Cheers and Jeers: Giants-Sox Gamer I

Here’s how we expect the night to go at the Fens:

  • Cheers for Dave Roberts, whose stolen base was the turning point that led to the destruction of 86 years of pain and heartache.
  • Jeers for Barry Bonds, whose chase of a home run record continues to disgrace the game.
  • Cheers for the Mets by those watching the scoreboard.
  • Jeers for the Sox, because it’s just hard to predict victory when a team looks this bad.

  • Francis yesterday. Zito today. Not the easiest road, though you ain’t getting any sympathy here.

  • Tavarez facing his billionth ace of the year.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 6:58 pm
  • Can we make sure he doesn’t come around to score THIS time?

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:09 pm
  • Roberts with the leadoff single

    Rob June 15, 2007, 7:10 pm
  • Oh wow. Double brings Roberts home. Getting off on the right foot.
    *shoots self*

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:11 pm
  • Wild pitch allows Sweeney to dance home.
    2-0

    Rob June 15, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • Aaaand a pitch that gets away brings in the second run, with 2 out. Awesome.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:19 pm
  • So if the Sox aren’t as good as when they were romping, and they are better than they are right now when they are sucking, that means it’s possible that they are a .500 team, right? I mean, that would be better than right now, by a huge margin, no?
    This is just brutal.

    SF June 15, 2007, 7:23 pm
  • Drew does his job…by getting nicked in the sleeve.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Droid!

    SF June 15, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • PEDROIA!!!! Monster seats.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • Drew leans in to take a pitch. Droid hits a homer?
    What are we doing?

    Rob June 15, 2007, 7:25 pm
  • I understand why Ortiz got chucked, but why didn’t he get chucked immediately? Why did the ump wait?

    SF June 15, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • You’d think the home run would be fine for getting the team back into it. Why get run out of town right now? It’s not fire-lighting time.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:29 pm
  • Manny with a first pitch fly out. Way to work the count.
I take it that Papi got the heave for arguing the third strike?

    Rob June 15, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • What an undisciplined move by Papi, arguing the third strike. It was a bad call, but come ON, Papi, the team can’t afford that type of petulant BS. F*cking lame, babyish crap.

    SF June 15, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • Oh, they tossed Ortiz?
    Sh*t.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 7:30 pm
  • He totally deserved it, D. It’s infuriating that Papi would lose it in the first inning of a game which the Sox really need, against a guy he hits HARD. I guess that’s where the team is at, frankly – poor play, no discipline, they’ve got nothing at all right now.

    SF June 15, 2007, 7:32 pm
  • Oh, I’m not saying he didn’t deserve it.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Frankly, Ortiz’s whining at called strikes has deserved retribution for awhile now.
Looks like the 3rd run was one of those “All we got was one?” runs.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:16 pm
  • Ace’s wild.
    Ha ha ha ha. Hilarious.
Walks Lowell to start the inning.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • 3rd baseman makes a great play on a line-hugging grounder from Tek (easy double if it’s by him), and Lowell moves to 2nd.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Coco grounds rather slowly up the middle. Second baseman gathers, barely gets Coco (if he had been hitting left-handed, no chance). Lugo up with Lowell on 3rd and 2 out. Lugo walks. 4 walks for Zito, says Orsillo. Drew.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • what just happened??

    rootbeerfloat June 15, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • Drew delivers on the 3-2! Double to deep center and it’s 5-2 Sox.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • JD!!!

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • Drew doubles in Lugo and Lowell!!

    Rob June 15, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • the way drew stayed back on that curveball looks similar to how he was swinging to start the season.

    sf rod June 15, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • Giants were idiots. Had Lugo picked off, noticed Lowell hanging too far off 3rd, then tried to get him. Too late on the throw. Runners at 2nd and 3rd, then Drew smacked one.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • If it weren’t for the Giants flashing some serious leather tonight, it could be 7 or 8-2.
Been watching across the dinner table, and the Sox could be a 1/2 dozen ahead right now, they aren’t through no fault of their own (other than Youk’s GIDP).
Droid!!! 6-2 Sox on the rbi single.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • ok. this is the lineup we’re sticking with. dustin is unconcious in the two spot.

    sf rod June 15, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Pedroia to right. 6-2!

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Chickenhoawk with an RBI single. Advances to 2nd.
    Playing effective baseball right now.

    Rob June 15, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • InDemand just died. F*ck. What the hell?

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Phew, it’s back.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:35 pm
  • Tavarez gets someone on the Giants to pop up. I can’t tell if that was a meatball that the Giants player missed, or a good tailing fastball with nice movement.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • “Phew, it’s back.”
    yes. drews bat is back.

    sf rod June 15, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Roberts doubles, Tavarez having trouble with a .220 hitter. Come on, Leather.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • I do not advocate counting outs, but this is, in ideal situations, a 7 inning job to get to Okajima and Papelbon. Tavarez really needs to bear down here and hold the Giants off.
Two down on a nice exchange between Youk and Tavarez. Roberts moves to third.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:42 pm
  • Tavarez “Pete Webers” another ball to Youkilis.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Tavarez has got to be the most entertaining man in baseball. That was the funniest play to first I’ve seen from him yet.

    Scott SF June 15, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • julian goes bowling again on a very nice play at first.

    sf rod June 15, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Wait, did the Sox actually bat that inning? Was that like a four pitch inning for Zito?

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • So, yeah, 5 for 5, 5 runs, 4 RBI. I think we’ve found our new No.1/No. 2 combo.

    Paul SF June 15, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • SSS, Paul.
    Still, I like.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • Those actually watching the game: What were the respective reactions to Roberts and Bonds?

    Paul SF June 15, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Tavarez crumbling. Take a walk, Farrell. JT starting to get hit. NO SLOW HOOKS, TITO.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Didn’t see the first inning, Paul.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • SSS? I figure it has something to do with this being only one game, but I can’t for the life of me figure out the acronym…

    Paul SF June 15, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Small
    Sample
    Size

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • You’re pretty fond of this saying, Paul. It took me a minute or two to get it.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Big out, Feliz pops to short. A bigger out is the next one.

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Great job, Leather! Grounder to Youk ends the threat. To the bottom of the inning, and more runs we do request!

    SF June 15, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • lol, I am. But I thought it was OK. It is a game thread after all ;-)

    Paul SF June 15, 2007, 8:57 pm
  • Great job by Tavarez indeed. His last few starts have been solid — to the point where I’m starting to worry if Lester will do as well.
Anyway, company’s a-comin’. Glad to see the Sox actually have a fairly comfortable lead (fingers crossed)… Ciao!

    Paul SF June 15, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Sox bats have gone to sleep these past two innings. Zito’s looked better, but there’s an element of “hey, we actually got runs, let’s just go home!” to it, for some reason.
On the other hand, that might just be the Shiraz talking.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • Coco reaches on an error by Feliz.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Coco steals second easily. El Vacio with a chance to pad the lead.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Lugo grounds out…again. Is that the two thousandth time he’s grounded out this season?

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • Paul: Roberts got a great standing ovation from the fans. They even cheered him when he got his leadoff hit. Roberts was smiling, tried to signal the crowd to stop cheering him, clearly happy to be back, and the 04 sox players seem happy to see him, even as he was rounding the bases…
Bonds…not so nice. A lot of booing. The problem is, every section of fans seems to have a different anti-Bonds chant, so you can’t actually tell what they’re chanting.

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Drew is ON.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • JD!!! Drew knocks in Coco. Well manufactured. Drew is really swinging better – he was robbed last night of at least two RBIs by Tulowitzki. He seems to have righted the ship over the last week.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • another RBI from Drew!

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • 1/2 in the order having a huge night…Droid bangs one through the hole on the right, that’s Dustin’s fourth hit, to go with Drew’s three.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Drew and Pedroia batting 1 and 2 are 6-6 rest of team is 0-17 but Boston winning 7-2 go figure

    TJ June 15, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • wow
by the way, who came up with the nickname “Droid”? I like it.

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • Wily Mo is like a living Playstation batter – swings at everything, can’t hit anything not straight.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • I did, Max. Welcomem by the way – you new to these parts?

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • and thats now 7-7 and 0-18

    TJ June 15, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Thanks SF. I’m not new, I just don’t comment very often. I’ve been reading your site since sometime last summer, but I’m not usually on my computer during games.

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • What a bizarre evening. I wonder if this has ever happened before, a boxscore like this. I wouldn’t be surprised that if this holds, it would be a first in MLB history.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • Great Site huh Max…. Im glad I found this place last year… so much better then that god awful red sox board on mlb.com

    TJ June 15, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • yea SF 7 runs with them 2 the only one with hits you’d prolly expect more the 1 HR between them for 7 runs

    TJ June 15, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Roberts retired on another solid play by Youk, tossing to Leather for the second out. Nicely done.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • Yeah TJ. I found this site sometime last summer, and it’s great. Do you all read soxaholix.com? That’s the other RS site I read every day.

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Tavarez is hurt, I think. Something looks wrong. Why hasn’t he trainer gone out?
End of the inning on a lazy fly to Manny. I wonder what’s going on with JT?

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Kudos to Tavarez. The first inning had me in fits, I never thought he’d end up going seven. Well done, Leather.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Good looking at-bat from Youk here, who’s been struggling. Good sign, no matter what the result.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • Youk whiffs, after working the count full. Nice looping curveball. Still, a good at-bat.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • This is really remarkable, STILL nobody on the Sox has a hit besides Drew and Droid, and they’ve score 7 runs.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Tek pops out. Is this cool or worrisome, that the Sox have 7 yet 77% of the lineup is inept?

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:40 pm
  • Sweet grab by Drew in foul ground right near the stands.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Here come Barry, against Okakima. First pitch is an inside fastball called a ball, the exact same pitch that Ortiz got tossed on.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • Jeez, that Shiraz has ruined my typing abilities. Barry singles.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Tina Cervasio in the process of ruining Okajima’s season through a relatively interesting piece of investigative sideline journalism, detailing HO’s warmup routing, talking about how great it works, jinxing his next 20 appearances.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Hideki goes to 0-2 on Molina, then gets him on a soft grounder to Lugo, forcing Barry at second. To the bottom of the eighth we go.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:49 pm
  • Coco ruins the potentially historic boxscore, with the baseknock to left. Lead man on.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Coco gets a hit.

    Max June 15, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • Lugo walks. Two on, none out for JD.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:56 pm
  • JD rips one to deep center, out far enough to get Crisp to third. Another good swing, though.

    SF June 15, 2007, 9:57 pm
  • Droid up with the chance to go 5-5.
Dustin down in the count 0-2, fouls one off, then gaps one! Crisp scores, Lugo scores from first. Pedroia with a MONSTER night.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • Pedroia for President.

    Scott SF June 15, 2007, 10:00 pm
  • damn! 5-5 for Droid

    Max June 15, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • Wow. Pedroia. 3 singles, a double, a HR, 5 RBI. 5/5.

    Devine June 15, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • Wild pitch moves DP to third. Whiffy Mo with a chance at a RBI, if only it weren’t for that little “K” problem.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • WMP high hopper to Vizquel plates Droid. 10-2 Sox.
Man, this is so needed. Hopefully Tito won’t slot Cora in for Pedroia tomorrow.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • Manny and Youk walk in succession, Lowell up with two down, two on.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:07 pm
  • Lowell lobs a soft behind first that Sweeney grabs, inning over. To the bottom of the ninth. Donnelly may have hurt himself warming up, we may see Pineiro.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:08 pm
  • Finally, the Yankees lose. Way to go, Mets!

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • Yep, Pinhead in. I wonder what happened to Donnelly?

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Will this mean a Manny DC return to the bigs?

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • One down, popout to Pedroia.

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • 5-4-3 DP to end the game. What a relief, lead back up to 8.5, Drew/Pedroia do the job at the top, Crisp and Lugo actually get on a few times at the bottom. A good night all around.
Good night to everyone, which means to just me, I think!

    SF June 15, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • Red Sox win! Yankees lose! The natural order of things is restored (for today, at least).
3 things to be happy about: Pedroia and Drew’s hits, and Roger’s loss.

    Max June 15, 2007, 10:18 pm
  • There must be a definition of “natural” I wasn’t aware of. =P

    Lar June 16, 2007, 1:43 am
  • i heard that the sox are already planning another “dave roberts day” after he muffed that fly ball by drew…also, you can look for a “barry zito day” to be scheduled soon…
