Daytime Baseball: Sox-Phils Gamer III

An afternoon game is like a gift from the baseball gods (or the scheduler, whichever). Today is the rubber match between the Sox and Phillies. Justin Masterson v. Kyle Kendrick. Work wasting awaits.

  • Holy sh*t, JD Drew has found his effing stroke.

  • Lowell follows with his own homer! It’s 4-0 Sox and nobody’s out in the 1st. Woooooooooooot!

    Devine June 18, 2008, 1:17 pm
  • Walking Victorino comes back to bite as Howard singles him in. He gets Burrell after that. 4-1 after 1.

  • Why would they pinch hit for Coco?

    z118 June 18, 2008, 2:08 pm
  • I just used ESPN’s Gamecast for the first time. It’s kind of unnecessary but kind of cute and sweet at the same time.
Masterson holding his own against an insane lineup..

  • Yeah, I’m watching on Gamecast, too. Why was Coco lifted? Anyone know?

  • gameday says coco has a hurt wrist

  • some kind of hand injury Joe said.

  • Drew has just gone crazy.

  • hey I have tickets for Friday’s game, driving up from Jersey to see a little Wakey magic – please tell me the parade isn’t friday. Please?

  • Hope the Coco injury isn’t serious. He’s been on fire, recently. Gotta wonder if he’s better suited for the Nation League…

    MrBlackthorne June 18, 2008, 2:29 pm
  • Coco’s still got an OBP of .300. I’ll pass in favor of Ellsbury or Moss any day.
Drew now 4-for-4. It’s a crime that he’s not higher in the All-Star voting, though I can’t imagine him not being selected as a reserve.

  • JD making us JD lovers love even more. Awesome run here, hopefully the certain-to-occur cold streak won’t be as proportionally cold as the current hotness.

    SF June 18, 2008, 3:05 pm
  • Another couple stranded. It seems like the Sox should be up by more than 7-2, but five run leads are nothing to scoff at.
Gotta run for the rest of the afternoon, please hold on, Sox!

  • Paul, I always felt that the injury Coco sustained early in the 2006 season hurt him more than any of us know. I realize we didn’t get a great sampling of his talent before he got hurt, but he started that season on a tear. I really thought Coco/Loretta was going to be the best 1-2 in the game after the first couple games. There was no reason to believe Coco would under-perform as he has. This, of course, if totally beside the point.
I totally agree with you. At this point, I’d rather see Ellsbury get the AB’s. It’s just, with Manny hurt, it was nice having a guy like Coco get hot when it was needed, that’s all.

  • Didn’t realize Masterson had run up such a high pitch count. Gone after only five innings. Still, another solid performance from the rookie. I think he’s blowing away expectations right now. Easy to forget he started the year in AA.

    Paul SF June 18, 2008, 3:10 pm
  • I agree, re: the Coco injury. I took him at least a year to get back on track, but even after that, he seems to be only good for one hot month a year that artificially inflates his replacement-level offense the other six months of the regular season. Of course, his defense is still amazing.

  • Hansen…so good here and there, so terrible elsewhere (it’s the walk and the wild pitch that bug me in this particular inning). 7-4.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:34 pm
  • Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Hansen?
    Yeah? Ok, just making sure.

    LocklandSF June 18, 2008, 3:34 pm
  • Delcarmen in to…stop…the…bleeding?

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:35 pm
  • I kept waiting for the bullpen to put it all together, but I think it’s going to be a truggle all year.

    Paul SF June 18, 2008, 3:37 pm
  • Rollins walks, guranteeing Utley’s plate appearance. Marvelous. Nobody out.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:38 pm
  • One down on the popout. C’mon, Utley, roll one over to 2nd base…

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:41 pm
  • And that’s two. Uno mas…it’s Howard.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:42 pm
  • Howard K’s…and I breathe again. Jesus, Hansen.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:44 pm
  • Delcarmen comes up HUGE in that spot.

    Paul SF June 18, 2008, 3:45 pm
  • Great job on the whole by MDC. Scary set of dudes to be facing…

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:45 pm
  • Rudy Seanez and J.C. Romero on the same team. Heh.

    Paul SF June 18, 2008, 3:46 pm
  • Pedroia singles after Ellsbury’s K. What will the red-hot Drew do this time?

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:51 pm
  • Drew makes outs? What a loser.
Moves Pedroia to 2nd. They’ll walk Lowell to get to Casey…

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:53 pm
  • Not that inning. Okay, who’s in for the 8th? Oki? (Again?) Maybe Delcarmen for a batter or two, then Papelbon for a 4-out save or something?

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • anybody have any thoughts on why tito opted not to pinch hit for lopez in the sox half of the 7th? seemed like the perfect spot for cora to hit for lopez and then enter the game for lugo who was in the 8th spot. looked like a no brainer double switch to me. instead lopez k’s and then is removed from the game for hansen. what am i missing here? is tito that far removed from his NL days?

    sf rod June 18, 2008, 3:58 pm
  • Delcarmen gets two quick outs.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 3:59 pm
  • Third out is on called strikes. Magnificent job by Delcarmen today.
rod…I wondered if he was worried about having a short bench in general today or something with Coco already out…

    Devine June 18, 2008, 4:03 pm
  • Tek’s average dips to .240.

    Devine June 18, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • They go down easy for Papelbon.
    Buh-bye, Philly. Maybe we’ll see you later…
