Achoo! Yanks-A’s Gamer I

The Captain is back in the lineup after his cough due to cold.  Javier Vazquez is back on the mound after his two hacks due to coldest.  Lineups to follow, comment away.

p.s.: I have a wager on this series with my close friend and Athletics supporter, AK. It's on, big guy.

update 5:28pm:  It's a balmy 56 degrees and windy in Oakland.  Lineups added.

Gio Gonzalez is off to the best start of his young career.  He has given up four runs, 12 hits (one long ball) and and walked five while striking out 11 in just shy of 11 innings over his first two outings.  He takes the mound against the Bombers for the second time in his career, having pitched a 6.2 inning, two-hit gem against New York last July.

Athletics Nation is a good place to get up to speed on things Green and Gold… and SF Gate's Drumbeat

NY lineup from LoHud:

Derek Jeter SS
Nick Johnson DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson CF
Brett Gardner LF

back-to-back 2 out walks to ARod and Cano…bases loaded with 2 outs for Hip Hip Grandslam!!!!!
Dude had 2 outs on 5 pitches and is now on 24…rowdy.

CRAZY PLAY AT FIRST…HIP HIP SAFE…RUN SCORES…1-0!!!!!
Hard grounder eats up the first baseman and then he overruns the ball and everyone is safe. (I wonder if this dude is one of the 14 first baseman better than Tex???)

Just as I finished that, he gives up a 2 run blast. That extra runner mattered. 6-3, and plenty of baseball left, but it’s late for me, so good night!

I’m really loving this team. Granderson might be my favorite Yankee now. I love almost everything about his game. The Ks are a bit high, but then we can see why they traded Jackson with his league leading strikeouts. My favorite non-story will be whether Granderson can enter the 30-30 club and perhaps approach 40-40. Damn, I’m old. I remember when that used to be a big deal.
When the biggest problem is Jome Run Javy then there’s a lot to like. Of course, it’s easy to love a team that’s first in the league in runs allowed and first in runs scored. The best part though is the fact that there’s very little in the way of dumb decisions to infuriate. No Miguel Cairo’s or Sidney Ponson’s as far as the eye can see. They’ve got bench depth, bullpen depth, minors depth. Montero is ready any time they need him.
