Josh Beckett has been scratched tonight due to a stiff neck, and David Pauley gets the emergency start. Pauley saw action as a starter in Boston in 2006, the results of which are best left buried in history. In three starts in Pawtucket this year, Pauley was 1-1 with 2 earned, 8 ks, and 3 walks in 15 and a third. Beckett is ailing from the same bug that bit Tek, and Amalie Benjamin reports that if Tek isn’t available and should something unfortunate befall Kevin Cash, Dustin Pedroia has volunteered as the emergency backup catcher.
Jered Weaver takes the mound for the AL West-leading Halos and was knocked around in his last two starts against the Royals and the Mariners. Game time is in one hour, lineups follow, comment away.

does anyone else want a blowout by the Sox and then a cramp for Cash so we can see dPod behind the plate? lol
That would pretty much turn around a so far crappy day.
Nearly walks Figgins, but gets the groundout.
That was me.
Typepad sucks. Matthews K’s.
Well, one inning down, we still have a catcher and our pitcher didn’t stink.
ELLSBURY!
thats weird, I played this game on my o8 The show game today and he led that game off with a homer.
I just got in and see PAULEY is pitching? Beckett with a stiff neck? how bad is this?!!! AHHHH PANIC!
Not too bad so far Dio, but it’s only the first inning.
I meant Becketts neck rbf. He’s not going on the DL again is he? I will have to hurl myself out my window.
WTF I feel the same way Dio, I did a double take when I saw him pitching instead. Wow, Youk just made a great play.
Pedroia as a catcher? HEHE that’s a funny mental image.
That was a nice quick inning.
I almost WANT to see Pedroia as catcher, but only if we mic him so we can hear what he’d say to distract teh hitter – because you KNOW he’d talk and you KNOW it’d be hilarious.
OMG, I want to see Pedroia at catcher. Best part: he wouldn’t even have to squat back there!
Well this has gotten lame real quick. I sure didn’t miss David Pauley all last year.
feels like the wheels are coming off.
This is getting ugly…Pauley appears to be in for a short night.
GMJ pops out….Vlad the impaler up
Vlad pops out to 2nd…bases still juiced
Anderson singles to center on the 1st pitch scoring 2. 3-1 Halos
Funny. Just watched the 6/6/6 Yanks-Sox game on YES’s Yankees Classics that Pauley pitched. He looked pretty good but you can’t beat the Melky Catch.
Hunter flies out to left to end the damage.
Weaver strikes out the side….yuk.
and three sox in a row strike out swinging to end the 3rd. just super.
What’s up with the ump squeezing Pauley like crazy?
Sigh. Hey Beckett, thanks a lot for getting a v1agra stuck in your throat. Coulda used you tonight.
Stupid spam filter not letting me type that word.
Yeah the first appearance of the bullpen band this year!
Lugo is the hottest thing going right now… a virtual hitting machine!
Oh, good, here comes Hoolian. Do we get good Hoolian or bad Hoolian?
Pedroia with a double!
Double by Pedroia to lead of the inning…
Fucking Guerrero
YOUUUUUK!!!!!!!!
i’m going to touch myself… tater by Youk
sweetness Youk
Youk > Weaver
wait, is “tater” spelled with two t’s?
It’s amazing we almost traded him for an aging Todd Helton last year.
Tater, as in potato.
ah yes. that makes sense. thank you.
i read the game threads most every game, but rarely comment. mlb gameday and this site are quite the ritual for me.
lugo gets jobbed.
Amazing play by Aybar, but Lugo beat him.
HOLY JACOBY!
ellsbruy homers. the bad call on lugo costs the sox a run.
Holy shit umpire missed that call by two freakin feet!
another HR for Ellsbury??? WOWZERS
Ellsbury!
Ellsbury is a HR machine. Coco who?
Pedroia keeps it going with a single.
Ellsbury has split center field with Coco, and still has 50% more homeruns than Ortiz.
I thought Jacoby doesn’t have power? BWAHAHA
Uh oh. Figgins on. Gut clench.
Ellsbury has the 2nd most steals in the AL? Nice.
Ugh, two on and no outs. Why is Tavarez still out there?
Tavarez shoudla been pulled right after figgins got on. *grumbles*
Okajima out for the 7th. Does he go out for two, and then Papelbon for the 9th? Or do they split the two innings?
Goddamnit, error moves both runners over. Time to bear down and strike two out Oki.
We need Tek back
One more out.
Whew pop-up to Youkilis. One more out Oki and we’re outta trouble.
cash trying to do a little too much. i’m sure jason will be the first face he sees when he gets back to the dugout.
OKI IS A STUD
OKAJIMA!
Jason isnt there, I dont think, sf rod. Globe said somethign about him beign supposed to head hoem to rest before the game started
Though I wouldnt be surprised if Tek sent Cash a video lecture to his cell
thanks for the update. i’m watching the caps flyers game w/ sound and sox game picture in picture w/o sound.
Someone tell me why Timlin is warming!
Casey gets a ground-rule double! Two RISP, let’s pad this lead boys.
Have I mentioned that I LOVE the addition of Casey to this team?
Timlin for the 8th?!?!?! PLEASE pad the lead here boys!
Shit, backwards K for Cash. Why does Francona keep testing Timlin in 1-run situations?
GODDAMNIT, Okajima gives away the lead.
The good news is that Wang just gave up a few hits in the 5th inning of that game, and the Yanks are down 3-2 now.
Timlin coming in? Is Giambi in the house?
Pull Oki NOW please.
now steal second kid. great bunt.
Oh my god that was the greatest drag bunt I’ve ever seen. I LOVE this kid as our leadoff hitter.
So does he steal on the first pitch, or wait one? Uh oh, new pitcher to face Pedroia.
Hey RBF, I’m gunna start screaming “GOD BLESS JACOBY!” from now on.
Woah now, pitch-out on the first pitch. Do they do it again?
Nope, 2-0 count to Pedroia. Jacoby still on first. PLEASE steal now.
Why isn’t Jacoby on 2nd base right now?
Hello all… Exciting game we got going. Sad the Sox could easily have seven runs, just if Guerrerro doesn’t become superman and the ump makes a correct call… Them’s the breaks.Dinger from Pedroia would be nice. :-)
ELLSBURY with the speed ties the game on Pedey’s double!!!
GOD BLESS JACOBY! Pedroia doubles and he scores from first, DESPITE turning back to first to make sure the ball wasn’t caught. Amazing.
Speed is a game changer.
DESTROYA!!
JACOBY!!!
FARM!!!
Hey Paul, great time to tune in! Hopefully Papelbon won’t scare us in the 9th.
This is like the World Series.
Combined Ellsdroia line: 7 for 10, 2 HR, 3 2B, 4 R, 3 RBI
Heh, Manny avoids the DP. Two on for Youks. Insurance, please.
Is anyone watching for real? Did Manny actually run out a ball that he thought was a gimme double play?
No good ever comes from Youkilis swinging at the first pitch…
Paps looks to be in fine form tonight. Three pitches for out No. 1/K No. 1.
One.
Two!
Papelbon with two K’s!

another great win for the Sox tonite
It’s Tito’s birthday? Nice!
Dirty-freakin-water.
Papelbon is unfair to batters. 100mph? Dear god.
Beautiful dirty water – we stole one today, with Pauley starting.
And as usual… I LOVE THE KIDS.
That can’t be right, Paul.
If it is.. just.. dear gods and heaven.
Jacoby.
Pedroia.
Papelbon.
Youkilis.
This, Nation, is your Farm at work.
it’s probably time to add jed to that list too. don’t forget clay and mdc. masterson is coming soon. oh it’s good to be young.
I was mostly just refering to the Farm’s contributions to this particular game, sf rod.
But, yes, MDC, Clay and even Lester (who’s improving) deserve to be on the list.
Lowrie I wont add until he gets a bit more playing time. As for Masterson, he sure looks good right now.. so does Hansen.. even Bard is shaping up as a releiver. And then we’ll get guys liek Anderson, Kalish, Hagadone.. goody goody gumdrops!
Anyoen remember when our farm was one of the worst, most desolate tracts in the game? Yeah. Theo rules.
Nine total bases for Jacoby Ellsbury tonight.
Seriously, has there been a Sox rookie with this much electricity since Fred Lynn?
I can’t believe we won that game.
Jacoby’s speed changes ballgames. When he was on first base late in the game Pedroia got to a 2-0 count thanks to the pitcher trying to hard to keep Ellsbury off 2nd base. Having him on base in front of the heavy hitters is going to be a joy to see for years to come.
Also, Pedroia and Ellsbury went 7 for 10. Seven hits from the two guys batting in front of Ortiz and Manny. It’s tough to lose ballgames when that happens, even when your ace pitcher gets scratched at the last minute.
By the way, it’s a damn shame Okajima gets a Blown Save for his solo homerun given up in the 8th, especially after he got out of that horrible situation in the 7th.
