Derek and Gabrielle: Will This “Union” Be Forever?

Derek Jeter was involved with Jessica Biel for two months. That’s like a 40 year marriage in Derek years. And children, I hate to upset you, but your old mom and dad are getting divorced. Dad found  another lady:
She’s Gabrielle Union. Could this be love?

  • I’d say she’s definitely an upgrade over Jessica Biel. I wonder how their VORP’s compare.

  • Can’t believe Sam got bounced from Top Chef!
Ilan vs. Marcel? That’s the Mets vs the Sox of reality tv. No good can come of it.

    YF January 24, 2007, 11:20 pm
  • I’m rooting for Marcel. Seriously, no one (including Sam) is likeable on that show. That display by Elia was pathetic.

    Nick-YF January 24, 2007, 11:22 pm
  • Agreed. I’m rooting for Captain Foam myself. And that little bullshit episode was Ilan’s idea. He moved my pot. Boo hoo. It wasn’t even on a flame!
Getting back to the subject at hand. I’d like an over/under on how long until DJ is associated with Friday Night Lights hottie Minka Kelly.
    Minka Minka Minka…

    YF January 24, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • Minka might have already happened for all we know. He’s quick and stealth.

  • I just got done watching the first part of the season finale. My girl is totally pissed that her boyfriend Sam got sent home. On to part two.
My favorite guy on the show was Michael, just because he was such a real dude. And funny. Even if he had questionable chops. He’s certainly the guy I would have had the most fun at a baseball game followed by some beers and burgers.

    attackgerbil January 24, 2007, 11:54 pm
  • Aw crap. I thought the Top Chef finale was back to back. Oh well. Wait until next week.

    attackgerbil January 24, 2007, 11:57 pm
  • Thanks for spoiling my Tivo’d Top Chef, YF.
Ilan is the David Eckstein of that show: competent (perhaps), seems to make the occasionally over-one’s-expectations dish, but in the end is really just a snot-nose, sometimes too-earnest mediocrity. He was basically Robin to Sam’s Batman.
Next week: moratorium on Top Chef references until Friday – we watch it the next night, sans commercials.
Gerb: the show is “Top Chef”, not “Top Tailgate Buddy”. Michael was not worthy. I was pulling for Sam.

  • There’s a considerable dating-life similarity between a certain air-headed celebutard and a certain shortstop.
Derek “Paris” Jeter. It has a ring.
    (Actually, four of them…)
    Calling “The Baseball Encyclopedia”!

  • All I wanted to do was find out about DJ’s new girl and I just ruined Top Chef for myself…..Uggh you guys stink.

  • I am with you, Trisk. We need to have a “spoiler alert” or something. I got screwed too. Just like the next thing with a pulse that happens to talk to Jeter.

    SF January 25, 2007, 8:54 am
  • How’s this for a random assemblage (from the Boston Herald’s gossip page):
“Southie bar owner Paul Adamson of Shenanigans and The Clark Bar fame celebrating his 40th birthday in the Bahamas with Yankees short-stud Derek Jeter, “Shark” star James Woods and former Knicks superstar Patrick Ewing at the Atlantis.”

    SF January 25, 2007, 9:37 am
  • …do you think his pr firm writes his pick-up lines?…

    dc January 25, 2007, 10:43 am
  • “I’m Derek Jeter, and I’m proud to have been at the same bar with both you and Justin Morneau. Though Justin went home with you yesterday, I will not stop in my quest to bed you, despite last night’s disappointments”.

    SF January 25, 2007, 10:49 am
  • I don’t think Paris and Jetes have much in common whatsoever. She’s a publicity whore famous for nothing but being a rich publicity whore. Jeter has actual real-life accomplishments. Yes, he dates a lot of women, and the tabloids do their damndest to pry into his extracurricular activities, but he doesn’t actually flaunt them at all, beyond going out to top clubs and resorts, which is his right and why shouldn’t he. There are almost never pictures of him out with these women or entering/leaving clubs. He’s a discrete superstar, living a good life. There’s nothing wrong with that. Paris Hilton is anything but discrete. I didn’t realize SF was such a puritan.

    YF January 25, 2007, 11:04 am
  • that was funny sf…thanks for picking up on the straight line i dropped…good one…thank god jeter doesn’t think dating is a team sport where individual honors just aren’t important…

    dc January 25, 2007, 11:07 am
  • “Jeter has actual real-life accomplishments”
Yes, like a scent! And tons of watch ads plastered all over the place! Jeter doesn’t crave attention? Are you serious?!
You use the word “whore” in discussing Hilton, but Jeter, your hero, gets no such sexist slur, even though he appears in countless advertisements for money, dates countless women seemingly at whim, and endorses a perfume. Because Paris Hilton can’t hit a baseball she deserves a different set of standards than Jeter? I think there’s some base sexism apparent in your word choice.

    SF January 25, 2007, 11:13 am
  • sf, while i’ve made my disdain for name-calling quite clear [normally you ignore the transgressions, so it’s good to see you step up], so shame on yf…but i can’t believe you’re defending hilton’s behavior/character by trashing jeter’s…we get that jeter hasn’t cured cancer, but you have to admit that as trivial as baseball might seem in the grand scheme of life, the guy has had a career that most folks, in and out of the sport, would envy…add to that his charitable work, and despite his rather calculated words and demeanor, he’s not in bad shape as a human being…i think yf’s point is to wonder what hilton has accomplished except to be born rich, and call attention to herself with her outlandish behavior…

    dc January 25, 2007, 11:34 am
  • Hey, I am no fan of Paris Hilton or her character. But I don’t like the ease with which she’s demeaned as a “whore” (publicity or otherwise), while Jeter is unconditonally lauded as a suave playboy. This is gender stereotyping; one would never consider using the term “whore” in any capacity with Jeter, and that’s not because he doesn’t sleep around, it’s simply because he’s not a woman.

    SF January 25, 2007, 11:43 am
  • That’s a nice bit of jujitsu SF. But this is tired. The sexism is coming from you–slandering Jeter because he dates a lot of women. Hilton is a publicity whore. She has achieved fame by her attention-grabbing party-girl antics, that’s it. Jeter has worked since he was a kid to achieve success in his profession. Publicity is, to a degree, attendant with that profession, but that’s not it’s raison d’etre. With his success have come advertising opportunities, which he has taken advantage of. They are, in general, tasteful, regardless of what you think of the products. Appearing on commericals and billboard advertising is quite a bit different than persistently exhibiting embarassing public behavior, and generally contributing to the degredation of the public culture.
This debate is very far beneath my dignitude. If you can’t find the difference between Jeter and Hilton, that’s your sad and pathetic problem. But I’d note that Tom Brady’s reported personal relationships haven’t seemed to reduce your enthusiasm/admiration for him. Enough already. Do your self a favor and quit this one. I’m out.

    YF January 25, 2007, 11:50 am
  • …you’ve made your displeasure with yf’s characterization of hilton’s thirst for publicity clear already…his use of the word “whore”, while inappropriate [supposedly name-calling is prohibited on this site, but i’ve seen that the outrage is situational], he used it in the sense that she craves publicity, and not with a sexual connotation, still an ugly word, but with different intent…he apparently doesn’t believe jeter’s love of the limelight is on the same level…if yf had called hilton a “publicity hound”, would you call him out for calling her a dog?…we get that you don’t like the word, but what about his point that jeter has a better life resume?…

    dc January 25, 2007, 11:51 am
  • So if you were DJ and had everything he has what would you do? Sit at home and read the bible? Please.

    Triskaidekaphobia January 25, 2007, 12:01 pm
  • My God SF, the depth of your hatred of Jeter astounds. Take yf’s advice and stop this silliness.
And please don’t come back with your usual ” i really respect and admire Jeter” line this time. You’ve long since shown your hand…

    Andrews January 25, 2007, 12:03 pm
  • I didn’t use the word “whore”, in any context. YF can run away from this, but as a writer he knows full-well the power of his words. Had he called her a “publicity hound” I would have no issue – it’s a pretty benign term. “Whore” is not. YF used that term.
As for Brady, he was in a monogamous relationship (supposedly) for nearly the past four years. Where was the material in this for a Yanks-Sox site?

    SF January 25, 2007, 12:19 pm
  • I want to get back to the Top Chef thing: please, no spoilers next week!

    SF January 25, 2007, 12:52 pm
  • yf’s not running from anything…you are…from the point that suggesting jeter’s life’s work and lifestyle somehow is as negative as the perceptions about hilton’s…get over the words he used already, i don’t see an apology forthcoming from him…i like bantering with you sf, but just once i’d like to hear you say you might have gotten one wrong…

    dc January 25, 2007, 12:58 pm
  • WOW. Interesting commentary here. It’s funny because DJ is successful and because he’s worked hard and been disciplined in one area, we all have been duped into thinking that he is the same way in another area (dating). It seems to me that it is because of his almost overboard work ethic to achieve in the one area that he is so lax with women. He seems to have alot going on. He constantly says he wants to settle down, but look at who he dates…young (early 20’s) starlets who do not even know themselves yet and so concerned with the superficial hollywood life. Yeah, that’s wife material. Whatever, it’s his problem, but he really does have one. Guys look up to him because they are living through him and that is sad.

    FL January 25, 2007, 3:41 pm
  • The pro- and anti-Jeter comments aside, I think we can agree that this doesn’t seem right:
Woman who has a new man every couple months, is assumed to be sleeping with them: “Slut, whore, easy.”
Man who has a new woman every couple months, is assumed to be sleeping with them: “Respected, admired, awesome.”

    Paul SF January 25, 2007, 3:57 pm
  • “Publicity whore” is a general term, and isn’t sex-dependent, as far as I know. Let’s not get carried away with this, nor should we confuse “whore” with “publicity whore” – terms with an overlapping word, but totally different in spirit and in definition.
Not to say there’s no double standard (in general), but this shouldn’t be a YFSF discussion..

    Lar January 25, 2007, 4:09 pm
  • FWIW, Union isn’t exactly young, and Biel isn’t “early 20s”. I don’t really follow DJ’s personal life, so I can’t say much about his earlier choices..

    Lar January 25, 2007, 4:12 pm
  • I think we can agree that this doesn’t seem right:

    I don’t know. You’re saying that’s a bad thing?
    Or your dream girl?

  • Thanks for keeping it classy, John.
I wasn’t really commenting, Lar, on the “publicity whore/whore” distinction. I agree there is one. I was just throwing a comment out there.

    Paul SF January 25, 2007, 4:34 pm
  • you’re absolutely correct paul…it’s a terrible double-standard…and lar’s right because he got the point that yf was trying to make originally…

    dc January 25, 2007, 5:07 pm
  • Paul – that wasn’t directed toward you in itself, just a general comment on that particular term (the publicity one). At least for me it’s a common (enough) term that the root, however subconscious, doesn’t count for much..

    Lar January 25, 2007, 5:18 pm
  • Just to clarify Lar, I know Union is not early 20’s….and there is no confirmation he is dating her either. He just flirted with her, as I am sure he flirts with many women who are attractive. Biel is in her mid twenties, which surprised me a bit, because of my earlier comment. I did not say it to go through the list that he has dated, but to sort of shed light on the fact that what he says is not reflected in his behavior all of the time, and I personally do not believe he is what the media makes him out to be. If he was a regular “joe” he would so be a jerk.

    FL January 25, 2007, 5:27 pm
  • you’re absolutely correct paul…it’s a terrible double-standard…and lar’s right because he got the point that yf was trying to make originally…
You are right, dc. I am comfortable admitting that I overreacted to YF’s use of the term “publicity whore”. But my sentiment that the term “whore” is far easier to use when applied to a woman stands, which was the main thing I was trying to convey. As stated earlier, a man might have been referred to as a “publicity hound”, something far less demeaning in tone, and one which would not have illicited my reaction. Sorry if my point got muddled in a bit of antagonism.
And I don’t hate Jeter, I am sick of trying to convince YFs of that. I like teasing, for sure, but I don’t hate Jeter. Paul does.

    SF January 25, 2007, 5:39 pm
  • i think we agree sf…the word “whore” is ugly no matter what the context…it was me who used the word “hound”, and not in reference to men, just that it’s a less offensive term in general than the one that was used…yf’s point was more that jeter’s celebrity is collateral because of what he does for a living…hilton’s seeks her celebrity status somewhat aggressively, and does so in a sometimes outrageous fashion…i know you don’t hate jeter, and let me be first in line to defend you on that one…but paul does?…what?…how dare he?

    dc January 25, 2007, 5:44 pm
  • Jeter = Good.
Jeter = Not on the Red Sox.
    Jeter = On the Yankees.
Jeter = Fawned over by sycophantic press.
    Jeter = Hated by me.
None of these things by itself would cause me to hate Jeter. The combination just drives me up the wall. I still respect him as a fine ballplayer and Hall of Famer whom I’d gladly take on my team. But yeah. Hate him.

    Paul SF January 25, 2007, 6:06 pm
  • Speaking of attention whores, how about that Gary Sheffield? I’m sure his book will come out at just the right time for the press to go apeshit over it.
