DM a Bargain? Sori to Cubs for 8 Years, $136 Million

Last season the Cubs put out a starting lineup with Neifi Perez, Tony Womack, and assorted other no-hit wonders; with Derek Lee out, the team’s best hitter, aside from Aramis Ramirez, seemed to be Carlos Zambrano, the team’s ace pitcher. So whattaya do this season? Hire Lou Piniella to distract the crowds at the Friendly Confines with his kooky antics, and sign Alfonso Soriano to what appears to be the most ridiculous contract in MLB history. Eight years? Um, okay….

  • We made numerous comments last year about how Manny’s contract, dwindling in length and dollars, was actually quite reasonable, considering the performance of Ramirez. We stand by that comment. If Theo wants to move him, certainly contracts like the one for Soriano can only help. This is a crazy contract. Who is his agent, Michael Corleone?

  • Aye Carumba! Like I said on the 50 million? thread, the free agent spending this year is spinning out of control.

  • Considering RFK stadium is a pitchers park, and Sori still whacked 46 HR, he could put up some big numbers in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

  • A .280 hitter, who will hit 30-40 dingers, steal 40 bases, and approach 40 doubles. Strikeouts were way up last year, as was caught-stealing. Seventeen million per over eight. I don’t honestly know how I feel about this. I was against NY trading him to Texas for ARod in the first place and have watched Sori closely through his whole career, and now am an ARod defender. I like the player; he’s unique at the plate right now, but that’s a lot of money. It’s especially interesting happening at a time when the entire Tribune corporation may be on the block. I don’t know what to think. I guess good for Sori. That’s a lot of ice cream.

  • I think you meant “Derek Lee”, as Carlos Lee was on the Brewers.

  • That is a LONG time to be paying $17m a year. He’s already 30!

  • Good God. What the hell is Hendry thinking?
When A-Rod and Manny got their big dollar deals, both were still in their twenties and had asserted themselves as consistent, All-Star producers. Soriano’s had what? Two or three outstanding seasons? And he’s almost 31?
    Absolutely ridiculous.

    not so good
How does this affect JD Drew’s price tage? How does this affect every free agent’s price tag?
