A Lump Of Cole In Your (Red) Stocking: Sox-Phillies Gamer II

“I believe we’re destined to play each other in the World Series. We can compete with them (the Red Sox) any day of the week,” said Cole Hamels, after last night’s win. I suppose that was more of a self-promotional and therefore incidental compliment to the Sox — whom they don’t have to play any day of the week, just three days in one week — and I bet the Cubs might have something to say about it, as they have the best record, rc/g and ra/g of any team on the Senior Circuit.

Interleague play continues at Citizens Bank Park as Jamie Moyer, who was chided by Phillies’ ownership partner Bill Giles to pitch more like Mike Mussina (at least that’s what I recall), takes the mound for Philadelphia. Giles’ motivational techniques have paid dividends as the Phillies have not lost a Moyer start since May tenth, a span of 40 innings spread over six games in which he has allowed 14 runs. Jon Lester gets the ball for the Sox; he’s thrown 18 1/3 innings over his last three starts leading to three Sox victories. He allowed six runs during that span, and has yet to give up more than three runs in a game this season after his opening game.

J.D. Drew and Ryan Howard are two of the hottest hitters in the game at this moment, and they show off their atom-splitting bats in about an hour. Lineups follow, comment away.

  • Lugo leading off? My stomach hurts.

  • Terry, Terry, Terry. *sigh*
Also, Cole Hamels might remember how the Colorado Rockies plastered the Sox in winning two out of three during last year’s interleague play. (I think about this because I firmly believe the Sox will lose this series, if not get swept, and it helps me be OK about it).

  • Jamie Moyer is, I believe (I haven’t checked), the only major leaguer who is older than me.

  • arg. I haste gameday. How does Manny single on a ground ball to Rollins? Was that really an error?

  • I do like the 23 pitches out of Moyer in the first.

  • coco’s making it hard for us to hang on to him. if he’s only around for one more month, he’ll be missed.

  • Heh, Lugo is put in the leadoff spot, and he starts walking like he’s Kevin Youkilis…

  • Moyer with 57 pitches through 2.

  • Covelli with a stolen base.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Jon Lester doesn’t have anything to show for it, but he’s seen 14 pitches in three at-bats. Bully for him.
Now Lugo drives in Crisp, who got to third by stealing twice. Good insurance there.

  • Lester is pitching great tonight.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • … He says just as Lester give up back-to-back singles.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • Rudy Seanez on to pitch for Philly.
Please, Rudy. Please, give us a little of what you gave Boston opponents in 2005.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Casey steals second. That’s five for the RS tonight.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:36 pm
  • This would be a good time for Loogie to get his first homerof the year.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • Second five-steal game of the year, right? And they never even had one before this season, if I remember right.
Of all the middle relievers the Red Sox have had over the past three years, Seanez is not the one I would have picked to still be pitching.

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Loogie Ks. That 10 LOBs for Boston tonight. Ick. This game could be over.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • anyone else ready to kill the 2 corporate 50 something d-bags heckling behind home plate all nite?

    sf rod June 17, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Rod, it’s Philadelphia. What do you expect?

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Okajimer in. He pitched a clean inning last night with Philly way ahead. Can he do it again?

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • WHY is Okajima pitching this inning? Give us Hansen! Delcarmen! Anybodyyyyy.

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • I feel bad for losing trust in Okie this quickly, but he has just crapped the bed so badly in close games, it seems he needs to be relegated to mop-up work for a while. Him having already pitched last night also makes me wonder why he needs to be in here tonight.
Of course, he strikes out the first batter. I guess I’ll just keep on bad-mouthing him…

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • Double by Rollins. With the meat of the lineup upcoming. Ughhh

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • Tito, Oki better be on a short leash here. Lester pitched too well to crap this one away.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:46 pm
  • Paps is up as Victorino lines out.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • Home plate ump has sucked all night, against both teams. Calls a strike Ball 3 there. Now the foul ball runs the count full, two down, runner on 3rd.

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:49 pm
  • Strikes him out!!!!!

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:50 pm
  • Ellsbury steals his 34th on a pitch out. Amazing. Also amazing: SIX steals this ballgame!

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 9:59 pm
  • Ellsbury caught stealing third. A little overanxious on that one.

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 10:00 pm
  • When was the last time the Red Sox ATTEMPTED to steal third three times in a game?

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 10:06 pm
  • That’s 101 Ks for Howard on the season, four tonight.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 10:08 pm
  • Utley, Howard, Burrell, 8 Ks among them tonight.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 10:09 pm
  • Cs by 14, 3 mins left in 1st half.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 10:10 pm
  • Papelbon Ks the side to end it. Nice job by the Sox’ pitchers tonight, especially Lester, who is looking fantastic. 3.18 ERA now.

    Paul SF June 17, 2008, 10:11 pm
  • Werth Ks, that’s the side and the game. GREAT outing by Paps (3 Ks). Very well pitched game by Lester, Oki, Paps. 7th shutout for RS on the season.

    I'mBillMcNeal June 17, 2008, 10:12 pm
  • On to the Cs.
