Can MLB Get a Refund?

Am I alone in thinking TBS’ "best" team of Chip Caray and Buck Martinez leaves a lot to be desired? (For example, don’t you actually have to be "good" to be "the best"?)

I’d rather get the Tampa-AL Central crew of Don Orsillo and Harold Reynolds. The giggle-fest probability just went way up for that series.

Also, this note from the USA Today media column:

ESPN Monday debuts a SportsCenter ad in which novelist and Red Sox fan Stephen King writes on-air copy saying the New York Yankees lost a game because they were "possessed by the demon."

Hey, whatever works!

  • Agreed. It’s a shame there are so many uninspired voices here, and working in unfamiliar teams. It’s really sad that Jon Miller has been teamed all these years with Flat-Earth Joe Morgan, and Joe Buck with endlessly irritating Tom McCarver. I’d really love to see Orel Hershiser and David Cone working the big stage; they’ve been fantastic as analysts.

  • Agree with Paul and YF. Keith Hernandez has done a pretty good job as well, in my opinion, with SNY. And Ed Coleman is one of the best in the business, and I don’t understand why he hasn’t been used at all on the national stage – perhaps his contract prevents him? I don’t get it. I think EC is the best of NY.

  • I agree with SF’s praise of Keith Hernandez, which I never expected to. You see the NY Times article on him from a couple days ago? Very funny.

  • I’m annoyed we don’t get Harold Reynolds. He’s just about the best, despite any sexual harassing he may do in the office.
Btw, that Stephen King advertisement can be found at It’s pretty hilarious.

  • You sure he didn’t say “possessed by the Damon” ?

  • From the site you sent us to Ath…
“Today, the big, messy epic that was the 2008 regular season draws to a close with two games at Fenway Park against our emasculated arch-rivals, the not-going-to-the-playoffs-despite-a-three-billion-dollar-payroll New York Yankees.”
Really? You are STILL trying to pretend you aren’t one of the big dogs payroll wise? Come on fellas, you’re #2, not 22.
“Chandler (I can only guess they are referring to Mussina) wants win number 20? What the hell do I care if he gets it? We’ve got something to play for next week, where the Bingster will be at home, polishing his math books.”
You made the playoffs and STILL you are focused on the Yankees. Unreal.
Great P.O.V. thanks for sending me over the Ath. LOL. You’ve ruined my afternoon. LOL.

  • Hey, sorry John! I was merely pointing to the video they had of the sportscenter commercial featuring Stephen King. I didn’t tell you to read past that!
And I don’t think their point was to make fun of the Yankees for spending a lot, but rather to point out that such a large payroll isn’t making the playoffs. The Red Sox took a lot of flak in 2006 for missing the playoffs despite having a huge payroll, so I don’t think it’s too off-base for SurvingGrady to spend half-a-sentence pointing out the Yankees predicament.
As for the Chandler Bing comments… I guess he looks a LITTLE like him, but I don’t really see a huge resemblance.
Are you still sore after I knocked you our of our fantasy league playoffs? Do I get a prize? ;-)

    Atheose September 29, 2008, 1:54 pm
  • LOL not sore at all. I had the best team all season, then lost in the 2nd round, that’s nothing to hang your head at. Did you end up winning? I have been tied up with some personal issues here at home and I’ve been too busy to check. If you did win congrats!

    John - YF September 29, 2008, 1:59 pm
  • Yeah I ended up winning, thanks to a few great starts by Lincecum, Haren and Buehrle. I was surprised, because after getting matched up against your team I sort of phoned it in, not expecting to come close.

  • I believe the deal was winner gets YFSF mug and t-shirt, but someone has to go back to April threads to check it out.
    Congrats, Atheose.

  • Free shirt? Absolutely. Add a mug too.

So yeah, you’ve got a prize coming your way, Oh Guru of the keyboard. :)

    Brad September 29, 2008, 4:13 pm
  • Free mug and a t-shirt? Sh*t yeah! No thanks to ARod, who disappeared from my roster thanks to Fox messing up.
Since I have the opportunity, I want to say “I told you so” to the people who said I was stupid for drafting Lincecum so early. It’ll be a travesty if Webb wins the Cy Young award over him.

  • SF, part of the deal was no matter who won the t-shirt awarded would be a YF t-shirt. Sooks for you Ath. LOL Just kidding.

    John - YF September 29, 2008, 5:09 pm
  • a YF t-shirt
They make shirts with a picture of YF on it? Now that’s a fashion statement!

    SF September 29, 2008, 5:16 pm
  • HEY – there’s baseball today! ChiSox up 1-0 in third.

    dw (sf) September 29, 2008, 6:05 pm
  • John, I believe the Red Sox were fourth in payroll this year behind NYY, NYM and CHC. (Although that is splitting hairs to a degree. It’s not exactly the Marlins payroll.)
And Chip Caray sucks. Factually challenged, he was practically run out of town when he called the Cubs on TV. He’s all about the cliche. Get ready for more “laser” references than you can shake a stick at. However, by most accounts, he’s about the nicest guy around.

  • I’m really not digging this TBS-exclusive first round business. I won’t couch it in won’t-someone-please-think-about-the-fans terms, since clearly, if playoff Baseball got better ratings, Fox would spring for the extra coverage. But it would’ve been nice to get at least one series on the old-fashioned airwaves this week, even if it wasn’t the Red Sox. On the upside, going to a bar means that the crowd noise will drown out the bad commentary.

    FenSheaParkway September 30, 2008, 10:35 am
  • If every game is on TBS, what happens if one of them goes into extra innings, or rain delay, or for some other reason overlaps another game?
