Double Down: Braves-Sox Gamer I

Here’s your thread for today’s opener, the second of consecutive day-night doubleheaders for our lads.  Daisuke Matsuzaka faces off against Anthony Lerew.  Lerew is something of an unknown quantity, while Daisuke comes in off his best start of the year, having hurled a complete game shutdown of the vaunted Tigers’ offense.  Sitting on a 10 game lead in the AL East, grabbing this opener would take a little pressure of Devern Hansack (who starts this evening’s game in place of Josh Beckett), put pressure on the rest of the division; we would love to see a Sox’ victory being posted on the scoreboard at Shea right as Darrell Rasner strides to the hill.

Go Sox!

  • Thanks, but as a SF in NYC, I don’t think that helps me much…
I find E.I. to be pretty bad at including make-up games in their b’cast schedule… I’d like to get all non-FCC blackout games for my $160, thankyouverymuch.

    JB May 19, 2007, 1:11 pm
  • I agree JB, I am getting nothing here either in NC. NESN is always blacked out here. The only games I have seen have been on ESPN/MASN.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:15 pm
  • Effective inning for Dice K. 12 pitches, 1 hit allowed and 1 K.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:16 pm
  • Lugo takes the third pitch over the monster for a homer!!
    Sox 1-0

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:17 pm
  • Lerew with 10IP this season so far and has given up 3 HR’s.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:19 pm
  • Youk flied out deep to right. Papi then draws the walk.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:21 pm
  • Manny with a double to left, Papi advances to 3rd.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:22 pm
  • Braves IBB Drew. Not sure if this is smart. They are going after Lowell who has seemed to hit well with RISP. At least better than Drew of late.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:24 pm
  • Villareal up and throwing in the Pen. Lowell flies out to center, not deep enough to let Papi come home.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:26 pm
  • Tek flies out to left.
Damn, Sox strand the bags full. Get two hits, 2 BB’s and manage only one run off of Lugo’s homer.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:27 pm
  • squandered.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 1:29 pm
  • DP, Daisuke through two innings, only 18 pitches.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:32 pm
  • Anyone have the game live?

    Rob May 19, 2007, 1:35 pm
  • Nope. Blacked out here in NYC.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:36 pm
  • Lerew already at 40 pitches.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:39 pm
  • YOUK! Jack puts the Sox up 3-0. Damn, is KY hot.
I am thinking that if Youkilis ever loses his nerve, his nickname will surely become “Jelly”.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:41 pm
  • 45 pitches and counting. Ortiz singles, bringing up Manny.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:42 pm
  • Manny flies out, but Lerew is at 48 pitches. The Sox have 5 hits, 2BB, 3 runs, 4 LOB, through two.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:44 pm
  • MLB Gameday is incompetently slow right now. It just showed the Braves going down in only two outs, Sox coming to bat.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:52 pm
  • Lerew yanked after two innings. Does Cox remember that this is a doubleheader?
On the other hand, Lerew was clearly overmatched, so this way the Braves may not be 6 behind after three innings. And Smoltz better have some innings in him tonight.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:55 pm
  • LowellewoL. Two bagger with one out.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:57 pm
  • Villareal already up to fifteen pitches, only one out. This is shaping up nicely. Varitek walks, 1/2.

    SF May 19, 2007, 1:59 pm
  • Very curious that they’d already pull Lerew. Whether the results end up okay, from the way Villareal is pitching, most of their bullpen may see action in the first game. Cripes. GIDP for Coco.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:01 pm
  • Gah, another squander. GIDP for Crisp. That’s 9 baserunners, 3 runs, in 3 innings. Not complaining about the lead, but that’s not a good ratio. Should be ahead by more.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:02 pm
  • Smoltz has traditionally been awesome against the Sox. An ERA barely above 1 with 27 Ks in 24 IP. They should get a pretty good start from him, assuming his pinky finger is a non-issue.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:03 pm
  • Rent singles (2-2, putting the shiv in his former organization), then Larry whiffs. One down for Andruw Jones.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:06 pm
  • Orsillo sounds like he’s trying out a new line when Dice strikes out a batter: “You’ve been Dice-K’d!”. Feh.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:07 pm
  • Blech, that’s a terrible line. Did his six year old kid tell him to say that?

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:08 pm
  • Andruw Jones whiffs. Two down for McCann.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:09 pm
  • Pretty sure I’ve heard him use that line a few times.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:12 pm
  • McCann down on a pop to Lugo. Daisuke with 44 pitches through 4, 30 strikes, 14 balls.
Gonna have to cut out soon, kid waking up from the nap so have to do the Dad thing.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:12 pm
  • Mark Redman. So…Cox isn’t trying to keep this game close?

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:13 pm
  • Cox appears to think this is an extended spring-training game, the way he’s bringing pitchers in. I can’t believe he’s throwing in the towel already.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:15 pm
  • blacked out in so cal on MLB extra innings.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 2:17 pm
  • Redman likes pitching with a full count thusfar.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:18 pm
  • I can’t believe he’s throwing in the towel already.
Except he’s not, or at least the Sox aren’t letting him. They’re only three up with 5 innings to go, hardly a foregone conclusion. The Sox’ bats are back to being dead, so this game is not over by any means.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:22 pm
  • I can’t watch the game, frustratingly, but even without the visuals I get a sense of impending disappointment. Not sure why.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:26 pm
  • I’m not saying that the game is over, SF. I just don’t understand what the reasoning is for Cox to keep sending out new pitchers like he is.
And Coco looking positively Mays-esque out there with the over the shoulder catch!

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:27 pm
  • I do like the fact that has in-game video highlights gratis, so I can see the Lugo and Youkilis shots. Good feature.

    SF May 19, 2007, 2:28 pm
  • Dice K gives up the first batter base-hit again, but gets out of it with a deep flyball out and then the double play.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:29 pm
  • Papi singles to center-left, and Manny gets a bad-bounce single past Jones at 3rd. First and second, none out.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:33 pm
  • Drew singles off the lefty- bases loaded now. Lowell up.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:35 pm
  • MIKEY!!!!!!

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:37 pm
  • Lowell CRUSHES one way over everything to left. Grand-slam puts the Sox up 7-0!!

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:38 pm
  • Lowell is making a case for a contract for 2008 in Boston.

    Anonymous May 19, 2007, 2:41 pm
  • The Braves are helping out Dice K with his pitch count- 2 out on 4 pitches.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:52 pm
  • Dice is just dealing right now. He’s approaching scary-good.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:55 pm
  • Anon (or maybe it was you, Ayuh). Find a list of the FA corner IFs after this season. Those guys make a case for a 2008 contract for Lowell with or without his GS.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 2:55 pm
  • Ayuh, With the double header today, throwing in the towel would be leaving one of the pitchers in and saving his bullpen for the second game of the day, the fact that he was running more pitchers in meant he was still trying to win the game down only 3 runs, that could change now thanks to Mikey!

    LocklandSF May 19, 2007, 2:55 pm
  • 4 pitchers in 5 innings. 121 pitches between them. this bodes well for the first game of a weekend series.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 2:57 pm
  • Jones misplays Papi’s flyball into a double. That ball only hit the wall about 6 inches from the bottom.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 2:58 pm
  • It wasn’t me, Quo, but I did look at who’s available. Lowell could be a real good signing for the Sox- there isn’t a lot out there. Well, there is that guy playing for NY now that we nearly picked up a few years ago from Texas.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:03 pm
  • 5 ribbies for Lowell today. Wow.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:04 pm
  • Well, there is him Ayuh. And he could be a good signing, as long as he doesn’t want too many years, though I say that as Lowell collects his fifth RBI of the day, and now stands a 3B short of the cycle. (…doubtful). I mean, the best of the best after Lowell and A-Rod at both 1B and 3B is complete crap.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 3:06 pm
  • Yikes. Got too happy with the pronouns. I meant Lowell as far as not wanting too many years.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 3:07 pm
  • what happened with Drew and Lowell my thing froze i guess.

    Anonymous May 19, 2007, 3:07 pm
  • is every ball to the warning track like gameday is showing? is the wind blowing out?

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 3:09 pm
  • I agree with you there, Ayuh. It’s those long multi-year contracts that really kill a team (see Yankees, NY). Hopefully Lowell’s agent won’t insist on a 4 yr deal.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:10 pm
  • Lots of deep fly balls today, Rod- Jones made a nice catch earlier.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:11 pm
  • Coco clears the bases with a double after a 10 pitch atbat. 10-Zip, Sox.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:13 pm
  • crazy good at bat by coco. an eleven pitch base clearing double.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 3:14 pm
  • isn’t atlanta a quality team? this bullpen looks like cheese whip.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 3:21 pm
  • Willy Mo looks lost in left field. Can you score a double and a single due to “Defensive Indifference”?

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:31 pm
  • Or Defensive Idiocy. He does make some huge misjudgments that make it hard to give him errors sometimes.

    QuoSF May 19, 2007, 3:50 pm
  • 104 pitches through 8 for Dice, and he’s done for the day. Another great outing for him.
Dice is getting close to being untouchable. It looks like he’s fixed his problem with pitching out of the stretch, and if he can get 4 pitches (fastball, curve, splitter, change) over for strikes consistently, he could be as good as he was hyped coming in.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 3:57 pm
  • another 11 pitch at bat ending with a hit. this time for cora. good patience at the plate today.

    sf rod May 19, 2007, 4:04 pm
  • Final 13-3
    Now up 10 1/2 games

    Rob May 19, 2007, 4:11 pm
  • Snyder mops up for the Sox, and they win. 3 hours until the next game.
Yanks had the bases loaded against Glavine in the first with one out, but can only score one run.

    Ayuh - SF May 19, 2007, 4:12 pm
  • Sox winning pct now at .707

    Rob May 19, 2007, 4:56 pm
  • Someone putting up another gamer or no…

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 7:36 pm
  • …well Hansack looked good for two batters…then fell behind and threw Chipper a fastball. Not good.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • Crisp just misses a homer, and settles instead for a really long double to RF. Anyone else playing right and that’s a triple…but Francoeur has a fricken cannon and he stops at 2nd.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 7:48 pm
  • Actually Hansack seemed pretty good. One mistake that got pounded. What’ll eb important is how he rebounds next inning. Hopefully the Sox can knock Coco in and we’ll at least tie it.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 7:49 pm
  • Poor Hansack, who might need more of thos 13 runs than Daisuke, gets the B-team tonight.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 7:51 pm
  • Manny swings at ball one.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • Then takes ball 1a and strike 2.
    Ball 2.
Aand swings at ball 3. Dammti Manny.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 7:55 pm
  • Smnoltz struggling early. Was helped A LOT by Manny.
Maybe Hinske can make him pay

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Fellooooow Sooooox fans.. where arrrrre you?

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • I’m here, Dio- not feeling good about this half of the double-header

    Anonymous May 19, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • I feel bad for people who paid to see this game…they get the sh*t lineup and the AAAA pitcher against John Smoltz.
This is going to be a long, depressing f*cking ballgame. The Yanks losing does nothing to make me feel better, since…uhh…tomorrow is Tim Hudson vs Kason Gabbard. This was probably the better matchup and Hansack looks shitty.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • 2-0 Braves, one out.. top of the second.
Nor am I. However.. Im sticking it out. I have faith in this team’s ability to work some major miracles. If we can chase Smotlz early and have Hansack not completely ruin us (I’ll be happy if you limit it to 4 or 5, Devern), we can get to there exhauste dbullpen.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • Oh, and the rain. That can’t help someone who relies on a bunch of breaking pitches…and it can’t be fun for the crowd, which has turned deathly silent since the first.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • So I’m gonna stay, but I’d say this game is a swing or two away from being over. Fortunately, Willie Harris isn’t exactly a bopper…

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • Actually, I feel better about our A-linup and Gabbard than this game. Gabbard was not bad for a while last year and our A lineup rocks the house.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • I have a hard time feeling a lot of enthusiasm for a pitcher whose name sounds vaguely obscene.

    Anonymous May 19, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • Ok. NOW I’;ve given up. What a horrible bottom of the second. No body worked the count. WIly Mo, just cause you hit a bomb earlier does NOT mean you swing at the first pitch fromthe likes of Smoltz.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 8:18 pm
  • PawSox update.
LEster went 3.1 innings giving up a double and a walk, both in the first inning, and collected two strikeouts. He threw 48 pitches, 29 for strikes.
Jacoby Ellsbury went 3 for 5, going a homerun short of the cycle. He also stole a base.
Craig HAnsen threw a perfect inning of releif (gasp!), striking out one.

    Dionysus May 19, 2007, 8:26 pm
  • Oh good. Went to take a shower, come back, and it’s 3-0 Atlanta with Smoltz perfect since the first, and Hinske made an error Youkilis never would. Couple of lineouts for Boston though…hit hard? Guess it doesn’t matter since he’s only needed 48 pitches to go through 3, while Hansack’s already at 75 with two down in the 4th…
And of course, Johnson hits the 0-2 pitch off the wall. This is mostly Hinske’s fault, but that was an awful f*cking pitch…

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • Did anyone see that the Sox A Advanced team in Lancaster Calif, who are one of the best offensive teams in all of Minor League baseball lost last nite 30-0 to a Padres farm team.

    TJ May 19, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • And Lancaster is losing 9-0 already tonite in the bottom of the 2nd

    TJ May 19, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • Yeah. Kris Johnson got shelled in the 30-0 game, and he’s one of the Sox’ better prospects. The 2006 draft-class is not off to a good pro start…
Good thing Boston won game 1 today, because they’re in position to lose the next two. Not exactly thrilled with the matchups against NY, either…would not be surprised to see Schilling get shelled again.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • The 2006 draft-class is not off to a good pro start…
Aaron Bates just hit his 10th homer of the season and Josh Papelbon has been great, both from the 06 class

    TJ May 19, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • The Lancaster team only has great offense because they have the best hitters’ park in A ball. Away from their home field, they suck.
Meanwhile, Joel Pineiro picking up where Hansack led off. This game is going about how I was afraid it would. I also like the Gabbard-Hudson matchup better than this one. I’ve always been iffy on Hansack…

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • OK…
Justin Masterson, Kris Johnson, Daniel Bard (DL), and Jason Place are off to miserable starts. Bates and Lars Anderson have been solid. Papelbon is a fringe prospect with a possible future as a Chad Bradford…
    More importantly…it’s 6-0…Pineiro sucks.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • First-pitch grounder mercifully ends the inning. Now it’s time for one of those seven-run rallies by the vaunted Red Sox role players :-P

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Also, based on what little I know about Daniel Bard, I’m fairly pissed off that he was even drafted. He strikes me as yet another one of those hard-throwing, can’t-hit-the-broad-side-of-a-barn types that never pan out…or who get dumped by the team that drafted them only to find salvation at some other club. Either scenario does us no good.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Yeah, Michael Bowden, who was not part of the 06 class, was the only thing Lancaster had going for it, and he’s already been called up to Portland, which now has the kick-*ss Bowden-Buccholz combo. God, I can’t wait to see that in 2009.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • Lowell just beat out an infield single?? I refuse to belive it.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:10 pm
  • Wow, soxprospects moved Buchholz above Ellsbury in the rankings. Of course, his numbers this season so far are better then Hughes’ 2006 AA numbers…I’m not saying he’s close to Hughes’ level, but wow.
Lowell hit a hard grounder at Smoltz that he hit with his glove, it popped up in the air behind him and landed well in front of Renteria. Nothing anyone could do with it. Not that it matters…Smoltz is a pretty good pitcher.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Smoltz pitching a gem. I wish the Sox would at least make this interesting.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • I don’t get too concerned with the struggles of the 2006 draft class with guys like Ellsbury, Buccholz and Bowden coming up. I think Masterson and Johnson will figure it out. I wasn’t entirely thrilled with Place and Bard as draftees either, so I’m not sure about them.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • Walking Willie Harris = inexcusable.
GameDay says Hansack left the game with a hand/wrist injury. Thankfully, he was only needed for the one start, and there’s Gabbard and Pauley behind him…

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • First blowout of the season. Not a whole lot of fun. I’m ready to give up on the Joel Pineiro experiment now…cut the piece of sh*t or convince Bill Bavasi to take him back.

    desturbd1 May 19, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Aaaand that’s the ballgame. Kelly Johnson homers to make it 8-0. I think I’m gonna go ahead and call it a career for Joel Pineiro.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Maybe Bavasi will trade J.J. Putz for him.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • Eight-pitch inning for Smoltz.
Three good things about this blowout:
    1. The starter is not a usual starter for the Sox.
    2. The lineup features all four bench players.
    3. The other team’s starter is a future Hall of Famer in the midst of another great season.
I’d much rather this be the score for Game 2 than for Game 1. It’s almost understandable, considering the circumstances…

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • Need any proof that the NL is a junior-high league? Willie bleepin’ Harris is hitting .365.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Ugh. Standing watch over a disaster. Now 11-0 on the Johnson triple. All three runs this inning unearned thanks to a Lugo error — or at least they should be since Franceour reached on an error and scored, then Harris was the second (shoulda been third) out before Johnson’s hit. Gameday says all three are enarned, but that can’t be right…

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • Free Dustin! Singles in his first at-bat.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Dustin Pedroia: Now with a higher BA than Julio Lugo, Coco Crisp or Manny Ramirez.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • Raced home to this. I guess given the circumstances this is not this bad, but we were due for one of these style ass whippins.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 9:58 pm
  • Hey, I’m not alone anymore! Yeah, Rob, we were due. And like I said, considering the starter, the opposing starter and the lineup, it’s really not all too surprising.

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester just concluded his rehab start for the Pawtucket against the Ottawa Lynx.
The left-hander worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 48 pitches (29 strikes) and retired the last 10 batters he faced.”

    Paul SF May 19, 2007, 10:02 pm
  • we cannot get Lester up soon enough.

    Rob May 19, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • The alarm is currently going off in Fenway Park. Apparently there has been a report of an emergency in the building. Of course, no one in the press box has moved a muscle.
No word if that has anything to do with what’s going on on the field right now…
