John, according to many opinions I have read as of late, there’s little difference between you, him, a ten-year-old with a clipboard, and a bag of hammers.

Russell, are you serious? Do you think that saying a simple adjective like “fucking” is that egregious of an offense? It’s just a word, and in that context, means nothing more than he was pissed at a stupid, inflammatory, leading question. So maybe it isn’t gracious, but, even as a father, this one doesn’t get under my skin.
I was with you, Trisk. I don’t know how Tito can put Ells in after Coco’s game two AND his defense, but then again Coco’s done zippo since then.

I almost thought that Tito was going to hang with Coco. Not sure I agree with benching Coco for Jacoby, but hopefully it provides a spark to the rest of the lineup.
I agree with the Ellsbury move. Crisp cost the Sox runs in a 2-1 game in Game 5.
SF, why do you cite Game 2?
He grounded a single into right field, stole a base and scored in the third, lined out in the fourth, flied out in the sixth, struck out in the ninth, and grounded another single into right in the 11th.
That’s not very impressive to me.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 8:17 pm

Pedroia with a high chopper that goes to the shortstop side of second, Cabrera with a barehanded snag that he throws to 1st. Pedroia safe by a step or two.
I fully expected after Lowell couldn’t drive in the run by swinging at the first pitch that the Sox would get no more than one run if they were lucky. J.D. Drew… Just… Wow.
Holy shit, Drew. Nothing could have made me happier there… I wanted so badly to like him this season.

John - YF (Trisk)October 20, 2007, 8:59 pm
Drew had a 118 OPS+ in the second half. I don’t think he’s going to be a problem for next season — particularly when you consider his offensive upturn coincides with the health of his son.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:00 pm
He looked good except for one pitch that Sizemore rocked just foul, Trisk.
Knock on wood.
I knocked on wood! You can’t blame me for that one!
4-1.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:01 pm
VMart takes one for a ride down the right field line.
Ok Curt, we spotted you 4 runs. I don’t want to have to hear how you missed with some pitches or bad mechanics to explain blowing a lead.
Well, to be fair, he didn’t say all that. His “Champaigne tastes the same” quote isn’t all that bad. The columnist, however, is clearly a hack (and either doesn’t understand the difference between “its” and “it’s” or Fox doesn’t).
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:07 pm
Well, Paul SF, what the players don’t know won’t hurt ’em. :)
Haha, no doubt, BD. Still, it’s not entirely fair to Garko, and I’m kind of a stickler about stuff like that.
Quote marks serve a purpose, though I understand ballplayers aren’t necessarily grammar experts.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:10 pm
Lugo K’s…worthless AB with the exception of making Carmona throwing pitches.
Youk with another infield hit that allows Pedroia to slide headfirst into 3rd. Peralta may not have been able to get him, looked off balance after he fielded it.
Ooh, bad luck from Papi. Hits it on the nose, but right into the shift for the DP. Too bad. Woulda liked to have seen another run…
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:17 pm
Farrell is very highly regarded, I think Gammons said he thinks he may be the first guy to be both a manager and a GM, whatever that’s worth.
SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:17 pm
11th DP of the series for us. Papi grounds it back up the middle.
Carmona now at 52 pitches.
Lugo 4
Ped 7
Youk 4
Papi 1
That would be the number of pitches each guy took in thier AB’s. With Carmona’s troubles so far that first pitch must have looked just huge to Papi.
John – I think LaRussa has signed with St. Louis (?) so no worries there; I wouldn’t mind a guy with a knowledge of pitching (or with working with younger guys) since that seems to be the direction we want to go.
Gotta give Pedroia some credit – if he couldn’t get it with that effort, no one would.

‘diminished stuff’

SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:21 pm
How come they never talk about DP’s when the Sox could use one?
You guys may have already talked about this but just glancing at the numbers and Trot has minimal success against Schilling. Was he put in there for sentimental reasons?
.222 for Trot.
.000 for Franklin G. (2 AB’s)
Just curious.
John - YF (Trisk)October 20, 2007, 9:22 pm
BD – be happy – that would probably mean jinxing any DP
RobOctober 20, 2007, 9:22 pm
*sigh* Two line drive hits. Not good.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:22 pm
SF, definitely not. Just tired of them repeating it every inning..and two on, no out. ugh
Paul SF – I agree I was like “is it going to go out?” when I saw the hit – and then they cut to where the ball was going and I was surprised.
RobOctober 20, 2007, 9:25 pm
If the Sox make it to the Series, I hope they give the ball to Lester instead of Wake to start.
Meanwhile, in the game the Sox have to win to get to the game they have to win to even make that a consideration, Schilling is falling behind…
Huge outs after getting the first two runners on. Phew. Based on the flow of baseball, Schilling could breeze through the rest of the game, having escaped his first serious jam.
This is what I hope, at any rate.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 9:30 pm
I do hope you were knocking on something, Paul SF…
Interesting what the postseason does. Sabathia and Carmona were nearly unhittable against Boston during the regular season. Beckett was good, against Cleveland and everyone else, but not THIS good. Curious…
Record for RBI in an LCS game is 6, held by Damon (2004 ALCS), Aramis Ramirez (2003 NLCS) and Will Clark (1989 NLCS).
Postseason record is seven, held by four people, inluding Mo Vaughn (1998), John Valentin (1999) and Troy O’Leary (1999) — all against the Indians in ALDS play.
I know I am getting a little ahead of myself here. The game is still early, but if things stay the same, then tomorrow night we need to make sure we have a very short hook for Dice.
tomorrow night we need to make sure we have a very short hook for Dice.
I’d counter with “we need to make sure we score about forty six runs in the first four innings”…
Intentionally put his head in front of the throw? now that has to be one of the stupidest things I have heard. Do you really think he’s arguing that, McCarver?
Youk with a shot off the wall. Lugo scores, Youk gets caught in between 1st and 2nd, ball thrown back to 1st to catch Youk, which hits him in the head, allows Pedroia to score.
Odd…very odd.
Does not look like he tried to head it like a soccer ball.
Perez gone.
Wow, left the restaurant (with big screen t.v.) with my girlfriend (20 minute drive), it was 4-1, it’s now 10-1… they are putting a hitting clinic on… and p.s. The Ellsbury move has already paid dividends!!!!!!!!!
EdOctober 20, 2007, 9:57 pm
A Manny moon shot would be a perfect cap to the inning.

10 runs, and Manny, Ortiz, and Lowell are hitless in the game.
Tom sfOctober 20, 2007, 10:00 pm
Definitely should have been a foul ball, but it puts Youk in scoring position.
Strange that Ortiz has swung — ill advisedly — at the first pitch twice now. Almost had two double plays.

Sox with a strong, strong pimp hand that inning knock in 6 runs.
For the record, the Sox have not blown a lead larger than five runs this season.
But we’ve seen a lot of things this postseason that we never saw from April to September…
I heard that Paul, still gotta pitch and get through this

Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:06 pm
Good one, Tom.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:07 pm
Kudos to Fox/MLB for doing these managerial interviews mid-inning and not while there’s action on the field.
I’m guessing MLB enacted a new policy after complaints from managers…
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:08 pm
Good point, Paul SF…I’m just nervous and excited, is all..
No, BD. Not on a 40-year-old arm.
You’ve got Beckett, Lester and Wakefield all likely available, plus Papelbon (assuming he won’t be needed tonight) for 2 IP if necessary.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:11 pm
That was an 11 pitch inning for Schilling.
Now at 51
I think with Dice K, Beckett (2 innings?), Lester, Wakefield, Okajima, MDC, Paps we should be o.k. without Schilling, I think we should try to get as many innings off him tonight as we can, preserve the bullpen aces for tommorow show we can afford to have Dice K on a short SHORT hook
EdOctober 20, 2007, 10:12 pm
True, Paul SF..and hey, Dice-K could surprise us…he wasn’t great the other day, but I thought he pitched, well, okay enough to maybe win..
Rob SF, the nickname is, I think, not the problem..it’s that so called mascot of theirs…i’m not PC, but it just seems to me a bit, well, bad..but if tribes don’t complain, hey, fine by me I guess
I’m not one to pretend I know how it feels to be a minority, i’m a white male, but the Indians’ logo is borderline obnoxious (the whole happy red man thing), but i’m glad it doesn’t offend him!
EdOctober 20, 2007, 10:20 pm
Me, I’m Polish…not like there are any jokes about my people or anything. :P
I’m with ya, BD. Aside from the Redskins and the Chief Wahoo logo, I’m usually fine with those kinds of nicknames. I mean, we’ve got Cowboys and Warriors and whatnot — groups of people known for their courage and bravery and ferocity. Not an insult to have Indians in there, unless you object to the misnaming of native people as “Indians.”
But, yeah, Chief Wahoo is ridiculously offensive. I’d be embarrased to wear it as an Indians fan.
How about the Texas Tech Red Raiders?
I think Casey Blake might be me in another life. Full beard, likes Metallica and “One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest”…
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:24 pm
Red Raiders = bad
Seminoles = cool
Tom sfOctober 20, 2007, 10:24 pm
I only just thought of it, BD. The NCAA cracked down hard on Indian-related nicknames, so it might mean something different.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:25 pm
how about those Sizemore highlights? Unbelievable stuff!
EdOctober 20, 2007, 10:25 pm
Paul SF, what about those guys wearing the face paint and made up to look like Cheif Wahoo? Again, not trying to be PC, but seemed like blackface to me
BD, I agree the picture of the logo is questionable by today’s standards. I watched a wierd video this week that I saw through CNN Extra Mustard where a guy was trying to say that the Tribe’s logo has a naked woman hidden in it. They were saying the nose looked like a naked woman from behind.
Here is the link: http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/10/17/is-there-a-naked-lady-on-chief-wahoos-nose/
Hey, I don’t care about the school, I just like their name and the whole indian on the horse throwing down the spear, endorsed by the Seminole Nation.
Tom sfOctober 20, 2007, 10:29 pm
Apparently no one knows how the Red Raiders got their name. Maybe that’s why they continue with it.
The NCAA has gone way overboard, even outlawing the name “Indians” even if the mascot and logo weren’t offensive. Silly.
You still see some pretty offensive Indian mascots in high school sports though.
Paul SFOctober 20, 2007, 10:30 pm
If Schilling can get through 1 more inning unscathed, he deserves an ovation. I didn’t have much confidence in him tonight.
Tom sfOctober 20, 2007, 10:30 pm
As this game is pretty well in hand (*knock*), I’m gonna take off. The laptop is too warm in my lap.
The second it looks like the Sox might be losing it, though, and I’ll return.

The also had scooter the baseball and a glowing puck. Not the brightest minds at Fox.
I for one would love the fatman to come in tommorow, what a joke, he’s had a horrible postseason and fox is still acting like he’s some savior, the Indians would be better without him coming in relief, especially if it’s a high stress game at fenway
EdOctober 20, 2007, 11:06 pm
Is there anything else on youtube of Sox punks doing embarrassing things I can watch to distract myself from this sad game? Like Youkilis having trouble finding Massachusetts on a map or something?
ESPN(2) analysts just said if they’d polled Sox nation prior to tonight we would have overwhelmingly voted to replace him with Kielty.
Does everyone agree? I know we now have the benefit of hindsight, but I was never clamoring to replace Drew, just Coco.
Jackie (SF)October 20, 2007, 11:54 pm
Nah, Jackie…I really don’t see Kielty as a viable replacement…I wasn’t a fan, but sort of a ‘whose better’ feeling..
Yeah, that was my feeling too. I didn’t feel like Drew was doing all that great, but at the same time I didn’t think Kielty would be any better.
Jackie (SF)October 20, 2007, 11:56 pm
Back from watching the games with friends and a celebratory bonfire…
(1) J.D. Drew finally becomes a true Red Sox player. Welcome, dude.
(2) While one has to be a bit nervous with DiceK having struggled so far in the postseason, and Westbrook mysteriously mowing the Sox down in his last outing, the good news is the Sox have Lester, Timlin, Oki, Paps and even Wakes available if DM is having “one of those nights.” And we might even see a spot relief appearance by Beckett (though that seems unlikely to me, even in a big spot).
So while I expect debate running up to gametime will focus largely on pitching, it strikes me that the Sox have plenty to work with. I’m more wondering which set of Sox bats will show up against Westbrook…
Sox v. Rox really needs to happen.
HudsonOctober 21, 2007, 1:43 am
I think Becks might actually be more likely than Wake or Lester. Tomorrow, IIRC, would be his normal side session day, and it’s absolutely do-or-die. None of Wake’s “will he or won’t he” or Lester’s “4 walks OR 4 Ks in 3 IP” stuff.
And yeah, I think that’s ESPN with some of its signature thought vomit. Crisp NEEDED to be replaced. Drew had at least gotten some hits to that point, and it’d be like replacing a slumping Lugo with Cora. As much as some of Lugo’s ABs have pissed me off this series, I know he’s a superior hitter to Cora.

Cabrera down.
How many times this evening will we hear: “This is not the same Curt Schilling”?
Haffner continues to be a big gaping hole in the Indians lineup…
STRIKEOUT!! Woooo, good job, Curt!
Hafner strikes out to end the inning. Curt looks good that inning. Only bad pitch may have been the long foul to Sizemore.
Paul SF – You will hear it at least 30 more times than you would like
Keep the graphic description coming – I am in the midst of dinner and cooking, can’t really watch yet…
THX!
Relatively speaking, Hafner’s been a hole in their lineup all season. I’d be worried as a Tribe fan. He was below average in June, July and August…
Schilling with 11 pitchs that inning.
Lugo should be banned for life from announcing the lineup.
We need Pedroia to find himself at the plate tonight. He needs to be a little more productive to help set the table.
Pedroia beats out the infield single.
Pedroia with a high chopper that goes to the shortstop side of second, Cabrera with a barehanded snag that he throws to 1st. Pedroia safe by a step or two.
The crowd is very loud tonight. Love it.
Have Pedroia steal? Has McCarver noticed that Chickenhawk does not have super steal speed?
Youk now 2-2 after swing at a ball.
Safe! 1st and 2nd!
Youk with a grounder to short. Throw to 2nd, Pedroia is safe after Cabrera drops the ball.
Papi…………
Martinez with an “oh shit” visit to the mound.
Pedroia was safe anyway. Not sure they would have been able to get Youk at first either.
2-0 to Papi.
Save the pitches Carmona. Throw a meatball.
3-0 to Papi.
A gift strike for Carmona. That looked high AND outside. 3-1.
3-0 Pitch to Papi called a strike. Looked a little high.
Carmona getting gift strikes.
Papi walks.
Manny up, bases loaded, no outs.
After two bad calls, Carmona doesn’t even make it close. Loaded for Manny.
Ok, Rob. You do play by play, and I’ll do color. :-)
Thank you for the PbP!
Carmona is starting to gag…gotta make him pay. Manny needs to un-man him.
I can’t believe Robin Ventura of all people had 18 grand slams.
Manny 0-2 after foul ball.
Ok Paul…
I have never seen anyone as locked in as Manny this postseason. It seems he gets even better with two quick strikes on him…
Manny fouls off the 1-2 pitch.
Work the count Manny. He will make the mistake.
I hate unnecessary exclamation points, as in that Fox graphic showing who’s on base: “Right Now!”
Another low pitch
2-2
Fouls off the 2-2 pitch.
Carmona at 20 pitches.
20 pitches, 0 outs.
Gahh. Manny took that pitch for a ball and fouled it off twice. Couldn’t get it that time.
I fear a DP. Big time.
Manny strikes out on a low and in pitch.
I can accept the strike out. Better than a DP.
Lowell needs to deliver.
Oh, Lowell….
This could be a major squander.
They can NOT let Carmona off the hook here.
Lowell flies out to shallow right. Nixon gets the ball back in quickly.
JD Drew is up. Is there ever been a time when someone has been so overdue?
All on the shoulders of J.D. Drew.
Paul that is a scary sentence
“I can accept the strike out. Better than a DP.”
A double play would have brought in a run. Not needling, just making a comment.
True Trisk
J.D.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Drew now at 3-1. Carmona is pulling a Dice K and trying to nibble the edges of the zone.
JD DREW WITH THE GRANNY TO CENTER FIELD!!!!!!!!
J.D. just earned his 14 Million.
GRAND SLAM!!!!!!!!
Did that just happen!?
DREW!!!!
That was Bellhorn-esque!!
I HAVE ALWAYS HAD FAITH IN JD!!!!!!
Treating Carmona like the new fish in prison. A strike down the middle, that Drew crushes.
I feel pretty vindicated myself. I can’t imagine how Drew feels.
Yes SF, it did JD Drew just took a curtain call you weren’t seeing things.
Carmona now at 26 pitches.
J.D. most certainly deserved THAT curtain call. The whole time the ball was traveling I kept expecting Sizemore to settle under it… Wow!
Tek now at 3-0
Tek walks.
Okay boys, keep the cleats on thier throats.
I don’t mind curtain calls, I was just teasing SF because I know he loves them so much.
Speedy up.
I fully expected after Lowell couldn’t drive in the run by swinging at the first pitch that the Sox would get no more than one run if they were lucky. J.D. Drew… Just… Wow.
Mastny is up and throwing in the Tribes pen.
Ellsbury grounds back to Carmona. Inning over.
36 pitches
3 H
2 BB
4 huge runs.
Holy shit, Drew. Nothing could have made me happier there… I wanted so badly to like him this season.
JD Due!!!
Missed the top of 1, how did Schilling look?
Drew had a 118 OPS+ in the second half. I don’t think he’s going to be a problem for next season — particularly when you consider his offensive upturn coincides with the health of his son.
He looked good except for one pitch that Sizemore rocked just foul, Trisk.
Knock on wood.
Schilling looked good Trisk.
I knocked on wood! You can’t blame me for that one!
4-1.
VMart takes one for a ride down the right field line.
Ok Curt, we spotted you 4 runs. I don’t want to have to hear how you missed with some pitches or bad mechanics to explain blowing a lead.
C’mon Curt…I mean really..geez
Well, solo shots like that one don’t feel nearly as bad when, let me just give this its proper emphasis, J.D. DREW HITS A GRAND FREAKING SLAM!!
Schilling comes right back with the K! Nice split.
Garko strikes out on a nasty splitter.
Peralta grounds out to 3rd.
Nice pick by Youk!
Yeah, JD is Nancy no more!
Garko is a moron.
Garko quote being talked about. If he did say this, “dumbass” comes to mind.
Okay, solo job..but that’s it. Let’s get it back here..and stop that damn Cleveland Rocks song
Lofton flies out to left.
I hate “Cleveland Rocks” song. Why play it? Carmona got his ass handed to him in the 1st.
Schill now at 22 pitches.
Well, to be fair, he didn’t say all that. His “Champaigne tastes the same” quote isn’t all that bad. The columnist, however, is clearly a hack (and either doesn’t understand the difference between “its” and “it’s” or Fox doesn’t).
Well, Paul SF, what the players don’t know won’t hurt ’em. :)
Julio being Julio. Strikeout.
Haha, no doubt, BD. Still, it’s not entirely fair to Garko, and I’m kind of a stickler about stuff like that.
Quote marks serve a purpose, though I understand ballplayers aren’t necessarily grammar experts.
Lugo K’s…worthless AB with the exception of making Carmona throwing pitches.
Yes BD you had 2, Renteria and Cabrera.
John Farrell is Boston’s PC correct?
Pedroia with a single over a Lofton who leaps into the monster.
Pedroia ends up with a leadoff double.
A shortstop who could hit? A very long time ago there was this kid named Nomar…meanwhile it appears we have a second baseman who can hit.
Yes, Trisk.
YES! Dustin with a double! I hope Loften hurt himself..not, like, injured, but felt it. He just annoys me.
So why wasn’t Tavarez activated? I just saw him in the dugout – seems odd not to have his arm at least in the bullpen
Thanks SF, he is listed as a possible candidate to replace Torre. That’s why I asked.
BTW, the SS who could hit question, it WAS rhetorical. :) I DO know our last bunch of shortstops. My (sigh) just didn’t come through. :)
Actually, the last time the Sox had a shortstop record a 100 OPS+ was Nomar Garciaparra in 2004. O-Cab and Renteria were close but under 100.
NICE! (visions of Papi getting hit running through my head)
I know you were kidding BD, so was I.
Youk with another infield hit that allows Pedroia to slide headfirst into 3rd. Peralta may not have been able to get him, looked off balance after he fielded it.
Wow crazy DP
AW Damn. Figures
Ooh, bad luck from Papi. Hits it on the nose, but right into the shift for the DP. Too bad. Woulda liked to have seen another run…
Farrell is very highly regarded, I think Gammons said he thinks he may be the first guy to be both a manager and a GM, whatever that’s worth.
As long as it’s not LaRussa, I don’t care who it is.
Thanks SF.
In fact, no Sox shortstop has put up a 100 OPS+ in even a half-season since Nomar — Alex Gonzalez came closest in the first half of 2006.
JUST past the glove…shoot. And once again they start talking about Schill’s ‘diminished stuff’
Nixon with a liner that is just out of a diving Pedroia’s reach.
Casey bringing back the Jeff Reardon with that beard.
‘diminished stuff’
Can you argue with this?
How come they never talk about DP’s when the Sox could use one?
You guys may have already talked about this but just glancing at the numbers and Trot has minimal success against Schilling. Was he put in there for sentimental reasons?
.222 for Trot.
.000 for Franklin G. (2 AB’s)
Just curious.
BD – be happy – that would probably mean jinxing any DP
*sigh* Two line drive hits. Not good.
SF, definitely not. Just tired of them repeating it every inning..and two on, no out. ugh
Oh c’mon, he’s NOT going to go to Wake I hope
*whew* That was hit not nearly as hard as it looked off the bat.
Come on, double play!
Blake singles to left.
Paul SF – I agree I was like “is it going to go out?” when I saw the hit – and then they cut to where the ball was going and I was surprised.
If the Sox make it to the Series, I hope they give the ball to Lester instead of Wake to start.
Meanwhile, in the game the Sox have to win to get to the game they have to win to even make that a consideration, Schilling is falling behind…
finally, a strike. C’mon Curt! You can do this!
Wow – some big outs off of hits that at least looked like they were going to be rockets.
A long fly ball out is still an out. But it does nothing for my digestion.
Now would NOT be a good time for Hafner to break out.
Hafner = “Boston’s Nancy Drew” (well the one prior to tonight at any rate)
I would be interested to see what the Knuckle ball would do in the thin air of Coors Field.
That would be Pat Darcy.
Good point, Rob. You could make a case that the thin air would help it move more… or less, lol
I’m surprised by the number of pitches the Indians are taking – they usually seem more aggressive.
Well Hafner is going to hear it tomorrow here in Ohio
YES! Way to work it Curt, diminished or no! :)
Hafner grounds out to Youk. Inning over.
18 pitch inning for Schilling.
Huge outs after getting the first two runners on. Phew. Based on the flow of baseball, Schilling could breeze through the rest of the game, having escaped his first serious jam.
This is what I hope, at any rate.
I do hope you were knocking on something, Paul SF…
Is Carmona on full rest?
Paul, come ON!!! You can’t type stuff like that, even with that disclaimer…
Yes, Trisk.
Manny walks.
3rd walk tonight for the Sox.
Too bad Manny couldn’t have done that in the first! Oh well…
If Manny had done that in the first inning the JD wouldn’t have hit a grand slam, Paul.
C’mon Mike…get out of that little slump..make up for the fly in the first. A walk would work..
Interesting what the postseason does. Sabathia and Carmona were nearly unhittable against Boston during the regular season. Beckett was good, against Cleveland and everyone else, but not THIS good. Curious…
Drew lurking behind Lowell.
Go get em Wedge, he’s done.
3-0 now to Lowell.
Wow, I love it, but Carmona is not getting the calls tonight…let’s hope it keeps up!
Leave him in Wedge.
Question: if Lowell gets on and JD hits into a DP, does he get booed?
It sure would be nice to get a couple more runs here.
6 BB’s is his season high.
Why not, SF? The bases would have still been loaded. Unless you mean Carmona would have been gone already?
All right, Lowell with the walk!
No way.
No SF, he gets a pass for the rest of the night in my opinion.
J.D. with another ribbie!!
He’s done. Waited one batter too long.
YESSSSSS. JD driven in all five. How fast does one go from goat to hero?
Drew is the RBI machine of the night. Back up the middle that scores Ramirez.
Anyone know what the record is for RBI’s in an LCS game?
Carmona grooved another to Drew.
buh-by Carmona.
Carmona’s shortest outing of the season comes at a good time for Sox fans.
Let’s rock their pen!
Royce Clayton? FOX really going the extra mile and miking up a pertinent player, LOL.
Perez pitching now. We need to rip the pen apart now.
Tek with a horrible swing for strike 2.
‘Tek, don’t let JD show ya up…
It seems like its always 0 and 2 on ‘Tek.. :(
Good luck the rest of the way guys. My battery is dead.
Interesting Paul…would be interesting to see if Drew can change that tonight.
Ok, nice deep out gets Lowell to third. Chance for Jacoby here!
Valentin and O’Leary did their 7 RBI games on successive nights during that WILD 1999 comeback.
ELLSBURY! Makes it 6-1!
Ellsbury with the single to left scoring Lowell.
God how Crisp must feel now.
NEXT YEARS rookie of the year drives one in!
BTW, how many teams have had successive ROYs? Not to get ahead of myself or anything..
LUGO!!! 2-RUN DOUBLE!!
6 through 9 tonight! FINALLY!
Lugo delivers down the third base line. Ellsbury hit the ludicrous speed button and scores from first.
8-1 Sox.
I think the Dodgers had something ike 5 in a row in the 90s, BD, and I think most of them flamed out, so…
HFS.
My wife agreed with Timmah and Joe about how fun it is to watch Jacoby…then wondered if he was fun to watch Karoake. :)
SF…they have awoken tonight.
I’ve been trying to text my parents at the game, to no avail…
Dodgers, 1992-1996
Eric Karros
Mike Piazza
Raul Mondesi
Hideo Nomo
Todd Hollandsworth
So not that bad actually.
I just wish it was, oh, about 4 innings later right now..
I know I am getting a little ahead of myself here. The game is still early, but if things stay the same, then tomorrow night we need to make sure we have a very short hook for Dice.
Pedroia walks.
Thanks, Paul SF…a good sign for this organization I think..
tomorrow night we need to make sure we have a very short hook for Dice.
I’d counter with “we need to make sure we score about forty six runs in the first four innings”…
Agreed, Rob SF…but do we follow with Lester?
The A’s won consecutive ROYs in 2004-05 — Bobby Crosby and Huston Street — so it’s not terribly uncommon.
That too SF.
Perhaps BD, but I think that almost every pitcher would be available.
WOW!!!!!!
10-1! I’m glad I’m not an Indians fan right now.
Intentionally put his head in front of the throw? now that has to be one of the stupidest things I have heard. Do you really think he’s arguing that, McCarver?
youki head butts score Droia!
Perez gone.
What a bizarre play! Man. Should Youk be on second since the throw hit him, or is it difference since he was going back to the bag?
i know, but it’s funny!
I’m giddy, but oh my god I wish it was the 7th! I know, broken record and all that…but still, ya know what I mean?
Another ballpark, and Youk has a three-run homer.
Holy Crap, the Inidians have gone Bad News Bears.
Dang…that was odd..
Wow, left the restaurant (with big screen t.v.) with my girlfriend (20 minute drive), it was 4-1, it’s now 10-1… they are putting a hitting clinic on… and p.s. The Ellsbury move has already paid dividends!!!!!!!!!
A Manny moon shot would be a perfect cap to the inning.
I almost feel sorry for the Indians, almost… we still need TWO wins, lets go boys
zzzzzzzzzzz
Sorry – little boring – just a good old beat down.
Think I’ll flip on the Michigan-Illinois game.
Congrats Sox fans, I’ll see you in game 7.
Manny walks.
Rob, I think this game is incredibly exciting. :)
10 runs, and Manny, Ortiz, and Lowell are hitless in the game.
Definitely should have been a foul ball, but it puts Youk in scoring position.
Strange that Ortiz has swung — ill advisedly — at the first pitch twice now. Almost had two double plays.
gagne time!
No game is over until all 27 outs are registered, never take any lead for granted
Interesting, every unlucky bounce or lazer hit that was robbed or turned into a double play in the two Indians losses has now gone our way, such a fickle game
Sox with a strong, strong pimp hand that inning knock in 6 runs.
For the record, the Sox have not blown a lead larger than five runs this season.
But we’ve seen a lot of things this postseason that we never saw from April to September…
VMart owns Schilling.
Another lead off hit. C’mon Curt, can’t you make it easy?
I heard that Paul, still gotta pitch and get through this
Schilling is average? Not “crafty”?
Great approach tonight, very patiend… 9 hits, 10 runs… says it all (also some errors and nervous plays on the Indians’ behalf)
Made it easy in the first, which really is the only inning he’s NEEDED to make it look easy. Which is cool for us, as apopleptic fans…
Good one, Tom.
Kudos to Fox/MLB for doing these managerial interviews mid-inning and not while there’s action on the field.
I’m guessing MLB enacted a new policy after complaints from managers…
Good point, Paul SF…I’m just nervous and excited, is all..
Peralta strikes out.
3 Ks through 4 IP for Schilling. That’s actually above average.
So, folks, in all seriousness…Curt goes five…would he be available Sunday for an inning you think, assuming he throws, oh, about 90 today?
The Mayor of Cleveland… how many teams have you played for Kenny?!?
P.S., Scared as shit right now about tommorow night and Dice K, if we get there…
Beckett available for relief help? Shades of Pedro oh so long ago against this same team..
Lofton grounds out to Youk.
Inning over.
MUCH better start for Curt tonight!
No, BD. Not on a 40-year-old arm.
You’ve got Beckett, Lester and Wakefield all likely available, plus Papelbon (assuming he won’t be needed tonight) for 2 IP if necessary.
True, Paul SF..and hey, Dice-K could surprise us…he wasn’t great the other day, but I thought he pitched, well, okay enough to maybe win..
Let’s go for RBI No. 6, J.D.!
Also, working the Indians’ bullpen hard tonight is very very advantageous to us… who would have ever thought J.D. Drew?
And the Redeemed One takes ball one..
Almost, hehe.
Shoot..thought for a sec he had number 6!
Tek who is the only starter without a hit tonight.
Anyone seen Transformers, the movie? My brother brought it to my house tonight and is swearing by it, actually he just called it a “masterpiece.”
Maybe Ellsbury, being Navajo, is pissed off at the blatantly offensive Indians logo
Another Damon-Ellsbury comparison, I love it
Intersting article on CNN Money regarding ARod.
http://money.cnn.com/2007/10/20/commentary/sportsbiz/index.htm?postversion=2007102015
Ortiz, Ramirez and Lowell all have no hits, anon.
All four have reached on walks, though.
Nice play by Sizemore to rob Ellsbury!
Ed, as a child of the ’80s, I LOVED it…some nice homages to the ’80’s series..and nice catch by Sizemore!
What a catch by Sizemore, great player
Ed, Ellsbury stated that the Indians nickname did not offend him.
Hell of a play to steal a hit from Ellsbury there by Sizemore.
A child of the 80s here too, perhaps we’ll watch it tonight if the sox hold on here!
That was me Paul, yes you are correct. My bad, misread the box score.
Me, I’m Polish…not like there are any jokes about my people or anything. :P
Tek is the only starter who hasn’t scored a run.
The Indians name is not as bad as the Redskins. That is inexcusable.
Timlin loosening in the pen..just stretching?
I’m with ya, BD. Aside from the Redskins and the Chief Wahoo logo, I’m usually fine with those kinds of nicknames. I mean, we’ve got Cowboys and Warriors and whatnot — groups of people known for their courage and bravery and ferocity. Not an insult to have Indians in there, unless you object to the misnaming of native people as “Indians.”
But, yeah, Chief Wahoo is ridiculously offensive. I’d be embarrased to wear it as an Indians fan.
How about the Texas Tech Red Raiders?
ANOTHER lead off single…
another blazing single for Trot
I always thought the Red Raiders referred to some sort of pirate clan…but hey, I’m a Gator, so I never really noticed them. :)
I think Casey Blake might be me in another life. Full beard, likes Metallica and “One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest”…
Red Raiders = bad
Seminoles = cool
I only just thought of it, BD. The NCAA cracked down hard on Indian-related nicknames, so it might mean something different.
how about those Sizemore highlights? Unbelievable stuff!
Here is the link:
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/10/17/is-there-a-naked-lady-on-chief-wahoos-nose/
Tom SF, Seminoles=teh sux (says the Gator fan!) :)
DP turned to end the inning.
Rob SF, it’s like that Red Dog thing, with the, um, compromised woman hidden in the dogs head..
AND DP!
Nice double play!
A much better performance from Schilling tonight!
Nice DP there, looks like Schilling may give us some innings here!
Hadn’t seen that one BD.
Hey, I don’t care about the school, I just like their name and the whole indian on the horse throwing down the spear, endorsed by the Seminole Nation.
If Schilling can get through 1 more inning unscathed, he deserves an ovation. I didn’t have much confidence in him tonight.
As this game is pretty well in hand (*knock*), I’m gonna take off. The laptop is too warm in my lap.
The second it looks like the Sox might be losing it, though, and I’ll return.
Ciao!
Cabrera with a beautiful snag to rob Pedroia.
Later Paul.
some phenomenal defensive plays right there
Later Paul.
Blake with a barehanded grab to throw out Youk.
Man, that was sick…
The mysterious double post.
Rob SF, here’s a link..I forgot about the role of Batman in the image…heh
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/FizzTheCarbonated/right-side-up.jpg&imgrefurl=http://msgboard.snopes.com/message/ultimatebb.php%3F/ubb/get_topic/f/16/t/001076/p/1.html&h=404&w=500&sz=40&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=_nhny_7oQcAlmM:&tbnh=105&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dred%2Bdog%2Bbeer%2Blabel%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den
err, yeah, sorry about that. :/
Paul certainly comes here to vent!!!
Curt looks pretty strong…he’s going as many as he can, I think.. (says the master of the obvious, me)
Man, now I know why bud who had Hafner on his fantasy baseball team wanted to kill someone… as he strikes out…
Hafner continues his black home impression.
Interesting BD…
Nice work by Curt that inning!
Ortiz strikes out looking.
God I hate Christ Dodd, what a horses ass, another politician riding on Daddy’s coat tails (See George W. Bush)
Up by 9, and not even Papi’s best game. Wow
sorry, angry nutmeger here
Laffey has now pitched 3 innings in relief. We need to get rid of him and make other pitchers from thier pen pitch.
Lowell with a two out single off the monster.
Agreed, Rob SF….let’s wear out those arms
Bottom of the order’s a clickin… dangerous for the Tribe
Laffey’s saving the Indians’ pen right now… gotta hit him hard next inning
JD, I forgive you for the K. I think we all do, really :)
pigs are flying, but i did predict the sox would win even when they were down 3-1…i’m always right, huh sf?….paul?
Drew strikes out. Are we in a good enough position to take some of the starters out and give them the rest of the night off? Or should we keep them in there?
DC, there is another game left. No sense jixing your prediction.
Nice try, Jacoby..
Curt, who cares about the runner. We are up by 9. Outs, outs, outs..one run won’t hurt..
Garko is so freakin annoying to me
8 outs to go. It’s only one!
Sac fly scores Garko.
10-2
Can’t believe they had that clip of Freddie Lynn on tape and ready to go (and set to really inappropriately upbeat jazz music for some reason). What the hell is wrong with FOX?
Would LOVE to see Curt go 8, but 2 runs in 7? WAY better than I think most of us expected. And look at that ovation!
Trot flies out to right.
Curt leaves with a tip of the cap to a standing ovation.
Can’t believe they had that clip of Freddie Lynn on tape and ready to go (and set to really inappropriately upbeat jazz music for some reason). What the hell is wrong with FOX?
The also had scooter the baseball and a glowing puck. Not the brightest minds at Fox.
I’m ashamed to admit but I never thought Schilling would give us 7 innings of 2 run ball, I thought this would be a nail biter all the way through
I liked the glowing puck, up until it seemed to travel into the fans when trapped against the boards
Ed, you aren’t the only one..Laffey is really saving their pen tonight
I for one would love the fatman to come in tommorow, what a joke, he’s had a horrible postseason and fox is still acting like he’s some savior, the Indians would be better without him coming in relief, especially if it’s a high stress game at fenway
Is there anything else on youtube of Sox punks doing embarrassing things I can watch to distract myself from this sad game? Like Youkilis having trouble finding Massachusetts on a map or something?
Lopez, one pitch, one out!
Marc YF, yeah, here’s one. :/
http://youtube.com/watch?v=A9ZUK4Ci3cM
Tommorow night should be some serious craziness, hopefully we come out on top
Ed, if the bottom part of the lineup plays like it did tonight, I think we can!
can we put gagne in now so he can feel he has some worth? Do we dare?
1 2 3 inning from our pen! yay!
ED NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NYET NYET NYET NYET NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN NUNCA NUNCA NUNCA!
I know BD, this is very encouraging, just think what we can do with a full line up!
Bostondreamer, is that all you have?
hahaha, o.k., he looks so sad though
Borowski is just a filthy filthy pitcher
Laffey out, Borowski in…
Wow, smashed foul by Youk
Manny’s hit streak on the line
So then, Tim, the top and bottom of the order…and Papi with a double!
Man Borowski is just lights out, so so good
Interesting comparision between Manny and VMarts homerun trots.
Ed, I love your reverse mojo!
Well a tie is ok, but he gets the rbi!
YES! I so fear their closer..
Lowell with an RBI to make the lead 10 again.
Drew with another hit!
Drew with another hit. Great job by Drew tonight.
Aye Rob SF…the man has just about made up for the regular season in one game…incredible
Tek walked. Ellsbury up with the bases loaded.
Ellsbury lines out to short.
Top of the 9th coming up.
Oh shoot..thought that was headed to center field by Jacoby..
Did they just say that the nightmare was coming in?
Uh oh. Gagne coming in…
oh jesus…he is in the game.
He..he..can’t blow it, can he? Tell me he can’t blow it…please..
Even Gagne isn’t capable of blowing this big of a lead…
Right?
It’s sad, really, that we all have the same thought..
If Gagne attempted to blow this I think a fan would kill him. There would not be a jury that could find them guilty of it.
Hopping over to Baseball Musings..
“A Cleveland comeback is possible! Eric Gagne is in the game!”
(sigh)
Not in Suffolk County anyways.
Gagne gets the grounder back to the mound.
Rob SF, I would volunteer for the duty of removing him from…harm…ever..
and, and..he has gotten the first two!
He didn’t blow it!
GAGNE WITH A CLEAN 1-2-3 INNING!!!!!!!!!
“I’M GOING TO DISNEY LAND!!”
Gagne 1,2,3? Bottom of the order alive… bring it tommorow night baby!!!!
All Hands On Deck Indeed… see yah tommorow guys, can’t wait, man I love the postseason, it’s a one game series!
Game.
Have a goodnight everyone. Get your game 7 rituals in order for tomorrow night.
My Fenway Park 75th Anniversary T shirt, the one I wore religiously in ’04, has been washed and ready to go..much to my wife’s dismay..heh
ESPN(2) analysts just said if they’d polled Sox nation prior to tonight we would have overwhelmingly voted to replace him with Kielty.
Does everyone agree? I know we now have the benefit of hindsight, but I was never clamoring to replace Drew, just Coco.
As much as some of Lugo’s ABs have pissed me off this series, I know he’s a superior hitter to Cora.
gee, i thought they’d save gagne for tonight’s [sunday] game, top of the ninth, no outs, based juiced, tie score…or not
Report: Indians’ Byrd bought nearly $25K of HGH
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2007/news/story?id=3072845
Is this the same Paul Byrd who shut down Yankees lineup in Game 4?
Yes it is Dan
