East Bay Grease: Sox-A’s Gamer II

He’s got the hippest threads and the bad boogaloo
And a big ol’ bag of tricks

We’re going back to Oakland, and have finally figured out what is hip. Tonight YFSF’s resident celebrity fireballer Curt Schilling takes the mound — only time will tell if he can match Josh Beckett’s 13 wins. The Sox can extend their streak to a funkified 2 games tonight, so knock yourself out on this game thread.

  • my god was at as far as the gamecast shows it? looks like he put a rocket onto that ball and launched it

  • Trot must have been reading the papers.

  • Action in the ‘pen, Troup says. I don’t know if I like that. A’s pen shut Sox down last night.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:04 pm
  • yea but now they gotta go 6 1/3 innings :D

  • Joe and Troup talking about chorizo.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:16 pm
  • You guys didnt see it but on the single manny had during the at bat before the homer, he failed to start running because he thought it was a homer and he only made it to first on what clearly should have been a double

  • yanks just closed out the rangers

    John P July 25, 2006, 11:23 pm
  • He was properly criticized by the radio team.

  • Jays 3, M’s 0, top 5.

  • here comes another Tek K

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:27 pm
  • 7 LOBs already.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:29 pm
  • Being in Texas, I just got done watching the Rangers lose to the Yanks… And I mean it that way. The Yankees did NOT beat the Rangers. Texas gave a whole new meaning to the word “ineptitude” tonight… As did the home-plate ump, but that’s neither here nor there…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:31 pm
  • Rangers very enigmatic.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:38 pm
  • Troup says Chavez’ injury may open the door for Crede to win a gold glove. What about Lowell?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:39 pm
  • Lowell’s got to get the Glove with Chavez injured… Barring a disaster, I think Gonzo’s gotta be the favorite at short…
Speaking of MikeMike, another double from him… What second-half offensive struggles?

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:43 pm
  • Gonzo with the sac fly to make it 6-1… This is a good, solid game thus far from the Sox… Bringing in the runners who get on base… No huge innings, just consistent pressure on the pitchers…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:45 pm
  • Lowell and Gonzo are virtual locks, Tek is right there as is Loretta and Youk maybe as well. And **gulp** Manny may get one himself out there in LF

TJ Sox Fan July 25, 2006, 11:46 pm
  • 3rd sac fly tonight.
Reminds me of the Yaz era.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:48 pm
  • 70 pitches already. They’re making Schill work.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:49 pm
  • We know you like the challenge, Curt, but was it really necessary to walk the No. 9 hitter (.218 BA) on four pitches?

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:51 pm
  • lol, TJ, I agree with you on Lowell and Gonzo, but Youk and M-Lor have been steady. Not spectacular like Lowell and Gonzo. I think it’s pretty dafe that after the last few games, Manny will NOT be winning one anytime soon…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:52 pm
  • Redman wins again for KC (7-5, 5.03 ERA.) And old friend Tony Graffanino dealt to Milwaukee.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:54 pm
  • Not good… Bases loaded, 1 out…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:55 pm
  • Bear down, Schill.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • Looking at Redman’s stats the last 10 starts, I’m thinking the Sox should nab him… KC says they’ve gotten little interest, so I doubt he’d cost much…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:56 pm
  • Schilling trades the run for the out, 6-2, 2 down, men on 2nd/3rd…

    Paul SF July 25, 2006, 11:57 pm
  • Bag of balls and a keg of Harpoon IPA.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:57 pm
  • At this rate Schill will be lucky to get through 6.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 25, 2006, 11:59 pm
  • This inning has sucked… Schilling couldn’t get out of it — 6-4 on the Thomas single… Good thing we got those seemingly meaningless insurance runs the last couple innings…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:00 am
  • Hmmmm, well, can’t have everything all the time. Get this out and get the bats back up there.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:00 am
  • Swisher swishes on the splitter.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:01 am
  • A little too close.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:02 am
  • Finally strikes out Swisher, who has done very little talking, batwise, since he left Fenway…
Now, what do they always tell you about walking the leadoff hitter AND walking the No. 9 hitter? Don’t do it… Look what happens when you do… Schilling might go through 6…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:03 am
  • Thome hjit a home run tonight, so Papi needs to hit one to keep a little bit of space between him and the rest of baseball…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:04 am
  • Most of the Sox hitters, after three weeks of declining averages, are bringing themselves back to the .300 range. Even Ortiz and Gonzo are around .280, more than respectable… Manny’s looking at cracking the Top 10 in BA with a couple more hits…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:05 am
  • And now we see no patience at the plate.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:06 am
  • As soon as I say that, Loretta and Papi go down on (not very many) pitches…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:06 am
  • Christ. six effin pitches for Sarloos to get out of the inning. Way to give Schill a blow.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:08 am
  • Freakin A, was that a 4 pitch inning??

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:08 am
  • Ahh, 6… Wasn’t paying close attention. Yeah, that’s ridiculous…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:08 am
  • GameCast shows Jay Payton fouling out on a pitch that lands out of play… Good catch by someone or just silly computers?

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:11 am
  • 12 pitches. We’ll need three innings out of the bullpen. Delcarmen warming.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:14 am
  • Dunno, Paul. I’ve got the radio feed on the internet.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:15 am
  • Curt made quick work out of the A’s in the sixth, so presumably it’s on to Delcarmlinbon?

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:16 am
  • Another XBH from Lowell would be nice, drive home that insurance…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:18 am

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:22 am
  • 9 LOBs. We’ll be sweating this out.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:26 am
  • I give up, Bill… Whas the answer?

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:27 am
  • June 12, 2001: Traded by the Boston Red Sox to the Texas Rangers for Doug Mirabelli.

    TJ July 26, 2006, 12:27 am
  • I like Delcarmen in this 7th inning spot. It’s his job for now, IMO.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:28 am
  • cha-CHING!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:29 am

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:29 am

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:30 am
  • Can we PLEASE stop letting Mark Ellis on base??

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:30 am
  • And A’s pen has help Sox to 2 runs in 9 innings in this series, both in this game. This is a big inning for Manny.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:30 am
  • Heh. That’s funny… During my black period, when I was not following the Red Sox as closely…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:31 am
  • :O:O:O u had a period of not closely following the sox?? thats one of the deadly sins lol

    TJ July 26, 2006, 12:33 am
  • Ugh. Awful. 1st and 3rd, nobody out.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:33 am
  • The Duke traded him for the most ballyhooed backup catcher since Bob Montgomery.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:33 am
  • Stop it. Just stop it. I am NOT tsaying up late to watch the Sox blow another winnable game. Not on a night when the Yankees won… Not gonna do it…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:34 am
  • And another hit. 6-5. 1st and 2nd, nobody out.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:34 am
  • WTF, Manny? You’re making me miss Jermaine Van Buren.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:35 am

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:37 am
  • Frank “Double Play” Thomas.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:38 am
  • Strike out Thomas, please.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:38 am
  • Taveras warming.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:38 am
  • Got him! All right, kid…one more.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:39 am
  • Yeah! Thomas strikes out!
All right, Manny D, one more…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:39 am
  • I’d rather have had the DP.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:40 am
  • Tavarez, are you freaking kidding me? I say bring Papelbon out for two innings of you have to, bring out JVB — anything but Tavarez…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:40 am
  • Get the last one, get the last one. Some beautiful curves the last couple batters.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:41 am
  • Got him! Still have the lead!
    BAAAAATTSSSS!

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:41 am
  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:42 am
  • YESS!! Awesome! I knew there was a reason we likd this kid so much!

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:42 am
  • Runs, please. Runs. Lots of runs.

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:43 am
  • Manny showed some BALLS there.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:43 am
  • Oh…beautiful play by Chavez.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:47 am
  • When you foul off pitch after pitch, I thought it meant you were getting your timing down for something other than a grounder to third…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:48 am
  • Come on, Papi! Unload on ’em.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:48 am
  • C;mon Papi… Big fly, right here…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:49 am
  • They’re just setting trying not to leave more runners on base this inning.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:49 am
  • Single to left! Drive someone in Manny, preferably three people.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:51 am
  • Not a homer, but it’s a single, and Manny’s red hot… It’ll do, Papi. It’ll do…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:51 am
  • Come on, Manny. Swing at the 3-1. Do it.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:53 am
  • Troup says Tavares will pitch the 8th.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:54 am
  • Good pitch, though. But it was a strike…

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:54 am
  • Walked. Bases loaded, 1 out.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:54 am
  • Bases loaded. Pinch hit Wily Mo.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:55 am
  • Loaded up! C’mon Trot… Any hit will do… We’ll even take a deep flyout, or a tricky grounder…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:56 am
  • Hah. Duchscherer being a little baby about some close balls he thinks should have been strikes.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:56 am
  • Halsey in. I want a gapper.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:57 am
  • Francona will NEVER pinch hit for Trot Nixon. I can’t imagine any circumstance under which that would happen unless Nixon died on the field the half inning before his scheduled at bat… Tito is absurdly and irrationally loyal that way…
Wow, and Duchsherer just got ejected… Must not have liked the Ball 4 call?

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:57 am
  • I think the pitching change was happening anyway, but then he mouthed off leaving the mound?

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:58 am
  • 3-0 to Trot…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:58 am
  • Walk in that run, Trot. 7-5.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 12:59 am
  • WOOO!!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 12:59 am
  • HA! Walked in the insurance run! Here comes Tek to GIDP…

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 12:59 am
  • Or K.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:00 am
  • BAM! 10-5. No game is ever over till the last out, of course. But that sure as hell felt like a knockout blow.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:00 am
  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! His ears were burning.
Manny, Trot, Tek 3 RBI each.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:01 am
  • Da Cap’n

    TJ July 26, 2006, 1:01 am
  • Now Tavarez can pitch in the 8th.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:02 am
  • My man Coco, adds an RBI and another hit to my fantasy stats tonight.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:03 am
  • 16 hits for Sox tonight. Every starter w/a hit. Your turn Covelli.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:03 am
  • No mercy, say the Red Sox. 12-5, 2 out, runners 1st and 2nd.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:06 am
  • Youk avoids making 2 outs in the inning.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:07 am
  • It’s over. 12-5 will be the lead. What an inning.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:07 am
  • That woke me up.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:08 am
  • Tek before the top of the 8th:
“Team, you see Tavarez out there warming? You know what that means, don’t you? Give ’em hell, men. Give ’em hell.”

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:09 am
  • No save tonight for Paps. Julian might be able to go 2. I hope he can. We need him.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:09 am
  • Toronto 12, Seattle 3, final

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:11 am
  • Four-pitch walk. Here comes Sox Killer Ellis.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:13 am
  • Ahhh, God, the A’s announcers are still whining about the close balls to Manny earlier. “4 that could have been strikes.” This is baseball, people.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:14 am
  • Here’s the answer to our pinch-hit question on Nixon: He has 5 bases-loaded walks this season. That explains the loyalty.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:15 am
  • Big DP for Julian. … Troup, Joe say the pitches were close but the umps were right. They’re usually not homers on those.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:16 am
  • I thought they were balls, too, but I didn’t think I could state it without any prejudice. I know my fandom may have colored my judgment.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:18 am
  • Leave Tavarez in or go to Seanez for the ninth?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:19 am
  • WOOOO! Another six-run inning!!!

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:20 am
  • I say, keep it up with Tavarez. Might want Seanez for similar reasons/situations tomorrow…or there could be a 19-inning game and he could be the end of the line. A’s load the bases on a hit batsman–Trotman.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:21 am
  • Was that intentional???? … I remember Sauerbeck sucking for the Red Sox.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:21 am
  • Just you and me Devine?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:22 am
  • You know…it kind of did look intentional, but that’s purely subjective. I have no evidence it was.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:22 am
  • Looks like it, Bill. Anybody else out there.? Paul, did you have a fit and faint when Varitek actually came through?

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:24 am
  • Joe says Seanez will pitch the ninth. … If the Sox put up another crooken number, this could get ugly tomorrow afternoon. … What’s going on? The radio is about 1-2 minutes delayed.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:25 am
  • I have a partial excuse for being up so late, though I do live on the east coast. My job doesn’t start till 10, and I don’t get up till about 9:20.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:27 am
  • Ahhh, they pulled Sauerbeck because of injury, so he was allowed as much time to warm as needed.
    Tek flies out.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:27 am
  • I’m in Chicago and I’m off tomorrow.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:28 am
  • C’mon Coco! One more!

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:28 am
  • Tek can’t stand prosperity.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:29 am
  • Eh, rung up. 3 outs. Finish it fast.

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:30 am
  • Yook, Loretta, ortiz now only starters with 0 RBI.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:30 am
  • Three outs and it’s a two-game lead over Chicago in the Wild Card. … And Sox go 23 games over .500. Is that a season high? … Also, Anibel Sanchez wins again. He’s 4-0.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:32 am
  • If they can score 13 runs, I can live with the 13 LOBs.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:35 am
  • That’s a good win. A good recovery by Tavarez and a real good inning by Seanez. We need them both down the stretch.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:36 am
  • Delcarmen’s inning was my favorite. Get in a very stressful situation and then hold on!

    Devine July 26, 2006, 1:37 am
  • Yeah, you’re right. A very nice recovery by Manny.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:38 am
  • You calling it a night?

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:39 am
  • Haha, Devine, I noticed it was 12 midnight my time, which meant the Dish Netowrk programming thought the game was over… Tuned in just in time tos ee the third run score on Tek’s double…
I’d like it to be known that I intentionally threw out the GIDP line in the hopes of getting a reverse jinx going. Worked. I expect Curt to come here tomorrow and personally thank me for preserving his win ;-)
Great win, nonetheless. Delcarmen settled down and really pulled through wheen it counted, Schilling batttled through and got win No. 13. Even Tavarez and Seanez were decent. Always good to see the bats wake up, especially Tek and Coco…
    Good night all!

    Paul SF July 26, 2006, 1:40 am
  • You know, This team is amazing. Second-best record in baseball with all of the pitching problems they’ve had. Tito and the boys deserve a lot of credit thus far.

    I'm Bill McNeal July 26, 2006, 1:42 am
  • I know. This team could be the one to stop if it’s actually a complete team (maybe in, say, three weeks?).
