Changing Sox

The Boston Herald reported yesterday that the Red Sox will introduce "changes to the ballclub's logos" and "select uniforms" on Thursday. Doesn't sound like a full-fledged logo redesign to me, but perhaps new alternate logos and unis for Sunday day games or some such nonsense.

Discussion on SOSH spans the likely opinions any Red Sox fan is likely to have over such news, and it includes this alleged New Era Web site leak:

Not bad actually. I'm a big fan of the dual-socks logo anyway, and bought a hat a couple years ago that focuses on the socks more than the traditional "B." Assuming this is a once-in-a-while hat and not a new hat for every game (there's something to be said for the traditional logo, not the least of which is, well, tradition), it's very nice. Clean, certainly, and there's no doubt who the ballclub is.

Assuming, this is real and a hint of the new direction, It seems to achieve two important goals: Maintaining the traditional Sox look and feel while freshening and modernizing a well-known brand — kind of like what this ownership group has done with Fenway Park and the Red Sox organization itself.

  • I like the look as well, Paul.
It’s not like they don’t make a gillion hats with this logo on it anyhow – I even have a few.

  • This isn’t an indictment of the Sox in any way so please don’t take it that way…
One of my favorite things about the Yankees is that they have one hat, an away jersey and the pinstripes. These teams switching uniforms every other season gets old. (see my Buffalo Sabres)

  • I like that hat. Understated, direct, well-designed. The red button on the top is a nice little flourish.

I agree, to an extent. I love the dependability of the traditional uniforms like you have with the Yankees. At the same time, since reality dictates that teams are going to come up with any excuse to re-brand (or at least develop a brand), then at the least we should demand smart, elegant design. I think the Sox have gotten it with these new lids, if, in fact, they are the new lids.

  • One of the socks looks a bit redder than the other…

  • What?! Those pink Red Sox hats weren’t up for consideration?
The pink hats would sell like hotcakes if the Sox adopted them as their official hat, doncha think!?

  • SF: Yeah…the Sox “third” gear isn’t bad at all, that’s why I prefaced my statement. I actually like the Sox red uni’s!
