YFSF Contest: See the Sox, Hit the Aquarium

Baltimoreaquariumexterior

Our friends at the fantastic National Aquarium in Baltimore have generously offered the readers of YFSF a family pack of 4 tickets to celebrate the coming Sox-O’s series in Charm City next week. Having spent 4 years in Baltimore, I can personally attest to the wonder that is the Aquarium. Tickets go to the first reader who can correctly answer the following question:

Name two Baltimore natives who lost 8 games in their first full seasons pitching for the Red Sox.

  • As someone who lives in VA and has visited Baltimore pretty often, I’m positive one of them is Babe Ruth. Not sure about the other though.

  • I figured out the answer but since I’m a Yankee fan and can’t head down to Baltimore, I’ll refrain from sharing. The second pitcher is rather obscure. Well done on this question.

  • Yeah, I’m scanning baseball reference for pitchers from Baltimore. Too much data to scan! Great question.

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 10:21 am
  • John Dopson? Dopson and Ruth?

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 10:22 am
  • John Dopson and Babe Ruth is correct. I was too late. Good work Atheose.

  • I knew Babe Ruth off the top of my head (there’s a statue of him in front of Camden Yards, and his old house a few blocks away is now a museum) though I must admit I had to search online for Dopson.

  • yes, Ruth was born in Baltimore – another trivia question – what was standing where the outfield now is located (I think there is a special marker – at least there used to be)

  • John Dopson, my all-time LFRS.

    Paul SF May 21, 2008, 11:47 am
  • I’m drawing a total blank this morning, but what does LFRS stand for? Love For Red Sox? Lactating Forest-Recon Scout?

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 12:13 pm
  • Least Favorite Red Sox

    Paul SF May 21, 2008, 12:22 pm
  • Congrats Atheose, you are our winner! Send us your address, so we can pass it along to the folks at the aquarium.

  • Babe Ruth’s father at one point either owned or just bar-tended at a bar where center field is now. I don’t remember there being a special marker, however. The Babe Ruth museum is a few blocks away and is the house he was born in. I think it was actually his aunt’s house and he never really lived there. I used to volunteer at the Museum back in the day.

  • I believe he owned the bar. I think when the park was first built there was a marker for it, but it’s probably been since removed. Poe lived in the neighborhood as well.

  • Poor Poe. Likely killed by Baltimore’s crooked politics.

  • What a fun prize! Congratulations, Atheose!

  • Thanks AG! I’ve been to the aquarium before, but not in about 10 years. It will be a joy to return, as it was fascinating the first time. And my girlfriend’s little sister is a marine biology major, so we’ll love it.
Now I just need to find tickets for the Sox-O’s game and I’ll be set!

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 5:40 pm
  • Oh wait… are the tickets for the aquarium, or the Sox-O’s game? I assumed the tickets were for the aquarium, but now that I re-read it it’s somewhat ambiguous.

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 5:42 pm
  • Okay someone needs to get on here and answer me, cause I’m getting REALLY excited at the prospect of Red Sox tickets!

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 5:51 pm
  • Atheose, you can have both. Just look for the strange and exotic creatures, such as the stunning Papifish

    attackgerbil May 21, 2008, 5:57 pm
  • So the tickets are for the aquarium, and not the game? That’s what I originally thought, but wasn’t sure.
And wow, the likeness is stunning! Though the Papifish wouldn’t be as good as the real thing for hugs.

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 6:00 pm
  • They are for the aquarium, Ath. You’ll have to get the Sox tickets on your own. Trust me, if we had any, we’d be keeping ’em! :-)

    Paul SF May 21, 2008, 6:54 pm
  • I’ll be happy to have them!
I just saw this scroll across the ESPN bar on TV:
“Julian Tavarez accepts AAA contract with Pawtucket Red Sox”
    WTF?

    Atheose May 21, 2008, 6:57 pm
  • Damon comes through. Seeing-eye duck.

    attackgerbil May 21, 2008, 8:14 pm
  • oops.. wrong thread.
