive.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • Wow, Guerrero getting fooled badly by Beckett here.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • Vlad fouling and fouling

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • I love that Vlad goes after balls in the dirt… and actually manages to get his bat on them.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • Vlad with a single to left…the streak of retired batters is over.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Guerrero with the hit. Wow. Amazing run there by Beckett.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Oh boy that pisses me off. That 1-2 was the EXACT same pitch he called Youk out on and now it’s a ball. And then Vlad rips a single. F*ck you Gary Darling.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Well, there goes the near-perfect game.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Vlad singles

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Damn. Guerrero is on with a single. Well.. if ANYONE was gonna get a hit.. it’d be him. He is unto a god.
How about we return the DP favor here?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • 19 in a row for Beckett, broken by Vlad (after two close foul tips).

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • Anderson helps Beck out with a pop up.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • Pop up. Out number 2

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • Beckett makes a mistake to Anderson, but he pops it up to Lowell. 2 down.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Pop-out by Anderson, 2 out.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • I figure holding Vlad to a single with Popeye coming up (who promptly pops out) is a victory unto itself.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Y’know, if Becks can go 8, I’d be a lot more comfortable going straight to Paps. I’m a huge Oki fan, but his September was nervous-making…

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:35 pm
  • Wow, Beckett looks young in those clips.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:35 pm
  • Wow, Beckett’s hair was terrible in 2003.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:35 pm
  • 88 pitches through 7 for JB.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • Offense done gone dead. Would love a quick run or two, not so long an inning that Beckett gets cold, though. I’m greedy.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • Let’s say Josh is at 100 pitches through eight, score still 4-0. Go for the shutout?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • Inning over. Sweeeet

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • (I’d normally root for Beckett going for a complete game, but given the rest days in this series, no reason not to go to JP.)

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • I say let him start the inning with Paps ready. Yank him if anyone gets on base.

    Tom sf October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Santana in.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Let’s say Josh is at 100 pitches through eight, score still 4-0. Go for the shutout?
Sure. He comes out with Paps warming, on a short leash. He can throw 110 pitches for sure. Let’s get through eight first, though!

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Ervin “Magic” Santana in relief

    FenSheaParkway October 3, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • I say no, Paul. You want to keep that arm pristine for later games.
Crisp is now the LVP. At least Drew got on.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • I’ve just about had it with Coco Crisp and the first-pitch popups. Get what you can and move on. His defense isn’t THAT good. No one’s is.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • I care little about a CG, just about a win.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • “Let’s say Josh is at 100 pitches through eight, score still 4-0. Go for the shutout?”
It’d be pretty cool, but I don’t think so. They’re gonna want to keep him fresh for the rest of the playoffs…I’d rather avoid any 110-115 pitch affairs, if possible. And with the day off tomorrow, Paps can close back to back home games if he has to.
OK Ervin Santana is not a good pitcher. In fact, he’s god-awful. Please put a few hits together…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Terrible Bunt. Terrible. Dont do that again

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Crisp has made some swell catches tonight, but at 0-for-3 I’m pining for Jacoby.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • (Yes, I know that was the second pitch. Same difference).

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Coco and Lugo are like insanely fast black holes.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • …well, Santana actually looks pretty good right now. Damn.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Lugo goes down looking

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Man we are mouthy tonight.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Did Dustin glue hair clippings for a playoff beard?

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Santana had a great September, IIRC. I was kinda glad to see Scioscia move him into the pen.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Strike out, but a much better at bat by Dustin.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • OK I really hope this isn’t the Dustin Pedroia we see through October. This is about as bad a game as I remember him having…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Blech. This has been a pretty bad showing these last few innings. Absolutely nothing at the plate.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • DPed Ks, 0-for-4 on the night.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • At least the Sox have their best hitters coming up in the bottom of the 8th… Youk/Papi/Manny/Mike.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • Hey Kaplers got a blog/column thingy on boston.com!

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Nah, Pedroia’s had bad-looking 0-for-5 nights before. Then he comes back 3-for-4, and we all forget about it.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • If Crisp comes up again, I sure hope Ellsbury gets an at-bat.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • Kotchman with the first-pitch groundout. Niice.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • “Nah, Pedroia’s had bad-looking 0-for-5 nights before. Then he comes back 3-for-4, and we all forget about it.”
Oh I know…it’s just that this looks more like a Robinson-Cano-bad-day then a Pedroia-bad-day. By which I mean he isn’t seeing many pitches, he’s swinging at crap, and making real quick outs. Probably not a big deal.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Its a good thing (for the process) you have to submit your award votes before the postseason starts. Bad thign for Josh.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Dustin is clearly suffering from Alex Rodriguez’s Syndrome (ARS), sometimes known as Playoff-itis.
(Just kidding, incidentally, A-Rod does just fine in the playoffs and certainly does not need to go out and hit .672 to disprove the idea that he is a choker. Definitely not.)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Is this the same team that played the Yanks? Wow, didn’t even show up..

    Lar October 3, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • They make it sound like pitching few innings is a good thing. Mmmmkay.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Its probably just nerves for Dutin.
    Ick.. that just.. squeezed through.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • A ground ball that both Lowell and Lugo let go by them.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • DP.. please.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • I wonder how this game would’ve gone if the Angels didn’t give up all those stupid h-r outs back in the first.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • Forceout. Two down.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Nice try guys. That was a toughie.

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Contrary to what SF and Jackie think, I was not trying to jinx anyone. I am simply conceeding to the the fact that you guys know your team very well. It was said many times today that Lackey struggles against the Sox and boy is he ever.
I said I was signing off, but I have 10 minutes until Criminal Minds. LOL.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • That was going to be a hard DP to turn.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Well.. clearly bullpen in the 9th.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Holy crap! Moralis looks like somesort of giant ogre

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Uh oh.. Im nervous now

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Hopefully not bullpen in the eighth…

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • ym…
“…I wonder how this game would’ve gone if…”
uh, the angels would’ve sucked worse somehow?…they are obviously a team who’s undermanned, with no heart…they stink…

    dc October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • “I wonder how this game would’ve gone if the Angels didn’t give up all those stupid h-r outs back in the first.”
You really think that made any difference? The Angels aren’t exactly spraying liners all over the place and getting unlucky; nobody is making solid contact, with about three exceptions.
    This announcer is an idiot.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • GREAT pitch!!! K!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • YES!

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • YES! YES! Beautiful K!!! THANK YOU JOSH! STANDING O!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • Beckett with a gem tonight. No need to bring him out for the 9th.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • K #8.
Eight innings, no runs, three baserunners.
    Beautiful outing by Josh.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Dio- when are you NOT nervous?

    Ayuh - SF October 3, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • 8 IP, 3 singles, 8 K’s. Dominant. Paps should be in for the top or the Angels order.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Well, if they had allowed Figgins to actually steal instead of hitting into FCs, they might’ve scored. And if they scored early it would
    a) give them some confidence for the rest of the game
    b) possibly rattle Beckett a bit and/or drive up his pitch count and
    c) give their pitcher a little more wiggle room

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • More runs, please.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • they are obviously a team who’s undermanned, with no heart…they stink…
Come ON. I assume this is tongue-in-cheek. But if it’s not…
Beckett has just pitched beautifully. Yes, the Angels are undermanned, but the Sox scored four off one of the best in the AL, and their own starter just threw 8 flawless innings. Of course, it’s all because the Angels have no heart.
And if the Yankees win, it’ll be because the Indians rolled over, didn’t care, had no gumption. This is utter crap, whichever team you root for.
Oh, and the game isn’t over yet, either.

    SF October 3, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Beckett wasnt getting rattled tonight. He was jsut money.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Beckett looks awesome, as I said earlier, but this offense is almost NL-ish. After Figgins, Cabrera, Vlad and Anderson it’s pretty much ehhhh…I mean Kendrick will be a superstar someday and Kotchman is ok, but who scares you 5-9?
“A little more thunder in the lineup…” Yeah his name is A-Rod and he won’t be able to play for them until 2008.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • I agree, YM. Figgins could have been at third with none or one out, likely would have scored on any hit ball, and could have changed the complexion of the game.
Could have. Maybe not, but thankfully Scioscia was too busy trying to make “productive” outs to worry about scoring runs.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • hey jackie, with all due respect, comparing dustinped with arod is like comparing eli manning with tom brady…if you’re ok with that, so am i…we all know cheating made brady…

    dc October 3, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • I hate that heart crap. What are you gonna tell me next dc? How awesome David Eckstein is?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • //if they had allowed Figgins to actually steal instead of hitting into FCs//
    Figgins was on base ONCE.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Dio, I thought Beckett had no command? ;-)

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • sf, relax, you know i’m kidding…come on man…you guys are kicking butt tonight…sit back and enjoy buddy…i’ll let you know when you don’t deserve to win, and tonight ain’t one of them, even though the angels do suck…. :)

    dc October 3, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • If anyone got lucky in this game, it was the Angels. If the Sox had not hit into three DPs, the lead would likely be a whole lot more than four runs.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Manny missed a fat one there. But I’m glad Santana isn’t in the rotation…I’ll say that…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Well, um, you see Paul….
    Ninja! Vanish!
*throws smoke bomb down. Dissappears in cloud of smoke!*

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • Tough part of the Halo lineup comin’ up.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • Hudson, you miss my point. Yeah, Figgins was on base once, but that once was in the first inning of the game. If he scores there, it could change the complexion of the game. Obviously we’ll never know, but it might’ve. It’s not like I’m trying to belittle Beckett’s effort, he was brilliant.
    *shrug*

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • dc – I’m not sure what you’re getting at (I kinda know what’s going on in the NFL, but I don’t really care very much) but I was being facetious. It would be silly to say that Pedroia sucks in the postseason based on four ABs, and equally silly to say that A-Rod sucks in the postseason.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • No doubt. Beckett was just filthy all night. The way he pitched, Figgins’ lost (potential) run probably wouldn’t have done anything but made the score 4-1 right now.
Here comes Paps, I assume. Lock it down, hand it to Daisuke on Friday.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Not to mention that blown call on Lugo. Who knows how that inning would have ended up going?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Yeah dc, it’s just that the Angles are “undermanned” tonight. It has nothing to do with Beckett’s pitching.

    LocklandSF October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Wow, Becks in there for the shutout.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • good one hudson…
hey josh, when did manny’s vacation end?…did he take some good pictures?…do you guys love him?, hate him?, love him?, hate him?…paul, how ’bout you?….

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Did I mention how much I hate f*cking Dane Cook? I think I did, but it’s worth repeating…

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Oh my. Its Josh

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Wow, Beckett comes out for the 9th. I’m not sure why.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Uh. Why?

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Why is Beckett out there?

    Rob October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Um, I think everyone knows what a complete game is. Silly.
    JACOBY!!!!!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Josh, I was just going to say the SAME thing, but I thought better of it. Glad to know even Sox fans don’t like him. Hack.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • ELLSBURY!!!!!
    What a grab!!

    Rob October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • josh, dane cook is this year’s ben affffllllaaaaccckkkk!!!!!!!!!…..enjoy

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • JACOBY WITH THE DEFENSE!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Beckett looks awesome, as I said earlier, but this offense is almost NL-ish.
How many YFs were thrilled to be missing the Angels? Why now are they NL-ish? Because they are losing a single game to the Sox? This is annoying, the way some YFs have joined this thread and made it as if the Sox are beating up on the KC Royals. If, if if. If what? If Beckett hadn’t pitched like a Cy Young winner?
    (which he is)
This is one game. Tomorrow this series could be 1-1, quite easily, or 2-0 Angels if they come back right now.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Ellsbury makes that defensive replacement pay off right away.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • All right, Beckett! Two more and it’s a wrap.

    Devine October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • DC, I like Manny. Always have. Still do. No change.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Guys, relax…DC was kidding around…
And putting Ellsbury into left looks like the right move. Real nice catch for out number 1. Figgins could easily have had a 3-hit night if not for Crisp and Jacoby.
Cabrera bounces out to third on the first pitch. Thanks O-Cab.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Now one!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • TWO DOWN!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • I guess the Angels aren’t interested in taxing Josh too much tonight ;)

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Ellsbury does make a nice defensive substitution.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • all kidding aside, nice job sox…congrats

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Two down.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • hey jackie, with all due respect, comparing dustinped with arod is like comparing eli manning with tom brady…if you’re ok with that, so am i…we all know cheating made brady…
dc, are you calling Arod a cheater? did I miss something?

    Tyrel SF October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Frak you Vlad.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Vlad is starting to irritate me. Two hits in a row for him.

    Rob October 3, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Little dinky single. That sucks.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • “josh, dane cook is this year’s ben affffllllaaaaccckkkk!!!!!!!!!…..”
Wait, what? He’s not on TV for Boston, he’s on TV for MLB. And according to Bill Simmons, he’s a poser d*ckbag who wore a Yankee cap to Crank Yankers tapings. So there…he’s your problem, not ours. Heh.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • I say you only give him one more baserunner…

    Devine October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • Paging Grady Little….

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • SHUTOUT! AWESOME, JOSH BECKETT!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • GAME! SOX WIN! BECKETT THROWS CG SHUTOUT!

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • by the way, i hate beckett…he’s too good, dammit… :)

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Game!
Beckett, what a game. Awesome. Now it’s Dice’s turn.
    Off to Top Chef!

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Rockin’! Beckett is TEH ACE!!!!!11!!!!!11!!!!

    Devine October 3, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • THREE shutouts in the postseason. That’s simply amazing in this day and age.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • SF you are really hypersensitive…I have been complementing the Sox performance all evening. Even complimented you fans for knowing your team as well as you do when you said that Lackey struggles against the Sox. My comment about the lineup is not a shot at what the Sox have accomplished in anyway. The Angels line up is not strong 5-9, should I lie and say it is? That in no way is taking away from being up 1-0. Relax, not Yankee fan is a antagonistic a-hole.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Hell yeah.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • sorry josh, you got both ‘o them losers: afffllacckkk and cook…sheesh…nice try though, i don’t blame you for trying to leave them on our doorstep….enjoy

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Nicely done.
Congratulations on an excellent game, Sox. I would say that my thirst for Angel blood has been satisfied for now. Back to hatin’ tomorrow!

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Monkey, with all due respect, that’s one of the weakest “mightve” and “wouldves” I’ve ever heard.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Not just you, Trisk – it was the general YF commentary: “rolling over”, “if Figgins had stolen”, “NL-ish”, all combined. That was a stellar effort by Beckett, no qualifications needed. He was awesome.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Hey.. doesnt a certain Yankee Fan have a plate of crow to eat? Didnt a certain YF talk abotu how bad Beckett would be this year?

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Beckett now 4-0, 1.74 ERA in seven postseason games. 12 walks, 55 strikeouts. 37 baserunners in 51.2 innings.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • trisk is right…we’re having fun here…nobody should be sensitive, and you guys are up 1-0…awesome…enjoy the next 24 hours…

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Also, I only called it “annoying”, nothing more Trisk. I don’t think I blew it out of proportion: it was annoying!
    No hard feelings, of course!

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • …if you say , dc. He’s from MA, but check wikipedia: He’s a Yankee fan. Haha.
I like that tonight went exactly like it was supposed to. Beckett pitched well, Lackey pitched poorly at Fenway. No surprises, except for maybe just how good Beckett was.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • It’s 9:00 and the game is over.
    Weird.
What the hell am I supposed to do with the rest of the night all jacked up like this?

    LocklandSF October 3, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Wow, a nearly 600 comment game thread, with and not in a Yanks/Sox game! Well done, everyone. See you all tomorrow for the Yanks, Friday for the Sox.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • But we also have Matt Damon. (Do you know who you’re dealing with? That’s Jason Bourne!)

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • We may have Affleck. But we have Denis Leary which MORE than makes up for it.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Man, Sabathia-Wang. That’s gonna be a good one.
Who you guys like, Cubs or D-Backs? I think the Cubs take it in 4.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • John-yf, that 5-9 would be more than enough to give the yanks some trouble, count your lucky stars you guys drew the indians. Can’t take away this game from Beckett, no way no how… phenomenal phenomenal game from Beckett.
This was a must win in my opinion with Dice-K this friday… I really hope he builds on his last start

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Tough act for Daisuke to follow, that’s for sure. If he even just does 7 IP/3 ER (which would be great), it’ll look like underachieving!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • It’s not a qualification, at least not on my part. The Angels offense 5-9 is not scary, not even a little. But that being said they could have had 5 all-stars batting 5-9 and it wouldn’t have made a difference, Beckett was on.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • No hard feelings of course SF. Enjoy your night, it was a nice win.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Can’t wait for Carmona v. Wang… I think Carmona is going to win, but the Yanks take the series

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Top Chef thread bumped to the top of the site.
Oh, and I don’t see the issue with Affleck. Sure, he’s made some terrible movies, but he’s also married to Jennifer Garner. And he’s liberal. And he’s a pretty earnest fan, he grew up in Cambridge. I’ll take him over K-Fed any day of the week.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • sf knew i was kidding about the angels “giving it up” based on our earlier exchange, but thankfully i ain’t eatin’ no crow, unless it’s about the sox gettin’ swept comment that i made a couple of innings ago…don’t think i ever said that beckett would be bad this year, so i assume that dio is talking about somebody else…

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Is it really all that bad to call LA “NL-ish”? Haven’t baseball writers been saying that all year? Didn’t the TBS guys say that during the game? Isn’t it a pretty standard description of their low-power, speed-and-sacrifice-driven offense (assuming we’re using “NL-ish” in a somewhat outdated way)?
Anyway, that was a pretty ridiculous effort from Beckett. I think I’d prefer it if he would stop pitching that well. Especially if Boston faces NY in the next round.

    KurticusMaximus- YF October 3, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • I think Dio is referring to Nick, who has already eaten so much crow this year re: Beckett he’s got feathers coming out of his ears. I think we can lay off Nick and his Beckett hatred at this point. He’s offered plenty of mea culpas.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • “…But we have Denis Leary…” he said, as if proud of that fact……nice try dio, but can you do better than that?…leary is a tool…

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • To the YFs who want to diminish this stellar win, I ask:
How have the Yankees done against the Angels this year?
Oh, that’s right. You lost six out of nine to them.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Nick, that was it. yes. I blanked on which on it was for a moment.

    Dionysus October 3, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • Is it really all that bad to call LA “NL-ish”?
No, it’s not all that bad. Just that in the context of Beckett’s effort it felt a little demeaning. Again, not a huge deal, just annoying, which isn’t any crime. I’d assume you YFs would feel similarly if we SFs come over tomorrow while Wang is dominating and post all about how damn lucky he is.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • “…What the hell am I supposed to do with the rest of the night all jacked up like this?….”
do what you usually do when your alone and “jacked up” lockland…just don’t share the details with us….eeeewwwww

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • “Can’t take away this game from Beckett, no way no how… phenomenal phenomenal game from Beckett.”
Where did I say anything to take away from Beckett?
“Otherwise you guys look great! Keep up the good work!!!”
“Beckett looks unhittable. Keep up the good work Josh!!!”
“This one is over, good night fellas.”
“Contrary to what SF and Jackie think, I was not trying to jinx anyone. I am simply conceeding to the the fact that you guys know your team very well. It was said many times today that Lackey struggles against the Sox and boy is he ever.”
“Beckett looks awesome, as I said earlier…”
Go ahead Ed, show me where I said that Beckett and the Sox weren’t dominant tonight.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • I really don’t understand why some SFs take everything as a personal insult. I don’t think anyone here discounted Beckett’s effort, certainly I didn’t. There’s no need to get your feathers all fluffed up.

    yankeemonkey October 3, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Lcokland, I plan to calm down wiht a beer and the Cubs-Diamondbacks game.. since I cant possible care about it at all

    Anonymous October 3, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Leary’s a tool? Ever see Rescue Me? Great f*cking show. And he does a ton for the community…
And that video with him and Lenny Clarke when they visited the booth with Remy and Orsillo was just hilarious.

    Josh SF (D1) October 3, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • hudson, relax…beckett was great tonight…screw the other yf’s who want to take away from his performance…right now i’d like him on the yankees…

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • YFs backpedaling, I like it.
Your turn to try to go up 1-0. Let’s go Tribe!

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Agreed with Josh, that Leary visit (2004?) to the booth was one for the ages.

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • yeah josh, he’s a tool…ok, so he’s a solid citizen, still a tool…i saw the booth visit and almost vomited…it wasn’t funny…

    dc October 3, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • My personal favorite Leary moment was that fake MasterCard commercial that came out after the 2004 WS. Genius.
And I reiterate my point about Matt Damon. Smart, down to earth, and he can beat the crap out of anyone with a friggin magazine.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • YFs, please don’t overreact (as some SFs may have already). From my standpoint, I only found the qualifications of the game an annoyance. Honestly, it’s not that big a deal, on that the YFs are right. I don’t want this to spiral downwards, though, so let’s move on. Everyone agrees Beckett was the nuts.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Remind me to never comment in a Sox thread again. Imagine if I was a real d*uche and said negative things, this is unreal. I did nothing but compliment them and point out the Angels 5-9 and this is the result. Amazing.

  • Who’s backpedaling Hudson?

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Trisk – I hope no hard feelings on my jinx comment, I was just playing around.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Absolutely no hard feeling with that comment at all Jackie.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • hudson, are you talking about me when you use the insult “backpedal”…?….my comments tonight have all been in jest or complimentary…let me know please

    Sabathia v. Wang

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Please, John, that’s an overreaction. Certainly you can appreciate the dynamic here. I can’t imagine that the inverse of this wouldn’t happen were Wang dominant and some SFs qualified his efforts with remarks about the Indians, or about BABIP and luck, etc.
This is silly. We want you around these game threads – I for one value your commentary, you know the game better than I do.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • (Top Chef can’t start fast enough, I guess!)

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Trisk, no hard feelings, i’m just jacked up right now… I was realling pulling for beckett on this one for a lot of reasons (I actually am married to a texan who went to highschool with him and claims to have dated him… don’t know how I feel about that, haha)

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • SF, I told you a few posts ago, it’s not a qualification. I am sorry you saw it as such. Beckett was nasty point blank. I guess I should have started a new paragraph? Great win, Beckett pitched great, you’re winning 1-0. Nice job.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:29 pm

  • TBS guys just said Beckett’s shutout was the first by a Sock in the postseason since Luis Tiant!
Amazing that with all the times the Sox made the playoffs since 1975, and the pitchers on those teams, that no one ever pitched a shutout.
Clemens, Hurst, Pedro, Lowe, Schilling. Pretty impressive.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Guys, it’s no big deal. Just know the commenter that’s all. I watched the entire game because I am a baseball fan first. With the exception of last week’s “Pissed Away” comment I think my track record speaks volumes. I love the Yankees, but I love the game of baseball way more.
I feel like I was just on Dr. Phil.

    John - YF (Trisk) October 3, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Got it, Trisk. Point taken.
I just don’t want anyone to think I am upset about the comments. I’m not. Clearly many of us SFs felt a bit needled, even if it wasn’t meant as such. Such is the non-verbal medium we type in.

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • Ok, what jackass just asked the question: “Dude. How bout Beckett, man? Whadja think?” in the press conference with David Ortiz?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • whatever happened to “RAWsox” that guy was derided sooooo much when it looked like the sox were going to collapse and here we are AL East cahamps… what happened to “clownboy”?

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • I for one took no offense and actually agreed with the idea that the Angels did Beckett a favor in the first with the hit-and-run plays.
Hang out with us, Trisk. Come to the dark side.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:35 pm

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:37 pm

  • True enough, Ed.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:38 pm

  • Odds on the first Pete Abe post complaining about the Angels rolling over for the Sox?

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:42 pm

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • I think the Yanks would rather face the sox than the angels because of pure odds

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • A few LoHud gems:
“Beckett’s having a career year. He’s lucky to be on the Sox or he wouldn’t be having one. He is better this year than last but I still think he’s over rated.”
“Do u guys think that tbs should hire micheal kay to do the broadcasting? Hes the best men for the job”
    and
“The one thing that keeps the Yankees from becoming the Mets is that they screen who they let in very carefully.
I cannot imagine that moron Beckett on the Yankees for a second.”

    SF October 3, 2007, 9:48 pm

Also, the Sox clinch on my wedding night, and then spin this gem tonight, the first game of the playoffs…
    What a freaking fantastic week.

    Ed October 3, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • Can you believe that Josh Beckett at age 27 is already one postseason shutout away of tying Christy Mathewson for most all-time?? If he ties or sets that record, it would truly be an accomplishment, considering the era, let alone everything the record itself entails.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • Hey, Brad! Congrats on the wedding! Hope everything went well!

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 10:00 pm

Josh Beckett is unbelievable, and my man-crush has been multiplied significantly!
Overrated is the last term I’d use for him. I’m watching his press conference right now, and loving him more and more with each humble statement.
    I missed you guys!

  • “B-RAW wasn’t derided because the Sox looked like they might collapse. He was derided for his inane, idiotic comments that made the rest of us SFs look bad”
Trust me, you guys look bad all by yourselves. Beckett sucks… until he pitches a gem. Wang is CY, easy… until he sucks again. Pudsada is a HOFer. Dice sucks, dead tired… until he blows away a team on 120 pitches. JD blows… but he does not. Gagne blows. Lugo, Manny, etc., etc., etc.
I’m still convinced this blog is for Yank fans who like to pose as SOX fans to get the cool chicks. The bitching, whining and moaning makes no sense otherwise.

    BostonRAW October 3, 2007, 10:23 pm
  • Hasn’t anyone here been paying attention this year?
The Yanks have zero chance against a dominant leftie like CC because their lineup cannot hit lefties, as the whole damn lineup is comprised of lefties. Well, all except for Ghost-Rod anyway, but he’s not known as a ghost come playoff time for nothing.
Yanks get a big, fat zero tomorrow. Wang gets crushed on the road, as usual.
    Mark it

    BostonRAW October 3, 2007, 10:29 pm
  • I have to say BostonR, that tomorrow is going to be a tough one for the Yankees. But we have 5 lefties in the lineup and all of those are dangerous to any LH pitcher.
I think we’ll be seeing each other soon. :)

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 10:46 pm

    dc October 3, 2007, 10:48 pm

    Ed October 3, 2007, 10:52 pm
  • Wang is a great pitcher, but he’s not cy young quality… he gets the wins, but I’m of the thought that a cy young is suppossed to be more than about wins… Fausto Carmona deserves the cy before wang, just as many wins, better era, whip etc…

    Ed October 3, 2007, 10:55 pm
  • Shorter YFs:
“If it had rained, this would have been a rain-out.”

    Hudson October 3, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • Ed- you’re quite a bit late to this “argument” concerning Wang. None of the regular YFs around here think that Wang should win the Cy this season. Just like the overwhelming majority of the SFs (with a few notable exceptions) give him his due as an excellent pitcher.
BRAW- You are a piece of work. It takes a big man to brag after a team he supports wins a game. It takes a bigger man to put down another team that hasnt played.

    Sam-YF October 3, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • BRAW, I appeal to you directly, person to person, for the sake of the prevailing arguments, please stop insulting Jorge Posada by way of a weak, misdirected pseudo-homonym. It is truly denigrating to everyone when you choose that course to lead into your subsequent analyses.
There are many other avenues to insult and criticize Posada and any other player that you would want to dissect that does not necessitate lowering your argument to a ridiculous, barely locker-room-worthy play-on-words.
    Thank you.

    attackgerbil October 3, 2007, 11:05 pm
  • At the very least, make it “Pissada” – because he actually does pee on his hands to toughen them up.
And seriously, B-Raw, cut it out… you’re just antagonizing everyone here. And worse, the last time you prognosticated doom and gloom for the Yanks and glory for the Sox, we got swept and then lost 2/3. A little humility never hurt anyone.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • So Sam, just who is the CY young pitcher award going to according to you and all the Yankee fans on this site? I’m sure I won’t be surprised by what I see of any defense the (very few) Yankee fans I see here.

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 11:10 pm
  • Pissadda?? Jackie. you are one sick B$%^@

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 11:12 pm
  • Marc,
I love Wang but his numbers arent as good as Lackey, Beckett, or CC this year. Its simple. Im not here to defend YFs or go after SFs just make valid points and talk baseball in as intelligent a manner as possible.

    Sam-YF October 3, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • Thanks Sam. I’m not here defending Wang as much as I don’t see any reason for him to be attacked either.

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 11:15 pm
  • And Sam, I appreciate your answer. Thanks

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 11:16 pm

How about Gag-me and Dick-K, ya inconsistant chumboys?
Damn Yanks. I will call your DH’s posing as positional players anything I damn please, thank you.

    BostonRAW October 3, 2007, 11:27 pm

  • Disengage. It’s not worth it for either side here.

    Paul SF October 3, 2007, 11:30 pm
  • By the way my good lady, do you moderate here?
Ohhh, you called me a “lady”. I see what you did there! I’m a man, so you called me the opposite sex. As an insult. Because I’m not a woman. How remarkably clever!
Most of us on this site respect each others’ opinions, despite our seperate team allegiances. For instance, I respect Ironhorse’s opinion more than most Sox fans’, despite the fact that he roots for the Yankees. That’s called “being objective”, which isn’t easy to do in this Rivalry but we manage to achieve it somewhat often. I know you LoHud crawlers gather together to bash one team, but this site is a nice place to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, intelligently and objectively.
I think I speak for everyone when I say your petty insults only make you look silly. Continue if you wish, but all we’re going to do–both Yanks and Sox fans–is laugh at your idiocy.

    Atheose October 3, 2007, 11:30 pm
  • Yeah, please ignore BRAW. I swear he’s either 8 years old or a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

    Atheose October 3, 2007, 11:31 pm
  • Atheose, I think he was talking to Jackie.

    Sam-YF October 3, 2007, 11:32 pm
  • /shrug, could be. Either way he’s an idiot just trying to antagonize both fans on this site.

    Atheose October 3, 2007, 11:35 pm
  • “Ed- you’re quite a bit late to this “argument” concerning Wang. None of the regular YFs around here think that Wang should win the Cy this season”
Anyone who read that thread written when Wang was running hot for a month would not agree. Wang was, at the time, refered to the frontrunner for CY and far better than Josh because of their 2006 seasons.
That was less than a month ago. LOL

    BostonRAW October 3, 2007, 11:35 pm
  • Yes, definitely joking. (But he really does pee on his hands.)
And on the off chance that the comment was directed at me, no, I’m not a mod – I’m a relative n00b. But I like it here.

    Jackie (SF) October 3, 2007, 11:35 pm
  • “Ohhh, you called me a “lady”. I see what you did there! I’m a man, so you called me the opposite sex. As an insult. Because I’m not a woman. How remarkably clever!”
I have to apologize here. I truly did believe your name represented you as a woman. This was not meant as an insult and for you to jump at that as you did is very assumptive and unproffessional. If I offended you I apologise for that. But I refuse to apologise for anything else that I said here except defending my Yankees.
If that is what offends you tell me. I thought this was a Yankee/Red Sox Forum.

    Marc YF October 3, 2007, 11:46 pm

For extra credit, let’s flip it. Name ONE thread where ARod or Posada is dismissed by ANY of the Sox fan authors on this site as not being a truly caliber player worth respect.
    Waiting…
    Still waiting..
    What? You can’t find it?
    That’s because IT’S NOT HERE.
No one can say that any sponsored thread would tout such a grandiose claim. Normally, I won’t rise to eat chum, but if you are going to troll, you had better be fucking accurate.
I’m not sorry that I am pissed about this continuing ignorant shit.
And by the way, Beckett was brilliant tonight, just to chime in on something actually relevant.

  • nicely put ag…i know things have gone out of control when you, the most objective and even-tempered yfsf participant gets irritated…
what’s bugging me lately is the same thing that seems to be bothering you: some of the non-regulars, and even the irregulars that come here to stir up s—, are starting to dominate the discussion with irrelevant, pointless drivel…heck there was even an off-topic argument about wang perpetrated by these intruders which they wound up having with themselves when no yf would take the bait, which then further deteriorated into insults of posada and arod…it’s out of respect for the real sf regulars on this site that i fight to keep from letting my part in the discussion ooze down to the level of the interlopers…my thanks to [most of] the regulars on both sides for keeping most of these discussions thoughtful, fun, and for me anyway, educational…if i want to get into pi–ing contests, i know where to find sites to do that…i prefer it here…
as if anyone cared, my picks for a few of the major awards…
    cy young: beckett
    roy: pedroia
    mvp: arod
it’s about being objective…i am an unabashed yankee fan [surprise, surprise], so it’s in me to root for them, struggle with them, and defend them from unreasonable criticism…but like many other of you folks, i am a baseball fan too, which allows me to appreciate the job beckett did last night, with just a tiny bit of angst about what it might mean for the yankees should both teams advance…that objectivity also allows me to realize wang is not as good as beckett and papelbon had a better year [again] than mo…that’s just the way it goes sometimes…

    dc October 4, 2007, 7:04 am
  • Ed: Get it straight, no one ever criticized BRAW for saying the Sox would do great, win the division, etc. YFs on this site have acknowledged the same all along. He has been slammed (by SFs and YFs alike) and rightfully so for three reasons:
    1. obnoxious statements about the Yankees, use of profanity, and general a-hoel factor, showing none of the respect that regular YFs and SFs on this site exhibit toward one another. He was never called clownboy until he started acting like one.
    2. almost total ignorance about anything that has happened in this sport before October 2004. Thinking Yogi Berra and Carlton Fisk played in the deadball era (which in fact ended in 1919) and, even more comically, thinking they both dead long ago. Not knowing who Iron Horse was and making inane homophobic insults – managing to expose both his ignorance of the game and all around ingorance in one fell swoop.
    3. Making absurdly confident predictions that more often than not simply don’t come true – Sox sweep yanks; Roger won’t pitch tomorrow; Manny is just resting to play vs. the Yankees; and on and on and on and on.
You are welcome to get in bed with him. You’ll find that there is not a regular on this site, including those who share his Sox fandom, who will respect you (or take you seriously) in the morning.

    IronHorse (yf) October 4, 2007, 8:55 am
  • “no one ever criticized BRAW for saying the Sox would do great, win the division, etc”
That is bull, and you know it. Since I started posting on this ‘All-Yanks, All the Time’ (in that it continously trumpets Yank players but dumps on every SOX, including their FO, farm system and trades) Blog I have stated my opinion openly (and perfectly, I might add:)): The SOX are the best team in baseball, with the best starters and best relief. Their D is the best I have ever seen on a SOX team, and their overall balance supports a strong case for their winning it all. I truly believe the WS title is theirs in 2007.
Oh, and that the Yanks are negligible as a threat because they cannot pitch, which may or may not have to do with the team’s horrid defense, at times. And no, Posada is no help there. Their relief corp being held together by scotch tape and 21 year old’s I withhold judgement on until it is playoff tested.
Them’s is the facts, September stats be damned.
The fact I have been calm in knowing the SOX will win, opposed to the sweat and negativity that permeates this blog, is what you all have a hard time dealing with, no doubt. The mantra here of a SOX player being great until he sucks one game, or sucky until he has a great game, the ‘what have you done for me lately’, is a basis for ridicule, so I ridicule.
“The SOX will win the division” (done)
“The SOX will win the pennant”
“The SOX will win the WS”
Deal with it, YF’s. There’s always next year ;)

    BostonRAW October 4, 2007, 10:26 am
  • lol, So the YF trolls think the YF authors of this site roll over for the Sox fans. And the SF trolls think the SF authors roll over for the Yank fans.
    Guess we’re doing something right!

    Paul SF October 4, 2007, 10:40 am
  • “Their D is the best I have ever seen on a SOX team”
This statement may very well be true given that this guy clearly never saw a baseball game before October 2004.
“I have stated my opinion openly (and perfectly, I might add)”.
This statement reflects the deity-complex of this guy. I mean who else would believe let alone say such a thing about themselves?
To the guy in question: Your team is competing to prove it is the best in baseball this year. You are competing to prove that you are the least informed, most obnoxious, least respected or listened-to blogger on this site.
On the former, you are right, there is always next year for those teams that don’t win that title. On the latter, I doubt anyone here can have much confidence that there is a next year. Some people are destined to hold on to forever the titles that they earn.

If that is not an admittance of bias, as nobody outside NY even believes Pudsada is a good catcher, never mind great, I don’t know what could be.

    Sam-YF October 4, 2007, 11:27 am
  • You will be eating your words about Posada once the MVP voting comes out. He will get more votes than any red sox except maybe Lowell. The whole MLB universe thinks that Posada is a great catcher if your inability to look past a uniform prevents you from seeing that I just feel sorry for you.

    Sam-YF October 4, 2007, 11:29 am
  • Actually, that’s not fair. Posada is a very good offensive catcher, always has been. Just because his pitchers do not appreciate him catching them does not mean he is not ‘good’.
    My apologies.

  • The manglement of this site allowed a ‘Posada is a shoo-in for the HOF’ thread
This Google search proved you wrong in .16 seconds, B-RAW. There was one comment making an argument for Posada as a Hall of Famer. I looked at some numbers and decided that he actually has a very good case based on his career OPS+ as compared to other catchers throughout history (same as Johnny Bench, for the record). There was no “whole thread” and if the idea of Sox fans actually being objective enough to acknowledge great players regardless of the uniform they wear is offensive to you, you are clearly on the wrong site, and I would suggest that you refrain from visiting.

  • I do not know which link you are trying to point out, Paul, because Google is littered with Posada for HOF posts, ALL coming from this blog alone.
This post was well written though. I agree with it 100%:
“”The real question is: Could Varitek even carry Jorge’s jock?”
Oh PUH-LEEZE. The idea that Jorge somehow is way better than Tek is laughable. Sure Tek had a lousy year last year, but it was pretty damned obvious that he was trying to play through injuries all season (first to his ass, then to his knee, IIRC).
Posada gets a slight nod on offense. Tek’s career BA – .269. Posada’s – .270. If Tek didn’t try to come back from knee surgery in September, his career avg would be better than Jorge’s. In terms of power, over 162 games, Tek has averaged 20 HRs, Posada 25. Of course, Posada has had the benefit being surrounded by a much more balanced lineup throughout his entire career, thus seeing better pitches, more opportunities with men on base, etc. Still, I’ll give Jorge a slight edge on offense.
But in regards to defense, it’s not even close. If you think Jorge is anywhere close to Tek’s league, you’ve seriously got to stop drinking the NYC tap water. Jorge is serviceable, and Tek is the man. The stats alone don’t tell how frickin good he is (sort of like Jeter). You have to actually watch the games and see him blocking balls in the dirt, blocking runners from the plate (i.e. Byrnes, Eric), diving for foul balls into the stands and onto batting circles. Moreover, he has the gold standard for preparation and game calling in the modern era.
Nevermind that Tek gives Capn Jetes a run for the money in the department of “intangibles.” And that Tek is the all-time leader in gloves-to-the-faces-of-prissy-HOF-third-basemen.”

    Accurate. Unbiased. Perfect.

Wow, all of them? In all of Google? That’s amazing!
    Accurate. Unbiased. Perfect.
Ok, I think I understand now. This has all been a joke. Good one, B-RAW. You got us.

  • I am starting to see why IH dislike this guy so much. He adds nothing to this site, nothing, other then to piss off a ton of regulars.

  • I honestly don’t get why you people even bother arguing with this guy. It’s like little kids crying to attract attention – if they see that it works, they’ll keep doing it. The only way to stop BRAW’s nonsense is to ignore him. Though heaven knows, it’s hard sometimes…

  • YM, I agree with you 100%, but when he attacks you personally (and he hasn’t done that to me yet) it makes it difficult not to retaliate. I have a toddler and I have learned the harder I yell or laugh, the more he does it, so I get where you are coming from.

  • since when was this blog supposed to be unbiased? Look at the top of the page!

    Sam-YF October 4, 2007, 12:18 pm
  • A statement.
Many times in my life I have carried on ‘smak” with Yank fans, both of us dedicating our opinion to the belittlement of the other. Productive, no. Positive? lol, you cannot be serous.
    Fun though? damn straight.
    But not once,
not a single damn time have I ever engaged in such ‘conversation’ and had a 3rd, 4th or 5th enter imploring the others to ‘disengage’.
That becomes more proof that this is a Yank blog dressed in SOX clothing, as someone who did that in Boston would soon be looking for his front teeth.

  • This is great, good early afternoon reading to prep for tonight.
What makes this awesome is that it started last night, people slept and carried on the argument the next day.
Now this is what I call Actober.

  • The stunningly obvious and irrefutable truth is this, and nothing the blogger-in-question writes can reverse it:
    1. No one respects him – as harshly judged by SFs as by YFs, he has never made an analytical point about either team that is picked up by anyone here. Which leads to…
    2. He doesn’t know a thing about baseball. He repeatedly makes statements that reflect a total ignorance of anything prior to October 2004. “Yogi and Fisk played in the deadball era (and are both dead)…Mussina has a personal catcher and is ‘always’ caught by someone other than Posada…the term ‘Iron Horse’ has nothing to do with baseball…Posada never started an all-star game…”. He goes on to 50 predictions, 48 of which prove wrong, and he holds out the 2 as proof of something.
The last person banned from this site was equally and perhaps even more offensive in his language and tone, but it is inarguable that at least he knew baseball.
    3. He lies. Here is the link to the post he says argued for Posada to be a HoF’er:
    http://yanksfansoxfan.typepad.com/ysfs/2007/09/guest-postin-ir.html
It doesn’t even mention the HoF. That comes up later and even then I and others called his HoF chances “borderline” at best. The same is true of his “Wang-as-shoo-in-Cy-Young”. No one ever said it.
Disdained for both style and ignorance, unquestionably the least knowledgeable fan to regularly visit this site, and a compulsive liar.
Hat’s off to him – it’s really difficult to amass such a universally-agreed-upon reputation in such a short time.
