Beckett Goes for Sweep/Sixteen: Angels-Sox Gamer VIII

Clay Buchholz and the Sox offense delivered in the early game today, and now Josh Beckett can lead the Sox to a huge doubleheader sweep.  A lot happened today — Clay looked solid if inconsistent, Youk seemed to find a bit of his stroke, and Papi launched one into the right field stands, a welcome sight.  JD Drew continued to raise his average (though he botched a soft liner in the field), and Dustin Pedroia restated his case for the rookie of the year trophy.  Right now Kevin Cash is rushing from Ottawa to relieve the injured Doug Mirabelli (sent to the DL), while the recently jettisoned Wily Mo Pena heads to Logan to catch the shuttle to DC and Jacoby Ellsbury slots into the centerfield slot tonight.  All this before 5pm.

Use this as your thread for all of tonight’s action, Sox’ lineup after the jump.  Go Boston!

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. J.D. Drew, RF
6. Mike Lowell, 3B
7. Jason Varitek, C
8. Eric Hinske, 1B
9. Julio Lugo, SS

SP – Josh Beckett

  • Ok.. so what does this mean for Wake? I imagien Tek will catch Wake’s starts with the youngster releiving someone else until Mirabelli’s back. Tek has at least had SOME experience with the knuckler.
This could spell doom for Boston

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 6:29 pm
  • Mirabelli out for a little while spells doom for the sox? Was Dougie on a tear I didn’t know about?
Maybe, if “doom” was an acronym for something more positive it could be spelled:
    Doug Out, Offense Mushrooms

    FenSheaParkway August 17, 2007, 6:39 pm
  • I agree, Fen; I’ve never heard of a team going into a death-spiral because of losing its backup catcher. Tek has caught Wake previously, although I’m sure it’s not an enjoyable experience for him. I don’t foresee any circumstances where we’ll say “Damn, if only we had Mirabelli in that situation!”

    Ayuh - SF August 17, 2007, 6:46 pm
  • I believe I read that Cash also has experience catching knuckleballers. Mirabelli did have a couple timely homers in the past week or so, but I think they tend to stick with us because they’re so infrequent.

  • nice snag dusty…..that is hwo you start it off

    TheTree1918 August 17, 2007, 7:11 pm
  • and that is how you DON’t get started lugo….get in front of it 15 errors

    TheTree1918 August 17, 2007, 7:12 pm
  • It’s true that Tek has caught Wakefield before… but with less than stellar results. (I seem to remember at least one important game in which the Captain had a ton of passed balls trying to chase Tim’s pitches.)
But do we have any indication of how long ‘Belli will be gone? If it’s just a couple of starts, I hardly think it will make a major difference… especially since Dougie’s bat is hardly something to be missed, as others have pointed out.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Ellsbury leading off? That’s bold of Francona, I guess. Longish at bat, but it results in an out.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:26 pm
  • Ditto DPed, but with a short at-bat. 2 gone.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Ortiz Ks. 15 pitches for Santana.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • So, no weeping and wailing and grieving for Wily Mo, I see.
He gave us a fair number of memories, most of them comical.
The poor fella got way off on the wrong foot, dropping a fly ball over the right field wall for an assisted home run. He was pretty much a figure of fun (or frustration) from that point on, though on occasion he did manage to crush a pitch like no one has crushed one since Jim Rice in his prime.
The deal with the Nationals is the Wily One’s final indignity with the Sox, basically a bag-o-balls trade … One of the worst teams in baseball will give Boston one of their scrubs, eventually, in exchange for relieving Fenway of his presence.
So long, Wily Mo, and thanks for all the whiffs.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:40 pm
  • anybody there?

    rootbeerfloat August 17, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • Present.
Another 1-2-3 inning for Ervin “Magic” Santana. 32 pitches. Neither side has had a hit through two; the Halos have had two baserunners.
How is it that Boston jumped all over Lackey early, but is coming up empty so far with Santana. Baseball is weird.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:45 pm
  • Hudson I dont agree its a bag of balls trade. Instead it was put as a PTBNL because the returning player is on Washingtons 40 man roster and would have had to clear trade waivers… sorta like the Javy Lopez for Adam Stern but couldnt be completed until after the season, so it was listed as a PTBNL.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 7:46 pm
  • Hudson….could be a fatigue issue….

    TJ August 17, 2007, 7:47 pm
  • TJ, does anyone know who this player would be? And who would the Nationals conceivably have (and part with in exchange for WMP) of any value?

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • Beckett gets Haynes and Figgins, but Cabby reaches on a single to center for the first hit of the game.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:50 pm
  • I liked WMP. But then again, I also liked Hee-Seop Choi.

I wish it were otherwise, but neither were going to work out here. It’s a real shame WMP never had a chance to develop properly, because he’s such a tantalizing “What If?”

At least he’s going to the Nats, where he won’t face Boston and where he’s got a good shot to help himself and to help a team everyone would like to see succeed, at least a little. After all, the Nats doing well would make up for MLB’s poor treatment of the Expos and it would annoy the excerable Peter Angelos.

  • Speaking of which, not keeping Cabrera after 2004 still makes my head hurt. Not only has Boston had a revolving door of shortstops since, and not only is he batting .309, but he also was a great clubhouse presence/fan favorite.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Ugh, Vlad impales a Beckett pitch for a double that brings O’Cab home. 1-0 Cali.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • No idea who it will be but im sure a name will surface in the coming week.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 7:54 pm
  • Inning over, damage limited.
    Noted at Extra Bases blog:
    * Kielty coming up this weekend… I don’t get it, does that mean Ellsbury is going back after today?
    * The Orc is starting on Sunday. Why don’t we have a five-man rotation in place yet, with Schilling and Lester back? IDGI.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:56 pm
  • Hinske Ks. Two gone. Sox still hitless.
(Well, TJ, I have to say that any dispensable member of the Nationals 40-man roster is a bag-of-balls trade in my book. But maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised. I guess the Sox got some cash. But the fact is Boston was prepared to unload him at all costs, and if no one but Washington was biting…)

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • Who knows…. maybe Boston will add another mid level guy this winter and it will end up being for Chad Cordero

    TJ August 17, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • Why the hell is Tavarez starting Sunday?
This game is typical in two ways:
    1. Struggling against a crappy pitcher with an ERA over 6.00
    2. 14 hits in the first game and none yet tonight.
Hope the Sox can give us some offense here in the 4th.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • By the way, shows Wakefield starting on Sunday, and Lester on Monday.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • they want Wakefield to start monday against TB so they pushed him back a aday and will start Tavarez Sun

    TJ August 17, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • JEll grounds out.
    DPed flies out.
After this afternoon’s game, I didn’t think we’d be back to praying for a run, just one measly run, so soon again. Sigh. Brace yourself for no cushion and a late appearance by Eric Gagne.
Noted: Yankees coming out of rain delay, it appears.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • >>>they want Wakefield to start monday against TB so they pushed him back a aday and will start Tavarez Sun
Ah. Well, I can see the reasoning, but the reasoning reminds me a little of Scoscia’s trick (unsuccessful) move this morning, putting Lackey up against Clay instead of going ahead with the expected duel between the 15-game winners. It’s almost begging for Wakefield’s streak against TB to be broken… And if it means less chance of a win on Sunday, I’m not sure it’s worth it. We’ll see.
(DOrt Ks. Sa_tana is perfect through 4, 60 pitches.)

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:12 pm
  • Tom Brady just had an INT returned 51 yards for a TD 7-0 Tennessee.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 8:16 pm
  • Nice to see another team f-up the sac buntt

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Yes this has disaster written all over this. How we have not gotten a hit on a guy with balloon like ERA is odd.

    Rob August 17, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Indeed Rob. We’re screwed.
Clearl other teams are watchign this and should we make it to the post-season will just invert their rotation against us. We’ll be killed.

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • I hate you Manny

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:27 pm
  • We got a hit at least. Too bad we couldn’t POSSIBLE knock JD in.

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Cuase Miek Lowell got so excited that we got a hit against NotJohan that he swung at teh FIRST DAMN PICTH

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • Varitek looks just freakin silly. Maybe we should let ME catch this freakin game.

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • Lugo makes ANOTHER error. This is getting rediculous.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • 2-0 Angels thanks to the Lugo error. Sigh.
    Come on Beckett, double-play here.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • And the error costs Boston a run.
When Beckett allows just 1 (earned) run this deep in the game, the Sox should be well ahead. This seems to be happening a lot lately.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Beckett with K #7. He’s looking really good tonight, pitching his way out of trouble.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:44 pm

    TJ August 17, 2007, 8:47 pm

  • JBec guts his way out of a JLug-created jam.
    Not enjoying the soccer-like score.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • Julio tries to atone for his fielding with a double. One out.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Lugo with a fly ball over Matthew’s head! Kinda (almost) makes up for his pair of errors. We’ll see.
Come on Ellsbury/Pedroia, unravel this noob.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Nuthin’ from Ellsbury. Two gone, up to Dustin.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • And nothing from Pedroia. This is really getting annoying.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Bah.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • 85 pitches for Santana, so he’ll be back for at least the 7th, maybe more. Beckett’s at 95 going into the inning, so get ready for some MDC/Timlin/Gagne action, I’d guess.
(I still don’t get why Lopez was sent down; his ERA was lower than most of those remaining when he left.)

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • Two quick outs for Josh, that’s good news.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • Silver lining: Yankees losing 1-0, men on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • 104 after seven for Beckett. Wonder if Francona will let him go another, he’s pitched 120-130 at times this year… If he comes out, he will have allowed one earned run yet would be in line for a loss unless the Sox score here. Arrggh.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Holy balls Lugo made a somewhat nice play without dropping the ball!
7IP, 1ER, 1BB, 8K. Probably not out for the 8th. Another great performance by Beckett, ruined by very little (none) run support. Come on guys, score big here and get him a W… or at least take the L away.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:03 pm

    Rob August 17, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Papi with a lead-off single! Keep the rally going, Manny.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:06 pm

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Time for some positive vibes people!

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • It had to do with Lopez having options. Aside from that the only other option would have been designating Tavarez. Snyder doesnt have any options left and he’s been too good to designate. Lopez will be back in no more then 14 days.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Manny crushes a ball but right to Anderson. Good effort–Santana isn’t fooling anyone anymore.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Drew with a solid double! Tying run is in scoring position for Lowell, and the Angels will call on Speier to stop the bleeding.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Drew doubles, Papi to 3rd, one out. Speier coming in for the great Sa_tan_.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Okay, the cutscene of the kid running the bases after singing the national anthem has me a little teary-eyed. We HAVE to score here after that. Cancer-killers don’t lose to guys like Ervin.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • I saw that live, Atheose. Gave me big ‘ol goosebumps.

    Anonymous August 17, 2007, 9:14 pm

I’m almost dreading a comeback, followed by a Gagne appearance. Replay of a week ago Friday?

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Vlad promptly triples. Oh boy. The Halos were built to bring him home with no outs.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Homerun Gary Matthews Jr.
I miss our amazing bullpen, the one everyone was raving about two weeks ago. I’m gunna be furious to see Beckett get the W.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Obviously Delcarmen was not the answer tonight.

    Rob August 17, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Jeez, the Angels play *both* small ball and long ball against MDC, now 4-1 Cali. So much for holding.
(Now watch Boston come back to tie it, and Gagne come in for the most nerve-wracking 9th yet.)

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • >>>I’m gunna be furious to see Beckett get the W.
I know you meant “the L,” because I will be equally furious.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Six outs left to redeem this stinkfest.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • They just broke out the video of the kid running the bases again. Let’s get this good mojo going!
    Start us off Lugo!

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Hins-K-e.
    Five outs left.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • I’ve only got Gameday up, so my judgment may be illinformed, but shouldn’t Francona have let Beckett go out for the 8th? 104 pitches, sure, but it didn’t take too many to get through the 7th, and he’d only allowed one ER.

    stuck working August 17, 2007, 9:32 pm

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:32 pm

  • Errrr, Jacoby*

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:33 pm

    Come on Pedroia!

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • 9 straight balls from Shields before he finally puts one down the middle.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • David is due for a clutch hit.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Can Papi please have one clutch hit this season?

    Rob August 17, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Pedroia with a hit to right field! Bases loaded with 1 out, we’ll see Papi and Manny both up as long as there’s no DP.
Scocia going to a lefty for Ortiz.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Come on Papi, please!!

pale blue eyes August 17, 2007, 9:37 pm

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • Man, when has there been a faster trio running the bases at once? Lugo, Ellsbury, Crisp is pretty cool.

    stuck working August 17, 2007, 9:39 pm

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • Wild pitch! That’s one way to do it. 4-2, runners on 2nd and 3rd, eliminating the likelihood of a DP. C’mon, Papi.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:42 pm

Oh man, who pitches the 9th? Might be Timlin, on the chance that it goes to extras (giving Tito a chance to avoid Gagne. But I bet he decides to “have faith” in him to help him out of his rut.)

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 9:44 pm

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • Runners at the corners. One out.
    DP or I kill gagne

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • DP even more urgently needed!

pale blue eyes August 17, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • *cocks revolver*

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • 1st and 3rd…one out. Ugh.

    Devine August 17, 2007, 10:06 pm
  • Oh, man, single puts runners at the corners for Cabby.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:06 pm
  • Tie game.
I hate Gagne. He’s so WORTHLESS

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • Damn you Gagne you7 piece of crap!

    Rob August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • *pulls trigger*

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • WHy didnt we brign in Timlin? WHY?

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • There it is, the tying run scores on a single, 1st and 2nd, one out.
I don’t think it is going to be safe for Eric Gagne to go out to dinner in Boston anytime soon.

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • Well, he’s useless!

pale blue eyes August 17, 2007, 10:07 pm

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • Kill me, please.

    Devine August 17, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • This is getting comical. I keep thinking “Okay, he’s gotten all of the blown-saves out of his system. He’s gunna be lights-out for the rest of the season now” but he just keeps on blowing things!
And now Vlad is up, who makes pitchers like Gagne–pitchers that keep missing their spots–pay badly.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • Did Gagne, like, reinjure himself on the flight from Texas to Boston? Maybe, reaching for an extra bag of chips from the service cart?

    Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:09 pm
  • There’s no one to kill you, Devine, we’ve all committed suicide.

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • SCREW THIS TEAM! I’m done!

    Dionysus August 17, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • Way to go Gagne…that is three game you have now blown here.

    Rob August 17, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • This is rediculous. Absolutely rediculous.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Finally the DP, way to late. Mop-up duty for Gagne from now on, I suggest.

pale blue eyes August 17, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Seriously, Gagne *cannot* be used again in anything but a blow-out, I don’t care what his career stats are or how much Theo paid.
Gagne reminds me of Foulke when he was spent. He’s got NOTHING.
Youks turns a heads-up double play, but it’s all but too late.
A comeback would almost suck, in that friggin’ Gagne would get a win for his “efforts.”

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Youk makes a great play and doubles-up Vlad at 2nd. But the damage is done, the momentum has swung back towards the “fuck the Red Sox” side of the pendulum, and there’s just no way we’re going to score 2 more runs this game. It just isn’t happening.
I hope Gagne breaks a finger punching a wall in the dugout.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Why didn’t Papelbon pitch?

    Bozo August 17, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Still one more chance for the Sox here. Let me make a hopeful paraphrase of your earlier remarks, Atheose: “I’m gunna be furious to see Gagne get the W.”

    stuck working August 17, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Did Gagne catch a head of lettuce to the back of the head coming off the field?

    Rob August 17, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • You know what’s even worse in all of this?
K-Rod is gunna get the win. I hate myself.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • And so much for Gagne having trouble with adjusting to pitching in the 8th. Let’s get him a win now anyway.
    Unlikely, one out already.

pale blue eyes August 17, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • Oh jesus, things are getting worse. Way to blow the fucking call ump. Youk clearly fouls the ball out.
Tito, I demand that you get thrown out yelling at the umpire. You HAVE to get yourself thrown out here.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • Youk gets thrown out too, and rightfully so. This game is a goddamn joke.
    Goodnight everyone.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:18 pm
  • Francona and Youkilis getting tossed on a terrible call (foul tip ruled a strikeout).

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • Oh, one more thing: if we somehow DO manage to tie the game and send it to extra innings, who is gunna play first? Tavarez?

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • It is unreal how similar this game is to the last Friday’s comeback/Gagme upchuck against the Orioles. (I think that was last Friday.)

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • Who would you rather have pitching in a save situation?
    A. Eric Gagne
    B. Rudy Seanez
    C. A potted plant

    Kazz August 17, 2007, 10:22 pm
  • And K-Rod still has the balls to fist-pump at the end, as if he was the cause of the win. What a night.

    Atheose August 17, 2007, 10:23 pm
  • Poor job by Tito using both Oki and Paps earlier today with Gagne’s problems since the trade.

    Rob August 17, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • Don’t blame Tito for being unable to trust a closer-caliber pitcher to get three outs, EVER.

    Kazz August 17, 2007, 10:27 pm
  • K-Rod is a total prick.
Gagne, single handedly working at keeping us ou of the playoffs.

    brooklynSF August 17, 2007, 10:28 pm
  • Atheose, your question is now academic, but couldn’t Ortiz have shifted from DH to 1st, and someone been brought in to DH in his place? (I confess I’m not up on the rules of replacing the DH. I seem to recall a time when the pitcher had to bat if the DH is taken out.)

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:31 pm
  • A potted plant, please.

    DW-sf August 17, 2007, 10:32 pm
  • Gagne threw almost nothing but fastballs, and couldn’t locate his changeup or curve for strikes. He might’ve been burned on some calls, but when a guy is throwing 93mph fastballs with little movement and he’s throwing no breaking stuff, of course he’s going to get knocked around. Maybe Tito, Tek, and Farrell should have realized this, and changed strategies / pitchers. Whatever.
Gagne is going to be despised after this. I still think he’s a good pitcher, but he can’t keep pitching in high leverage situations without his best stuff. I’m pissed, but feel sorry for him. He came to a playoff team, and performed terribly.

    Andrew F (Sox Fan) August 17, 2007, 10:34 pm
  • * Beckett should have 17 wins by now.
    * Gagne’s ERA with the Red Sox so far has got to be a kajillion.

The Ghost of Hudson August 17, 2007, 10:34 pm
  • Ghost of Hudson – I know this because Torre does this from time to time, but no, if you move Ortiz to play first, you lose the DH.

    Lar August 17, 2007, 10:38 pm
  • if Ortiz moved to first the pitcher would replace youk in his batting spot. the only time a DH can be replaced by another DH is if the first DH leaves the game for a piunch hitter/runner.

    TJ August 17, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • Be careful what you wish for?

    DW-sf August 17, 2007, 10:40 pm
  • I wish for pitchers who make outs and batters who don’t. Is that really too much to ask?

    Kazz August 17, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • Heart-rendingly awful. I sincerely hope that game was it for worst loss of the year because this time it affected how I deal with loved ones, and I can’t keep doing it. I really think about leaving baseball (as I’ve said before) when it makes me feel this bad. I don’t think I ever will, permanently. God, it’s just a game. Why does it hurt and make me feel so good depending on the outcome?

    Devine August 17, 2007, 11:33 pm
  • TJ August 17, 2007, 11:38 pm
  • Thank God for Eric Gagne. Red Sox fans would be bored with such a big lead, and Yankee fans would be clamoring about the G Men.
