Yanks Sign Carlos Pena

Newsday is reporting it. Carlos Pena, once a highly touted prospect in the A’s system, is coming to the Bronx. In all likelihood, this ends the Andy Phillips era. And what an era it was! I’m not sure what he did to Torre, but it must have been bad. How else explain Miguel Cairo starting ahead of him on Giambi’s day off last Sunday? In any case, if this means less Cairo at first, then I can’t say it’s a bad signing. Still, I’m not sure it’s something to get excited about. And, again, did Phillips (a cheaper option than Pena) really get a chance at first?

Update: According to the LoHud Yanks blog, Phillips will be starting today in place of Giambi. In other words, Andy’s campaign to stay in pinstripes begins against Johan Santana. The Fates are against you, young man. Best of luck.

  • A very, very bad day for Andy Phillips, if true. The only advantage I can see with Pena is he’s a lefty, and has “proven” power at the ML level. Of course, he’s also proven himself a strikeout machine, and he’s no Mattingly with the glove.

  • For what it’s worth (not much) in 59 abs, Pena’s career OPS vs. Boston: 1.017

  • Haha, Nick:
I was just watching YES and I heard that Cairo was starting at 1B. I started laughing because I figured Phillips was getting shafted (again). He’s DHing though so I guess he’s not done YET. Giambi and Bernie with the night off? Seems like that’s the case. At least Phillips is getting SOME chance…
